Can't reinstall iCal

I'm in the middle of a lot of iCal syncing drama, and I thought the 10.5.3 was going to be the miracle fix to a problem that's been going on for months. I could actually see my calendars once I installed 10.5.3, but they weren't synching properly. So, I deleted all iCal-related files, and following the advice of someone earlier, I deleted the iCal application itself. Now, I can't reinstall it from the system disk!
When I try, iCal is greyed out. (In other words, I see it as a choice, but I can't click on it.) Here's what I'm doing:
Inserting Install Disk 1
Open the Optional Installs folder, then the .mpkg installer itself
Click through the permissions until I get to the Custom Install menu
Click the triangle besides Applications to reveal the choices there.
Here's where it's weird to me. I can click every choice there EXCEPT for iCal. Address Book, Safari, iTunes, and all of the others I can click on. But, iCal is visible there as choice, but it's not active. I can't select it and continue the reinstallation.
Am I missing something obvious?

Lee,
Click through the permissions until I get to the Custom Install menu
You should not see permissions choices if you are trying to reinstall iCal using an Admin account.
Since you specifically mentioned "Click through the permissions," I suspect that may be trying to reinstall ICal using a Standard account.
These are the install windows that you should see:
Welcome to the Optional Installs Installer-Continue
Software License Agreement-Continue
Custom Installs on "Macintosh HD" This is where you should be able to select iCal
+Administrator: An administrator account user can create, delete, and modify accounts, install software, and change system settings. Since administrators have such broad access, you should limit the number of administrator accounts created.+
+Standard: Standard account users cannot administer other accounts, but can install software for their own use and change settings related to their accounts.+
So, I deleted all iCal-related files.
Do you have any backups?
following the advice of someone earlier, I deleted the iCal application itself.
FWIW, I do not consider that good advice. I would rather use an Archive and Install.

First, be certain you really lost it by using spotlight to search for it.
If you need to re-install, it should be re-installable using the 10.6 DVD and doing Optional Installs, which offers to re-install Applications bundled with Mac OS X 10.6 (one at a time if you check the checkboxes).

  • Can't reinstall iCal on MacBook Air

my iCal had a meltdown. it stopped working - wouldn't allow me to add new calendars; wouldn't allow me to import a calendar from another Mac. I have the official MacBook Air install discs that came with the computer when I bought it from the Apple Store. I have the external DVD drive. I try to install iCal and it won't let me. I can't click on the "applications" box when I open the optional install package. I then used Pacifist, and installed iCal. now it won't open - I get the lovely "you can't use this version of iCal with this version of Mac OS." and the totally annoying thing is that it's the version from the MacBook Air install disc that came with the computer. and there doesn't seem to be any update anywhere on the Apple website. and I've run Software Update and it says everything is up to date. the iCal is 3.0.6 and my Mac OS is 10.6.3
I restarted the computer from the external DVD and ran Repair Disc from Disc Utility. I've repaired permissions. I've restarted several times. I'm at a complete loss, and it's really really annoying.
this reminds me of having my first IBM PC with 2 disc drives and 256k and how annoying that all was.
    what now?

iDVD has been discontinued by Apple and is no longer being offered.  You can purchase a copy of the boxed iLife 11 disc here: Amazon.com: iLife 11

I tried to restart my computer with command R and got the install option.

Will the install but install a replacement app retaining my current contacts and ical calendars?
    Good to know
Your settings and data should all be untouched when you reinstall, but as I say, all you need is a power outage or something unexpexted to occur and you may lose all your data, so having a backup is essential, even if it takes a bit of time it is invaluable insurance 'just in case'.

  • How can I reinstall just iCal?

I need to delete & reinstall iCal. I've lost all of my calander information as far as I can see & just need to start over. How can I do this? I had Tiger (10.4) installed, then installed the Leopard upgrade. Then I needed to reinstall the Tiger OS for work. So now I have Mac OS X 10.4.11 with 2 different system backups & all I want is for my iCal to work! If anyone can help me in getting my information from those backups that would be great, too. I've managed to get most of the music, keychains, but not documents.

An updater may not be replacing an entire application, so if you need to replace an application then you need to first get it from the installer DVD from which it came originally. Then use the updater to assure that it is the current version. You may not need to use the combo updater if the application hasn't changed any, but you can't know that positively, so use the updater. It cannot harm anything.

  • How can I reinstall crashed iCal without the Boot Disks?

I crashed iCal the other day by adding too much text into the event details field.  How do I fix the program, or how do I re-install a fresh version of it?  I have a MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.3
I also don't have any boot disks for the operating system (which is what the internet suggested using to re-install iCal off of).
Here is the error message I got:
    >>    The server responded with an error.
[Then with the text that I was trying to add underneith it]
The text reaches past the screen, and I can't move the window to see what it says at the bottom.

    Greetings,
This doesn't sound like an error with the iCal application but with the data you have in it.
Lion (10.7) does not come on a disk. It is available via download (if you purchased it in the Mac App Store or if your computer came with Lion preinstalled) or as a USB thumbdrive you buy from Apple.
For this issue I would suggest:
    Quit iCal
Click anywhere on the desktop and then click on the "Go" menu at the top of the computer screen while holding down the "option" key on the keyboard.  You will see "Library" in the menu. Click on it.
Click once on the folder called "Calendars" to highlight it.
Go to File > Duplicate (this makes a backup as you can't use iCal currently).
Once the duplication is complete, remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)NOTE: To get to "Home > Library" in Lion: Click anywhere on the desktop and then click on the "Go" menu at the top of the computer screen while holding down the "option" key on the keyboard.  You will see "Library" in the menu.
    Launch iCal and test.
    If the issue persists:
    1. Go to iCal > Quit iCal
    2. Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove them all.)
--- NOTE: Removing these files may remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
    3. Launch iCal and test.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can't open iCal

I recently had to revert back to OS X 10.4.11 from OS X 10.5.4, because of issues involving third party music apps, and now I can't get iCal to open at all. I've read the messages about crashes, with the suggestions to empty the Sources folder and to refresh the iCal plist file. I tried deleting the contents of the Sources folder, and that didn't help. I found that there was no iCal plist file in my Preferences folder. I tried dragging the one from my backup and that didn't help. Ical just won't open. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Never mind. I also tried reinstalling iCal from the DVD, but it wasn't overwriting the newer version (3.01) from OS X 10.5.4. When I trashed that version, the older version (2.0) was installed and then opened right up.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Reinstalled iCal will not start

    Hello,
I was having problems adding new events and deleting some old calendars in iCal so like an idiot I nuked it and reinstalled iCal(from the OSX DVD), figuring I can just resync from MobileMe. Now however I can't even start the program. I get the following error and when I click OK the program exits.
"The file could not be saved because you do not have appropriate access privileges.
To view or change access privileges, select the item in Finder and choose File > Get Info."
    Any ideas? Thanks!
P.S. I have run repair permissions. I also edited the permissions to include my account for read/write for all files in the package.
    Message was edited by: petteriusa

    petteriusa,
I also edited the permissions to include my account for read/write for all files in the package.
I suspect that editing the permissions in the package is the root of the current problem. I would not recommend changing the permissions in a package.
You should also refresh the iCal .plist file. Navigate to your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder, and find the com.apple.iCal.plist file. Drag that file to your Desktop, log out/in or restart and try to open iCal.
FWIW the permissions on my iCal Application package are:
    system: Read & Write
    admin: Read & Write
    everyone: Read Only
The permissions for my Macintosh HD/Users/Library/Calendars Folder are:
    username (Me): Read & Write
    staff: Read only
    everyone: Read only
Can you match the setting that I have listed?
It is my gut feeling that iCal will work in another user account. Let us know what happens when you try iCal in another user account.

  • Reinstall iCal from disc

My iCal is fatally corrupt. Will not operate even in a new user account. All attempts to fix it have failed. I need to reinstall iCal from the original disc. How do I do this? I put disc one in and couldn't find any menus to lead me to installing just iCal.

    James,
iCal 1.5.5 for Panther is not on the Panther installation disk and can be obtained by direct download.
    Good Luck.

  • Reinstall iCal?

This is one of the topics I revisit every now and then to see if a feasible solution has yet been discovered. For whatever reason, I had unfrotunately deleted iCal from my machine about a year ago and could not find a sufficient way to reinstall it - only it. My OS install disk is OS 10.3.7. It seems you can't choose to just install iCal, like you can form a 10.4 disk. So I'm back, wondering if anyone has discovered a way to reinstall iCal in my particular situation. Is there a download on Apple's site or a cd I could purchase to install from? I think Apple would tell me to buy iLife, but I don't need or want to use every app it ships with.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Mr.Rockets,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Click on this link to find ICal 1.5.5 which is the iCal version that is compatible with OS X 10.3.9 Panther.
If you are using 10.4, and do not have the Tiger installation disk you will not be able to install or download a copy of iCal 2.x.x.

  • My iTunes library is missing since upgrade Lion 7.2.  I have it all backed up so that's not the issue. How can I reinstall it with all my hundreds of playlists intact or do I have to recreate each one upon reinstalling the backup copy? Thank you for help

Almost my iTunes library is missing since upgrade Lion 7.2. (the last 2.5 weeks worth of added music has transferred post-upgrade, none of whcih was bought from iTunes)
I have it all backed up so that's not the issue. How can I reinstall it with all my hundreds of playlists intact or do I have to recreate each playlist upon reinstalling the backup copy? This would save a HUGE amount of time and efforts. Thank you for your help!

    hi Limnos,
I do not mean the entire ITunes folder but, rather, the contents of the ITunes folder prior to September 29th.  (90% of the media is missing, along with all playlists)  The media that remains says it was added on 9/29 although I know most of it was added many months or even years earlier. There are no playlists listed at all, before or after 9/29.  (I know for certain that I added non-iTunes purchased songs on 10/6 although I had not created playlists for them)
I have my iTunes folder backed up on both an external drive as well as Time Machine.
I run iTunes off of an ITunes folder on my computer rather than from the external, if that's what you mean about how I have it set up.
Is it OK to drag the entire iTunes folder from the external drive onto my laptop's drive and see if that fixes it?
    Thank you for your help!

  • Upgraded to snow leopard, now browsing SLOW can I reinstall?

I wasn't having any real problems with Leopard, but when Chrome stopped updating flash for it, I decided what the heck, I'll upgrade (against my better judgement).
So, I ordered my Snow Leopard disk directly from apple.  Backed up my Mac with Carbonite. Then installed SL on my Mac.  At one point it hung up, but after I eventually decided to shut off the computer and restart it, everything appeared fine. I also ran all the updates so my safari is 5.1.7 and my SL is 10.6.8.
Here is my system info: (I  replaced the s/n with the ****)
    Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac8,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.8 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          6 MB
      Memory:          2 GB
      Bus Speed:          1.07 GHz
      Boot ROM Version:          IM81.00C1.B00
      SMC Version (system):          1.30f1
      Serial Number (system): ************
      Hardware UUID:          *************
Browsing has become horribly slow.  I'm always getting the beach ball, and it Chrome and Safari keep becoming nonresponsive.  I didn't realize I was supposed to do a REPAIR DISK BEFORE my upgrade.  I have run REPAIR DISK several times now. I heard that there were a handful of items that would repeatedly show up as needing to be repaired, even though they are actually ok, BUT I just ran a repair disk AGAIN and there must have been 150 line items to repair.  It said it would take 39 minutes. But it actually took about 15.
I realized that "rosetta" was not selected when I installed (but I don't run any windows programs anyway).  Also, once when I got hung up in Safari, I was in the Zynga gaming site and multiple windows started showing up telling me to run in 32 bit mode. I tried changing to 32 bit (even though it didn't seem to make sense because I'm not running anything that would require  32 bit) but it made no difference.  I've since returned it to 64.
So I'm wondering, Can I REINSTALL Snow Leopard?  Since I've done a repair disk again, can I just stick the disk in and try to install like normal? Do I have to back anything off?  I've had my Mac for years, but NEVER had any problems with it, and never had to upgrade so this is new to me.  (I was used to Microsoft before, that caused me problems CONSTANTLY, especially needing to upgrade constantly.
BTW, I don't have a LOT of different docs stored on my Mac, just a ton of pictures (which was my reason for needing to make sure it was all backed up).
Thanks for any help. I really appreciate it.  I would like to be able to browse without having to FORCE QUIT every 10 minutes.

I've done multiple safari resets.  I've also repaired permissions multiple times.  So here's what I've done. I did another disk permission repair, then put the snow leopard disk back in and ran the install again.  It acted a little odd, for example in the middle of the install the computer shut down and started up again on its own.  I just left it.  Then, it seemed to be stuck on 1 minute left for a solid 20 minutes, but eventually I got messages that it finished. Then, after doing a repair again I noticed safari was reset back to 4.0, so I ran all the other upgrades. Did repairs between each.
I also noticed that Flash player wasn't upgraded to current, so I did that.
So safari wants to take a while to open now when I click it.  I usually get a beach ball.  Also happening with Chrome.
I play 2 games on Zynga, and have since discovered that I can't play one of them (rubyblast) anymore because it the brower (doesn't matter if its firefox, chrome or safari) lags.
Is there some way for me to see how much memory these games require, and if that could be my problem?  I honestly don't know much about Mac memory.  I don't have many applications installed except for what came iwth my computer 4 years ago.  I do have a HUGE number of pictures on my mac though (and since iphoto duplicates those pictures, I have nearly double).
Am I missing something?  I didn't want to upgrade from Leopard because my Mac ran just fine. I only did so because Chrome dropped support for it.  I like using chrome occasionally.
If someone can help I'd appreciate it. I have 3 days left on a carbonite trial (which isn't enough time to restore my Mac if I need to) so I'd like to think I'm just missing a common thing.
