Can't Re-install System Software

I need to re-install System OSX Tiger on a G4 Powerbook which has lost most of its desktop and user info -- including the Hard Drive icon, and it won't show the icon for the installer disk when I insert it. Obviously, I can't do the install like this -- and need help getting to it.
This is serious for me -- any help greatly appreciated

Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

Normally Microsft allows the installation of their programs, except Operating Systems, to be installed on a desktop and notebook at the same time as long as both system are used exclusively by the same person and Not at the same time.
So this should also be true for MS Office for Mac. The only way to tell is to install it on the Mini and then use the same key to activate it. If the activation goes through you are fine. But if you run both system at the same time do not open any of the Office programs on both system at the same time. That may trigger MS to disallow one of the activations.
MS Office for both Mac and Windows checks the local network and logs into the MS activation site everytime one of the apps is started to check current activation and to check if you have it running on more then one computer on your local network using the same key.

  • Can't re-install iPod software

I recently made a clean installation of my system software (10.4.2) and as a result I need to re-install my iPod software. I have a 3G 20GB iPod, and when I try to install the software from the CD I get a message saying I need to install OS X Networking Update. The only reference I can find to this is Networking Update 1.0, which appears to be for a much earlier version of OS X. Should I install this update and if not, how do I re-install my iPod software?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Chuck
Installing the latest update from the link that you provided was the first thing I tried, but unfortunately for some reason it wouldn't install on my Mac. The Easy Install option told me that the update couldn't be installed as there was nothing selected; Custom Install wouldn't allow me to check either of the boxes (they were both greyed-out and unchecked) and, thus, it couldn't be installed that way either. This was why I had the idea of going back to my original installer CD and taking it from there.
Thanks for your suggestion anyway – I'll keep trying.

  • CD drive doesn't work & I need to re-install system software

I have an early 1st gen. MacBook Pro that has a bad CD drive. It doesn't work at all and I don't have an external CD drive. I need to re-install the system software for this MacBook Pro and I'm wondering if there is a way I can do it using my newer (late 2009) MacBook Pro. In this newer computer the CD drive works OK.
    Any ideas?
(Sorry if this question has already been addressed. I did a search and couldn't find anything, but maybe I was using the wrong words.)

  • Re-installing system software

    Please can some one help!!
I'm re-installing all my system software but i'd like to keep all my internet and Email setting with all emails in my inbox. I have done this before but have forgotton. Please can someone refresh my memory.
I'm reinstalling as no matter what I do I always get this message when trying to print "cannot open Printer" so the easy way is to re-install everything.
    G4 powermac   Mac OS X (10.1.x)

Do you use pop to get your mail? If you are on imap, all mail should be stored on the server. You can back mail and attachments in ~/Library. Preferences are in ~/Library/Preferences. Depends on your browser as to backing up your bookmarks - which one are you using? Is there and option to export them?
If you are doing a complete reinstall I would advise you to image your mac first. http://www.bombich.com/software/netrestore.html is a very good imaging tool. You can create an image of your whole mac. Save it elsewhere and at least you know you won't have lost anything.

  • Error 8062 when I try to copy or move files on my macbook: "This operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8062)". Can even not install new software now!!

Since a few days when I try to copy or move files on my macbook, I often get an error message saying "This operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (error code -8062)". And then it just quits the copy or move.
I searched a lot on the internet, but only found solutions for cases you cannot empty the trash due to this issue.
I tried those solutions for my trash and that helped after some trying.
However, I still have the problem with copying and moving files.
I even cannot install new software now, as it has to copy itself to the programs-directory, and gives the same error-message.
    Who can help me??
Cannot seem to find any info on it on the support-forums or elsewhere.
    My user-account is administrator, I use a 13" Macbook Aluminium (Late 2008). Mac OS X 10.6.8 CPU 2Ghz Intel Core Duo, RAM: 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Tips I received so far (thanks to A-Mac via Twitter http://www.a-mac.nl and Remco Kalf http://www.remcokalf.nl/)
    - make sure you have at least 10% of your harddisk in free space (I had only 5%).
    - do a PRAM-reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379)
    - perform a hardware test (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509)
    - make a complete backup (with for example Carbone Clone Copier, see http://www.bombich.com/)
    - after complete backup: use diskwarrior (boot from Diskwarrior DVD, first perform diagnostics, then perform "Rebuild" which rebuilds your file directory).
So far I only cleared up some space on my HD, and already the problem occurs less.
Still, I will go through the other tips too.
    (will post progress)

  • Why can´t I install system on ext. disk??

Why can´t I install my system on an external firewiredisk to have an alternative boot disk? My dealer said I can do. Now I tried to install Tiger from original DVD to an external firewire 400 disk from lacie, that was originally formatted to mac extended in two partitions. Before installation now, I formatted one partition to mac ext. journaled. Installer didn´t accept that. Why?

I'm not sure that's correct. "Not sure" because of the 10.2 issue, but I can say definitively that you can boot a both a G4 PB running 10.3 and an Intel MBP running 10.4 from the different partitions on the same external drive.
The two issues are partition scheme and the formatting of each partition. For my example, both partitions can have the same format, but that shouldn't matter for this since partitioning is "above" formatting in the drive architecture.
PPC machines must have an Apple Partition Map (APM) partition scheme on the boot drive to boot (they can't boot from a GUID drive). The Intel Mac OS installer requires a GUID-partitioned drive to install onto, but Intel Macs don't require GUID drives to boot. In other words, the Intel flavor of the Mac OS can't be installed directly onto an APM-partitioned drive with the install discs, but the OS can be cloned to the APM-partitioned drive. I have a LaCie external, APM-partitioned, and I use SuperDuper to backup my MBP and my wife's G4 PB running Panther. The external drive successfully boots my MBP and her PB.

  • Re-installing System Software, Then upgrading OS

I just replaced my Macbook Pro Hard Drive. I was about to begin the long process of installing the original system 10.4.6 (from when I purchased the Macbook Pro), then upgrading to 10.5 (which I purchased recently), then upgrading to 10.5.6 (downloaded online). My question is this, is there a benefit to starting from the original system install and then upgrading, or can I go right to 10.5? In the past, I think it was recommended to always start with the original system on other PowerPC and Powerbooks I have owned, maybe because of certain drivers or whatever. But I think I should be ok starting my installation with the 10.5. I just want to be sure I'm not missing anything by not using the original system CD (10.4.6) from when I purchased the Macbook Pro. Thank you in advance for the guidance.

The only things you won't have are the bundled software that came w/ your OEM Tiger. But you can use Pacifist (shareware) to install any extra programs you want that were on your OEM disk.

  • Why can't I install system updates?

    Hi all,
I realized today that my system updates haven't actually been 'installing' for awhile. Whoops. Basically, I have a slew up updates that need to be installed, and I get a message that I need to restart my computer for this install to happen. I restart and nothing happens, no updates are installed and I still have the same list of stuff that needs to be done. Here are my specs:
    Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac11,3
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i3
      Processor Speed:          3.2 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
L2 Cache (per core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          4 MB
      Memory:          8 GB
      Processor Interconnect Speed:          5.86 GT/s
      Boot ROM Version:          IM112.0057.B00
      SMC Version (system):          1.59f2
    Version: 10.6.8
    Help?

Please open Finder - Go - Go to... and copy and paste:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
into the box, and once the file is located drag it to the desktop. Then log out of your user account and log back in and retry Software Update. Post back what the results are please.

    Hi Mark,
sorry to hear of such bad luck.
Check with Disk Utility (Top Menu - Utilities) while booted from the OSX DVD if your HD is set to the GUID partition table.
If not change it to that for OSX installation.
    Good Luck

  • Can't re-install system without losing everything on the HD

I am trying to save 3 Final Cut Projects on my Dual 1.8 ghz G5. Here's what happened. The unit has been working fine until yesterday when I turned it on and got an Apple screen with a turning gear and nothing else. I have another system on my second internal drive so I booted from there. Here's what I tried :
disk utility said disk OK but would not repair permissions gave a exit error.
disk warrior rebuilt it same problem with disk utility and Apple Screen
I reloaded the system OS X 10.5 big mistake, It created a previous folder but failed to install. Now if I run install it wants to erase the disk, there is no archive option. I can see the data on the damaged main drive but do not know how to copy it to a clean install. Or put a new system on the damaged disk.
My rescue plan is to clone the damaged main drive and then using the clone, try to move the applications and data from the clone to the clean drive. Will this work? What system folders need to be moved too?
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Naturally the back up I have with time machine is so old it does not have the 3 projects I need to save.

From the OS on the second HD, copy the FCP projects to it. If it's a complete clone of the borked one, then after doing that, erase the borked one, and restore the good one to it.

  • Can my iMac with system software 10.4.11 use Linksys6 to connect wirelessly to our wifi?

Is the only way an iMac with OS 10.4.11 can connect to a wireless network through an airport?

Yes you can.  If your imac has a wifi card. You open an internet connection and type in theip address of the router. Then following the instruction book for the router, set it up, then go to your imac and open network in system utilities , click on airport turn it on and you should get a link showing your router.  You might be asked for a pasword . Which will be whatever password you set up for the router. If problems click on the ? and the help menu  weill tell you what to do.

  • Installing system software on a new hard drive

I have a Mac book pro 2011.My install disk is snow leopard 10.6.4. ive tried numberous times from disk recovery and backups on an airport time capsule. nothing seems to work. it start loading and then either stops or asked me to restart and the cycle starts all over again. What im i not doing?

If you have an Early 2011 model that originally came with Snow Leopard the disc you need is grey and says something like OS X system reinstall disc. It should be version 10.6.7, not 10.6.4. If the Snow Leopard disc you are trying to boot from is white that is a Retail SL upgrade disc and will not work on your model Mac.

  • With Lion, How Can I Erase the Hard Drive and Reinstall The System Software?

I plan on buying a used iMac with a Core 2 Duo so that I can run Lion.  Since Lion can only be purchased at the Mac App store what if I needed to erase my hard drive and re-install the system software.  How can I do this without a DVD with the OS on it like I have for Snow Leapard.  I suppose that I could boot from my Snow Leapard DVD and do the erase.  Then, I supposed I would be able to download Lion again from the Mac App Store without paying for it again.  But, how would you erase a hard drive and reinstall the system software when purchasing a new Mac with Lion already installed and no DVD at all with the OS on it?
    -- Kaydell

When someone purchases any Apple computer with a DVD Drive, they should have recieved two DVDs... One contains the Operating System (up to Snow Leopard, Lion no longer ships on DVD) and the other contains the SYSTEM SOFTWARE (i.e. iLife and iWork). To install the software, they just insert the DVD with the SYSTEM SOFTWARE into any compatible Mac and run the installer. There is no need to erase the hard drive to install SYSTEM SOFTWARE. Maybe a friend can let you borrow the SYSTEM SOFTWARE DVD. The other option is to purchase the software via the App Store.
FYI... App Store purchases are linked to the PURCHASER'S APPLE ID. So if you buy a used Mac from a friend and that Mac already has Lion installed on it,that Lion purchase is linked to YOUR FRIEND'S APPLE ID, not yours. So if you want to download Lion again, you will have to enter your FRIEND'S APPLE ID AND PASSWORD. You can always have your friend re-download Lion and make you a DVD copy.
