Can't recover backup files off of external hard drive. HELP!!! :(

Recently I had to restore my laptop to its factory settings. Before doing this I made a backup on my "2TB WD My Book Essential External Hard Drive", using a suggested back up program simply titled "Back Up Files". The file it made on it is called "MINWINPC" and it has 2 folders in it that are titled "backup Files 2011-12-08-042146" and "Backup Files 2011-12-08-051659". The second one is the only one with anything in it an application titled "Backup.1.exe".
here are the details of "Backup.1.exe":
File description: RestoreWiz Application
Type: Application
File version: 8.0.92.0
Product name: RestorWiz
Product version: 8.0.92.0
Copyright: Solft Thinks Copyright (C) 2008
Size: 2.93 MB
Date modified: 12/8/2011 5:17AM
WhenIi click on the "Backup.1" application it opens up recovery manager. It asks me what files I want to restore and where I want to restore my backup.
I choose OS( C: ). It then tells me the location my files will be restored to, C:\System Recovery files.
Then it starts scanning for files to restore. This lasts a minute or 2 before an error message pops up.
"Runtime error! program: G:\MINWINPC\backup.1.exe
This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual .
Please contact the application's support team for more information."
I click ok to have another message from Microsoft windows pop up that says
"RestoreWiz Application has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? I would really like to get my backed up files back onto my computer

Can Time Machine back up files that are stored on external hard drive and save them on a different external hard drive?
I have my pictures stored on an external hard drive connected to my iMac. I want to make an exact copy of the pictures folder on a separate external hard drive. Can Time Machine do that?
    If yes, how?
If no, what's a good way to create a mirror of the folder on External Hard Drive #1 (the original) on External Hard Drive #2 (the backup)?
I am not opposed to manually copying every couple weeks or month, but (1) it's less convenient and (2) I got an error message the first time I tried this saying the files couldn't be copied because some of the files being copied had the same name as each other (not exactly that, I'm at work and don't have the message in front of me right now, but that was the gist of it).
    Thanks!

    1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.

  • Can't open iMovie files off of external hard drive?

The hard drive is the My Passport for Mac. I've backed up my hard drive on it and that worked and I can open other types of files off of it? I moved the files to it in finder. The hard drive shows up in iMovie as a folder but it is empty. Does anyone know why they aren't working?

For a drive to work with iMovie, it must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). You can format using Disk Utility, but reformatting will erase anything that is currently on the drive.
The My Passport drives are slow and bus powered, if I recall correctly, so the performance will not be great either.
Also, you should move all your projects and events back where they wer, and then do the moves from within iMovie so you do not lose your work.

I have an iMac purchased in May 2011.  OSX Lion 10.7.3.  I deleted backup file from the external hard drive which operates from Time Machine.
Now, the trash can will not empty some of the files deleted from the backup harddrive.
The trash contains-- File folder: "Core Services" which contains a locked file: "boot.efi".
    It will not delete.
How do I get the trash can empty of these files?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.

  • HT201250 Is there a possibility to recover erased files from an external hard drive that was reformatted by the Time Machine?

Is there a possibility to recover erased files from an external hard drive that was reformatted by the Time Machine?

    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location.  OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone.  Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.

    Luis,
Just to clarify one point…in order for Streamclip to convert the MTS I believe a plug-in like the AVCCAM QuickTime importer from Panasonic needs to be installed. (Credit David McClain over at the FCS boards for that info.)

  • Can airport extreme backup to non-Apple external hard drive?

Can airport extreme backup to non-Apple external hard drive?

Apple does not make external HDDs so you will most likely be using a non-Apple drive for backups.
However, I want to understand your question. Are you asking can you connect an external HDD to an AirPort Extreme for Time Machine backups? If so, Apple does NOT support this feature and I would recommend against it.

  • How can I transfer files off an external hard drive formatted for windows?

I just bought my first mac (yay!) and am trying to transfer my files off of my old pc.  The problem is that I stored all my personal files on an external hard drive, which is of course formatted for windows.  My mac will open it, but it is "read only."  I tried plugging it back into my pc and using the Migration Assistant to transfer my files over, but it was not detected (rest of the pc was).
However, the second time I tried plugging it in to my pc, it told me it would need to be formatted first.  Obviously my mac has changed something on it, and now all my personal files are on a hard drive that is unusable by either my old pc or my new mac!
Any suggestions would be appreciated!  Heads up though, I am not especially computer literate, and my pc needs to stay intact as the husband needs it and some of the programs on it for school.  Also, I have a second external hard drive that is brand new with nothing on it, if that will come in handy.
    Thanks!

Format the extra HDD to EXFAT as previously indicated.  There are two ways that can use to transferr the data.
    1.  Connect both drives to the PC and the copy the files to the newly formatted (EXFAT) drive from the HDD with the data .  Then connect the EXFAT drive to the MBP and transfer the data to same.
    2.  Connect both drives to the MBP and open DISK UTILITY>RESTORE.  Drag the drive with the data on it to the 'Source' field.  Drag the EXFAT drive to the 'Destination' field.  Click on the 'Restore' butt is on.  After the transfer has been completed, close DISK UTILITY and place the data on the MBP where you want it.
    Ciao.

  • Mac-format to PC-format: How can I get my music off an external hard drive?

I had a mac-formatted iPod for years, and all of my music is on an external hard drive that is hooked up to that computer. When I got a new iPod after mine was stolen, I had to get a PC-formatted iPod. How can I get my music off of the hard drive and onto my PC (and eventually my iPod)? I tried uploading the files into my iTunes account on the Mac, but they don't show up in my account on the PC. Most of the music are CDs that I copied onto my computer years ago, and had on my old iPod. Help!

Your Firefox profile would have the data. You can find it at:
    *C:\Users\<Windows login/user name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder>
**The file you want is called ''places.sqlite''
You can copy that file if you want to restore your bookmarks to your current Firefox by going back to ''C:\Users\<Windows login/user name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder>'' and overwriting the current file. Keep in mind, doing this will erase your current bookmarks.

  • Why Can't I Copy Files from an External Hard Drive or SD Card?

Major problem here... Why when I try copying files from an external hard drive or an SD card onto my internal iMac hard drive, it doesn't work?  The status bar that pops up, shows that it completes the transfer of the files to 100%; however, when it does in fact finish, the files actually do not appear on my hard drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  This is one of many problems I have been finding with OS X Lion and am very much on the verge of going back to Snow Leopard.
    Thank you.

Have u tried the usual? Safe boot. Delete finder plist files? etc. And the drives are formatted for mac yes?

  • Can I get my bookmarks off an external hard drive that I use as a backup? I have Windows 7 Home Edition Premium.

I have been backing up my computer with Windows 7 Home Premium onto an external hard drive. I have been using manual backup when I hook up the external hard drive. I've tried looking for the Firefox folder but can't seem to find it. Was it saved with all the other files and folders and if so how do I access it?

  • I can't delete any files from my external hard drives since I tried to delete backups. I can't return backups or delete anything now.

It started when I tried to delete back up files. It wouldn't let me delete them. Came up with "BootX" is locked, then "boot.efi" is locked. Holding down Option while emptying the trash didn't do anything. It wouldn't let me put them back in Backups.backupdb so I just left them in the trash.
But now I can't delete any files from either of my external hard drives. please help!

  • Why can't I copy files from my external hard drive - error code -50.

I sm trying to back up an external hard drive to a network drive. Some files copy but not all;.  SOmetimes a folder seems to have copied but then I see that most of the files inside have not.  And sometimes I just get 'An unexpected error has occurred'.  Error code - 50.
I need to have a back up copy of the files on this hard drive.  How can I stop this happening and copy files properly and securely?
The external hard drive is a LaCie bought from Apple, share formatted FAT32.
The network drive is a WD MyBookLIve Duo which WD tell me should work equally well with any operating system.
Please advise.  I need to archive a security copy of this data urgently
