If the problems were caused by your data. But that's extremely unlikely. It may have been an app, or, much more likely from your description, something corrupted in the Leopard OS. That's one of the problems with upgrading a sick system without knowing what or where the causes are. It's a bit like a brain surgeon operating on himself: if he isn't in tip-top shape to start with, his condition is likely to change, and not for the better.
Most of us would have recommended first simply doing a +*Repair Disk+* on your internal HD; if that didn't help, installing the "combo" Leopard update; if that didn't work, doing an +Archive and Install+ and re-installing the "combo."
After a clean re-install of Snow Leopard, my Mac worked fine again (except for the TM trouble). So it probably had something to do with my old files.
Probably not. Much more likely OSX was somehow damaged. And you got a whole new one.
How come I could read the files on my external HD and yet not be able to copy the files?
Time Machine uses special "deny everybody everything" permissions on it's backups, among other things, in an attempt to keep us mere mortals from moving, changing, or deleting things and corrupting them.

There is no way to "convert" Safari into Windows.   And very unlikely for a hacker to get into a Mac.
But, ok, your system is all messed-up somehow.
First, what version of OSX is on your Mac?  If you don't know, click the Apple icon at the upper-left of the screen and select About This Mac.  You'll see a display like this:
    We need the Version number.
Second question: do you have backups made with Time Machine (on an external HD or the like) that you want to restore, or do you want to start your Mac over fresh, the way it came from the factory?
p.s. i dont have the disc it came with , my daughter set it up for me to get started !
You may need that, depending on what version of OSX you're running, to restore the backups or start fresh.
You really should have a copy of the original disc, as there's an Apple Hardware Test on it, tailored to the hardware on that Mac. You'll need it it there's ever a problem.  If your daughter can't send it,  call AppleCare (800-275-2273),and  give them your serial number -- they can send you a replacement for a nominal fee.
Sorry, but it's late here, and I'm going to bed, but will be back tomorrow.

Apparently I allowed iCloud to delete all of my calendar and reminder information from my Mac.
Can I restore it from iCloud, if not can I restore it from Time Machine?

It sounds as though it's not in iCloud anymore.
You may find that restoring from Time Machine results in the information simply disappearing again. You might try this: disable iCloud syncing, restore from Time Machine, re-enable syncing and choose the merge option when presented.

If you don't know what they are, you'll need to go the printer manufacturer's website and check the drivers for your printer. It will then be far the easiest thing just to download them from there.

How can I exclude mail from Time Machine backups?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Mails are stored on ~/Library/Mail, being ~ your user folder. As you are running Snow Leopard, it's easy to exclude your mails from your Time Machine backup.
Open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and add ~/Library/Mail to excluded items, so the next backup won't include mails. Note that you have to go to your user folder, in order to access to this directory

I just did a master erase on my MacBook Air 2010.  Genius bar helped me.  The only thing that didn't get reinstalled from Time Machine was my address book. How do I get my contacts back?  Please help!

    Try this:
Open address book and then launch Time Machine (making sure Address Book is still the active window). You should be able to navigate through time IN the address book window and once you find the correct time there will be an option that says "Restore All".

  • Restoring iTunes from Time Machine and external HD

    Hi there,
I've done some searching and i haven't been able to find the answer to this problem. I am wondering if someone can help me with this.
My HD was faulty so i had it replaced.  my complete 300gb music library was backed up on an external HD. The iTunes program was running on my local HD. So i ran the local iTunes off of my ext. HD.
Now that i have a new HD and i restored everything from Time Machine, for some reason all my playlists and songs have been emptied from the new iTunes.
I am trying to restore it to its original state instead of readding everything from the external HD and trying to remember all the playlists.  (and that doesn't work either as it comes up with errors.)
I have looked for the plist and or old .itl or.xml but nothing shows up.
    Any ideas?

  • Reinstall Mail from Time Machine??

Last week, I found one of my cat sitting on my opening laptop.  When I pushed her off, my mail program was all messed up.  Now random things go to spam.  One of my email accounts does sync anymore and keeps asking me for my password.  I have lost full folders from multiple accounts.  It is a mess.  How can I reinstall just the Mail app from Time Machine from a week ago??
    I am using
    Mail Version 8.2 (2070.6)
    OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.2
    I have a MacBook Pro
    Please Help

Time Machine backups can be restored from OSX's Recovery Partition. However, restoring from a Time Machine backup from a week ago will mean that your computer will be exactly as it was a week ago, so store any new and important documents on a flash drive/cloud storage service so you don't lose them. Once you have done this, do the following:
Turn up your computer's volume, and make sure it is not muted.
Reboot your computer, and when you hear the "Ding", hold down Command + R until the Apple logo and progress bar appear.
Wait for it to load. It may take a while.
Once it does, you should see a screen that says "OSX Utilities". Connect the drive with your Time Machine backups now.
Click the option that says "Restore from Time Machine Backup" and then click "Continue".
Do everything it tells you to do, and select the backup from a week ago.
Once finished, restore the important documents from the flash drive/cloud storage service
Hope it helps! Reply if you need further help and if you have any questions!

  • Restore iTunes from Time Machine

Thanks, in advance, for any help.
I keep my iTunes/iTunes Music folder on an external HD.
I want to restore a previous version from Time Machine but the error message is that there isn't enough room on the external drive to do the restore.
I could trash some music in order to make room on the external drive but that seems a bit scary.  Is that a dangerous strategy?
An alternative could be to get a new larger external drive.
But, is it possible to do an  iTunes/iTunes Music folder restore from Time Machine to a new empty external HD?
I'd prefer not to buy a new drive so if Option 1 (trash some content and restore from Time Machine) is safe, that would be great.
Option 2 - can a restore from Time Machine be executed to a new, empty external HD?
If both are possible, which is preferable?
    What say ye enlightened folks?

  • Can't restore folders from Time Machine after Lion

    Hello guys,
after upgrading to Lion 10.7.1 I can't seem able to restore some old folders from Time Machine
Here's what happens: I log in TM, I can scroll through my old backups, I can choose the folders I want to restore, I can click on the folder, but when the systems tries to restore it, it stops saying that I don't have the privileges to access file A in the folder (and then all the procedure is stopped).
Oddly (at least for me) if I try to restore just that same file A (and not the whole folder) that I should have no privileges for, from the same old backup, I can do it, but I have to give the system my password: It pops up a window saying something "Finder is willing to make some modification, can you authorize?"  (forgive i'm translating the alert from another language) and then I can restore it.
Has anybody else this problem and how can be solved?
    Many thanks
Ps: I did a simple upgrade on Lion, no partition, no blank disk, and never changed anything in my user preferences, it's always the same, administrator
Pps: Before Lion I could restore easily exactly the same folders and files I tried to restore with Lion

  • Can't restore files from Time machine backup?

I kinda successfully restored my files from Time Machine after a clean re-install of Snow Leopard (Time Machine thought they were new files, though, so backed up the 26 GB... waste of space), but now I'm trying to restore the files of the other user on the computer. In her pictures folder, I can't copy the iPhoto Library because I don't have permission to access it! The same problem occurred on my account too, but I was able to go to my Time Machine drive and manually change the permissions for the files I wanted, which doesn't work on her account.
I have made a Youtube video of the error:

Can anyone assist me in restoring the files? That's all I need help in. Thanks
