CAN'T READ Verbatim Dvd-r 8.5gb 4 Speed Advazo Dual Layer 5pk

Just cut together a video on FCP - and using DVD studio pro I'm ready to burn it. It's 5.1GB and so had to make it a dual layer film. I've just bought Verbatim Dvd-r 8.5gb 4 Speed Advazo Dual Layer 5pk to burn BUT it wont read it. Is this a superdrive issue or have I bought the wrong blank dvd's?
I've got a Powerbook G4 15" Aluminum with:
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-816:
Firmware Revision: DXJ3
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO

If you want to make dual layer DVDs with you present computer, I think you need an external Firewire dual layer DVD drive and an app that handles dual layers like Toast. I think the latest version of iDVD handles dual layer external drives; I do not know about DVD Studio Pro.
You can also replace your current internal drive with a dual layer drive.

Purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

Yes, there are programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, DVD Creator, Wondershare, and others.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie.

    Hi Yolanda,
the error message is inside a popup: (French trnaslation) "Windows media Player encountered an error and will close." I have the choice beetween "CLOSE" and "HELP ON THE WEB".
Of course the "help" is totally useless....
I don't see any troublshooter related to "media player". The only troubleshooter where I can choose Media player is for the "compatibility mode", so it's not helpful. On the "audio and devices" troubleshooter I see "read
a DVD with Windows Media Player", but that's not my case.
I've already done the last step. I copy the MP3 from my second computer to the "problematic" one, and I can't read my file. But, on the second computer, i can read this MP3 so the issue is ONLY when I try to read this file with my Windows session.
(in the same computer, with the administrator session, I can read all the files).
To put it in a nutshell:
on computer A logged as CEDRIC i can not read the mp3 called SUPERSONG (it's an example lol)
on computer A logged as administrator, I can read the SUPERSONG
on computer B logged as CEDRIC (other local account but same name) I can read the SUPERSONG mp3 that is present in the music Library (that is not the same file, but it's a file with the same name, and of crouse this is the same song). (all my MP3 are copied
from computer A to computer B in case of failure on one of the computers)
on computer A logged as CEDRIC, if I do a
\\computerB\c$\...\SUPERSONG I can not read it.
I know this is complicated to explain, but if I ask to the Microsoft community that is because I don't know what to do ;) ;) ;)

  • How can I burn a 5GB iso to a dual layer DVD (I get a size error..)

I converted a 5GB *.mkv to iso for dual layer dvd with devede. When I try to burn the iso with growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/sr0 /home/hk/movie/movie.iso, I get: /movie.iso is larger than 4GiB-1.
-allow-limited-size was not specified. There is no way do represent this file size. Aborting.
    :-( write failed: Input/output error
What could I do? Thank you

Chances are the ISO is not dvd compliant & does not contain layer change info:

    EDIT: Alternative
For the lazy you can install ImgBurn into a Windows NT4 bottle/prefix
    then install the latest ASPI.dll
issue a wineboot for the bottle/prefix
then build the dvd in ImgBurn BUT you will need to use dvdauthor to create the correct dvd folder structure & files

  • Can't read a DVD-RW I just burned successfully

My search on this forum didn't get me the answer - Hope I didn't miss it...
My knowledge in this area is zero having come from a beige G3 with little need to burn even a CD.
A friend gave me a DVD-RW onto which he had burnt a short TV clip recorded directly from his standalone DVD recorder/player. (i.e. not done on a computer).
It plays on my standalone DVD player connected to our TV, but when I shove it into this core duo iMac, "DVD Player" launches but then tells me the disc is "unsupported".
I then tried using my remote control and FrontRow to select this disc, but it claims "The disc's copy protection cannot be verified."
I had previous success transferring a TV program I had recorded on a VHS tape into my EyeTV and from there transferring it to Toast and burning a DVD-R which seemed to work everywhere.
So I then erased my friend's DVD-RW (with his permission) using Disc Utlity and then transferred a TV show from EyeTV to Toast and burned it to this DVD-RW disc (which was later reported as successful).
The finished disc plays on my standalone DVD player but still won't play on this iMac. Again "DVD Player" reports it as "unsupported" while FrontRow hints at a copy protection issue (which I don't believe to be the case here, or is it?)
I would appreciate it if someone could give me a quick and painless education. Class is in session...

Here are some things you might want to read about DVD.
Let me see if I can shed some light on this issue, for you.
Maybe some others as well can.
There are several Applications that are standard programs that come with OSX.
Of these, several have the ability to burn a project.
    iTunes....iMovie.....Disk Utility.
Each of the above mentioned applications were developed for a specific purpose. However, they are capable of doing more than the original developers intended.
The problem in my eyes is the lack of information for a new user to Mac.
In what one would consider the perfect world, you simply choose a project, drag it in to one or more of the applications mentioned above and simply click burn and you are finished.
This is not always the case.
Often users are left with the issue of no clear cut direction on how to use these different burning softwares, and the ability to have a clear cut step by step user interface.
All of the furnished OSX burning software is in fact usable and works well.
The problem is HOW TO USE THEM.
The more experienced users find this either to be a non issue or will take the time to work with these different applications until they figure out how to use them.
There are of course different Advertisements and FAQ's that cover these to some degree that leave users more confused than when they started.
One of the major issues that accompany this problem is this.
Not all Burners that Apple uses in there machines are the same.
Not all Burners will accept all the different Media's that are available on the market.
Thus leaving many users confused. Not having a clear cut understanding of what the difference is between these different Media's and there use.
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd.htm
The above link offers an overview of this subject.
Apple has found itself in a delima with the Motion Picture Industry, as well as The Music Industry over the issue of offering there users with the capability of copying Copyrighted material. Thus leaving them open for Law Suits.
There was an in-depth article in one of the recent issues of Macworld Magazine, that went in-depth covering this issue.
It is almost impossible to cover all aspects of this issue on these forums.
There are of course different softwares available that make the burning experience much easier and user friendly.
Roxio is one of the industry leaders in the development of Mac compatible Burning Software. They offer 2 of the industry leaders in this area.
    Toast-7 and Popcorn.
This solves only one portion of the problem. Both of these software offering give the user the ability to copy about anything.
However, there is so much controversy over the issue of Movie and Music copying, the manufactures of the Computers, and the Burners try to limit the users ability to copy these, and thus be clear of any Legal Issue.
Here again rises the problem of computer users being mad because the industry has placed limitations on there ability to use there product in a fast easy to use method.
Again there are work around to all of these issues.
The problem then becomes who out there is willing to tell us what is the easiest most trouble free method of using these computers, burners, software, and media.
The burner manufactures offer there burners.
To get them to work to there full potential the users then must search out the 3rd party Firmware updates that will enable them to work properly. This is not an issue with all burners but quite a few.
Most readers on these forums have read about the MEDIA compatibility and poor quality issues these are covered in a prior link.
To sum this up, the resources are available to do just about anything one wants to do in the copy area.
Not every copy problem is the same because of all the different elements that come into the equation, Burner, Media, Software, Firmware.
So if a user has a problem and needs the information and the resources to copy there projects whatever they may be.
Be through, give as much information as you can.
Keep it simple, No need for the use of exotic terms that most people don't understand anyway.
In-depth. Tell all aspects of the issue and what you have what you are using and what you want to accomplish.
If there is an answer out there.
    Someone will Chime in.
The users on these forums for the most part are more than willing to share in there knowledge, free of charge.
    One last thing,
When a user gives you an answer for you problem, for the most part they believe it to be a fact. Sometimes this isn't the case, we have all been guilty of, this is not done with malicious intent. It is done trying to help.
I personally have been misinformed, or tried a fix, that will work in one instance but not another. So tell all you can about your problem.

This will at least get you started.

  • My macbook pro can't read a dvd-r double layer

    Hi everyone!
I have a Macbook Pro 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 15 inches (mid-2009, model identifier MacBookPro5,3) with Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3. I can't read a commercial DVD DL-R (as indicated on the DVD). The DVD player doesn't mount the DVD and reject it after about a minute. All my other DVDs play fine on my computer and the problematic DVD plays on the more recent (about a year old) MacBook Pro of my wife. When looking at the properties of the DVD player via System Information, it says it should be able to play the DVD.
Any idea what the problem/solution could be? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi m,
SuperDrives are notoriously picky eaters. It may just be that brand or even that one disc won't play in that particular drive, or, it may be the drive needs cleaning.
You could purchase a CD/DVD drive cleaning kit, or you can try with materials you may already have on hand. Use a credit card, or something similar, and wrap it with an LCD cleaning cloth type product (basically a thin micro-fiber type cloth). Gently slide the "cleaner" in and out a few times in the left side of the optical drive opening. Make sure you can hold onto the cloth so it doesn't get stuck inside the drive. This cleans the lens, which may be all you need.

  • Can't read a DVD-R

I have a G4 eMac. I burned a DVD-R on this machine, putting about 2.2 GB of photo files on it plus a few MS Word and Acrobat files.
After I burned it, I put it back into the machine. It stayed in the drive for about 3 or 4 seconds and then it popped out.
I did the same thing with a second DVD-R (burning it on my eMac first, then taking it out and putting it back in) with the same result.
I then put both DVD-R's into my Windows laptop, which read them just fine.
And, my eMac will read other DVD's without any problem.
As info, the CD/DVD drive info is as follows:
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D:
    Manufacturer: PIONEER
    Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D

    Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: No

  • Can I read mini DVD-R?

Hello to all. I have a little question:
My iMac (iMac 6.1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 Ghz) with PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K0
can read mididisc dvd-r 1.4 GB?
    Thanks,
    Guillermo.

    Hello,
Do not use 8cm 'mini' or mis-shapen discs in the slot-loading optical drive in an iMac.
You should use an external tray-loading drive or look to source the content elsewhere (i.e. download).
BTW you have an Intel iMac, not an iMac G5.

  • Can't read burned DVDs

PowerMac G4 MDD with Philips CDD5101
Any DVDs that I burn on my PowerBook G4 (Matshita DVD-R UJ-846) can't be read by my PowerMac G4.
Burned CDs and pressed CDs and DVDs work just fine, but no burned DVDs. So it isn't a cleaning problem
Those same burned DVDs work fine on the PowerBook, so it isn't a burning problem.
It also shouldn't be a media problem as this has consistently happened with my previous batch of Maxell DVD+R discs, and now my current batch of FujiFilm DVD-R discs.
Running OS X 10.4.9 with all updates on both machines.
Current discs were burned on the PowerBook with Roxio Toast Titanium 8.01 and Apple's DiscUtility (disc image). Neither disc worked.
    Thanks for your help!

I am having the same problem on my G5. And, it just started happening. I can read the DVD's I made in any other drive but my G5. In fact, any DVD I made at work can't be read either.

  • Can't read iLife DVD

My MacMini has been having repeated CD / DVD read & write problems. Repeated tries at lower write speeds seems to solve the CD write problems, and commercial DVD reads seem to work most of the time.
However, I bought iLife '06, and have been unable to read the install DVD. I called Apple within the warranty period, and got them to send a new iLfe '06 DVD - but that doesn't work earlier. I've deleted the finder preferences file, based on another post, but iLife DVD read still doesn't work after reboot.
    Any other ideas?
    Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1.42GHz PowerPC G4 w/ Superdrive

It's not an ideal answer, but do you have access to another Mac, that can read the disc? you could use it to make a image file of the disc. Provided you have a way to transfer the very larger file (several GB), you could then mount it on your errant mini and install. Another option would be if the other Mac has a dual-layer DVD burner, you could burn a copy that your mini may be able to read. I had a similar problem with the retail Tiger DVD and my PowerBook. I made an image of it on my mini, and then burned it to a dual-layer DVD (using an external DVD burner).

  • I did disk utility, and verify disk and it asks to repair the disk using dvd installer...but when i insert the dvd- restart- hold c, it keep ejecting and can't read the dvd....i tried with my friends dvd too, but still fail...mac osx v10.6.7

    someone pls help me

Well there is Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck witch includes step by step instructions to run disk repair without the install disk.
But before doing that, it's a good idea to backup. You may want to troubleshooting your superdrive / disk before hand. if I disk repair fails you may need the disk working to re-install the OS.
Dose the computer read any DVDs? if no, you may want to use Troubleshooting the slot load optical disc drive.

  • Can't read old DVD-RAMs

I'm using OS 10.4.11. I have some old DVD-RAM discs with old files on them that I would like to open on my G4 iBook laptop. I also purchased an external DVD-RAM drive that plugs into the USB port on my laptop. It used to read old discs just fine about a year ago, but now when I try I get a message that says the disc I have inserted is "unreadable." Also, I no longer get the icon of the external disc drive that used to appear on my desktop.
I suspect that I've upgraded my system software to the point that this old DVD-RAM stuff no longer works. Does anyone know a way I can access these old discs on my present system?
    Thanks for any ideas.

  • Can't read any DVD to convert to MPEG4

I have quicktime pro and I want to use it to convert DVD's I have to MPEG4 for use on my IPOD Video.
Every time I tried to open a file from the dvd it says "it is not a movie file".
I Have a normal DVD witch consists of VIDEO_TS map and a AUDIO_TS map.
I thought is was possile to use Quick Time Pro to convert these dvd's.
Can anyone tell wat I do wrong ?

QT by itself will not read mpeg2 files, which are mostly what is found on DVD. Apple does sell a mpeg2playbackcomponent for $20 but it has a number of limitations, including that it will not read from transport streams and will not read encrypted Movie DVDs. Take a look at the FAQ before spending any money on it.
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/faq.html
Another limitation is that it will not export sound from mpeg1 or mpeg2 files. This freeware (Mac and Windows version are available) can overcome that limit for mpeg-1 or (if you buy the mpeg2 component) from mpeg2 Mpeg StreamClip

  • Count me in. iMac can't read burned DVD-Rs. Fixes?

I've browsed through the posts here and see quite a few people with the same (or a similar) issue. My computer no longer "sees" burned DVD-Rs. It spins and spins, then (without any sort of error message) spits it out. It recognizes commercial DVDs just fine. I've done an archive and install. All of my software is up to date (I'm currently running 10.4.6). I'm just exploring every possibility before packing this thing up and taking it over to the apple store.
I know I'm just part of an enormous chorus here... just thought I'd ask.

    By the way, I've got a Pioneer DVD-Rw DVR-106D.
