Can't Reconnect Media - Converting FCP 4.5 to 7. version

Hello All
I was hoping someone might have an idea to help me.
I am converting all my FCP projects from FCP4.5 to FCP7.0
and I have a couple of files that I can't re connect too ??
The files show up as "off line"
I will manually search for them, and find them ( the files is where is is supposed to be )
I ask FCP to CONNECT to the file and
I get an EMPTY warning box - empty expect for a ! and Cancel or Ok bubbles
FCP does not tell me what is wrong with the file...?
Sometimes FCP will say that there are not enough layers in the Photoshop file ??
It seems that each time I open the project... I get a different warning !
These files run fine in FCP 4.5 ?
There are the same number of layers ??
Is this s Photoshop thing ? or a FCP thing ??
I've never run into this before ?
Any Ideas how to fix this ???
Thanks

Well that was easy.....!?
I guess I was just trying to fix a problem that wasn't a problem !
Thanks David !

  • Can only Reconnect Media one file at a time

I posted this problem almost two months ago, and was told at the time that it was a bug in FCP 6.0 and 6.0.1, but was fixed in 6.0.2. Well, I finally upgraded to 6.0.2, and the problem remains. What is strange, is that after I upgraded, the first two bins of files reconnected correctly, but ever since then none of the others have (and I tried the third bin right after the second, no changes at all to the computer). So I'm having this problem with both my G5 dual 2 gig (OS 10.4.9) and my Intel Macbook Pro (OS 10.4.11). Any ideas? The problem:
I'm trying to relink media I have on an external firewire drive, but when I click Relink, FCP only relinks the first file in my list. The files are all there, in the same location, and have not had any name or reel changes - each one relinks fine individually, but I can't get FCP to link more than 1 file at a time.
Procedures: I select all the files from a certain reel that are listed as being offline, then File>Reconnect Media. All the files I've selected are listed in the top half of the window, with the first file underlined. I have Search Single Location checked. I select Locate (though same thing happens if I select Search and locate the file myself), Show: Video Files (tho same thing happens if I select All Files), I've checked Match Name and Reel Only (though again same thing happens if this is not checked), and I checked Reconnect All Files in Relative Path. FCP finds the first file, and I click "Choose" - and the first file is listed in the bottom part of the window, but only that file.
Everything else in FCP works fine.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

I am not having the same issue, and I am running 10.5.2 OS and 6.0.2 FCP. I also have FCP 6.0.2 on a computer running 10.4.11 and I have duplicate media on both systems, and bring a file back and forth and don't have to connect the media one at a time. This was a wide spread problem with 6.0.1, and the 6.0.2 update fixed that for most people. Why you are still having that problem is odd. Try trashing your FCP prefs with FCP RESCUE, and also try repairing your permissions with the Disk Utility.

  • Can't import Media into FCP X

In the last week or two when I try to import media into FCP X I end up with a very dark and locked import screen.  The only way I can recover is to force quit FCP X.  It doesn't always happen but it is getting more and more frequent.
I have not updated to Marverik and I'm running the latest version of FCP X on the same iMac I have used since installation.
Any suggestions beacuse it really is starting to beome very, very frustrating.
    Thanks

They system is hanging up, waiting on some command to finish, which is not able to.  So let's look at ways to fix this.  Becasue you never want to do an upgrade to fix problems.  Only upgrade a proerly working system.  Otherwise, you may just be hauling old problems into a new envoronment, and making things worse.  I've seen it a lot over the years.
First, verify that all of your drives have at least 15% of their total capacity as free space.  Not enough free space on any dirve can cause similar odd behaviors.
Second, you need to do some housee cleaning.  Start by downloading and running the free application "Preference Manager" from Digital Rebellion (dot com).  Use it to trash the FCPX preference files.  It is easy and safe to you.  None of your media or projects will be touched.  After that, run Disk Utility to "Repair" all of your drives (ignore "Verify", total waste of time).
If none of that helps, I'd recommand you download the free application "FCS Remover" from Digital Rebellion.  Use it to uninstall FCPX.  Some folks say to just move the app from the Applications folder to the Trash.  That leaves a bunch of other files hanging around that could be bad.  Use this app.  Once you've uninstalled FCPX, launch the App Store, go to the Purchases section, and FCPX will have an "Install" button.  Reinstall a fresh copy, see if that helps.

  • Can't Reconnect Media

I recently moved several capture files from my internal HD to an external one. I did "Reconnect Media" to update their location and they worked fine. Later, Final Cut started asking me to recconect the files manually as it loaded sequences. Eventually, it stopped working alltogether and the files cannot be reconnected. The reconnect window looks like this: http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/1055/picture13tv8.png
If I try to do locate and select the correct file, the connect button greys out and I'm forced to close the window.

I actually found a deeper problem... I actually got some files with the above error to connect, but some still refuse. The files that don't work somehow got corrupted and no longer appear to work. Opening them in Quicktime shows a file with no sound and no video.
This happened to me a while back ... same thing ... external drive containing all my files. One day FCP wouldn't reconnect and when i checked the files they came up as generic icons ... (in this case) no audio.
I had to go to my backup set and copy over the bad audio files. Everything worked fine after that. Needless to say, since that time i've maintained numerous backups of my media files in case this happens again.
I've always suspected directory damage caused the original problem.

  • What the.. where the.. Can't reconnect media files??? Source file info gone

This is bizarre. Many files went offline and now it won't tell me what is offline to reconnect.
    picture....
    http://www.redmoonlight.com/Picture3.png
Out of this 90 minute video, there are two 5 minute sequences that went offline. (I'm color grading every 5 minutes of the whole project using Color.) At some point without realizing it, it went offline and now the auto save doesn't have the file old enough for me to recover. (In the auto save vault, I just changed my # of copies per project from 40 to 100!)
My files are still on the drive (they were never moved!) but the source names are lost in Final Cut's sequence. A couple of files within the sequence with the offline file are still online. I don't know how 95% of the sequence went offline while the other 5% didn't.
I'm able to look at my original sequence (before exporting to Color) to compare I'll have to import the file one by one and then sync it up. HUGE TIME CONSUMING!
How did the media source name from my clips vanish? (I still love FCP.....)

    Thanks for the response.
I haven't moved any media files. Even if I did, I could easily reconnect the files.
The problem is the clips in the timeline and browser lost it's metadata on the name of it's source file. The clips has no idea what the original file's name was. In the picture, the list of offline files won't list. It has no idea what to look for.
I'm reconnecting them one by one. Here are the steps I have to take to get back on track:
1 - Go to last sequence (before send to Color seq.) and see what the clip looks like
2 - Find the media on the drive and get it's original name
3 - Go back to FCP and manually relink it.
This has happened before but only to a couple of clips which was quick to fix with this same method. I'm wondering how the clips lost it's info?

  • Reconnect Media from Soundtrack Pro

I exported a clip from FCP to Soundtrack Pro and cannot seem to Reconnect Media in FCP; when I go through the selection process to reconnect in FCP; I can pick it but the clip is still declared offline/missing. How do I get this fixed using FCP or Soundtrack Pro? Thanks.

I am trying to export a single track with audio from Soundtrack Pro. When I select File>Export, all of my export options are grayed out. I've tried highlighting the track and that didn't work. Any thoughts?
Is the menu item *File > Export* greyed out?
If so, it's probably because you have the audio open in the audio file editor. The only option from here is to Save As.
If you put the audio in a track of a multitrack project then File>Export should be available to you.

  • Color Can't Reconnect Rendered Media

I'm having some problems with Color 1.5.
Every time I close Color, it looses the rendered media. So if I make changes in one shot, I need to re-render all again. And if I render again, Color create a new render file.
Can I reconnect the rendered media?
PS: The render is not on default color render folder.

A feature of COLOR is automatic re-linking back in FCP (at least it works most of the time). If you need to re-grade a shot, simply re-open the COLOR project, re-work it, add it to the render queue, render that one shot only -- over-ride or deny any options to add or do anything else -- upon completion save and SHUT DOWN COLOR. Do NOT re-send anything. The new grade should appear in FCP upon re-opening that sequence. If it doesn't then you may need to do some manual re-linking, since COLOR is doing some things a little bit differently in this regard with vers 1.5. There is some debate about whether you can leave FCP running in the background or not, which may interfere with the new replacment. Its a "media in use" issue that FCP may attempt to protect the media from being over-written. In that case you will find multiple instances of the rendered clip building up in the grade folder.

  • Trouble reconnecting XDCam HD media to FCP

I am trying to automatically reconnect media that has been deleted from capture drive. Original media is on an XDCam disc,(imported using XDCam transfer plugin) but FCP will only let me reconnect it by manually locating the files. I have searched and others seem to have the same issue - has anyone come up w/ a simple solution.
    Thanks

Hey Shane, time to take the red pill I think mate
According to this thread, our OP is using XDCAM HD not XDCAM EX. He used Sony's XDCAM Transfer application (PDZK-P1) and did not use FCP's Log and Transfer interface together with Sony's XDCAM EX Log and Transfer plugin, (PDZK-LT1), as the the latter is only currently compatible with XDCAM EX media.
    Nick
FCP allows you to set a Capture Scratch directory but it does not limit you to only using that directory, the application is perfectly happy accessing your media from outside the defined Capture Scratch directory, indeed from wherever you may choose to store it, but obviously it is a good idea that you keep media in locations that are suitable for media storage and playback, and obviously its best you keep your media in an organized manner.
Sony's XDCAM Transfer app does not have access to FCP's preferences data and so cannot know which directory you have set as your Capture Scratch within FCP. So if you originally imported your footage using Sony's XDCAM Transfer app then it would not naturally have been in FCP's Capture Scratch directory anyway unless a) you set that directory as XDCAM Transfer's Import location, or b) you moved the imported media there after the fact. You can set up your preference for XDCAM Transfer's Import Location, in the XDCAM Transfer > Preferences >> Import tab ... by default it is set to your OS X user account's Movies folder.
Now that you are reimporting/have reimported the media (again using Sony's XDCAM Transfer app) you have the same option to set the Import location according to your FCP Capture Scratch directory, or to move the footage there after the fact ... either way, whether you do our you don't, FCP itself will not care as long as the media resides in a suitable media storage and playback location.
    Hope that helps
    Andy

  • I can't upload or import videos from my iphoto library, into final cut pro x.  When i click, IMPORT MEDIA in FCP, It lists iPhoto Library as GRAY, and will not let me access it.  I need the videos out of there.  I have tried every way I can think of.

    Like the title says...
I can't upload or import videos from my iphoto library, into final cut pro x.  When i click, IMPORT MEDIA in FCP, It lists 'iPhoto Library' as GRAY, and will not let me select it.  I need the videos out of there.  I have tried every way I can think of.
I have also tried from the iphoto side, to export the videos or share them to final cut.  I have had no luck.
I have tried to drag and drop indidual video clips from iphoto to fcp, and the programs simply do not respond to each other
I can see in the OLDER version of final cut pro x, where it has IMPORT FILES as an option, it was possible.  I see this on forums and youtube videos of the older versions.
However, the newer version that i have, does not have IMPORT 'FILES' as an option, it is simply all lumped together as IMPORT 'MEDIA'
    Thank You for the Help

at the end, you say "import preferences", which program are you describing?
So im safer using footage that is remotely being pulled from iphoto...
    vs
using footage that is imported into FCP from imovie?
Is there anything i can do in fcp to make this footage more reliable or safer or more stable as i pull remotely from iphoto?
All the footage, and all the libraries to all programs, or on a new pegasus 12tb raid 5 setup fyi.

  • Offline media, can't reconnect

I have a MacBook Pro 17", Mac OSX10.4.11, FCE 4.0.1, Lacie hard drive with firewire.
So close to being finished with this project! Hit the Fire Wire connections and it disconnected from the computer. Only a few items in the timeline were offline. Went through reconnect procedure. Automatically found the files. Hit "connect", but nothing happens to the files. Interesting, some (not all) of the offline clips in timeline are not offline when I go to their "bins", so I deleted and replaced these clips. But I can't reconnect the others. I did try rendering "all" but they are still offline (in timeline and in bins). Would forcing a rebuild using this method http://www.fcpbook.com/Video3.html help or not?
    Any suggestions?

Thanks for answering! I've read everything and nothing seems to help. I've pretty much given up!
I only changed the name of each subclip, as I made it. When I click on the individual offline clips, in my timeline and click to reconnect, the computer takes me directly to the location of the original stored clip, with it's original name. When I click on "choose", it lists it and I have a the choice to click on "connect", but when I do, nothing happens. Just stays offline.
I've worked on several other FCE projects and never had this problem. Feel like I've finally got the program somewhat understood. I have moved on and re-captured the media that was offline. I have pretty much decided, I'm too frustrated to continue using FCE, in the future.

  • ??? can BRIDGE helps PREMIERE reconnect media ???

    Dear,
I'm using Premiere CS3 (also have Bridge). I'm editing on AspectHD, and I'd like to have my co-editor working on his machine with DV version of the footage.
To have him have exactly what I've got so far, I went this way:
    - saved a copy of my project file
    - offlined all video clips it copy and kept audio files online (to avoid
having to reconnect them, by having my co-editor have them in the same
drive path and directory as I do so they reconnect automatically)
    - I imported CFHD project in a brand new DV project (so that my co-editor
can work in it and have proper specs)
So now I have an offline DV version of my project file with audio online, but when I try to reconnect medias with the DV clips, I need to reconnect them one by one; even more, I need to select them 2 times each before Premiere recognizes and accepts them as the proper media.
When I just Make Offline and Reconnect Medias in my project file and keep the HD media, I just need to select and tie one file in each folder that hold clips and Premiere does the rest, but now it won't do it for this particular project.
I talked with ADOBE tech support and the guy told me it was how Premiere works, but couldn't help me out as to if BRIDGE could help me help PREMIERE reconnect all my file in batch instead of spending 1-2 days doing so.
Anyone got any idea how to use Bridge in this case ?
    Thank you.

Nope. Just like Premiere, AE will interpret your offline files as the proper sources and require you to reconnect each of them manually. Even using proxies would have no benefits here as it does not update the timelien structure. I'm wondering, though, since you both use Premiere, can't you just export an EDL or AAF and then re-import? I rarely use Premiere, but seems exactly what you would want to do. Would be simple on Avid systems...

  • Reconnecting Media FCP does not see?

I am going through lessons in the book and have copied media and project files from the hard drive. On some macs, everything seems to open fine, while on other macs, some of the media opens fine, however, some clips do not show in the Timeline, even though they appear in the Browser with a red line through them.
When I check the hard drive, the media is clearly on the hard drive.
    1. Any idea why it might be doing this?
    2. When I control click on the clip in question in the Timeline, and choose Reconnect Media, it works fine after locating the clip on the drive. Is there a way to do this for multiple clips rather than doing it one clip at a time?
    Thanks!!!!

in the Reconnect Files window, when you press Locate and get the Reconnect dialog, there should be a checkbox saying "Reconnect All Files in Relative Path" ... if you enable that one it should find all other files in the same path without having to do it one by one

  • Can't reconnect my media

My captions in the video I am making said they were offline all of a sudden and I tried to reconnect the media with the reconnect media button and I even tried to re import the captions and it still says offline and won't work. What should I do to get my media back

If the media has not been created within FCE then the media ia stored on a disc somewhere.
Is the actual media still on that disc and mounted correctly?
Telling us more about the file type of this media will help.

  • Reconnecting Media to offline clips

    Hi all,
I have an interesting situation with a client.  Never seen this problem/scenario before.
    Here is the setup....
--> Client is logging all footage on her computer.
--> I provided her with a formatted Excel document that will allow me to import a batch list.
--> I converted her Excel logs to a txt document, then successfully imported the batch list into FCP.
--> After importing the log, FCP appears to like the log information.  Everything is in its proper column,  the clip icon (still with a red slash through it) and all of the necessary info (Clip name, Media Start and Media End, Log notes, Reel, etc) are all properly placed.  FCP Even calculates the duration of the clip for us.
The problem is, when I try to "Reconnect Media" in an effort to connect the log information in FCP to the actual clips, it is a massive fail.
What I am seeing when trying to Reconnect Media....
--For starters, I notice that all of the logging entries in the browser are checkmarked as offline.
--When I try to Reconnect Media, the RM dialog is asking me to search for the NAME of the individually logged clip, rather than the REEL.
--RM cannot successfully reconnect media.  At best, I turn off the Match Name option (Even though the REEL name is spelled perfectly in comparison to the actual video file), then manually select the clip to reconnect to.  Interestingly, upon reconnecting, FCP has renamed the REEL in the browser as "0", rather than using the actual reel name.
Any help as to how I can import the clients log files(36 pages of info) and connect them to the actual video files?
    Thanks,
    Matt

If the clips are not actually missing, you could try to refresh the timeline by using cmd-0 and then going to the timeline options tab. Then select name only where it says "thumbnail display". Press ok to accept the change, then repeat the process to add thumbnails back to your timeline.

  • Final Cut 5 - Won't recognize video files when I try to reconnect media

Help! Somehow FCP5 no longer recognizes my clips as video files.
The problem started when I transferred some clips to another drive so I could reformat my primary external drive. (It's new, and had been formatted for PC, and I felt I needed to reformat it for Mac.) I moved the files off the drive using my PC, held them on another external PC-formatted drive, then used MacDrive 7 to put them back once the formatting was done.
When I plugged the newly formatted drive back in, my Mac no longer recognized the files as video files because the file extension had been removed... It thought they were "Unix executable files." I added ".mov" to the end of the file names and they then seemed to work fine in QuickTime.
But FCP will not recognize them now... At first, when I try to "reconnect media," they are grayed out; when I select "All files" in the Reconnect Media dialog and they appear to be available. But when I choose one nothing happens and it goes back to the Reconnect Media dialog.
Did the back and forth between PC and Mac file systems screw up my files somehow?

Did the back and forth between PC and Mac file systems screw up my files somehow?
Yes. Unfortunately the move has almost certainly caused the loss of the resource data that would have been (invisibly) attached to those files.
By adding a specific .mov extension after the fact you will have helped the Mac correctly identify the file type / asscoiations but also significantly you will have physically changed the filename eg from "clip" to "clip.mov". This means that when you come to reconnect the media in FCP , then FCP will be looking for files that no longer exist at the given path eg when specifically looking for our example clip called "clip" of course it won't find it.
Try this as a test... first remove the ".mov" extension from one or more of the clips, select those clips and press Cmd-Opt-I to open an Info window for the selection. You'll see an "Open with:" popup and in that popup you should choose QuickTime Player (if its a Unix Executable then it will initially list Terminal as the appropriate app, you have to choose Other... then in the open dialog choose Enable > All Applications and then navigate to and select the Quicktime Player app as the appropriate app). After you've done that restart FCP and see if you can now reconnect to those clips.
