Can't Read NTFS External HDD after Quick Tip Execution

I've recently shifted from Windows to OS X - and I wanted to use my 1TB Seagate External to transfer data from my old laptop to my Macbook Pro. I was aware that OS X cannot write to an NTFS drive and hence I executed the Quick Tip from this article to try and by-pass this:
http://computers.tutsplus.com/tutorials/quick-tip-how-to-write-to-ntfs-drives-in -os-x-mavericks--cms-21434
It worked like a charm for me a grand total of ONE TIMES. The next morning when I tried to re-connect my external, my Macbook can't seem to read the HDD anymore. Is there a way to fix this? If I go back to the Terminal and undo my previous changes, will that fix my problem or will that create more issues?
Please help - I can seem to access the External when i plug it to my old laptop, so thankfully it isn't corrupt or broken, but I want to be able to use it on my Mac too!

Do you think if I just upgraded to Yosemite this would solve itself?
I rather doubt it. That little tutorial has been posted here a number of times, too. I wouldn't recommend anyone using it. Especially not on a drive that has no backup of its contents.
You're in kind of a tight spot at the moment, being unable to copy everything off to the Windows laptop. Though technically, nothing on the external drive changed. The command you entered in Terminal changed OS X's behavior.
What I would do is this:
1) If the external drive is connected to the Mac and is on, dismount the drive and turn it off.
2) Use the Terminal command again to invoke the simple text editor nano and edit the file stab to remove the line you added. Basically, what you said above to undo the changes you made. Save the file and exit nano and then Terminal.
3) Restart the Mac.
When the desktop is back up, turn on the external drive. It should appear on the desktop in normal read only mode. If you prefer to leave the external drive as NTFS, use a commercial package to enable read/write access in OS X. It's only $20 for Paragon's NTFS software.

  • Can OS9 read GUID external HDD?

    Hi all,
I'm helping my brother "decommission" a defunct G4 that was running OS9/Jaguar.   I have removed the internal HDD and am about to transfer the files onto an external HDD and wondered about the partition scheme it requires.
can a OS9 machine (the old Ti-Powerbook) read an external HDD (USB, no FW) that is partitioned using GUID, or should it be Apple partition?  He doesn't intend to boot off the hard drive, just run some applications that resides on it that runs only on OS9.
Also should I spend the exta $$ to get FW on the HDD enclosures?  the HDD will not be a boot drive.

It needs to be an APM drive to be readable by Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier, unless used as a network share.

My Mac won't mount my external HDD after installing Lion - What can I do?
HDD: Verbatim 3.5'' External HDD  eSATA & USB 2.0 #48802
I can not find it in Disc Utilities - so I can not repair it.
I also haven't found any Driver for the HDD to do an update.
My Mac is running on the most recent updates of OS Lion.
The HDD worked before. It contains my former Time-Mashine Backups. I would like to use this drive again. It isn't very old yet.
It would be much appreciated if anyone could help.
    Cheers,
    Yves

OK, try restarting in Safe Mode and if that doesn't work try resetting the SMC and PRAM.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Why i can't find the external HDD plugged to airport extreme. i already format it with mac OS extended (journaled)

Why i can't find the external HDD plugged to airport extreme. i already format it with mac OS extended (journaled).
Does only certain branch of HDD can be connected to aireport extreme?
I collect some information and i knew i have to partiion the HDD into Mac OS extended (journaled),
and i did so. Still the usb HDD cannot be found.
The other question is, can i partition the HDD into two sections, one of it is Mac OS extended(journaled) while the other is Fat32?
I want to share Fat32 section with another PC with windows system.
Thanks a lot if you have any suggestions.

I had tried to set up the connection via usinb a powered usb hub as the bridge between external HDD and the airport extreme. i still cannot found the HDD in the "airport utilities".
    This is my setting.
    1. Set airport extreme  as "sharing-single-ip" mode. The wireless network functions correctly.
    2. Connect external HDD to MBA. Partition it into single-partition with Mac OS extended (journaled).
    3. The HDD can be found if i plugged it directly to my MBA.
    4. Connect a powered usb hub to airport extreme.
    5. Connect external HDD to the powered usb hub.
    6. Open airport utilities.
         a. Select "airport extreme" in the sidebar.
         b. Change the "Disks" sheet.
    7. Cannot find an external Disk
    Is there any problem here?
Please help me. Thanks a lot!!

  • MBP Not Reading HSF+ External HDD/Bootcamp Win7 Is ?!?!

Hi - this is a strange one to me. After creating separate partitions (NTFS/FAT32/HFS) for my LaCie Ext-HDD, I been able to shuffle data between my Mac and PC computers (teach in a lab). However, one day - for no specific reason - all drives except FAT32 would not read. But what's more odd is that the HFS is readable only in Win7. What's more strange is that the NTFS drive is not, and is only readable in OS X (via some 3rd party software).
Has anyone experienced an HFS HDD that's not readable in OS X (Snow Leopard)?
Any advice on how to retrieve my data in OS X (the BC-Win7 is not large enough to support the data transfer) ?
    Thanks so much in advance!
    ACV

I have a similar problem... tried to install winXP on an external HDD (read in FAQ after there you are not suppose to ><)
anyway after I installed XP my mac cant find any bootable partitions (had OSX 10.6.3 and Win7 working perfectly)
the wierd thing is when I boot off the intallation CD I can only see the Win7 partition and it says its empty.. even after I removed the HDD from my mac and hooked it up as an external HDD to my mac desktop the Win7 partition came up empty aswell but the mac partition was nowhere to be found...
I really need my data back from my Mac partition I dont really care about what was on the Win7... please someone tell me there is a way!!

  • Can't write to External HDD connected to AEBS

+This is a repost from the SL Discussion...hopefully someone here can help...+
I am logged in under my account, which is the Administrator Account. I am unable to write to Seagate 1 TB external HDD connected to AEBS base station.
Under "Get Info"->Sharing and Permissions it reads "You have custom Access" and then shows just one account, "everyone" and this is a "Read Only" account. The format of the External Drive is shown as "Appleshare" (actual drive is formatted as NTFS so my Dell PC can read/write, which is functioning perfectly).
I tried to change the "everyone" account to Read and Write but Mac 10.6.3 won't let me because "I don't have the necessary permissions".
So then I tried to add another account (clicking the "+" sign) but it again rejects me because the account "isn't a valid name" although I am using my account name.
I was able to read/write to this drive under Leopard but lost that function when I upgraded to 10.6.3. I can read the files on the drive and copy them to my iMac but I can't copy back to the drive. Is this a Finder problem?
How can I get the permissions changed on this external drive so I can read/write from my Admin account?

Okay, it is formatted as FAT32.
I checked under Airport Utility and there are (2) accounts that have permitted access, Dad (Read/Write) and Mom (Read Only). The drive is not corrupted as I can read/write from the Dell PC without any issue and I can "Read" from my iMac.
When I right click on the drive, "Get Info" and then check "Sharing/Permissions", there is only one account shown "everyone" (all small letters) with "Read" access. This account does not show up under "Airport Utility" so it is an account that Finder assigned.
My other two accounts, that are correctly shown under Airport Utility, are not shown in Finder. It seems like this is a Finder Problem and Finder (under Snow Leopard) won't let me access the drive.
So how can I change the Permissions in Finder? Even if Finder lets me add another account that can read/write, I'll be happy. But it won't let me add any accounts, it simply says "Invalid Account Name".
I'll try the direct hookup to the iMac as a last resort but this drive has all of my photos backed up on it so I don't want to mess around too much with it. I have photos on other drives as well but it is a big pain to reload from the other drives...it is around 300 Gb of photos.

  • Can't recognize my external HDD anymore

    Hello everyone!
The problem started when my usb cord connected to the HDD slipped out of the computer without me first unmounting it safely. Right after I reconnected the USB cable and since then the computer (no other computer as well) can find the external hard drive. After I probably read 100 different forums, here is a list of what I tried to fix the problem:
Switching to a new USB cord
Tried all the USB connectors on the computer
    Tested on another Mac
    Tested on another PC
Used the computer in Safe Boot
    Reset SMC
    Reset PRAM
Used the Disk Warrior - The program can't find the disk
Used Data Rescue 3 - program can't find the disk
Used Disk Utility - Here there is almost never a disk in the list. But approx. once an hour (if I let the disk be in the USB connector) my hard drive starts to flash and then it pops up in disk utility every third time or so. When I try to repair disk or eject disc the program start working but then freezes. When I then restart the disk utility my external disk isn't left in the list. A couple of times I've tried to find the disk with Disk Warrior when it has been seen in disk utility but the program freezes too when starting up.
Might add that the hard drive responds immediately when I plug it in, there is no noise and it works smoothly. I have never had a problem with any other USB devices connected to my computer and not even now since my external hard drive started to become problematic! So I don't think the problem is with the computer but who knows? Trying to find som great solutions from anybody.
What can I do? What are my options to access my important material on my hard drive?
I'm using OSX 10.6.7 and the external HDD is a Wester Digiral Passport SE.
    Any help is very appreciated!!!

Look at the settings in Finder Preferences. Showing external drives may not be the default setting.

  • Can no longer find External HDD

Ok so, last night I had a rough time with my MacBook Pro (startup wasn't working correctly) so I took it down to my local Apple Store today, where they formatted the entire hard drive. Luckily, I've been using my 500gb WD external hard drive to back up everything! So now I'm home, and I plug in my external HDD, and it doesn't come up on my desktop nor in finder. I tried to use Migration Assistant, but it can't find it, and Disk Utility doesn't see it either.
I know the USB ports still work, because I can plug in my mouse just fine. So what happened? Why doesn't my MacBook Pro recognize it anymore?
p.s. The HDD lights up and you can hear it spinning just fine, just like before. This problem has never happened to me before.

Sorry I wasn't clear, but when I pull up Disk Utility, my portable HDD does not appear.
I tested it by plugging it into my family's desktop (a Windows machine) and it pulled it up just fine. This means there's something wrong with my Mac...what can it be?

  • Can TC power an external HDD?

I'm buying a new external hard drive, and would like to buy one that's powered via the USB connection, not one with its own AC power adapter.
    a) Is the Time Capsule able to power an external HDD through the USB port?
    b) If yes, are there any limitations to how big a size or how fast (rpm) the disc can be before it's too much for the TC to handle?
    Thanks.

Yes. Apple's technical specs for the Time Capsule don't mention current capacity of the USB port, but I have an external drive connected to my Time Capsule. On a PowerBook G4 that same drive required a "Y" USB cable to provide the drive enough power.
    b) If yes, are there any limitations to how big a size or how fast (rpm) the disc can be before it's too much for the TC to handle?
I wouldn't expect size or speed to be a problem.

  • Can't see my External HDD via Airport Extreme & powered hub

I have Windows 7 laptop and it just can't seem to detect my HDD via the Airport Extreme wired through a powered hub. If I connect HDD directly to my laptop it can see the files.
First I had problems with seeing my printer and found out that I had to install Bonjour and that worked. Is there some kind of program to make my HDD accessible?

of course there is an easy way, however, it entails erasing all data on the drive. do you have access to a spare, "temporary", drive ?
