Can't read my backup CDs/DVDs

I'm not sure if this is an OS X question or a MBP question but here goes.
I have several backups burnt via normal OS X burner and in toast of CDs and DVDs with applications, pictures etc. None of these will read on my MBP running OS X 10.4.7
Some of these were burned on the MBP and some on an 12" PB that I no longer have.
If anyone could tell me how I can get in to these, please let me know. I've lost hundreds upon hundreds of pictures if I can't access them.
Thanks in advance.

Hi musicsites,
can you read any CD or DVD? It might be a problem with your optical drive. To verify that try to mount these disks on another Mac. If they mount there you have the confirmation that it is a hardware problem.

  • After I upgraded to Yosemite iphoto can't recognize my backup CDs which were created in iLife09. Ihave the original applications install disk and my old hard drive(I upgraded  to SSD). How do I get a n iphoto back to read by old CDs?

After I upgraded to Yosemite,iPhoto can't recognize my backup CDs created in iLife 09. The applications install disk won't install iphoto because iphoto 9.5 is already installed..I updated to a SSD and have the original Hard Drive with an updated iphoto which recognized the older CDs(thanks to iphoto expander). I thought that the iphoto that transferred with the new hard drive was the same as what was on the old one. I guess it wasn't. I really need to access my backups.   HELP

Later version of iPhoto write to the library on opening, and so cannot open libraries on optical media, as that cannot be written to. Further, optical media is going e way of the floppy disk. Therefore, you need to use a different form of archiving and back up going forward.
To allow iPhoto to open these libraries you need to copy them to your Mac or an attached external disk.
To merge them into an existing Library will require that you use either Aperture (if you have it) or iPhoto Library Manager.

I am running Mac OSX 10.4.11. According to the System profiler the CD/DVD drive is a "PioneerDVD-RWDVR-112D." When I compare the information under this heading, the only unusual difference from my iMac is that the G5 reads "Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)." My iMac reads "Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)."
Under the System Preferences the options are set to "Ask what to do" when a blank CD or DVD is inserted. Music CD set to open iTunes, Picture CD set to open iPhoto, Video DVD set to open DVD player.
    Do you have any suggestions?

My iMac suddenly can't read the backup hard drive I've been using for Time Machine.  I tried unplugging the cord that connects the HD to the iMac and plugging it back in, but I still get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" below which are buttons for Initialize, Ignore and Eject.  I was using a cord that went from larger square plug to larger square plug.  So then I tried one that went from smaller square plug to what I think is USB (thin rectangular plug) of the sort that connects the keyboard and mouse. It's the type that my printers and scanners use to connect to the iMac.  I did NOT just upgrade the OS or anything.  The external HD is an OWC Mercury Elite All Pro. It's worked fine since I got the iMac 4 years ago. What else can I try before just trying to initialize and

Thanks, Michael!  I do hear it at times spooling up and running. Just after I bumped the thread I looked for troubleshooting for this drive online and found the manual which suggested using Disk Utility which I've seen before accidentally (if I hit Command Shift U instead of Shift U to type "Unit" on a new folder for a student's homework ) but had never really noticed.   Disk Utility does see it and also a sub-something (directory?) which might be the Time Machine archives on the disk, called disk1s2), sort of the way that my iMac's hard drive shows up as 640.14 GB Nitachi HDT7... and has a sub-something titled DB iMac, which is what I named my iMac's hard drive.
Anyway the owner's manual just shows the image under the formatting section, not the troubleshooting section, but as soon as I saw it in the manual I remembered seeing it accidentally a few times, went to it, and am now verifying the disk.  Right now it's telling me that it will take 2 hours to complete the verification, so I guess I have a bigt of a wait.  :-)
Does that fact that Disk Utilities can see it mean it's not failed, or just that it hasn't completely failed?
I can see the virtue in having multiple redundant backups, or at least two backups. What do you suggest?  Two external hard drives?  I had this one linked by ethernet, and but I also have a cord that could link it by USB (like a printer), so if this one is reparable I could get a second one and link it by USB.  If this one is not reparable I could get two and do the same thing.  I do have an Airport so I suppose it's possible to get some sort of Wi-Fi hard drive (my new printer/scanner uses only the network and not a cable, although it has a cable that I used for the initial installation), but I'd suspect a Wi-Fi hard drive might have a higher price.
What hard drives, if any, do you recommend? I seem to recall that when I was looking at external hard drives 4 years ago, Apple's were substantially more expensive, which is why I got the OWC Mercury Elite All Pro.

  • Satellite 5200-903: Can't read my burning Data-DVD

    Hallo,
i have a problem with my DVD/CD-ROM. It can't read anymore of my Data-DVD (backups of my harddrives) , which I burned with the same. Also it can read Movie-DVDs only after I put the DVDs in and out a couple of times. It has no problems with CDs.
Do you think it's a software or a hardware problem.
    Thanks,
    Matthias

    Hi Matthias,
This sounbds like a possible hardware problem to me. As you know the laser has to be re-phased to handle DVDS and the allowable tolerances are much smaller. Hence your unit can handle CDs correvtly but is struggling with DVDs.
Have you tried cleaning the lens in your DVD-ROM, this may improve the situation for you.
    Best of Luck

  • Can you make a backup on DVD of OS X 10.5.8?

After spending an hour+ on the phone with support.... I was told I can put Leopard 10.5.8 on my "new to me" G5 desktop, but I'd have to find a 3rd party... blah blah to download. After hanging up, I go to talk to husband and find his laptop has 10.5.8.  Can we copy this onto a DVD, then install it on mine? If so, how would we do that??????????  This old woman is seriously aggravated.

    Two options:
Boot your computer into Target Disk Mode and connect it to his computer using a Firewire cable. Boot his computer normally. You should find a disk icon on his Desktop for the hard drive in your computer. Use Disk Utility to clone his hard drive to yours using the Restore option of DU.
Get an external Firewire drive, clone his drive to the external drive. Boot your computer from the external drive then use Disk Utility to clone the external drive to your computer's hard drive.

  • Time Machine Backup:  Can I read a backup from a different Mac?

I have two macs. One is a Macbook Pro, recently Time Machine Backuped, out for service. The other is a G4 iMac running Tiger. Can I read files from the back-up from my macbook pro? I can search the folders.... but do not actually see the files. So, I think I could be either looking in the wrong place or my old iMac is just not able to see them.
If I upgrade my G4 iMac to 10.5.6.... will I be able to see all files on the other computer's backup?
In other words... if you have two macs that have time machine.... will I be able to view the other macs' back-up and use files?

Sorry, I missed the other Mac being on Tiger. Pullman is right -- TM's backups may look to us mere mortals like ordinary files and folders, but they most certainly aren't. Apple had to make some changes to the basic OSX file system to make TM's magic work, so I'd expect Tiger to be completely confuzzled by it.
And yes, once updated to Leopard, one Mac can look at (and restore from) another Mac's backups.

  • Can't read or burn CDs, but DVDs work just fine (reading, burning, ripping)

This isn't a new problem for my computer, its an issue thats been there since I got it (March 2008), I just haven't had it fixed yet.
My computer won't play or rip any cds (usually doesn't mount them, just spits them out) Also has trouble burning cds, but I have successfully burned a few.
Never had any problem mounting, playing, ripping, or burning DVDs though.
Anyone know of a way to fix this without taking it into an apple store?
And if I do take it in, how long would it take them to fix it?

I took it to the apple store, they did a test to see if it was a hardware or software issue, determined it was a hardware issue and replaced the optical drive.

  • Qosmio F30-112 - DVD drive can't read and burn some DVD's

    Hey everybody!
Here is the problem: My DVD-ROM won't read some DVD's it won't burn. In Nero when it start burn error pop up and the message is: Power calibration error
I've alerady tried with all testers for burner and reader and they all didn't found any problem. They said that burner and reader are working correctly. I even reinstalled Windows Vista couple of times end it still show me that error and it won't burn or read some DVD's (which I tried to read another computer and there was no problem). I tried to clean it with cleaners and nothing.
I think that problem started since I updated firmwire F103, but I'm not sure...
    Help please.

    Hi!
Was the firmware update made for your CD/DVD drive or do you have anohter one? In my opinion the drive could be faulty due a wrong firmware
But before you exchange the drive you should try to remove the upper and lower filters in Windows registry:
    1) Start Regedit (Start -> Run -> Regedit)
    2) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3) In the right pane, delete the "UpperFilters" key, and delete the "LowerFilters" key.
    4) Reboot.
    Bye

  • Can iMac read this type of DVD?

    Matshita DVD-R
I have heard some type of writable DVD's do not work with Macs. Does this one?
    Thanks A lot!

    Hi there,
That DVD-R should work in your Mac.
The best way to check which media types are supported is to go to Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info > toggle Hardware and highlight Disc Burning... you should see a list of supported media for your Mac...
With that said, some brands do work better than others and some brands just don't work. The major brands all seem to work well, Verbatim DVD-R is my choice and it has not failed me yet.

Hello ,My DVD RW Driver (F, in my HP Pavilion dv7-3186cl Entertainment Notebook PC / Operating System 64-bit, after installing new hardware ( printer ) can not read CD’s or DVD’s is not working ,How can I fix it?

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the relevant link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive is now working.
If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

  • Can I download images from a DVD created with a newer version of iPhoto?

Hi, my first discussion forum! Why can't I download image files from a DVD created on my mother's computer(iMac G4 with Mac OS 10.4.11)?. She's running iPhoto6 and I'm running iPhoto5. Are'n't they compatible? The disc loads up OK then says at the bottom of iPhoto page "No Photos". Have tried with several disks. Many Thanks for yr help anyone.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
No, iPhoto 5 can't read a library or DVD created in iPhoto 6, because the structure of the libraries are much different.
Your Mac should be able to read the DVD. Use the Finder to copy the contents of the disc to your Desktop. Then from iPhoto, you can File > Import to library the Originals folder that you copied from the DVD. If your mom did lots of photo editing, you could also import the Modified folder. However, there is no way for you to re-link the edits to their originals. You will not be able to access her keywords, titles, ratings, and other iPhoto organizational metadata.
    Regards.

Can the iMac dvd drive read or accept minid-dvds/cds? Thanks

Don't even attempt it. It won't work, and the disk will just get stuck in the drive's mechanism. If you want to use mini-disks, you'll need an external tray-loading optical drive.

  • Satellite Pro M30 - Can't burn CDs/DVDs

    Hi!
Ever since I got my machine, I haven't been able to burn any CDs or DVDs whatsoever. I keep getting a "Power calibration error", which I normaly would assume means the drive's broke. But seeing as this is a completely new drive (less then a month old) and it can read every CD and DVD I throw at it, I doubt it's a hardware issue. After a few minutes of googling, I came across a thread made by other people experiencing the same problem with this very same drive (Mat****a UJ-820S), but with no good solution (atleast none that worked for me).
Below is a log from Nero (6.6.0.1 (older versions also tried)). I hope it's of some use, as this is getting very frustrating.. Thanks.

Here is how I just fixed my woes:
In short: Go into Device-Manager and Select IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers: Try changing to "PIO Only" mode instead of "Ultra DMA Mode" on the IDE Channel which your DVD-Drive is using, namely the Secondary IDE Channel (since the 1st is probably your disk). It should say "Location 1" on the tab of where the drive is NOT zero.
Ultra-DMA is obviously newer and faster and better, but I think that it still gets the specified performance from the PIO-mode. Took me around 10 minutes to write around 3 gigs.
    (1) uninstall manually every device driver which looked even remotely connected to "Mat****a" or "DVD" or "CD" INCLUDING "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller" and "Secondary IDE Channel".
    (2) ensured a hard restart (power-off)
    (3) allowed Windows to auto-detect whatever hardware it pops up after reboot commences
    (4) one of those items was the "Secondary IDE Channel"... or in any case... go into Control Panel->System->Hardware : Secondary IDE Channel.
    (a) Change from "Ultra DMA mode" to "PIO Only mode"
    (5) Go back into the Control Panel->Hardware->Device Manager->IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers->Secondary IDE Channel : Transfer Mode = "PIO Only" to make sure that this reinstallation you just experienced kept that setting, if not, set it as such, and again, DO NOT change your "location 0" setting, the tab displaying your secondary ide channel should say "location 1".
    (5) hard-reboot again
    (6) system should come up and auto-detect your CD-ROM / DVD-ROM / Optical Drive / DVD-RAM drive all at once on the next restart.
    It should then function.
