Can't re-import older iMovie projects

I have lots of video from pre-HD days and was able to digitize them into the older version of iMovie straight from Sony Handycam with Digital8 tape and a firewire. Now, iMovie won't see the camera, nor will it re-open the iMovie projects. Quite a few years between using this process, so just wondering if I need to find legacy software or something?

Hey robozoot,
Because you cannot see your camcorder in iMovie, try out some of the general troubleshooting in the article below. It will have you ensure that the camera is making a connection by looking in System Profiler as well as making sure that iMovie will support the camera.

  • Importing older iMovie projects into new iMovie events

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and am running iMovie 8.0.5. I like the event library. But I have a number older iMovie projects, created a few years ago -- with pain -- from analog Hi8. I would rather not have to go through the pain of reimporting from the tape. Is there any conversion from iMovie 6 (cannot remember the actual version--it was a few years ago) project to the current event library?

    Yes. File/IMPORT/From iMovie HD

  • IMovie 10 Can NOT Import Files from Older iMovie Projects

I have older iMovie projects on an external drive and want import/upgrade them to iMovie 10.
After choosing the old projects, iMovie 10 examines the old projects for a while and then gave me a list of files that it cannot import. The files I remember on the very long list are .plist and iMovie project files.
Should I be concerned?  In other words, is iMovie 10 now using a new file format that makes these files superfluous?  Will iMovie going to incorporate their information in the new architecture, or will some functionality be missing from the imported projects?
    I'm running iMovie 10.0.2 on OSX 10.9.2 on a 27" iMac.
Thank you for your time and attention.

I'm going through my old iMovie projects and importing them one-at-a-time into iMove '11 (ver 9.0.9, build 1795)
I don't know the version of the projects that I'm importing but they have this directory structure and have file creation dates in 2007:
Unfortunately, when I import them, I lose most of the editiing that from the old project:
In case you can't read the area in red, it says:
    Notes about the imported project:
All transitions wll be replaced by Cross Dissolves.
Titles and music tracks will not be imported.
Video effects will not be imported.
Isn't there a way to import older iMovie projects in their entirety and completely intact?
Thank you for your time and attention.

  • Import iOS iMovie projects into iMovie 10 on Macbook

Is it true that you can no longer import a iMovie project from a device such as an iPhone into iMovie on a Macbook using iMovie 10.0.6?

That is not true. You can use them all in one DVD. I have just created my first DVD which has a trailer, a movie with chapters and several different slide shows.
All you have to do is save each project to Media Browser. (Choose Share in toolbar). Open iDVD and choose your theme or no theme. On the right will be all your options such as audio, media photo's etc. Choose your various video's/projects etc and just drag and drop which ones you want to the page and they will automatically put themselves there with the given name of each video/project.

  • Newbie Question: Why can't I open my iMovie project in FCP?

    Hello all--
I'm sure some variation of this question has been posted a bajillion times but I can't seem to find the answer. At this point I feel like a damsel in distress. Rescue me?
I've been working with iMovie for about two years now and I've recently been learning Final Cut Pro to up the ante on my videos. However, when I tried to import an iMovie project into FCP yesterday, it didn't quite work. Let me explain what I did and what happened:
    1) I exported my (edited but previously unpublished) iMovie project by clicking Share>Export Final Cut XML
    2) I opened FCP and clicked File>Import>XML and then selected the XML, leaving all the boxes checked
    3) FCP imported the project as a sequence; however, the entire sequence reads "Media Offline" in the Canvas.
    4) I clicked File>Reconnect Media and the list of offline files is overwhelming. I tried my luck by clicking "locate" and going to my imovie folders to find the clips, but even when the browser allowed me to select a clip, when I double clicked it, nothing in the sequence changed - it's all still "offline."
I really don't know much about media management, I'll admit - I'm wondering if maybe iMovie saves edited clips in a folder other than the events or originals folder - maybe the edited clips become "temporary items"? I know I have a ridiculous amount of imovie cache and temporary items and I never touch them because there are just so many of them and I don't want to mess anything up. But could the files that FCP claims to be "offline" in fact be located in these "temporary" folders? I mean, I've looked everywhere else on my hard drive and nothing is working! Sorry, I am probably just confusing myself MORE (and you), but maybe SOMEONE will know what in the world I should do
    Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the family. I don't think many of us have ever used iMovie so your post might be more quickly answered in that forum.
My suggestion is to forget trying to move the project. Rebuild it in FCP. The exercise will teach you much more about your new software than fighting XML.
If you don't feel like doing that, try a smaller iMovie project, something with only two or three clips and one dissolve.
The larger issue is probably how iMovie stores its captured media which is completely different from how FCP does it. And the format is different. FCP does not, IIRC, view iMovie's default dvstream codec. You will want to export your movie clips as DV.

  • I want to import one imovie project into another one.  In other words, I have created a short sequence in iMovie 11 on one computer, and I want to import it into a project that I am working on, on another computer.

I want to import one imovie project into another one.  In other words, I have created a short sequence in iMovie 11 on one computer, and I want to import it into a project that I am working on, on another computer.  I copied the project files onto a hard drive, and then connected that drive to the Mac that my main project is on, but when I select "import" the files are faint gray -meaning I can't select them.  Help!  I want to transfer a sequence of shots from one iMovie 11 project on one computer, into another iMovie 11 project on another computer.

    Tell me it ain't so!
I wish I could.  The research you've done is correct.
Wether you copy and paste or rebuild the Project from the other computer, you're going to need to get your Evnets copied from the other computer.
The Prjoject files only contain pointer back to the original media.

  • Importing previous imovie projects (versions 5 and below)

iMovie 08 is not able to open an older imovie project file. I've tried to use the "import" feature, but it doesn't recognize the project file from iMovie4 or 5, even though it is in the same folder with all the media files, transitions, audio cache, etc..

    Hi there
I bought a new Mac yesterday and the same thing is bhappening to me
Worried as anything - did you find a solution?

  • IMovie 10.0.5: How to import an iMovie project from an iOS device

This description (iMovie '11: Import an iMovie project from an iOS device) seems no longer accurate because:
    a) the command "Send project to iTunes" is NOT available in iMovie for iOS 2.0 (791)
    b) editing an imported project in the iMovie theater in iMovie 10.0.5 seems NOT possible (at least I don't know how).
So how would I import an iMovie project from an iOS device (version 2.0 791) to iMovie on Mac (10.0.5)?
    Thanks in advance!

I too are having difficulty trying to import a project from iMovie iOS (iPhone) to iMovie 10.0.5 on my mac mini.
I found how to export the file to iTunes. you simply share it and the send to iTunes option is in there. But when i try to open the files after i have transferred to my documents folder, they do not open or import. The file has a  .iMoiveMobile file extension, which does not seem to be correct.
    Can anyone help further ?

  • Why can't I import old imovies into idvd?

Why can't I import old imovies into idvd?

I have 68 GB free and the movie is a small one. The iDVD file is on my hard drive and in the dock.
Today I found a work around for this problem.  While I cannot open the original movie, I can access the clips in the media folder.  I put the clips together and made a new movie.   And I can import this to iDVD by going to "share" in the menu and selecting iDVD.

  • IDVD won't import any iMovie project

    Hi,
For the last 2 days I've been trying to import ANY type of video file from iMovie into iDVD 7.0.3 but again and again, I get the error: "Unsupported File Type : Unknown format"
    I tried:
    - Using iMovie to Share my project with iDVD but after coding etc, iDVD gives the error: "Not a movie"
    - Using the Share -> "Media browser..." but every time iDVD gives the above error.
    - Reinstalling iMovie and iDVD with Appcleaner.
The thing is that I can still import mp4 movies but not if I make them with iMovie. And when I for ex. try to drag a iMovie project that I Shared via iMovie, I don't get a green plus when put it in the menu of the DVD...
I really need to burn this DVD,
    Please help me!

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named:
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort: from Craig: Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.

  • CS4 problem when importing older CS3 Project, mismatched edits

I am trying to import a CS3 project into CS4 and for some reason some of the edits don't match up. It's only in some parts, most of it is fine. I really want to be able to use the new Media Encoder so I can make a DVD from the CS3 project (I was unable to do this in CS3 + older Media Encoder because it would always crash on my long length project).
I also tried bypassing Premiere CS4 by using the Media Encoder CS4 standalone project import option and selected the CS3 project and then the sequences....I scrubbed through the player and the same edits are mismatched/incorrect.
If I go back to the project in the older CS3, all edits are fine...but of course I can't export a MPEG for DVD because CS3's exports crash.
    What is the deal?
If it matters, I am using 720p P2 footage.

Well I'm interested in this thread because I'm having a similar problem importing CS2 projects - audio filters are screwy, especially EQ.
I can't finish this project in CS2 for several reasons.
I can't seem to convert every project CS2 project -- some work, some do not. Missing preview files, probably. I know that CS4 conversions hanging are a separate documented issue.
So I'm trying to import projects instead. Everything looks all right but everything does not SOUND all right.

  • Can Final Cut Pro Open iMovie projects?

I am just curious because I have a lot of clips into a project of imovie that I wanted to use in final cut pro but I could just copy all the clips but I wanted to check in advance to see if that was possible.

You used to be able to just open iMovie 06 projects in Final Cut but Apple made it a bit more complex.
In iMovie 08, select the SHARE menu and then click on "Export Final Cut Pro XML"
    Save the XMl someplace fun.
Then exit iMovie if you're finished.
Back in FCP, right-click in the Browser window and select IMPORT and then click on XML.
Navigate to find the XML you just exported from iMovie, click on it, and open it.
A new sequence is created and you simply need to load that sequence (By double-clicking).
    Everything is wonderful.
Warning, do NOT use the File | Open menu sequence which can locate and open the XML because this will cause the new COLOR program to load the iMovie Project and that wasn't so much fun.

  • Imovie9 wont import my imovie project file

    I made a project on my ipad, but need to edit it no my computer. I have iOS 10.9 (maverick) and am using iMovie 10.0.3  on both machines. I following the instructions of;
    - Going to project in ipad, htting export to Itunes.
-Connecting devices, finding the project in iTumes on my copmuter, uder Apps, then saving it.
    - Opening iMovie on my computer, hitting import.
But then the project file is greyed out.
    What can I do?

    Hi There,
Reading your reply got me very excited, especially because it worked for Joe94r. But then...I tried it myself, to no avail. I did exactly as you had suggested. I copied and pasted the project to the iMovie Projects folder, and the Event it was linked with to iMovie events. I opened up iMovie and, while it recognized the Event, the project itself was nowhere to be seen.
    Any ideas?

  • Can i move an unfinished imovie project from one mac to another

so i started a project in imovie on my parents mac and now i want to finish it off on my macbook. is there anyway I can transfer the project????

Yup. however, seeing as how it isn't finalized, well this ought to work.
1-connect up your macbook to your parents' mac (file sharing?)
2-open up iMovie (on your parents' mac)
3-click on "project library" in the upper right hand corner of your iMovie window. You should see your other hard drive there, also. drag your project to this drive. If a message comes up about "project" or "project and events", choose project and events
4-launch iMovie (on your macbook) click on Project Library. and the one your transferred should be there. drag it to the iMovie projects list and it should work
oh, one last thing. Both your parents' mac and your macbook should have the same version of iMovie for this to work, so I've been told
