Can't reconnect 'missing' photos

After importing all my photos from PS Elements 8, taking the suggested defaults, I was presented in the Library grids many cells with the broken icon in the upper rh corner. Upon running the 'Find Missing Photos', I received a report saying there are some 13,678 'missing' photos. I then followed the procedure outlined in a help file to Locate the missing photos, which described  their last path. However, there was no reconnection done once I completed this procedure. I then went into PS Elements 8 and performed a Search for one of the filenames that were reported 'missing'. The result showed two different photos, in two different locations, but having the same .JPG name. I recognized both photos as being valid, but wonder how to proceed with what seems to be a reason why the 'missing' notation, as I figure the software can't deal with dupicate filenames. I surely didn't expect this many images reporting 'missing', so seems there's plenty of recovery work to be done, maybe in the realm of renaming one of the duplicated images; eg. filename_1.jpg.
Have you seen this problem, and what would you recommend to fix it?
Thanks very much.
Fred

dj,
I'm impressed you're up so early responding to Forum folks like me!
OK, my Olympus DSLR is the E520 model with latest firmware installed.  My version of Lr4 is 4.4.1, updated right after I installed the program.
Leave the disconnected photos to me, as I think there will be lots of work ahead of me to go through my plethora of saved media cards (my secondary backup sources) to bring in those missed photos.
As for the .ORF extension photos, here's what I've found (prety interesting).
Initially, I did a search of the new Lr4 catalog for '*.ORF' files, and got the report that no files existed of that type.
Today, I inserted a USB key on which I had placed several photos for processing at Costco, some of which were .ORF files.
I had Lr4 open in the background, when suddenly it came onto the screen with cells filled with all those photos on the stick.
It identified both .JPG and .ORF files, and here's the kicker;...after awhile, it "grayed out" all the photos, saying there was already a duplicate of ALL those files in the Lr4 catalog.  This was in the COPY panel I saw this.
So, it seems Lr4 does recognize my .ORF files after all, however, strange the SEARCH function reported nothing existed.
Sorry for all these notes, but hopefully I'll be cured and OK very soon, with your help :-)
Regards,
Fred

  • Can't reconnect Missing Referenced Masters

I have a library which is a mixture of Managed and Referenced Masters.  Library on SSD and Referenced Masters on HDD.
A very small number of Masters have gone AWOL and I can't reconnect them.  Using Spotlight, I can locate the actual Masters with Finder - they are just where I expect them to be, in a subfolder in a Folder called "Aperture Masters" on my HDD.
    Here is an example
The badge on this image looks like this
When I choose Update from Master, I get this message
So then I try to reconnect via "Locate Referenced Files..." and get this message
These images are findable by filtering on "Missing" or "Offline"
All but one have the badge with the arrow and the yellow triangle.
One has a badge like this (a kind of inverted MobileMe sourced badge
Any ideas on how to reconnect?

Interesting.  The User Manual I was reading is a PDF and it defines the badge as this.  Note that the badge is flipped in the two versions and the PDF doesn't mention FaceBook or Flickr.
Seems I should re-download the User Manual

  • How do I recover missing photos in iPhoto 11?

    HI!
I recently upgraded to iPhoto 11 (from iPhoto 9, I believe). There are 12 photos missing from  the 'Photos' section of my library. There are dashed lines around the locations where the photos should be (it is a sequence of 12 pictures), so I assume the originals are in the iPhoto Library somewhere. How do I have the placed back where they should be?
         Thanks for your help.
    Doug Chisholm

Give these two fixes a try  to see if they can recover those missing photos.  But be sure to have a backup of your current library in case the results are not to your liking:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Missing photos after migration from iPhoto to Photos

Last week I upgraded my desktop MacPro from OS 10.9.latest to OS 10.10.3. When I first opened Photos, it did the migration from iPhotos without apparent problem. But I have noticed that many (hundreds at least) of the photos from my pre-migration iPhoto library are now not in Photos. I mounted my pre-upgrade backup drive on a laptop running OS 10.9.latest, and can find specific missing photos OK on the backup. But if I search the main drive on my desktop Mac, for example for "P1440608", I get no results. I have tried rebuilding the Photos library with no change - the missing photos are still missing.
One option is to erase my MacPro main drive and restore from the backup drive to OS 10.9.latest. This should put me back to where I was. Is there a viable alternative? Please note that my iPhoto version was 8.1.2. It will not open in OS 10.10.3, and the App Store will not let me upgrade to the most recent version. I do have Time Machine plus external bootable (SuperDuper) backup of the desktop MacPro, plus that laptop running OS 10.9.latest as resources available.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Can't Find Uploaded Photos

I was uploading photos to iphoto. Yellow warning came up "almost at capacity" or something like that - i clicked okay and began deleting a old photos while the photos were still uploading - the upload finished and I was prompted to delete or save photos on camera. I deleted because needed to go shoot more. Now in the Iphoto event, the top right corner says there are 320 photos but I can only see 216. Any thoughts on where I can find the missing photos?

Assuming you're referring to iPhoto on your Mac and with the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
how much free space on your boot drive?
what do you see when iPhoto opens?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
It's strongly recommended that one keep a minimum of 10-15 GB of free space on the boot drive for optimal system and application performance.  How much free space do you have?

You are missing one or more photos - youprobably have a page background that requires a photo which is behind a page with photos on it - all pages must either have a photo or be a color - if you have a gray background it requires a photo - look through the book carefully and be sure to look at the background on any full page photos - you will find one or more missing photos

  • Missing photo links - changing name of external Hard Drive location

I have searched for the answer to this high and low without success if someone can help...
I have a large collection of photos that I store on an external firewire hard drive (too many to store on my macbook pro). My iphoto library is on my Mac and when importing photos to iphoto I did not import the files so the originals remain on the external hard drive and are therefore linked to in iphoto.
I did it this way, rather than storing the library database on the external drive, so that I could access the information and thumbnails when travelling and not connected to my external drive.
I've upgraded my external hard drive and it will have a different name. I need to transfer all the photos across to the new hard drive.
Is there a quick way to reconnect all my original photos when transferred to the new hard drive or a better way to transfer them? Having tried to copy them across manually, obviously as expected I get a missing photo exclamation mark and am asked to browse to the file to relink. This is OK to reconnect one or two photos, but would take me forever with 17,000.
I remember Adobe Photo Album had a command reconnect missing files, and it would go off and search for the files you may have moved location (or changed the directory name in which they were held). Is such a function available in iphoto? I've tried the iphoto re-build functions, but this doesn't look in other attached volumes for the photos.
Alternatively, is there a way to edit the iphoto library database to do a search and replace of the Volume name to the new name and reconnect the link to then photos? e.g. Can you manually edit the albumdata.xml file (and would this be the file to edit) for example, and rebuild the database with Photo Library Manager?
Can you re-import all the photos from the new location, and rebuild the links that way, or does this create duplicate entries and not merge album, keyword event data etc for each photo?
My last resort is re-importing all the photos again, but of course I'd loose all my keywords, albums, events and other info I've spent a long time entering into iphoto.
    Thanks
    Phil

I just wanted to close this off to say that my solution worked fine and my iphoto libraries are up and running in perfect order again. And to summarise the solution so you don't have to read the entire post above.
This solution is for those wanting to have the iphoto library on your Mac and store the original photos linked elsewhere on an external / network drive (i.e. not imported into the iphoto library). Then you want to change the location where the originals are stored (say for example you get a new bigger external Hard Drive - like I did), and that new location will have a different name. Most people recommend importing the photos into the iphoto library, keeping everything together, and this can then be moved anywhere and accessed.
So to summarise, if you are moving original photos linked into iphoto:
    1. Back up everything you can first...
    2. First try moving the files (not copying and deleting) - the aliases may reconnect, especially if they are on your main HD. You may need to manually reconnect one file in each sub-directory.
    3. Move your photos to your external HD / network drive. Note if the new place has the same name as your old external HD then the aliases probably won't need to be fixed.
    4. Download and install File Buddy or similar Alias 'fixer'
    5. Go to your iphoto Library, right click, "Show Package Contents"
    6. Copy the "Originals" directory to another location so that file buddy can read it.
    7. Run File buddy, fixing the aliases in your copy of the Originals folder, pointing to where you've moved your photos too (restrict the directories as much as possible where you point file buddy to search for the missing files to speed it up). You will only have issues if you have multiple copies of the same file - i.e. that have the same file name and creation date, and file buddy will give you a list of these. This in itself is a good check to see you don't have the same file in two places - I only had issues with folders of photos that I'd been given from family in which there were multiple copies of the same photo. I've now cleaned these up, saved space and ran file buddy again to finish the job off.
    8. Finally, move this now fixed "Originals" folder back into your iphoto library (package contents) - writing over / replacing the original "Originals" directory.
All being well, should be fixed!
Just to share with you the benefits I find of having my photos stored on an external HD and the iphoto library on my Macbook:
-- Saves space on my limited internal HD
-- others can access the photos, set up and manage their own iphoto libraries pointing at the same originals, and we don't need two copies of the original files
-- I can access the iphoto library and manage albums, add keywords, titles, etc when not connected to the External HD, though you're limited to viewing the (not too small) thumbnail pictures iphoto stores in its library
I'm loving iphoto even more now, it makes managing and viewing my 1000's of photos a pleasure.
    Cheers
    Phil

  • Can't Reconnect

I brought a couple thousand pics into the Organizer (Get Photos & Videos / From Files & Folders) and tagged them. Now, when I double-click on a thumb in the Organizer, it says the file is missing and goes looking for it... but never finds it.
If I click on "Browse" and find the photo and click "Reconnect" it says "File already exists in the catalog." I notice that it scans my second hard drive (F:), as well as my C: drive. The full message is "File already exists in the catalog. F:\pictures\DSC-0264.jpg was not connected to C:\pictures\DSC_0264.jpg"
If I use "File" / "Reconnect" it seems to scan my whole system, but again fails to reconnect.

I am new (about 2 months) to PSE 8 and have been having a 'Can't Reconnect' problem and could never reconnect anything even when I browsed.  Long story short:  Solved the problem early on by deleting the photos causing the problem. Everything was going well when I decided to clear out all photos from Windows Live Photo Gallery.  Stupid move, I wasn't thinking.  I also know PSE 8 wants all work done in the program.   Had all photos backed up before PSE 8 was installed. I am in the process of loading all photos (about 800)  to the organizer.
Hope someone can learn from my experience.  My question is:  I did back up all my folders on cd's the night before the "BIG GOOF" - what will happen if I try to load them onto my husband's computer after installing PSE 7 or PSE 8?  Was afraid to try it on my computer.  Will there be an "encryption" in the data for each photo because of reconnect, causing the same problem making the cd's useless on either PSE 7 or 8?   I guess I could try a hand full of photos to test the waters.  Can my daughter use the cd's on her photo program (not Photoshop....), without any problem?
I don't like the Reconnect function and have, I think, disabled it. I am sure there are those who find it helpful.  All said, I like the program and feel comfortable with it.  But, I am still learning. On the positive side, I can now look at each photo with a fresh perspective for editing purposes.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Can't find missing files

When I want to edit, it starts looking for missing files. Then I can't edit. I reconnect and it keeps searching. Now there is nothing it can do until it finds  those files. Where did they go? I can I just move on and continue editing photos?

Mike - please reply to the post rather than message me direct.  Others on here are far more qualified than I.
if it is saying all your photos are now missing then I would guess you have changed a folder/subfolder above where they are stored.  So if you have the photos all in ...\Pictures\Mike\Adobe and then at some point you changed the Mike folder to be called Flano then all the links will break.  If this is what may have happened rename the folder back to what it was and all the links should be OK again.  I would still recommend trying to find at least 1 of the missing photos using a search in My Computer just to ensure they are still there somewhere.

  • Does PSA3 SE have Catalog Recover and Reconnect Missing Files

Hi Jim Jutte and Colin Walls,
I was looking at this thread over on the PS Elements forum where the submitter seems to have some problems where he thinks that some photo files did not transfer from PSA3 SE to PSE 5.
    http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc1dc66
I suggest that you also look at this thread. I don't have PSA3 SE to know what functions it does or does not have. If PSA3 SE does have Catalog Recover and Reconnect Missing Files, can he go back to his PSA3 SE Catalog now and do the Reconnect Missing Files and Catalog Recover, then retry the catalog upgrade again in PSE5?

    Colin,
It's been a while since I'm used any bells and whistles in Access. What is
    the function called?
    Cheers
