Can't reach network video server on Mac Mini's USB Ethernet Adapter.

I am trying to connect an IP video server to my Mac Mini's USB>Ethernet adapter. The server works fine on the built in Ethernet "en(0)", but is unreachable on the USB>Ethernet adapter network"en(3)".
Is this a subnet issue? I don't know much about networking obviously, but I think I just need to find a way to designate the proper port to look on, because the Mac is looking on the built in Ethernet only when I specify http://192.168.0.90:80/
The en(3) is configured for DCHP.
I could just hook the server up to the built in Ethernet, but then I'll have to run new and very long cat 5 cable.
I'd love to hear any ideas on how to get this working.

The Network Settings for the USB>Ethernet port are:
IPv4: Using DHCP
IP Address 169.254.33.152
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Router: (none)
DNS Server: (none)
Search Domains: (none)

  • Networking Lion Server on Mac Mini with XP

On my XP desktop I can ping to my Mac Mini with Lion Server. I can ping the IP Address of the Mac Mini from the command line. When I try to map a network drive when I enter the ip address\username(on the Mac Mini) another screen appears asking for username and password. I can't get past that screen. When I enter in the username and password of my Admin account on the Mac Mini it wipes out the information and l am left with a blank username and password dialog box.
What can I do so the XP box can see files on the Mac Mini? The Mac Mini does not need to see information on the XP box.
    Thank you for looking.

Lion Server Forum might have some answers for you?

  • I can no longer play videos on my Mac mini.

I got a new magic mouse for Christmas. I connected it to my Mac mini Lion. It works great but I can no
longer play videos like from YouTube. I just see a black screen. Even the start triangle does not show up.
This is date coincident with installing the new mouse.
Does anybody have a clue what is going on here?
    Thanks in advance.

The Magic Mouse and YouTube videos don't have anything to do with each other. I switch between my Magic Mouse and my track pad all day, and it has no effect on YouTube.
YouTube playback is browser and Flash Player related.
Check your Safari Security preferences to be sure that Plugins are allowed.
Worst case, do a "clean Install" of Flash Player. Instructions (with illustrations) are here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1343084

If your computer is tied to a network, then there is a way to check. Go to System Preferences, and click Accounts. unlock Admin
then you can click Login Options.
under that, Network Account Server. This should show you what server your computer is tied to. If you aren't in the tech department, you could try asking them.

  • How can I share external devices connected to my Mac mini via USB on a wired network.

Own a Mac mini with Mountain Lion.  Purchased the server app.  The Mac mini is connected to a wired network with Mac’s and Windows machines.  I have an external hard drive and 2 printers connected to the MAC mini via USB.  I would like to share these devices with other computers on the wired network. Although I have attached similar devices with an airport extreme in the past, I am unable to use a wireless router in this case.  Any suggestions on making this work with my current setup?

You don't really even need server app to do this. Simply go to System Preferences | Sharing and turn on both File & Printer sharing. Then, for example, the printer (not relevant what connection it has but obviously USB is fine) will be available to everyone on the wired network.
That's all there is to it - unless I missed/misunderstood something re: your setup which seems very straightforward.

  • Can i connect my iMac to a mac mini (wirelessly) and control the mac mini display on my TV?

Can i connect my iMac to a mac mini (wirelessly) and control the mac mini display on my TV?

Look up "screen sharing" in help
You can control your mini (which I am assuming you are hooking to your TV) complete from your iMac.
After you set up screen sharing, you can go to the finder, under the "go" menu choose "Connect to server" and then browse.  Choose your mac mini's name, and look for the "Screen Sharing" button.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Sharing.
    Select the Screen Sharing checkbox.
To specify who can share your screen, select one of the following:
    All users:
Select this if you want to allow any user with a user account on your computer to share your screen.
    Only these users:
Select this if you want to restrict screen sharing to specific users.Click Add at the bottom of the Users list and select a user from Users & Groups (accounts you have set up in Users & Groups preferences), Network Users (users on your network), or your Address Book. Or click New Person and enter a name and password to create a sharing account. Then select that user from the list, and then click Select.
Click Computer Settings and set the following options:
Anyone may request permission to control screen:
Select this to allow anyone on your network to request to share your screen.
VNC viewers may control screen with password:
Select this and enter a password that VNC viewer applications can enter in order to control your screen. It’s recommended that you not set a password if you only share this computer’s screen using the built-in screen sharing viewer in Mac OS X.

  • How to install OS X Server on Mac Mini w/o external display?

    I have:
Brand new mac mini (Mountain lion still in start-up mode)
    OId mac mini
    Macbook pro
    Network & firewire cable
    Time Capsule
    Remote desktop
    I don't have
    An external display
I want to setup the new mac mini as a server, and migrate my data from a time capsule back up of an older mac mini.
How can I do this without an external display? I read that you can just plug the new Mac Mini into the network and remote desktop will see it in set-up mode, but this doesn't work.
    Thanks!

If you have no external keyboard (even a Windows USB one would do) then you have no way to boot the new Mac mini in Target Disk Mode.
If you have a keyboard and can boot the Mac mini in Target Disk Mode then you can do the following -
Boot the new Mac mini in Target Disk Mode by holding down the T key
Connect it via either FireWire or Thunderbolt cable to the MacBook Pro
Tell the MacBook Pro to boot from the Mac mini which will act as external hard disk drive
The MacBook Pro screen and keyboard will then be in use but you will be configuring the software on the Mac mini hard disk
You can then turn on Screen Sharing
Shutdown the Mac mini and thereafter do everything via Remote Control

  • Lion server on Mac mini server stop responding to ssh and VNC (other services like mail, ical works well)

Lion server on Mac mini server stop responding to ssh and VNC (other services like mail, ical works well)
    Version is Lion server 10.7.4
When I attach a monitor to it, I saw all the buttons and menus stopped responding too. I can only push and hold the power button on the box to shutdown.
    It only started happening recently.
    Anyone has any clue?
Thanks for the help in advance!!!

Found that the second hard drive is broken. I have to go to the apple store to have it replaced.
I had to press the power button to turn the server off for several times, then the broken hard drive went disappeared. After that, I had to disable the Spotlight. Then the server went back to work normally.
Now I made a CCC copy of the primary hard drive, and would like to have the server run on the external raid disk (connected through thunderbolt). Does anyone have previous experience with it? Any expectable drawback or issue with this setup?

how do i reload OS X Server on Mac Mini, App store says installed but no reset or reload, system tells me to reinstall?

Reboot holding down the Command and R keys.  This will get you in to the Recovery partition.  From there you can reinstall the entire OS.  Please note, Server.app will not be included in the reinstall.  You will need to log into your App store account to download it.

  • USB Ethernet Adapter Stopped Working On Mac Mini Server Running 10.6.6

Is anybody out there successfully using the Apple USB Ethernet adapter on a Mac Mini Server running 10.6.6? They have stopped working for me.
The boot disk in the 2009 Mac Mini Server in my classroom failed and after Apple replaced the disk and I reinstalled SLS and ran Software Update to bring the machine up to 10.6.6 the USB Ethernet adapter that was the interface to the outside world no longer recognized when a cable was plugged in. The cable was good and worked just fine if plugged into another machine or the built-in interface. At first I thought that the USB Interface had failed but after trying two new ones (graciously exchanged by Apple) and finding that none of them worked I'm coming to the conclusion that perhaps the warning on the package that the USB Ethernet only works with the MacBook Air finally became true.

Only the specific build of Mac OS X that comes with a MacBook Air includes the kernel extension to run the Apple USB Ethernet adapter, however there are no hardware issues preventing it being used on other Mac models if you have a suitable driver.
Generic USB drivers can be downloaded for free from http://www.sustworks.com/site/newsusbethernet.html and this worked for me.

  • Just bought Windows XP laptop and can't get it to see my mac mini

I bought a netbook for easy cheap web surfing, windows xp.
However, really want it to be able to read Itunes and Photos from my mac mini.
I just can't get it to see the mac mini at all.
I have set up Itunes and photos folders for sharing, and on the sharing page
    set up for windows access.
I have seen various forums where it says log in as windows user in the accounts setting, however my accounts setting does not have this option when you open it.
    I am at a loss.
Does anyone know the way to sort this?
    Many thanks

    Hi- can you please clarify:
    1. Is your netbook and your mac mini connected to the same network? How are you connected to the network? WiFi or LAN? Are you using a router?

  • How to instal Mac OS X 10.4 server on mac mini

I try to install mac osx 10.4 server on mac mini intel solo, but no success. Thanks for assistance.

You basically can't run Mac OS X Server effectively on an Intel machine at this time. There is no Intel-native version of it, and if you install the PowerPC modifications onto an Intel version of Mac OS X client, you can't update it.

  • Home Server with Mac Mini... Best storage solution

I have a Mac Mini which I want to setup as a home server with SL Server. The OS will be installed on the internal disk but I want my data to be stored securely and delivered fast.
Which external storage solution do you recommend:
a.) A Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ (which I already own) with Gigabit ethernet connected to the Gigabit LAN
b.) A Lacie (or other) Raid disk connected via FireWire (400 in my case) to the Mac Mini
    c.) Something else
My Mac Mini is a C2D 1.83GHz with 4Gb RAM and I want to connect my iMac, my iPhone and my girlfriends MacBook to it. A general "household/kids" iMac will be added later. I will connect the Mac Mini via USB to a UPS so that it can shut down safely when mains fails. Which does not happen often over here, but still...
In case b.) the disk shuts down nicely with the Mac. In case a.) the NAS will abrubtly shut down.
I am pretty green when it comes to server stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have two mac mini servers setup as a primary server and secondary backup for our small business. I have two WD 2TB FW 800 drives on the primary with the second backup drive daisy-chained to the first (mini's only have one FW 800 port). I have the secondary drive setup as a timemachine backup for the primary drive. Works great even though my IT guy recommended a "server grade" backup solution like Syncronize or CarbonCopy. From my standpoint, timemachine does exactly what i need and pushes over a GB or two backup in seconds with limited to zero processor usage.
I inquired with my IT guy about getting two NAS drives plugged into my cabinet switch to have full data redundancy on both my primary and secondary server but he recommended against it. he had concerns on speed and couldn't confirm that NAS and mac ACLs worked well together. Any observations on this appreciated.
I would definitely recommend enclosing your setup in a cabinet and getting a UPS. I purchased a 6U cabinet that fits under my desk to secure the minis, data drives, rack UPS and switch after I had 3 bad situations of the drives getting accidentally unplugged.
