Can't reconnect photos after Library move

I converted my library from managed to referenced and moved the originals to an external hard drive.  I searched for missing files and found that a handful were indeed missing.  Not bad, just 32 out of 31,326.  I tried "Locate Referenced Files" and found them easily on my external drive.  My problem is that the "reconnect" button is greyed out.  I guess I can just re-import them, but I lose the adjustments and added meta data that way.  Any ideas?

Hi Karen,
There are sometimes permissions issues when moving items around to different drives. Repairing Permissions might help.
The referenced images might not be recognized if there is a difference in the file, such as file name or pixel size. I would first confirm that you have the correct images. If so, then you can try to force the reconnect by holding down your Option & Command keys to see if the reconnect option is no longer greyed out.
Last resort is to re-import.

  • Upgrade to Win7 & PSE-9; Can't Reconnect Photos in Catalog

Just bought a new computer, which upgraded me from XP to Win 7, and at  the same time I upgraded to Photoshop Elements 9. I restored my Catalog backup, but found a majority of my photos had become disconnected due to a change in the folder hierarchy from XP to Win 7. Many of my photos when I was using XP were in C:\documents and  settings\..., but in Windows 7 there is no documents and settings folder  under C:, and Windows won't even let me create a folder with that name so as to move the photos back into it. So now all my photos are in  C:\Users\My Pictures\... and PSE can't seem to find them. I have to browse on each one to manually reconnect it. Very tedious and no way that is going to work for nearly 10,000 photos in my catalog.
What's  worse, the program freezes after I perform a half-dozen or so reconnects, and I have to do a force-quit. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program, and also the suggestion on this Adobe tech note (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/400/kb400848.html) and neither seems to abate the freezing issue. I've also tried both restore options (restore to same location and restore to new  location/preserve folder layout) and the folder hierarchy is still messed up either way. Any suggestions?

  • Can't import photos after change in iPhoto 6

    Hello
I work with iPhoto to organize and print my photos. To change the photos I take Photoshop Elements 3. After I have update iPhoto 5 to iPhoto 6 I can't import my photos after I change it in Photoshop Elements 3 iPhoto gives me following message "unreadable format" but I have trying it with TIFF, JPEG and PSD.
Is there anybody how can help me?
    Thanks

    Gohlem:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Where are those files located that you're trying to bring into the iPhoto Library? If they are located within the iPhoto Library folder you must move them to the desktop and import from there.
If you're using PSE from within iPhoto as the editor of choice, i.e. thru iPhoto's preferences, you should be aware of the caveats regarding that method.
Any edit by PSE that requires an extension change, i.e. layers or other particular types of edits, that file must be saved to the desktop and imported as a new file. Once in the library further edits by PSE can go as usual. Additionally the file name and location must rename the same otherwise iPhoto will not recognize it.

  • Can't import photos after upgrade to Tiger 10.4.8

After upgrading from Panther to Tiger I can no longer import photos to iPhoto 4 from my camera. I get error messages that say "Unreadable files: 240. The following files could not be imported (they may be unrecognized file type or the file may not contain valid data). When I go to the directory they are located in, I see a bunch of JPG files, but when I try to open them I get a message from Preview saying it may be corrup or a file format Preview doesn't recognize.
I can view the photos that were in iPhoto prior to the OS upgrade without any problem.

Hi, hope I've caught this discussion before it's ended.
Been getting "Unreadable files. The following files could not be imported (they may be unrecognized file type or the file may not contain valid data" ... but then ...
Was having problems with my hard drive and was about to back up my iPhoto Library when I checked the folder size with 'Apple i' and the 'lock' option was ticked. I definitely didn't option it. I've added images to iPhoto with this option unchecked and they've all gone in fine. Fantastic.
I too think my problems started after Tiger upgrade back last Autumn, loaded some pics in iPhoto at that time, deleted from camera and went back to iPhoto - none there!
Try this option, hope it works for someone else.

  • Lightroom 4 Bug: can only see photos in Library mode, not develop mode

This may be related to other imported catalog bugs, but does not seem to be quite the same. In Lightroom 4, with an upgraded Lightroom 3 catalog:
    1. Select a photo in Library mode.
    2. Click on Develop to go to Develop mode
Screen shows "No photo selected". I cannot edit photos in Develop mode.
I can see and edit photos that are found in smart collections, but not photos that are simply in my collections from 2012, 2011, etc. folders

This happened to me, too, after importing a couple older LR3 catalogs (upgrading/consolidating). I could see the photo in Library module but when I pressed "D" (single photo selected) I was getting the "no photo selected" error message--for every photo I tried. I wasn't able to open any photos at all in the develop module. (These were photos that were fine before installing LR4 and upgrading.) Photos were from imported LR3 and LR4 Beta catalogs.
I restarted and everything seems ok--for now!
So if you come across this thread with this same issue, restart and see if that helps. (Before restarting LR I optimized as suggested above, which did nothing for the "no photo selected" issue. And this isn't related to the parent folder issue, I left my photos in the same place and didn't have more than 3k photos in any of the parent folders. I read in other threads that people had the issue again after importing other catalogs. I'm about to do that so I'll report back.

  • I can see my photos but cannot move them anywhere or do anything with them

I transferred photos as I have always done from my digital camera to Iphoto. After transferring the photos I deleted them from my camera. I can see the photos in Iphoto but I cannot move them anywhere, I cannot download them e.g. to send with an email, I cannot change them in any way, I cannot delete them.
I thought I had done something wrong so I shot two more photos and put them onto my laptop exactly as before. These photos are fine and can be moved around as always. What now???

    Hi again
That was a great help. Thank you so much. I could open "Show original file" on approx. half of the photos (there were 49 in all). I have been able to save those to my desktop. They were not copied and are now no longer in the original file.
But it gets even stranger. When I right click on the others (20 in all) "Show original file" is not active and when I click on show file they are not in there. These I can not move in any folder whether "all photos" or events so are still lost to me at the moment. All the photos were taken from my camera at the same time. Do you have any more wonderful ideas?... Glinda11

  • ITunes musical library located on a WD 2TB, ext. drv. Computer destroyed by virus; ED survived. Bought new laptop, connected ED. Not able to see library. ED shows as 'G:' 95% full. How can I reconnect my old library to new laptop?

I had my iTunes musical library on an ext. drv. WD 2TB, ‘MY BOOK ESSENTIAL'. Three weeks ago, my computer was infected by a virus that fried it. It did not affect the external drive. I bought a new computer: a laptop, Dell XPS, Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU, Windows 7 Home Premium. I have been able to connect the WD external drive; however, I am not able to see the musical library in my iTunes or Explorer. ‘My Computer’ shows the external drive as ‘G:’ 95% full. It reads, 32.1 GB free of 1.36 TB. When I click on the drive to see its contents, it shows nothing. The library in iTunes also shows nothing. Can anyone help, please? How can I reconnect my old musical library to my new laptop and iTunes? Many thanks.

Hmm, viruses don't generally "fry" drives. They can make bootable operating systems not bootable, hide data, and corrupt executable files. Software can potentially wipe all the data from the drive but it shouldn't be able to physically damage the drive. Bah! What's done is done.
As to unhiding your files assuming they are just hidden....
Hit Start > Run, type in CMD and press enter. Type the following at the prompt and then press enter:
    attrib -h -s -r g:\*.* /d /s
This tells windows to clear the hidden, read-only, and system flags from all files on the drive, assuming of course your profile has the power to "see" the files and change them.
If that doesn't work then you may need to take ownership of the drive first. The drive may have security settings that make it "belong" to an account on your old system. Right-click on the drive in Windows Explorer and click Properties. Click the Security tab, the Advanced button, the Owner tab, then the Edit tab. Make yourself the owner, then you can make any other changes to the security settings you want to back on the Permissions tab. (If you can't change the owner log out and log back in as Administrator). For iTunes your account (or everyone) and SYSTEM need full access to all files. Any changes you make should be applied to "This folder, subfolders and files", should be inheritable and you should also replace the permissions on all child objects.

  • Can't see photos after update to 9.3.2

I'm using Lion 10.7.4 and recently updated to iPhoto 9.3.2.
Though I can see my photos in thumbnails they will not show up in the iPhoto window when double clicked.
Each event is (blank) black though it retains its title.
I've tried command-option while opening iPhoto and repairing permissions/rebuilding to no avail.
For some reason my users/home folder/Library folder is not showing up in the Finder so I can't dump the .plist files.
    Suggestions are much appreciated.

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • Can't find photos after backup restore

    Hey,
I recently began to use my iPhone 4S after using iPhone 4 for about a year. It's been working fine. I took some photos and sent some messages on the 4S over the past week. When I connected it to iTunes, I chose to restore from backup, as I wanted to transfer all of my contacts over. After around 10 minutes, it restored.#
When I went back on the 4S, I noticed that my message history from the last week was not present (only messages from when I was using the iPhone 4). As well as this, all of my iPhone 4 photos are on the 4S now, and I can't find the photos I took with the 4S over the last week.So essentially, I think I've backed up my 4S to my iPhone 4's data, losing all my 4S data from the past week?!
So my question is, is there anyway I can find these photos and messages? Some of them were quite important too me, so I would really appreciate any advice.

You restored your 4S from your iphone 4 backup.  The only hope you have of retrieving your current data is if you have a back up of your 4S.
If not those data is gone.

  • Can't reconnect files after move to D/drive

I'm using PSE 3.2.  I wanted to create more space on my C: drive so I moved all my photos to my D: drive but have been unable to reconnect my photos on either drive.  I've reconfigured the program to look in the D drive using the preferences menu. I've even moved all the photos back to the C: drive and tried it back from scratch. When I try to reconnect the photos using the browse function, the program crashes.  I'm wondering if I install a more recent version of PSE or even a paid version like Adobe photoshop elements 9...will this enable me to correct the problem?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    First question - to clarify
Do you have the FREE Photoshop Album or did you PAY to purchase Photoshop Elements ?
Next comments are relevant if you have a paid purchase Photoshop Elements version 3  __
It has been a long time since I moved files under PSE verison 3. I am not sure what is the best solution for you because of the limitations/inconveniences of 3 (v3 was the first version to have the Organizer). More discussion is probably beneficial after you review my comments and also those of DJ Paige.
Here are some specific recollections for PSE 3:
1 - The PSE Reconnect command can (will) crash if there is any error (inconsistency) in your configuration of hardware known to Windows. I suspect that it can even be factors like a disk that is shared across your network drive which is not accessible at the time.    I think it can crash even if you don't have any needed photos on that disk drive: Reconnect expects that it may find photo files on disks unknown to the PSE Catalog, so I think it searches everywhere.
2 - Stacks and Version Sets don't all move when you do the moves from 3.2 PSE (later versions they do).
-- For Stacks, you should be able to do an Expand All Stacks command before doing the moving with PSE in order to have the Stacks moved.
-- For Version Sets, I think that you will need to move each of the photos of the version set individually..
    Other General comments:
-- If that D drive is an external hard drive, it is very important for PSE 5 (and earlier including v 3) that this external drive always be assigned the same drive letter by Windows.
-- If you plan to upgrade your version of PSE, you will need to have a very clean (error free) PSE Catalog

  • How do I reconnect my iTunes files so they play after Library move?

Help! I had a 13g iTunes Library which I moved to an internal drive in my G4 Dual, not the original drive it has been on since 2002. For some reason I was unable to play the files in the new location so I moved them all back to their original folder and now for each tune I try to play I get a prompt "iTunes cannot locate the file xxx. Do you want to locate it?'. Well, I can't do this for 13g worth of tunes. I have tried to Consolidate and do all the proper things listed here as well as moving the whole folder back to the internal drive to try again. All the music is there but in every case it asks me if I want to locate the tune beofre playing it. How do I re-attach each file to it's title in the Music list w/o doing it individually? Thank you so much!

    dsf,

  • Can't see photos after moving iphoto library to new imac.

The info for each picture and folder is there but there is not thumbnail or image.  Any help?

Then  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Can't open photos after carbonite restore

I just did a Carbonite restore on my recently fixed iMac. I got a new hardrive and the guys who fixed my computer upgraded me to OSX Lion (I had Leopard before). My photos will not open in the newest version of iPhoto 11. iPhoto will not even launch, saying "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto". When I click upgrade, it says "iPhoto is unable to open this library"
I understand that my photos from my previous iPhoto 8 are not readable on iPhoto11. Carbonite can't help me with this as they say it's due to the upgrade. I'm beyond frustrated, especially after how long it took to restore the photos back onto my computer.
I can see that all my photos are on my computer and thought about trying to fix all this manually, but I'm not sure how to even proceed as I can't open up the iPhoto program. And I'm worried about messing anything up by poking around.
Any help or advice would be really appreciated. Thank you!

You'll need to start over with a new library as follows:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

  • Can't select photo after scans for faces

I just bought a laptop with iphoto 09 on it; previously I used 08 (or earlier; can't remember). {Yes I know a new version '11 just came out. Given the number of problems reported maybe I'm not sad about the purchase-timing}.
My library is huge with 30K+ images; I keep it on an external HD. After opening the new iphoto it asked to tweak my library which I allowed. Upon first opening all images seem to be there and selectable, but after it scans for faces (takes hours), I can no longer select a photo, necessary in order to start identifying faces.
I tried closing iphoto and reopening - same thing; images selectable prior to running faces scan, then not.
I tried rebuilding the library. This lost all my keyword structure (I use keyword manager) and after the rebuild bombed failing to import all the images, I deleted the rebuilt library before testing whether it could select images.
My old library does seem as if it should be rebuilt, many images now appear blank as thumbnails though present when selected.
¿ Will rebuilding the library fix the selecting-face scanning problem?
¿ Is there a way to rebuild the library that will retain my keyword structure?
BTW, I deleted the partially rebuilt library via iphoto library manager...
    Thanks for any help.

Darn! It seems to say MS-DOS (FAT). I thought I had fixed all my HDs to be properly formatted for the Macintosh.
    Does this mean I'm SOL?
I could put a screen shot of my disk utility...
Or how about I just copy the entire iphoto library to my new giant-er HD and then reformat the EHD and copy it back ... is that necessary? And if so, how best to move the library. Do I need to use iphoto library manager or just slide the whole thing onto the internal HD?
    Thanks a million....

  • Can't add photos to library, Revel says they are duplicates, but they are not in my library.

I'm having an issue trying to add certain photos to my Revel Libraries.  I am attempting to upload from the Mac app, but Revel is telling me that some photos are duplicates and can't be added. But when I look through my library, those photos don't show up.
I had attempted to sync from my phone but had issues with Revel taking up a lot of space, so I swtiched to uploading from my computer.  Could this be causing some of the issues?

    Truly happy to help!
So, we'll proceed through a process of elimination.  First, I want to clear your Mac's Revel app cache.  If that doesn't solve the problem, then we'll turn towards your iOS devices.
On you Mac, since you have no files uploading or syncing down to be backed up on your local hard drive, it is safe to clear the app cache.  This will force the app cache to be rebuilt (and may require some time for your Mac to sync the index of your files from the server).
Click on your Mac's Finder menu Go > Go to Folder > and enter:
    ~/Library/Containers
In the Containers folder, delete the following folder and its contents (this is Revel's app cache):
    ~/Library/Containers/com.adobe.Carousel.mac
Then launch Revel and sign in again. If you disabled Keep Originals in Revel Settings, you may need to turn this off again.  If you had it enabled previously to sync / backup your originals on your Mac, you will not need to download them all again.  Whatever originals you had on your Mac already are safely stored in your Adobe Revel Library, in your Pictures folder.
After letting Revel Mac sync up with the server, if you are still blocked from uploading those "duplicate" photos, then we'll turn towards Revel iOS apps.  Do you Revel iOS apps say "Up-to-date" in the status area at the bottom of your library view?  If you tap the cloud, do you show anything still syncing/uploading from that device?  If not, uninstall the app -- this will clear out the iOS app cache.  Then reinstall the iOS app and sign in again.  Can you upload those photos now?
Let me know how it goes!
    --Charlie
