Can't record more than 5 tracks, why?

i Have 5 tracks and I'm trying to record on a sixth one but when I hit record it ends up recording over a previous track. Why?

hi
the track end marker for future reference can be found in two places:
1. scroll to the end of the arrange page (horizontally). at the top of the screen is the time ruler - you should see a small white box. on the left the numbers are in white and to the right the numbers are greyed out because that's where logic will stop recording. drag the marker to the right and the number of bars in the arrange page will increase.
2. in the transport, below the tempo display is a number - this represents the bar where logic will play upto. Cick, hold and drag up or down to increase/decrease it.
Hope that helps

  • Cheap way to record more than 12 tracks?

    Hi all!
I´m looking for a lo-cost solution to record more than 12 tracks simultaneously. While 12 tracks is enough for most of my projects, I do some occasional live gig recordings where I take the feed from FOH mixing desk direct outs to my M-Audio FW1814 interface. More often than not 12 tracks is not enough so I am forced to leave out some channels, which I hate to do.
However I don´t want to pay the extra cash for Logic Pro, since outside the track number restriction, the features of LE are more than sufficent for my needs.
So I am thinking of using some other multi-track software for live recordimg and then exporting the tracks to LE for editing and mixing.
Audacity claims to support up to 16 simultaneous tracks, but I haven´t been able to achieve that. I could be doing something wrong, since the documentation doesn´t really shed any light on the subject. Does anyone here use Audacity for multi-track recording?
Any other alternatives? Keep in mind that I don´t really need any fancy features outside the recording itself.

what version of LE are you using?
i think that version 7.2 up'd the simultaneous IO of
    LE.
I don´t think so. I browsed through the "New features in LE 7.2" document ( http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/NewFeatures_in_Logic_Express7.2.pdf )and didn´t find any mention about i/o. I´m using 7.1.1 or whatever the last update for 7.1 was.
As NoEQ has mentioned M-Powered Pro Tools is at your
disposal. If you search the internet you can find
the academic version (included the dv toolkit) for
    $150 dollars.
The problem is that I live in Finland and I doubt there´s any academic versions for sale here. And 150$ is still a bit much for me. This gig recording thing is really just a hobby for me, so I don´t want to put too much money (which I dont have anyway...) in it.
you could just as easily send some of the tracks off
the board to a bus and then record a sum of the bus
and some out of the direct outs.
Yeah, I´ve done that couple of times and it usually works fine, to be honest. But it is still a bit frustrating to not have the whole capacity of my hardware in my disposal, just because of an artificial software restriction.
But thanks to everyone that have participated in this thread. I´m still considering my problem unsolved, so feel free to chime in.

  • How do I record more than 2 tracks at a time with my new board?

i'm afraid the only solution looks like returning or selling it and getting something else.  that console is described as having a [emphasis added] "built-in, bi-directional stereo USB audio interface..."

  • How to RECORD more than ONE TRACK at a time ? ? ?

I have looked, read and tried - but cannot enable more than one track at a time... How do you do it?
I am using a Lexicon Omega USB interface. With two mics plugged in to it, I am able to assign MIC 1 to a track, and MIC 2 onto a different track. However, cannot get BOTH tracks to go "live" at the same time.
    Thanx: Stacey

"basic track" is a short cut. whenever i explain something to someone recording an audio instrument i always tell them to create s New Basic Track. it's simple, to the point, has no effects on it (and you can add those later, anyway, the BEST way to do it)
however, either would not cause the issues you're dealing with at the moment, both are valid. Basic just skips a step.

  • Can takes from more than one track be comped at the same time?

    Greetings,
I know that this question has been asked recently in this forum (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9527542&#9527542), but I don't think that the respondents completely understood the question... Or perhaps I did not understand the suggested solutions to the problem. I will ask the question in a slightly different way...
Suppose that I record guitar with 2 microphones (a pickup mic, and a room mic). The first microphone is recorded onto track 1, the second microphone is recorded onto track 2. Multiple takes are done in this manner. When it comes time to comp the tracks, how is it done? Can the takes from more than one track be comped together at the same time? I have tried to do this by grouping both tracks together, but it does not work.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

You had the right idea grouping the tracks together. You must make sure that in the group settings, the box titled "region selection (edit)" is checked. This will allow you to make the same cuts (or in this case, swipes) on all regions in the group.

  • Can't record more than 71:16 of audio in any session

Thanks ahead of time for your help.
When I open a new session, arm an audio track and start recording, Logic Pro inform me that I have 71:15 left of recording space. I have more than 80gig free on my recording drive. Once I run out those 71:15 of recording, I can't record any more audio in that track. Arming the track and pressing record makes the computer try to record, but then something happens (a window flashes faster than I can read it) and the session is simply put into play at the insertion point. I have turned of the maximum recording time, and I've also tried setting it to 500 minutes.
    Help please...

  • Recording more than 2 tracks?

I bought Logic Express 8 and an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra interface to record keyboard, vocal and guitar. The Fast Track Ultra is a 4 channel USB interface.
I just tried to record the keyboard in stereo, and a vocal track at the same time. The problem is, I don't seem to be able to record into more than two input channels at one time, and the stereo keyboard is taking up both. Does Logic Express 8 have more than 2 inputs? The salesman at Sam Ash told me I could do this, but I can't find a way to create more than two input channels - which will totally negate the point of having a 4 channel interface.
    Help! I'm VERY frustrated.
    thanks

    Hi,
I'm not an expert on audio interfaces, but you should check a couple of things:
    - go to ...Applications:Utilities:Audio/Midi Configuration and set you interface as the standard audio input and output
    - in Logic, go to Preferences > Audio, and choose your interface under Devices > Core Audio > Device (see the picture on page 99 of Help > Logic Express 8 User Manual)
    - Choose the appropriate inputs in your Audio Tracks by clicking-holding on the Input Select button of your Channel Strip (see the picture on page 216 of the manual; it's the button that says "Input 1-2"). You should have more choice than just 1-2 there...

  • How can i record more then 2 tracks at a time?

I have my m-audio 2626 8 track preamp/interface going to my mac via firewire into le7 and i only can record two tracks at a time... is there a way to record more at on time? like 8???

It would help if you told us which computer you're using, and system software version.
Your interface has 8 x 8 ins/outs +ADAT, so you can certainly record 8 tracks at once (computer/system permitting) and you need to be running at least OS 10.4.10
LE7 was limited to 8 tracks simultaneous recording (or 12 - I don't recall) and you need to select the M-Audio device in Preferences-> Audio -> Driver. Make sure you have the latest drivers from M-Audio.
If you select an input in the I/O section your audio channel strip, how many inputs do you see? If you see more than two, you should be in business - just shift-click the record arm buttons on all your tracks and press record in your transport.
If you're using an Intel machine, you need to be running LE7 version 7.2+, preferably 7.2.3
Hope something here helps, but if you provide more information about your system you'll get some more specific ideas.

No, I meant what I posted, output.
You have a FireWire interface, how many channels does it offer across the FireWire bus as output? You can record as many tracks, up to 8, as your interface offers for output.

  • Pops, latency, distortion. Can't record more than 2 secs. Audio interface?

As near as I can tell, all my software is up to date, I have the latest drivers for my audio interface, and Garageband has basically stopped working.
Firstly, whenever I start Garageband the first time, I get latency that is as much as a second or more. So I have to quit and restart Garageband every time to fix that.
If I leave Garageband running overnight, it completely forgets about my interface, and I'm forced to reboot in order to get any sound at all into Garageband. It sees my audio interface (a Tascam US-122), but I can play away and it won't get any sound at all from it until a reboot.
This means that pretty much every time I want to use Garageband I've first got to reboot the system to convince MacOSX to first listen to my Tascam. Then I've got to start Garageband, then quit and restart to get rid of the latency. This is quite a pain and I've been living with it for some time.
But now, it's gotten worse. Since upgrading everything, now I can only record a few seconds of music, before Garageband stops, creates crackling sounds and popping, and occasionally distorted versions of what I played, but stretched out and terrible sounding, and all between long gaps of dead air. This is pretty useless.
There are some people that believe there is an issue involving Garageband and Airport. And, one time I was able to record part of a track by turning off all effects and turning off my airport card. But this only worked one time.
From reading other posts, it's clear that are at least some others that are having at least some of these same problems.
So, here's what I'd like to know:
    1. Has anyone had these problems and figured out a fix?
    2. I'd really like to know if anyone is all caught up (10.5.2, latest Garageband, etc...) and is having no problems with Garageband?
    3. If you are not having problems, what audio interface are you using?
    4. I have a Tascam US-122. If you are also have this audio interface, I'd like to know if Garageband is working for you, or if you're having the same problems I'm having.
In case it's not obvious from the above questions, I'm suspecting that my problem might involve my audio interface and I'm hoping we can gather some info here to help resolve that question.
Thanks in advance for your help.

So, I tried recording into Sound Studio using my TASCAM, and I got some of the same intermittent problems I was having in Garageband. Sometimes there would be a long pause and then I'd hear what I had just played but sounding like it was in slow motion and underwater. This suggested either a systemic Apple problem or a TASCAM problem. Putting my bet on TASCAM, I decided to try a new audio interface.
Anyway, after some net searching, I decided on an Edirol FA-66, so I headed on down to my local Guitar Center to buy one.
Only they don't carry them. Apparently, they stopped carrying Edirol stuff a while ago. The guy asked me what I wanted one for and I told him I was recording my guitar on Garageband. His face lighted up and he said, oh, that's easy, you've got to get an Apogee Duet. Because you're a Mac guy, you can buy one. But, I had seen the price and thought that was too much.
So, I looked all over town, and no one had an Edirol. So, I headed home and got online and started reading about the Duet. Every single person that had one raved about it. I also realized that it was only for Macintosh, so if they don't get it right, no sales. I have to say, I liked that.
So, in the end, I went back to Guitar Center and I bought one.
I've had it now for a few hours, and all my latency, pop, and noise problems have, so far, gone away.
But even better, is that the sound quality is stunningly better. At the best of times with my TASCAM US-122, my guitar sound was "thin". It never really sounded anything close to good.
This is a whole new thing. Playing through Garageband is like playing through an amp.
And, it's so nice to have all that rebooting and restarting nonsense over with.
So far, my recommendation is, if you can afford one, go for the Apogee Duet. In fairness, I haven't tried anything but the Duet and my TASCAM, but people online that have agree that the sound quality of the Duet is as good as it gets in this price range.
So, I've seen a number of other posts in which various people complained about problems that sounded similar to mine. Currently, my experience says that it may be your audio interface (or its driver).

  • Can't record more than 2 minutes

    Hi,
I'm trying to record from a minidisc to garageband to then convert to mp3. For some reason, garageband won't record for more than 2 minutes when I need it to record for 2 hours! Please does anyone have any ideas? I'm in a rush to get this done but can't seem to solve the problem.
    Thank you in advance.

I'm about to try again, but the last couple of times I tried, the red light in the record button was no longer read, there still seemed to be something scrolling (sorry for lack of technical terms), but no information recorded. Scrolling back, I could see that the red block (recorded data) had stopped at 2 mins.
Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

  • I can't seem to get GB to recognize my Behringer X1222 USB Mixer. It will record, but shouldn't I be able to see and/or select which input channel(s) that I will record from? Can I record more than one channel at a time, and record multi tracks?

I can't seem to get GarageBand to recognize my Behringer X1222 USB Mixer. It will record, but only on the generic "USB Input, without seeing or letting me select the input channel from the mixer. Can't find any drivers from Behringer. How do I getGB to "see" the mixer? Thanks, I'm a newbie to Macs in genreal, and recording...

the x1222 includes a 2 channel audio interface, 2 channels are all you can get from it.
the most you can do is record to 2 tracks at a time; skim this tute to see how:

  • Recording more than one track at a time...

    Ok, so heres my problem.
This is going to be my future setup...
    for recording drums of course.
so I'm going to have around 6 microphones. A mixer, and i already have an interface. And of course i use soundtrack pro.
so if the microphones are all plugged into the mixer, and the mixer into the interface and the interface into the computer... wouldn't all the 6 microphones be one track on soundtrack pro? i mean... you can only do so much editing on a mixer. It would be very nice if i could edit every single mic separately.
    so in conclusion...
i want to record 6 tracks all at the same time with every single track a different microphone.
if that is not possible, could somebody maybe tell me how i could do something relatively close to that.
    thank you.

You have to set each track to a unique channel. Open track info and select Channel 1 for one of the tracks, and Channel 2 for the other.

  • Is there anyway to record more than one track at a time on garageband for ipad?

Just wondering if that is possible or in the works?

GarageBand for iPad only allows to record on one track at a time. That is the selcted one that turns into the Instrument View where the actual recording is done.
If multi-track recording is in the works, nobody know except Apple and they won't usually pre-announce that kind a things. My guess, it will not be implemented.
    Hope that helps
