Can't reboot after 10.4.11 software update

I have downloaded the 10.4.11 update. Mac wont reboot - I get the grey apple screen with the rotating wheel.
I have tried rebooting with disc - but dont have enough space to Archive and Install
I have also tried "first Aid" in Disk Utilities - but no problems identified.
I have tried to boot un Safe Mode - but no joy
What next? Any ideas?

I have got an external hard drive (USB not Firewire).
Sadly, you cannot boot your PB into OSX from USB, only FW, so that idea is out.
I can try to delete from Terminal - how do you do this...
It can be dangerous using the Terminal, typing is of utmost importance, and SPACES between things can be the difference between wiping everything or just one thing.
If you want to try Terminal, let's try this once you have it open...
cd Users
then enter, that "changes the Directory, then we can list what is there with...
ls
then enter.
Tere is also an mv, (move command), should you wish to try to copy it to the USB drive.

I FINALLY got it to work on BOTH iPhone 4 and iPpad 3. Here is what I had to do:
Had to DELETE all e-mail accounts including icloud.
Did a hard reset (hold down button on top right corner and round button on bottom center)
Then once it came back on, the iPhone had ALL of the accounts still on it and it was receivng e-mail.
The iPad receive e-mail until I did the steps above 5 times. Plus, I had to add back all of the e-mail accounts vs. on the iPhone 4 they were there when my phone came on.
Now I am receiving e-mail on both devices normally.
No clue why this happened, but Apple needs to find a fix ASAP.

Lost Playlists after 10.6.5 Software Update

After 10.6.5 Software Update all my Playlists have disappeared. On opening iTunes after Update I was also prompted to choose a Library. I chose my usual one on an external Firewire drive... but no Playlists. There were loads and I'm mightily annoyed.
I've tried Time Machine but it hasn't backed up my external drive.
... help? ... solution?

I've seen Apple Launching Mac OSX 10.6.5 and iTunes 10.1 Today but an update to iTunes is not available yet.
My 'old' iTunes Libraries comprised over 176 GB of music, movies, app, podcasts etc. All the files are still on the drive, but I have to Rebuild the Libraries and Playlists. I haven't figured out any other way than Create a New Library then importing to the new Library. This make a copy of the originals in a new Media folder, so I've had to delete files on another drive then copy the original Library there so I can Import. It will take ages.
I'll be a tad upset for myself if the iTunes update fixes this after I've done so much, but please for others.

As Retired Engineer indicated, you will need to install Snow Leopard first. After you install Snow Leopard, you need to go into Software Update and perform the updates. 10.6.6 will install the App Store. You should continue to update to 10.6.8 before purchasing and installing Lion from the App Store.
Be sure your machine meets the minimum requirements. Basically, any Mac with a Core 2 Duo processor or later and at least 2GB of RAM (but 4 is highly recommended). If you have a first generation MacBook Pro with a Core Duo, you will not be able to upgrade to Lion.

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.
