Can't really delete the ''spaces" on a hard disk or pen drive ?

hi, i've faced this problem for a long time. that whatever things i've copy into a hard disk or pendrive, and used it on window or what, and when i wanted to remove the stuff inside, the "spaces" just seems to be still there. which means i've already deleted the file, but the storage dint even free out any space? i wonder why ? sometimes i dint even communicate my pendrive with other laptop, and yet this happened. it goes the same to my friend's mac. i wonder is this normal ?

When you delete data from an external drive, you must empty trash on the MBP before disconnecting the external drive from the MBP.

  • Why can't I get the full amount of hard disk space when I reformat?

I have a 750 GB external Western Digital. I reformatted it using extended journaled setting. When it's all ready to go why do I only get 700 GB available as free space and not the full 750 GB? What is occupying the remaining 50 GB? I guess I could understand a gig or two that I couldn't use, but 50 GB, that's 15% of the disk!!!!
    Thank you

    Gets asked frequently....
    500GB = 465GB too. Or 1000GB = 933GB.
Then, you will find the last inner tracks are drastically slower than the outer 1/3, too. So chop some off for performance.
699GB is 'normal.' The new WD 640GB Caviar = 599GB, great drive and seems slightly faster than the 750GB due to higher density recording.
You can build your own and choose the drive and case that meets your needs, and avoid the vendor 'tax' or WD "features" and go with a Oxford based FW/USB/eSATA cases.

My LR previews data file has just gone over 50GB, how can I shrink it as I really need the space on my laptop?

Or if you don't want to delete all of it, you can just discard 1:1 previews using Library->Previews menu - that may or may not buy you the space you need.
If you do opt for deleting the whole thing, here is an idea to keep it from going back to 50G: change the size/quality of standard previews and/or the policy for auto-removing 1:1 previews (Lr Preferences -> Catalog Settings -> File Handling).

To add to Niel's comment bear in mind that if you have a backup copy on an external HD and later delete the orignals on your Mac HD you will then only have one copy - so no backup.
If the pictures are precious you should have at least two copies, and ideally another copy kept off site,

  • How to REALLY delete the cropped audio...?

I'm editing a movie a friend and I made with our kids. The boys (aged 6 & 7) played out various monster/robot encounters with their toys, which I've edited into a vague storyline, while my friend's daughter (age 4) just showed me/the camera her unicorn and playschool toys, named them all, and put her dolls down for a nap.
In putting all this together, there was a horrible accident. While editing the last segment (the dolls) something funny happened to the audio. In playback, the video was fine but the sound for the whole movie was veeeerrrrry sllooooooowwwww. I determined that I had too many audio clips (extracted dialog, sound effects, music) for the program to bear. So I've been doing a drastic reconstruction of the video, realizing that I should save it in progress as a DV file, and then bring that back into iMovie to add more layers, that way simplifying the number of clips the program has to track.
Now, at long last we get to the question of this post: Is there a way to really delete the bits of audio I clip away?
The reason I ask is this: In the dolls sequence, I've taken the eight minutes of footage and chopped it all down to descrete short clips of her saying things and doing things, making about a three minute montage of short clips ("This is DeeDee", "This is a baby unicorn", "I like chocolate milk", etc.). Much more effective on screen with the long pauses gone and my prompting eliminated. But to avoid stray sounds in other video clips, I have the sound for the video track off. So to get her comments, all of those clips have their sounds extracted.
Each extracted sound contains the whole of the audio from that clip. Since I was shooting continuously with her (in two parts, one about three minutes long, one about five) each little four second clip has the whole audio from the original clip. This is what bogged down the project last time....
I'd rather finish the reconstruction, than go back to the camera tape and start the whole fershlugginer thing over again.
Is there a way to chop down the audio clips to just the bits I need in each case?
If not, I'd suggest the iMagineers at Apple hit the drawing boards again and add such an option to future releases. Just put it under the Advanced pull-down, so I know where to find it... : ) : P
    Thanks for reading,

Now, at long last we get to the question of this post: Is there a way to really delete the bits of audio I clip away?
Yes, that can be done. The trick is to select the VIDEO clips above the audio you want to keep, then export the AUDIO of those clips. Then re-import the exported audio to replace the original audio.
Set the Timeline to timeline mode, not clips mode.
    1. If you wish, split the starting and ending video clip(s) above the audio to match the length of the audio clip.
Select all the video clips in Timeline that reside over the audio.
    2. Choose File > Export...
    3. Turn ON the checkbox "Share selected clips only".
    4. Choose "Expert Settings" from the Compress Movie For popUp menu.
    5. Click Share
    6. In the export dialog window that opens, choose "Sound to AIFF" from the top popUp menu. (That causes iMovie to export only the audio, not the video.)
    7. Choose "44.1 kHz 16-bit Stereo" from the bottom popUp menu.
    8. Assign the export file name, then Save.
Import the exported AIFF file back into the project and replace the audio that was there.
Repeat for each section of audio you want to remove.
Note, however, that EVERY audio clip you replace must be removed from the project to recover ANY of the disk space its source file consumes. No audio/video file is removed when you empty the iMovie trash unless ALL the clips it supports have been discarded.
If the project is essentially complete, you can simplify this by exporting ALL the audio this way, then re-import it as a single AIFF file back into the project and discard all your previous audio.
Another way is to export the entire project to tape and re-import it to a new project. Only the stuff you actually use will be retained.

  • I keep getting an error stating that my disk is full in syslog. The file is empty and I want to stop it from logging data. Can I just delete the file?

Can I just delete the syslog file?

    Hello,
Yes, you can delete the file. A new file in Syslog directory is started each time that LabVIEW and the Tag Engine is started. You can either manually delete old files or write a simple VI to automatically delete files that are older than a certain number of days.
As an alternative, you can save these files into another folder, just to free up syslog directory space, and still have these history files for later use.

  • Delete the space between multiple clips, at once, on the timeline?

Is there a way to delete the space between multiple clips on the timeline with one click?
I trim clips on the timeline, so I can have a couple hundred clips with space between on the timeline.  Is there a way to delete all the spaces between the clips at once?
Right now I have to ripple delete the space between each clip, big hassle and a lot of key strokes. Is there a better faster way to trim clips in general?  Or delete the spaces on the timeline?

I have not used the source monitor much. Can I use the sourse monitor to make a lot of cuts "clips" out of one big clip?  Say I want to take the highlights out of a long wedding ceremony?  Or do I need to do this one the timeline.  Edit clips on the timeline is very intuitive to me and I can do it fast, except for all the spaces betweent the clips.
Absolutely ( and I wouldnt do it any other way because it is designed for ease and speed)
    Try it:
1.Target a Video and Audio track in the timeline
    2. Place the long source file in the Source monitor.
    3. Locate the  first highlight and Set In and Out Points  ( KBD Shortcut "I' and "O")
4.Then Insert it to the timeline ( KBD "," )
Note: there are a number of ways of sending the selection to the timeline (eg.Insert / Overlay buttons, drag it to the Program Monitor, drag direct to the timeline). You can also take video only, audio only, both. Darg options have modifier keys for insert / overlay ripple-ing
Back to the source monitor (step 2)  and mark next highlight selection....repeat steps...etc.....
Ensure your CTI (playhead) is always at the end of the last clip in the timeline.  KBD short cut "End" and you will have no gaps to deal with.

  • When i open an mp3 file from a source other than apple, does itunes create it's own file and can I then delete the original mp3?

when I open a music file from a source other than apple, does itunes create it's own file and can I then delete the original mp3?

If you use iTunes' default settings then when you add a file to iTunes it places a copy of the file in the iTunes media folder and it leaves the original in place.  The exception is when you drag it to the Automatically Add To iTunes folder.
It does not convert the file.  You can delete the original if you wish.

Since you can't delete Apple IDs and having multiple Apple IDs can cause confusion, what you may want to do is rename your existing Apple ID to the new email (desired Apple ID).  That would in effect do what you want, get rid of the old and give you the new.

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.

-so do not uninstall the older CC programs if you use plugins in your programs until you are sure you have plugins that work in CC2014

If I delete email on my iPhone4S can it also delete the email on my iPad2 through iCloud sync?

If you are using an IMAP mail account like iCloud, then all your devices will be synced, so deleting a mail on one device will delete it from all.
