Can't re-order songs in playlist

In most of the playlists I have created I can move the songs into whatever order I desire, but one of my playlists won't let me. I can sort by heading, but cannot manually move a song from ... say 1st place to 3rd place.
I'm sure I'm doing something stupid, but I can't figure out what it is.

First, make sure the shuffle button (bottom left corner) is off. You can not sort when the playlist has shuffle turned on.
Second, you have to click on, and sort by, the very first heading, which is the one above the track numbers and has no text. Then you can move stuff around. If you are sorting by artist, album, etc. you can not reorder tunes manually.

Sad to see that people have been complaining about this since last year (although not many seem to care, which is odd). For classical music listeners it is a total slap in the face.

I have transferred my itunes library to an external drive. I then attached the external disk to a new computer. I can now access all songs from the new computer. But I can't access playlists. I can still access all songs and playlists on the old computer

If you right mouse and select Get info it will show you the Apple ID used to purchase these songs.
Usually the name of an apple id is based on the email. So knowing that you may have forgotten the Apple ID password.

I have about 50 playlists that I created as playlists and have always been able to add songs to as I purchased them. The lists were originally created as regular playlists. Then, one day I opened up iTunes and all the existing playlists I had created as playlists, and has always added songs to, had the "gear" symbols and acted like genius playlists. How can I change them back and why did this happen...any ideas?

ANSWER:
1. I had to post my question a second time because as you can see my first post isn't showing as a question anymore nor does it allow me to recheck the "box" that turns my post into a question.
2. I received suggested answers via a "popup". The answers were dated 2006 and 2008.
3. While some questions may be able to have answers from that long ago, my question requires a 2011 answer.
I knew how to drag songs to my playlist in 2008!
4. The saddest part is while Apple is sending me expired answers from 2006 and 2008, Ask.com already has a thread on this subject.

How do I select multiple songs and move them to a playlist?
1. I was shocked when I went into Itunes and I could not drag any of my songs from one playlist to another. I clicked and tapped and held down the cntrl/shift key. Until yesterday, I would have told you I was extrememly confident in my Itunes skills. It is one thing to not realize that this would be a problem but then to have NOTHING in the "help box" that addressed this common issue.
2. I teach "Writing in the Workplace" so I know that I exhausted the Itunes "help" box as well as anyone could.
3. I manually manage my music and I am going to continue to manually magage my playlists due to organizational needs.
4. AND I need to move songs to playlists WITHOUT activitating Ping.
5.. I feel like Apple is bullying me into using PING. I say this because the Itunes help section DOES have instructions on how organize my playlist IN PING.

I have songs in my "music" playlist and all I need to do is move them to my "marathon" playlist.
Obviously, there has been an upgrade that changed the basic operation something that has my songs locked in place. However, nothing appears in the "help" that remotely answers my question.
I am just really sad it has taken me so long for something so simple and that I had to post here for something that should have been in "help" before the change was allowed to even happen.
Soooo....too make a short question even longer I had to run my 1/2 marathon without music this morning and I am not closer to getting those pesky music files to move from one playlist to another.

Can't drag new song into playlist

I just purchased a song and attempted to drag it from the "Recently Purchased" column to my "Christmas" playlist. I get a warning that says only iCloud songs can be put in iCloud playlists and the song will only be available on the computer if I proceed...but this IS an iCloud song. The button I am apparently supposed to select says "Remove Playlist." I'm pretty sure I don't want to do that.
I keep reading negative comments on forums about the iCloud and I have to say, it's been nothing but trouble for me so far. Can I simply remove it (without disrupting my library) and just take the $25 loss? It's not worth the hassle.

You don't have to put song into a playlist to put them onto the iPod. Playlists are an easy way to arrange music and select certain tracks.
Open iTunes prefs -> iPod. Set it to Auto update ALL songs and playlists.
Any new songs and playlists will go onto the iPod when you plug it in.

I can't sync selected songs and playlists with itunes

On my laptop - I am unable to tick the "selected songs and playlists" to sync a cd i've imported. It only gives the option of replacing entire music library?

Is entire music library selected now in additon to Sync Music being selected under the Music tab for your iPhone sync preferences?
If you have manually manage music and videos currently selected under the Summary tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes and you want to switch to syncing, you must select Sync Music under the Music tab first followed by selecting "selected songs and playlists" and your selections below.This will erase all music currently on your iPhone first. In regards to manually managing music and syncing music, you can do one or the other, not both at the same time.

Can't Drag & Drop Songs into Playlists

I am astounded that this appears to be such a wide spread issue and there do not seem to be any useful responses to the issue. I have always been able to drag music from my iTunes library into playlists I have already created. Now the playlists I previously created (they were not created as genius playlists) all have a funny "gear wheel" shaped symbol next to them and will not accept anything dragged from the library. If I create a new playlist (which now shows a "purchased music" symbol) and give it the name of one of the already created playlists, I can drag library music into it, but I don't want to have to recreate every playlist and manually re-drag every song into the playlists. Help! Why can't I drag songs to playlists??

I don't know if it's related to iTunes 10, or it's something I somehow accidentally did, but whenever I try to drag a song to a playlist, nothing happens; the highlighted song just floats back to the middle of my screen. The little green plus sign I am used to seeing does not appear. What happened? How do I fix this?

I am having the same problem. I created a new playlist but when I left click on the song and choose "add to playlist" it doesn't have the new playlist name that I just created as an option. It will not let me drag and drop into the playlist either. I'll keep checking back to see if anyone else has a solution to this.

Can't transfer imported songs to playlist album

Hi I just imported songs from a cd into iTunes, I created an playlist album to put the songs in but when I select the imported songs and drag them to the playlist album nothing is transfered.

What kind of playlist is it? Is it a smart playlist or an ordinary one?
If it's an odinary one what I would do is find the album in ITUNES, highlight all the songs and right click so it brings up the menu of options. Scroll down and there should be an option that says "add to playlist".
If its a smart playlist, go to the playlist right click and edit play list. choose album is and then type in the album name.

Can't delete a song or playlist

everytime i try and delete this one song, it goes away. when i then reconnect the mini, there the song is again. It also creates some kind of playlist which i did not create and that too will not go away.
I do have a error message about "...temp file 3 is corrupt & unreadable. Pls run chkdsk utility"
I also just purchased Madonna's new single and that won't drag into my mini although it seems to when i do the drag and drop thing.

Is the playlist in your iTunes library, or is it already on the shuffle (as a playlist)?
If you created one or more playlists for your shuffle in your iTunes library (with the songs in the desired playlist order), you should set up automatic syncing. Here's how to do that, if you have not already...
NOTE: If the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
Select the shuffle in the sidebar, under DEVICES. Near the top of the window, there is a bar of buttons, starting with Summary. Click Music next to Summary. This is the shuffle's Music screen, where you tell iTunes how to sync songs. (Sorry if you know this already...)
Check the box for Sync Music. Below that, choose the option to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres. In your case, find and checkmark those playlists you want under Playlists. When you click Apply, the songs on those playlists and the playlists sync to the shuffle.
When using your shuffle, the default playlist that you are using is the All Songs list. To play songs in order, the shuffle's power switch needs to be set to the play-in-order (middle) position. However, if you are playing from the All Songs list, the songs play in alphabetical order.
To play from a particular playlist that is on the shuffle, you need to use VoiceOver to switch to that playlist. This document explains how to set up and use VoiceOver on a shuffle

When playing from a particular playlist, with the power switch set to play-in-order, the songs play in playlist order.

My playlists only appear in itunes when my ipod is connected, and it will not allow me to drag songs into playlists from the music library, can anyone help. Have downloaded newest version of itunes and using windows xp.

Is it possible that you are not seeing the thirteenth song because you did not scroll all the way down within the playlist?

I would like to reorder my songs in playlists to reflect the order on the original taping but it resists all attempts, despite my following the instructions in "help". My previous copy of itunes had no problems, I could drag to the order I needed....???

Thanks, but no go. I can't get that "bar" to appear that shows where the song is going to land when you let go of the clicker no matter what I do. It's some stupid setting, maybe I should resort to setting everything back to default settings... can I do that?
