Can't read Apple Mail e-mail

Every time I try to access a particular e-mail account, I get the following error message in the base of the e-mail message:
has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.
I've tried rebuilding the e-mail account. Didn't work. Tried deleting all mail and account. Exit Apple Mail, and add new account, still happens. This does not happen with any other e-mail account, and I have like 10 of them.
Any suggestions? This is really fustrating, as it does not happen on my Macbook Pro, only MacPro unit.
Help!!!!

Deleting a mail account causes all your mail stored in that account’s mailboxes to be deleted as well (and Mail warned you that this would happen). If you deleted the account, you should not even get the “has not been downloaded from the server” error message. If you see that, it has to be because you did something else in addition to deleting the account, such as setting up the same account twice before deleting it. More info, please.
How many mail accounts exactly do you have in Mail > Preferences > Accounts and what type are they (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?
Report the names of the files and folders present at the first level of the ~/Library/Mail/ folder in the Finder.
In order to post the exact file names and avoid typing mistakes, proceed as follows. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. With that folder open, if you’re looking at it in View > as List mode, first collapse any expanded folders so that the Finder only shows the files and folders at the first level of ~/Library/Mail/. Now, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste it in your reply to this post.
Before actually posting that information, edit it so that the file/folder names do not reveal any details you should keep private, e.g. replace any real username with “username” to hide your real email address. Other than that, report the file/folder names as accurately as possible.
Which of the account folders is supposed to be the one associated with the account that has the problem? How many .emlx files do its mailboxes contain? How many messages would you expect to be there?
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

Can I use Apple Mail on my ipad and on a pc using safari browser

You would configure the iPad to connect to your email provider's IMAP servers.  How that's done is specific to whatever mail provider you use.  If it's one of the major email services like AOL, Hotmail or Yahoo, then you should be able to just create a new mail account on the iPad and follow the instructions you see on the iPad.  If your email is not listed, then you'll need to contact your mail provider so you can know what to enter for the server name, etc.

How can I use apple mail (linked to gmail) and get it to only do autofill on the contacts that I have in apple address book? Everytime I write an email on the Apple mail app (as well as in Gmail) it recommends a bunch of emails that are not my contacts. I want it to just autofill for the contacts that I have in my address book. Is this possible? Thank you. I have an Imac Intel version and an Iphone 5 phone.

  • Recently changed my password for mail, can still read my mail, but the drop down keeps appearing, asking for my password and saying it's incorrect. Totally confused.

I Recently changed the password for mail, on iMac. I can still read my mail, but the drop down keeps appearing, asking for my password, then telling me it's incorrect. Totally confused.

If your password is accepted, and Mail connects to the account, but you're prompted for the password repeatedly, take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Note: these steps don't apply if the server rejects the password. That's a different problem.
    Step 1
When prompted for the password, check the box marked Remember this password in my keychain.
    Step 2
Check that the keychain is working.
    Step 3
Check that the default keychain is unlocked.

Google has a support notice that may explain the problem here: http://support.google.com/mail/answer/82350?hl=en
Apple has a built-in method for setting up Gmail accounts that makes sure that they are set up properly.
Go to System Preferences under the Apple menu and select Mail, Contacts & Calendars. In the left-hand sidebar select the Add Account… item. In the main window select Gmail. Enter the information in the drop down sheet.
As for Pacbell I don't know what the proper settings are and could only find these from a third party so proceed with caution. http://www.emailserversettings.com/category/pacbell

  • How can I get Apple Mail to show recipient's full name AND email address

    In Apple Mail v 6.3 (1503):
I am sending an email to a recipient listed in my Contacts. The recipient has 3 or more email addresses listed in Contacts. I want to send the email to some or all of the addresses.
As I start typing the guys name, the autocomplete feature gives me choices - ie.:  In the TO: field and I select the first one, then the 2nd and so on.
However, what gets displayed in the TO: Box is this:
    Bill Clinton <[email protected]>
    Bill Clinton
    Bill Clinton
    Bill Clinton
So, it is not displaying the address between the <       >.
so how can I get all three addresses to display like the first one which shows both the name of the guy (as listed in contacts "FIRST" "LAST") and then the actual email address).
For example I'd like it to show:
    Bill Clinton <[email protected]>
    Bill Clinton <[email protected]>
    Bill Clinton <[email protected]
    Bill Clinton <[email protected]>
Any direction in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not at my Mac to check, but try turning off Smart Addresses in the Viewing tab of Mail's Preferences.

  • Can't read old mail after new Tiger install

I recently installed Tiger (and archived my old system) as an upgrade from 10.3.9. Since then, I can't read old messages in Mail. The original messages are deleted from my isp server once the messages are downloaded by Mail. When I open any message in Mail received before I insttalled Tiger I see, where one would normally see the body of the message, the following:
"The message from [email protected] concerning “Your receipt from Apple Store, xxxxx” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
When I attempt to reply to one of these messages, I can't type anything into the body of the message.
I am online when this happens. I see no "icons" (ie an lightening bolt) next to my inbox; everything appears to be normal. I, also, have approximately 20 gb of free space on my hard drive.
Any suggestions as to how I might retrieve or open old messages? Thanks.

The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
More specifically, if this is a POP account, the following procedure should allow you to fix the Inbox problem. A similar procedure should allow you to fix other mailboxes that might also be affected:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn’t need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-T0x... folders to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn’t work as expected. If you’ve been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account’s Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that’s not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that’s on the Desktop.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated now. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you want and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Take a look at the following article (also referenced in the thread I mentioned at the beginning of this post) to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON’T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • How can I stop Apple Mail from scrolling to top as image loads?

Hi, I receive a daily email that includes dozens of inline images (it's the TechCrunch daily email, FYI). When I open it in Apple Mail, every time an image loads, the scroll bar jumps back to the top of the email. This effectively makes it impossible to read any of the email until after all the images load, since as I start to read it from the top, a moment later (as the next image down further in the email loads), it jumps me right back to the very top of the email. The only way I can read the email is to open it in Apple Mail and then sit there for a moment until all the images load. (I can't even switch to another window or put that email window in the background-- Apple Mail apparently is smart enough to not load images when the window isn't front-and-center.)
Needless to say, this is a super-annoying issue I haven't ever seen this in any other email program and I think it definitely counts as a bug (or at the very least, a supreme, supreme annoyance).
Anyone else seeing this, and/or have a solution?
    Thanks--
    Eric

This is happening to me too, and I have had enough of it! I never got around to complaining about it, and I suspect many others are the same way. However, I think it is fair to call it a 'bug' and that apple should make a statement or fix about it

  • How can I stop apple mail from autosaving drafts?

    Hello all,
I have finally got myself a new computer and been immersed in the "new" way- my old mac was a bit like a volkswagen beetle, old and cranky but very efficient.
This new interlaced madness is proving to be very confusing on many levels but here I will state one problem I am seeking a solution to:
Apple mail autosaves  a copy of my email reply drafts every 30 seconds in my apple mail draft folder. - This means many copies are saved!!!
    How do I stop this?
The reason I ask this is for the following reasons:
1- If I don't send my reply after 30 seconds I have to manually delete the drafts.- I didn't know this until I was doing a little organising and have realised that I have quite a few drafts of the same message lying around in my google on mac (imap) "all mail" folder and these end up taking alot of space.
2- These then get transfered to my google mail "all mail" folder and end up taking up more space.
3- Manually deleting things from my google on mac "all mail" account is a pain in the *** because I need to delete it into the googletrash on mac and not any other deleting area. (unless I do it directly from gmail) I didn't know this until I had a read through google- the "all mail" archive is another pain in the ***.
I was deleting these messages from my mac "all mail" mailbox and they just magically reappeared into the same "all mail" mailbox, meaning they are downloaded from the server continually- I hate to think how much more that adds to data roaming.
Possible solutions I have tried out:
1- uncheck the "save draft on server" box in mail;preferences;mailbox behaviour (and saving it) - I did this and tried to write a message and there it appeared as each 30 seconds passed
2- change the mac mailbox behaviour settings to gmail Imap settings for apple mail and save these- as above, I wrote a message and it still appeared in my drafts folder, new, message appearing every 30 seconds.
3- uncheck the "use idle command if server suppors it"  box in mail;preferences; accounts;advanced (as someone mentions in another forum) and the message still autosaves.
    HELP!
    1. This seems to be common with most people
    2. I am using gmail and IMAP on mac book pro 2012 10.7.4, lion
    3. This never happened with my volkswagen which was also a mac but from 2006
    4. Some people say this is Imap related. I have only noticed it with this apple mail and have read it has been happening to people since 2008.
    5. Look forward to new solutions

I'm having a similar but slightly different problem. My company just migrated to Gmail, and it's saving mail drafts every 30 seconds into my Trash folder.
I unchecked the "Show in IMAP" preference in the Gmail settings, but my Drafts folder completely disappeared. I went back and checked it and the folder reappeared (with my drafts still in there).
I like the idea if starting an email on my laptop and having the option of finishing it on my iPhone or iPad, so only saving Drafts locally would not be ideal.

  • Mail IMAP after 10.5.2 can't read ANY mails in boxes with non-ascii names

I have Mail with IMAP that connects to a regular MAC OS X Tiger server running IMAP.
After upgrading to 10.5.2 on the client, Mail can no longer read ANY mails at all in any mailbox whose path contains a non-ascii character!
Hence: If a box is called 'Övrigt', it only lists the mails in the mail box, but it will not show any of the contents of any of the mails! Hence, I cannot access any of these mails! Catastrophic!
I have to downgrade to 10.5.1, unless someone knows of a workaround.

Same problem here (or at least in part). Some .mac folders did no longer show any messages, while they were there and could be seen online and with Thunderbird. After your remark I changed the name of a folder which contained a "´" and now it works. It is really strange because there is another folder with a "¨" in it which does not work (I will test if the name change works with this folder as well in a minute) whilst there is another one with such name which works fine. The update really messed up Mail and in Dutch we just use such characters so Mail without supporting them will be rather useless for me...

I have an iMac (Tiger) and a MBPro (Leopard). I usually download and read Safari mail on my iMac; however, there are times when I am using my MBPro that I would like to be able to read the mail that is on my iMac. When you say your computer no longer works, I'm going to assume you cannot boot up and you cannot de-activate from the menu per the instructions above.  Instead, then, call Adobe and have them reset/de-activate all devices.  I thought I remembered doing this once online (rather than making a call), but I can't seem to find the option in my online account.
