Can't re-install version 5.0.4

Hi there ... I recently (after having backed everything up) reformatted my hard drive and re-installed OSX 10.3.9 as my system was slowing down. The version of iphoto that was re-installed is 4.0.3. Even after performing the 'check for updates' and 'software update' tasks, it remains version 4.0.3. I went to the apple web page to download the 5.0.3 updater, but when I run it I get the message 'unable to run iphoto 5.0.4 updater I receive an error message saying iphoto 5.0.4 cannot be installed on this computer. An eligible iphoto application could not be found in /Applications.
I cannot open my backed up iphoto library with version 4.0.3 so this is all very frustrating. Any suggestions??! Thanks in advance!

That is correct. Prior to performing an 'erase and install' I backed up my files and applications to an external hard drive. I actually "double backed-up" by using Backup as well as dragging and dropping important folders. I used my original install disks (which contains iphoto 4.0.3) to re-install my OS. There is a folder on my external hard drive called "iPhoto Library" that contains my original pictures.
After re-installing OSX I performed all available Software Updates. Now, prior to re-installing I do not know what version of iPhoto was installed, but I never obtained a 'bootlegged' copy. Any version I had was simply a result of performing frequent 'Software Updates' and 'Check for updates..." from within iPhoto. If I just copy the 'iPhoto Library' folder from the external hard drive into my 'Photos' folder and then attempt to open iPhoto, it says that the library has been created with a newer version of iphoto and to open it with a newer version. I tried downloading and installing the 5.0.3 update from the apple web site but I cannot perform the install and it says a valid version of iphoto doesn't exist in the Applications directory.
I understand that I could import each folder, but my library is quite large and this would be extremely tedious. Not to mention that I would lose all my albums, books, etc. What I don't understand is why the performing a 'Software Update' doesn't get me back to the same version of iphoto I had before the re-install. I am using the same installation CDs. How did I get a verion greater than iphoto 4 on my system in the first place?!

Can you open up Task Manager by pressing ctrl + alt + del and selecting Task Manager. Then on the processes tab make sure they are no firefox.exe processes going on. If there is, end it.

Yes, definitely.
Installing older, unnecessary versions simply to install the version 5 upgrade would be a waste of everybody's time and your hard drive space.
Just download and install Lightroom 5.6

Neither myself (running on PC windows vista 32 bit) or my friend (on a mac) are able to install versions of iTunes around 10.5 or higher successfully. This leads me to believe the problem isn't necessarily with our computers and there may be something wrong elsewhere. I'm not a computer wiz but I have tried most of the advice on these forums e.g. Uninstalling and reinstalling, deleting temporary files, expanding files and trying individual downloads and more. I can install older versions of iTunes where they use to combine it with QuickTime with no problems however this is no good to me or my friend because only versions 10.5 and up come with support with iPhone 4S and that's what we need. I managed after several attempts to install iTunes 10.52 but without the apple mobile device so therefor the iTunes wouldn't connect to my phone or recognise it, apple sync notifier also has problems and fails to start.
Please can someone help me with this, I have tried everything on the apple troubleshooting pages so please don't link me those. Or please can iTunes and apple do something in an update that corrects this problem because I know many people are having similar issues. I only bought this phone for the music and at the moment I feel cheated because I wouldn't have these problems with any other phone because I'd just be able to drag and drop.

I had the same experience. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, with Windows 7 Home Edition, 32 bit.
I tried to install iTunes 10.5 and it started installing, then, just before the end of the process, came up with the following error message:
"There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
Of course, no information on what the program that couldn't be run was! At first I tried the usual stuff, like scanning for viruses etc. but nothing doing. Then I started Googling. In the end, I uninstalled all Apple stuff from my computer. A lot of it I had to do manually, going in to the program files drive and deleting stuff from there, but some of it wouldn't delete as it was saying it was open in Windows Explorer. In the end, I managed to delete the iTunes folders by selecting one of my mp3 tracks saved on the computer and right clicking 'open with'. I then browsed my pc to locate the iTunes folders still outstanding and was able to right click and delete them that way.
Then emptied the recycle bin and did a restart before going online and downloading iTunes 10.5.
Thankfully it worked, but its taken me a good few hours and made me really quite tetchy! I've never had this problem before, so I hope this is going to be a one off.
One thing that doesn't seem to be working is that, despite how many times I tell it that my preference is for the iTunes Media folder to be located on my external hard drive, it keeps putting it back to the C drive! Didn't have that issue with the last version. Grrrrrr. Arrrrgggh.

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

I was attempting to confirm that a Jar file I

Using your tips, I was able to find the 1.5
JRE's listed in the Java control panel
(of an XP Pro box) and see they had no
checkmark for 'enabled'.
After enabling 1.5.0_08, I was successfully
able to launch the application (OK - applet
really) using the 1.5.0_08 JRE.

local testing, but sometimes it is handy
to ask others to help test via the web,

For such situation, I'd suggest the following:
1. Remove current installed office with the fix-it tool in
KB2739501, and follow the "Remove Office manually" section to make sure there are no remaining files
2. Either download a trial version of Office 2013 from
http://office.microsoft.com/, or from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/jj937170
3. Reboot your computer in clean boot mode, and run setup again

I bought a used white flat screen imac (PPC with OS10.5.8. I had to replace the harddrive from storm damage. How can I find/download a full install version of 10.5 to format and load the new hard-drive? Currently comes on with ? screen.

Call the Apple Store and ask them to sell you a copy, you can then use the combo updater or you can buy a copy on eBay, but make sure it's the black retail copy and not a grey machine specific disc.

Need to reinstall Photoshop CS2 but it can't find a previously installed version so won't reinstall

Photoshop CS2 told me there was a "major problem" and that I would need to reinstall the software to continue using it.
So I used the installer CD, but it told me it could not install because there was already a copy installed, which would need to be removed.
So I removed the old version and tried to reinstall but now it tells me it needs a previously installed version in order to reinstall.
Adobe "customer service"chat is 100% useless on this, referred me to the 800 #, been on hold for over 45 miinutes now, and no relevant topics found on "help" forums.
For a multibillion dollar monopoly, you'd think they could hire a couple of customer service reps but I guess it's all DIY "support" here, so can anyone help?

So, you are NOT trying to reinstall an upgrade, but a purchased version (not in an upgrade path from one version to the next)?
If that is correct, there should be no request for a "previously installed version." That only appears when one is installing an upgrade.
Are you installing from physical media (a DVD), or from a download?
