Can't Read Job Contract Sent in MicrosoftWord PDF!

I can read PDFs sent by email from my husband's former employer. AppleWorks pops up and then MacLink Plus translates them automatically. However, on the job contract his new employer just sent him, AppleWorks and MacLink Plus do NOT pop up. Instead, Preview comes on and the files look like a bunch of zeroes with a few "d"s thrown in. The contract is about 10 pages long; is it the length of it that is causing the problem? He needs to print out this new contract and get it in the mail. Thanks for any advice, and please keep it simple!

Hi Cornelius
I don't think Camillia was using Adobe Acrobat, but I think you are on the right track.
Camillia:
Apparently there are different forms of .pdf . Are you sure it was created by Microsoft word and not Adobe Acrobat as later versions of Adobe in windows are not universally accessible in Panther's Preview.
Try using Acrobat as Cornelius infers. If you don't have it you can get it of the net, just make sure it is one for Mac OS X 10.3 or later.
And with Acrobat, to keep it simple, drag this .pdf document onto Acrobat because double clicking it will make it open in Preview, which you don't want.

  • I can't read a file with the ext PDF the sender informed me that the file was reset to PDF.

I can't read a file with the .ext PDF the sender informed me that the file was reset to PDF. But when I tried to open it the caption box informed me"the file is not in PDF format. I suspect the sender simply changed the file .ext which is why I can't open it! What can I do about it! I am working on an iPad.
    Thanks
    Mr Jim Lapthorn

If the document is not, in fact, a PDF, then you will need to get your sender to provide a PDF.
Can you open this document in any other application?

  • Can't read messages in sent folder

We can't read any messages in the sent folder. The window only shows the following message:
+The message from Nicki Frech <[email protected]> concerning “test” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.+
We cannot see what settings to change so that the sent messages are available on the computer. Many thanks for any help!

Have a look in Mail > Preferences > Accounts, Special Mailboxes tab at Sent, and see what it reports for, +Erase copies of sent messages when:+
If it is a short period like one day, or on quitting Mail, then they may be erased accordingly.
You could set it to never to keep them permanently.

  • Pages on iPhone can't read Pages documents sent from Mac

My new MacMini (Yosemite) isn't compatible with my old Word files; it saves them in Pages. When I tried reading these on my iPhone, nada. Customer Support said I needed to buy the Pages app   (I was surprised it wasnt included since my iOs software is also current). So I bought that for $10 --- and still get the same blank grey screen saying <Original.pages   Pages document    270 KB> ---- but nothing else ---  when I try to open the Pages doc (whether from Dropbox, or directly downloaded from an email).

Please update your tag line. It still says you are on OS X 10.3.9
You simply have your Word files set to be opened by Pages. Fix that by selecting a Word file in Finder:
Menu > File > Get Info > Open with > choose Word > Change All
Your iPhone must be older than September 2013 which is when Apple started offering Pages for free.
Are you saying transferred files are blank on your iPhone? How do they appear on your Mac?

  • Cant read my encrypted sent mail

I'm able to send encrypted mail and have the recipients read it without any problems, however I'm unable to read those mails in my send folder.  All I see is the smime.p7m attachment. I can also read encrypted mail sent to me by others without any problems.
Any ideas why I cant read my own encrypted mail?  Started happening after upgrading to Mavericks and adding a new mail certificate for myself didn't resolve the problem.

First, the address associated with the S/MIME public key must exactly match the address to which you're trying to send the encrypted message. The matching is case-sensitive. "[email protected]" does not match "[email protected]".
The recipient's certificate must be valid: not self-signed, expired, or revoked. You can check the status of the certificate in Keychain Access (see below.)
If you can't encrypt messages to a valid address with a valid certificate, continue.
    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select
              Change Settings for Keychain "login"
In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences... ▹ First Aid
If the box labeled Keep login keychain unlocked is not checked, check it.
Select Keychain from the menu bar and repair the keychain.
Quit and relaunch Mail. Test. If the problem isn't resolved, continue.
Export all S/MIME certificates, delete them from the keychain, and reimport. For instructions, select
              Help ▹ Keychain Access Help
from the menu bar and search for the term "export" in the help window. Export each certificate as an individual file; don't combine them into one big file.
Test again. If the test fails, delete all the certificates again, then reinstall them from fresh copies.

  • Can't read new messages in IN folder

This is similar to Spirelli's problem "Can't read messages in sent folder" of 28 August except the problem is with newly downloaded mail. Any unread mail (even from days or weeks ago read as: +The message from "Fae Gleisner" <[email protected]> concerning “SUBJECT OF EMAIL” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.+
This happens after MAIL (1.3.11) has been open for a while (sometimes for only a few minutes; somestimes for an hour. The only way to read the messages is to QUIT MAIL and then re-open it.
This happened a few months ago and then mysteriously corrected.
In Mail > Preferences > Accounts, Special Mailboxes tab at Sent, and see what it reports for, Erase copies of sent messages when: is set for NEVER.
    Thanks, Robert

And again, if this is a POP account, you probably have the problem described in the following article:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
If you’re just starting to experience the problem, doing what the article suggests might work. If you’ve let the problem to become worse over time, however, it may be too late to solve it as described in the article. Post back with your observations.

  • Can't read sent emails

    Hi
Whenever I open a message in my "sent" box I get the following message:
"The message from XYZ <email address> concerning “subject” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
My account is online and receiving and sending fine. I just can't read any emails I've sent.
    Any clues?

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
If you are running 10.3.9, as your information shows, then you have an overstuffed mailbox. See:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121837
If you are running Tiger (10.4.x) then it may be a different problem.
More info, please, perhaps before you attempt any fix.

  • I can't read documents sent to me in Adobe.   I had changed some setting but don't remember which on

I can not read Adobe documents.   I changed the settings to try to send something to someone so they could view it in Windows.   Now I can't change it back

    Okay, thet helps.
You can't convert a PDF with Reader. It doesn't have that capability. There IS a service online for that (ExportPDF), but that wouldn't cause what you describe.
A PDF is what's called a "post script" or "printed" document. It's composed basically the same way a document is sent to your printer - as "unicode". Reader and Acrobat have the translators to interpret the unidcode and display it as text in the pages. Microsoft Office Word doesn't do that. If you try to open a PDF with Word, it's just a bunch of garbled characters. So the PDF needs to be saved for Word or "converted". There are two ways to do that.
    1. Subscribe to the ExportPDf service through Adobe.com (https://www.acrobat.com/exportpdf/en/convert-pdf-to-word.html)
    2. Purchase (or download a 30 day trial of) Acrobat Standard or Porfessional which CAN convert the PDF. (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html?promoid=JOLIR)
Both of those aren't really necessary and would be frivolous since Reader, as I stated in my first post, opens PDFs in Windows, Mac and Linux universally, and since Reader is free, anyoine can install it to view PDFs regardless of the original source.
As to your specific issue; it would seem that you may have changed a file association for PDFs. That can be easily undone. All you need to do is right click a PDF and chose "Properties".
Under the General tab, to the right of "Opens with" it shows the default program to open PDFs... it probably shows something other than Reader right now, but there's a  Change" button. Click it and... if Reader ISN'T in the list of recommended programs, click "Browse" and navigate to C/Program Files/Adobe/Reader 11.0/Reader (it'll be in Program Files (x86) if your Vista is 64 bit). Select AcroRd32.exe as the default program to open PDFs, by clicking "Open", clicking "OK" and clicking "Apply" to set the default for ALL PDFs.

  • Can't read the e mail you sent me about adobe flash player, said unauthorized

received e mail from Allan Eckert. can not read said unauthorized.

Somebody here is attempting to contact Allan Eckert on your behalf.
Please post the full text of the error message, or a screen shot of the message.  When you do that, please avoid posting any email addresses, and any sensitive information.  Mail that's "unauthorized" is an unusual diagnostic, so there may be something else going on here — the exact text of the error message can sometimes help resolve these cases, too.
If you're really on OS X 10.5, you're probably not going to be able to run the most recent Flash Player, which means you won't have the security fixes from the most recent releases.  The current Adobe Flash Player requires Mac OS X v10.6 and later though — per what Adobe has posted in their system requirements — doesn't yet support 10.10.
I'd generally avoid Flash Player entirely, due to its long history of security problems, and issues with performance and stability.  Switch to H.264 video where you can, and there are tools which make that easier.

  • How can I change a contract from one family line to another?

I have a 5 line family plan.  I lost my job months ago and have to cut expenses.  I want to keep a phone number that is no longer under contract and shut off one that is still under contract.  Can I switch the contract to the other phone number?

Sue, Verizon won't let you do what you want you, PERIOD. Verizon won't change contract dates.
HOWEVER, there is an EASY way to accomplish what you want to do. Since the number you want to keep is free of contract, you can port-out the number temporarily without ETF, and a few days after the port-out, you can port-in the number to replace the number that has the contract. End result: Exactly what you want to do.
Go to Sears/ Walmart / Best Buy and buy a cheap $5 / $10 Tracfone. Activate the Tracfone and port-in your number (one without contract) from Verizon on the Tracfone service. Once the  porting is done, your number will work on the Tracfone. Wait a few days. Then initiate a port-in YOUR number on one of the existing verizon lines. There are no charge to port in or out.

What program are you printing from?  Does the same thing happen if you print from Notepad or Wordpad?  (If not then check the settings in your program to make sure you are sepcifying then entire page range desired for printing).
