Can't read any file within a disk image

A year ago I created a disk image with a few thousand files in as an archive. Periodically I open it and access the files.
Now when I open the dmg, I see all the folders and files, but none of them are usable. No application can open them, for example opening a jpg in Preview yields the message " The file “Picture 1.jpg” could not be opened. It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize. " I get similar meesages from Word, Acrobat, etc. for their files. Basically it appears that every file in the dmg is corrupt.
I have run Disk Utility Repair which said no repair needed; I have run DiskWarrior which found and fixed problems; neither made a difference.
Any suggestions? Running 10.6.8.
Thanks

    I removed chrome 10 and newly installed FF4 final, and I can't read PDF files within the browser. There was no problem in Chrome. I can't even see the acrobat reader plugin in the plugins page. Acrobat 10 is already installed in my PC. Every time I try to read a PDF file on the web, FF tries to download it instead.

    As recommended above by Bernd Alheit, I posted this on the Adobe Reader forum. There, I received the advice to repair the installation under the help menu, which I did and it fixed the problem.
    Similar to your solution but found it's a fix found under "HELP" menu and not Add/Remove.
    Thank you.

  • I can't save any file on externals disk

    Big externals disk (above 100 GB) appears with orange color on the lateral bar. I can't save any file in this externals disk, I only can copy or read files from this disk. However that is possible in small external disk (16, 8GB or below) that appears with white color on lateral bar.
    How can I solve this problem?
    Thanks

    Check the Format of the external drive as it might be formatted for PC read/write but Mac Read only ?
    Select in then hit command-I and look under 'Format' - NTFS is PC 'standard' - if you want a drive to be read and written to by both PC's and Mac's then you need to format it as FAT32

  • Corrupted files within encrypted disk images

    Greetings Apple Hivemind:
    I've run across a repeatable problem when using encrypted disk images from Disk Utility.  Essentially, I'll create an image using settings like are shown below:
    The disk image is then used for storing data.  In my case, this is usually data for Adobe Lightroom.
    At first, this worked very well, and I housed the disk images on my household NAS, connecting via samba (smb) to it on my Mac.  Over time, however, something odd started happening:  Files on those encrypted images began getting corrupted whenever I tried writing new data to them.
    My first incident was where Lightroom informed me that the catalog it was trying to open was corrupted.  I  tried to create a new one on the same encrypted volume, and it too was instantly flagged as corrupted.  I opened the individual image files on the volume with no problem, so I wasn't thinking that the volume was the culprit.  That is, until I tried dragging new image files to it manually.  The new files were immediately either completely unreadable, or a mish-mash of the content of random OTHER files on the volume!
    The result was that all old data seemed intact, but I could no longer write new data to the volumes without major data corruption issues.  I thought that this was isolated to one volume in particular, but it soon started happening on ALL of my encrypted volumes eventually.  Including those which were not, and never had been, housed on my NAS, but were on my local hard drives.
    I've since "evacuated" all my data from these images, since the ones created by Disk Utility appear to be useless, and am seeking an alternative.
    Is this something that anyone else has encountered when using encrypted disk images?  It seems like this is something I should really open a support ticket for, but I can't say I've ever tried it, so I don't know how successful it would be to do so.

    bbonn wrote:
    I should add that I've tried using the "Repair" and "Verify" functions of Disk Utility on the volumes, and despite the obvious issues that exist in them, the utility doesn't find (or fix) any inconsistencies.
    Are you repairing/verifying the actual disk images, or just the partition they're on?  If the partition, it won't look inside them.
    Drag one to Disk Utility's sidebar, select it, then use Verify or Repair.  Note: the usual messages may not appear on the DU window.  Click the Log icon in the toolbar or select Window > Show Log from the menubar to see them.

    With Lightroom 4 I can't read any .DNG files directly into Photoshop CS. I have"camera raw 2.4" selected in LR and the Plug-in for CS is Camera Raw.8BI.
    Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Have you tried a different DNG converter? Adobe released Adobe DNG Converter 5.3 in March of this year. Maybe, if it supports your camera, this version will create a more compatible file.

  • I can't seem to read any file with ImageIO

    I am a rank beginner with Java, so I use a lot of code snippets I find online, and look every move up in the API docs. However, I am just trying to load a simple gif of png to use as a decoration on a panel, and it never succeeds. I successfully create a File from the file, a little image called line.gif. I use ImageIO exactly as it appears in a hundred simple examples and I get and IOException every time with the cause = "Can't read the file!". I am not even sure whether this means it can't deode the image or can't find the file.
    Here's the trivial code:
    BufferedImage img = null;
    try {
    //String formats[] = ImageIO.getReaderFormatNames();
    File imgFile = new File("line.gif");
    img = ImageIO.read(imgFile );
    The file is in the same directory as my java files, and I see that NetBeans has copied it to the build directory where my classes are being placed. I am sure I am doing something really dumb, but it looks like a blank wall. I hope you can help me because I have already spent a ridiculous amount of time on it.

    Thanks for some excellent advice. The NetBeans IDE confused me and I wasn't understanding where my working directory was, but I just found it before coming online and seeing your answer.
    I have another question at this point. Is it possible to build the images into your jar when you are ready to do put it all together, or do I have to keep them together with the code but outside the jar?

  • "Can't read from or write to disk...." iPod error

    I recently switched from my old PowerBook G4 (running Leopard 10.5.2) to a newer MacBook Pro (running Leopard 10.5.5). I migrated my account and permissions from the PB to the MacBook Pro, and everything is working just fine except for iTunes (version 8.0.2) and my older 160 GB iPod Classic (running 1.1.2).
    NOTE: THE VERSION OF iTunes ON THE PB WAS VERSION 8.0.1.
    Since the migration, I've been getting this "can't read from or write to disk..." error whenever I attempt to sync my iPod to iTunes. Previously, I'd never had any problems. I have tried to restore the iPod using iTunes - didn't work. I have tried different USB to dock connector cables - didn't work. I have even tried completely re-formatting the iPod using Disk Utility - didn't work. Everytime I begin syncing the iPod, it starts out just fine. At varying degrees of completion it ALWAYS fails with the same error.
    I had an idea. I tried syncing the iPod to a different computer - my G5 4 x 2.5 GHz (running Leopard 10.5.5) with iTunes (version 8.0.2). I still got the same error. I haven't dropped it, submerged it in water or done anything to it that would otherwise compromise its functionality. So, I'm at a loss.
    PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE!
    Does anyone have any other suggestions? - OTHER THAN BUYING A NEW IPOD

    UPDATE:
    OK, after the visit to my Genius Bar; I thought of a variable that wasn't previously considered. Because their transfer of media was successful without the slightest hitch, I had to figure out something else.
    Everytime I had tried to sync the iPod with my various Macs, I was using the same process. Since all of my music and movies "live" on an external 500 GB drive, I was attempting to use that same drive whenever I would try to sync. It occurred to me that possibly the failing was in the drive and not the iPod.
    I have part of that library on a Power Mac G4 867 DP (running 10.4.9). I updated the iTunes on that machine to 8.0.2, connected the iPod and made a successful transfer of a large amount of media!
    My only problem now is that I can't figure out how to get the 500 GB drive to stop hanging on transfer and update of my Genius information. The drive just completely stalls and I get the spinning wheel from iTunes and the application ceases to respond. When I force quit iTunes, the drive recovers fine. I don't have any problems transferring data to and from it and Disk Utility reports that the drive is healthy.
    I have tried re-installing iTunes on all affected Macs - didn't help. I believe my problem may exist in the iTunes Library file or in the associated .xml document. My only concern is that if I do a completely fresh install of iTunes where those files would be re-created, I would lose all of my play and ratings data as well as the information about when my files were added. On a related note, when playing the music from this drive through iTunes. I don't have any issues at all.
    ANY SUGGESTIONS?

  • Adobe DNG Converter can't recognize any files

    Hi All!
    I'm new here and would very  much appreciate help.
    I am running a Mac OS X 10.04.11 and would  like to open .CR2 files (native file from my Canon 500D) in PS4      / Bridge  CS4. My problem is that although I have downloaded the Adobe DNG Converter and Camera Raw 5.1  update as described  here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4057,  the DNG Converter can't recognise any files at  all (they are greyed-out  when I go to select any folder). I also followed these steps from the aforementioned link (well at  least I hope I did it right, I found the reference to step 4 slightly  confusing):
    To install with Adobe Creative  Suite 4 or Photoshop CS4:
    Automated installation on Mac or Windows®:
    1. Select "Updates..." from the Help menu
    2. Follow the on-screen dialogs to download and  install the latest  available Camera Raw update
    Manual installation on Mac:
    1. Exit Photoshop CS4 and Adobe Bridge.
    2. Open the Finder.
    3. Navigate to the root of the local disk (not the user's home  folder).
    4. Navigate to: (Please read directory carefully)
    Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS4/File Formats
    5. Move the existing plug-in to another location (for example, a new  folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need  to revert back.
    6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw, from the download  into the same folder as in Step 4.
    7. Launch Photoshop CS4 or Adobe Bridge.
    Is that version the right one for CS4?
    Only Finder and the Canon Software can preview my .CR2  files, Photoshop still gives the message: "Could   not complete  your request because Photoshop does not recognise this  type of file." and   Bridge only shows me a generic RAW thumbnail. This message also  appears in PS when I double-click on the  Camera-RAW.plugin. I also  restarted my computer,  but that didn't fix it.
    Can  anyone help me out please? I'd urgently need a solution.
    Thanks in advance!

    I now uninstalled the older 5.1 version and  instead installed the DNG Converter 6.3 separately and it works  perfectly.
    About the Camera Raw 5.6 update: I also downloaded the plug-in  (which I think should be the last version CS4 supports) and can now open  my .CR2 files in PS, Bridge previews them too. :-)
    Is it advisable to keep both, .CR2 as well as .DNG files? Why is it  that my .DNG files are lighter than the native .CR2?
    Thanks again!

  • HELP! I attempted to erase free space and now I can't open any files!

    Hi everyone! I hope you can help me with my problem.
    Last night, I attempted to erase free space from my HD using disk utility. During the operation, the computer hung, so it wasn't able to complete 'creating temporary file' operation. So i had to stop the operation. And now, I can't open any files! Turns out my HD was full. But prior to my attempt to erase free space, I still had 25GB out of 55GB of free space. What happened? And how do I fix it? A lot of important files are in my HD and I don't want to lose any of it.
    Hope somebody could help me. Thanks a lot!

    Hi, Scary isn't it? I did the self same thing. Check your trash, you should see one or more disk images there. Empty the trash. All will be OK thereafter.
    If they're not there, restart and either the system will sort itself out or they will appear in the trash, so empty it.
    See here for my thread on the same subject.

    If you are having the same problem, i.e. a disk permission problem, open your favorite search engine and search on, "change disk permissions", and I think you'll find plenty of information on how to fix the problem. This is a Lightroom forum. Your problem is with your operating system. There is no sense in rewriting instructions that are already available if you do a simple search.
