Can't reinstall Snow Leopard

I'm trying to reinstall SL on a computer before selling it. After inserting the original SL DVD and restarting and holding C or option and then selecting the DVD to boot from, the computer just habgs at a grey screen with a grey apple. Any idea how to get around this?

HI John,
screen grays out and it tells me, in a variety of languages, I need to restart.
Otherwise known as a kernel panic meaning there is something wrong. Either bad RAM (memory), outdated drivers, corrupted hard disk...

I am a new apple user
It's a time consuming process and since you are new to Mac, it could be frustrating.
if it were me, I'd take the MBPro back and ask for a refund.
Best bet is to buy a refurbished Mac from Apple so you have a one year limited warranty.

    How can I reinstall Snow Leopard?

    Jan,
    You can use the Disk Utility "app" to partition your hard drive so that you can (clean) install Snow Leopard on the new partition. This leaves Mountain Lion intact on one partition. This worked great for me. I was becoming increasingly annoyed, seeing that Mountain Lion ***** due, as another poster said, to its "increasing iOSification".
    With Disk Utility you can name the new partition "Macintosh HD 2". Be sure to use the exact same format as the original (Macintosh HD) partition. You can access all your files/apps on the old (ML) partition from the new (SL) partition, and vice versa.
    However, know this:
    I still have NOT found a way to transfer any my OS X Mail folders from Mountain Lion BACK TO Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion's Mail gives you the false impression you can export your Mail folders to Snow Leopard's Mail, but you cannot. From what I've read here, the newest version of OS X Mail is not compatible with earlier versions. This is a HUGE problem.
    My short list (to date) of crappy Mountain Lion behavior; items marked with a double asterisk (**)represent the worst of Mountain Lion for me.
    ** No up/down arrows in scroll bar slider;
    Expose` not as easy to navigate as in Snow Leopard;
    Mail does not request passwords for either receive or send;
    No "Save Draft" icon in Mail compose window;
    "Save As" selection missing in most app menus;
    No separate Search window in Safari (workaround: use Firefox or Opera);
    ** Can't export Mail from Mountain Lion into Snow Leopard if downgrading;
    iWork 09 seems to have "circled the wagons" re compatibility with MS Office or LibreOffice (workaround: just use Libreoffice);
    I truly regret "upgrading" to Apple's "Vista".

  • I can't reinstall Snow Leopard iLife programs

    I just reinstalled Snow Leopard on my Mac mini using the disc that came with my computer.  When I tried to install the iLife programs the install failed and the install window said call Apple.  The discs came out of their envelopes for the first time tonight.  What gives?

    Tracy,
    You say you installed SL, your profile says Mavericks, a little confusing there.
    Did you purchase from Apple or Amazon?
    If you installed SL you would need iLife '11 (oild version) for Mavericks you would need the the iLife '11 (new version)
    Maybe there was a mix up on that.
    Call Apple customer service as the message said and find out what the desl is.

  • Can I reinstall Snow Leopard while having Lion OSX removed?

    I have a question which relates to Windows Home Server (HP MediaSmart EX 490 with Mac support for Time Machine).
    I bought my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard and worked the updates all the way up to 10.6.7 or 10.6.8 (can't recall which) before testing out the developer version of OS X Lion.  I now realize that Lion makes the WHS Time Machine backup functionality null and void.  Is there a way I can roll back the OS?  Should I use a Bare Metal reinstall?  I am very afraid that I might lose my data on my MBP if I do a Bare Metal restore.  I am not an experienced Mac user and any expert help would be greatly appreciated.
    (Also, how will I re-update Snow Leopard to the latest version?  Should I just buy the latest OS DVD from an Apple Store?)
    Thanks in advance,
    markerline

    If your NAS doesn't work with Lion, contact the maker for an update.
    You should have access to the Developer forums; someone there should be able to help.
    You should be able to do a full system restore of your last Snow Leopard backup, per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions, if your NAS allows full restores (some don't).   That will, of course, erase any data you've added or changes you've made since then.  You might be able to selectively restore such items via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 in that same link, but the Snow Leopard version of some apps may not work with the Lion data formats.

  • How can I reinstall snow leopard over Lion OS

    Ever since I installed Lion OS, my Imac has been absolutely uncontrollable.  Programs opening upon start up that shouldn't open, lock ups, freezing system.  How can I uninstall Lion and reinstall my Snow Leopard?

    You have to quit, not just closing open documents, the programs when you shutdown or they will Resume, by default, when you startup.
    The feature can be disabled here by unchecking:

  • Can't reinstall Snow Leopard on new MacBook Pro

    I had a old Macbook pro running Snow Leopard that died. I used Time Machine to restore to my brand new MacBook Pro. I decided to do an Archive and Install to start with a fresh system even though the new machine is working fine. The install disk is an early Snow Leopard release which loads fine, but when I run the install or try to restart from it, I get the Apple icon, but it never shifts to the installation process (nor can I check with Disk Utiity). Any suggestions?

    There is no Archive & Install option for Snow Leopard. Instead, its installer offers a single "no brainer" option that replaces the existing OS (if there is one) with a fresh copy of Snow Leopard & leaves your existing user settings, documents, etc. untouched (if there are any). You can think of it sort of like doing an Archive & Install with an automatic reintegration of your user stuff from the archive, except that there is no archive & no Previous System folder full of now useless junk that you can't use with the new OS anyway. It automatically moves some known-incompatible software to an "Incompatible Software" folder (go figure!) at the root of the HD, automatically installs or skips certain items depending what is already on the HD (if there is anything on it to begin with), & does several other things that the old installer was too dumb to be able to do without a lot of tedious human help.
    If you want to do an erase & install (which isn't usually necessary or desirable if you want to take advantage of all the advanced features of the new installer) you can do that too, but you must take the extra step of going to the Utilities menu, choosing Disk Utility from it, & using its Erase function to erase the volume before installing Snow Leopard on it.
    Basically, it is as close to a "one button" installer as Apple can make it & far more sophisticated than any previous installer.

  • I can't boot my MBP or reinstall snow leopard

    I have an old 2005 MBP (non unibody) using snow leopard. I urgently need to get it running again since it stopped booting up last feb 2012 and I haven't used it since as I'm using a desktop now. When I turn it on I get no chime and the screen goes grey with an alternating apple logo, and a no entry sign, and occasionally a folder with a question mark on it. When I insert snow leopard and reboot it allows me to select language, and the home screen comes up with the option to reinstall the OS. I have also been to the utilities>disk utilities and tried verifying and then repairing the HD. When verifying it says my drive appears to be ok, and when repairing it appears to have not fixed anything. I've then quitter DU and gone back to try re-installing snow leopard and although the progress bar estimates 30mins or so it takes hours, then gets to about 3/4 done and comes up with a failure message saying..
    Install Failed
    Mac OSX could not be installed on your computer
    The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail.
    Contact the manufacturer for assistance
    Click restart to restart your computer and try installing again
    I did have the installer log window open whilst trying this and the last line before the install failure message contains loads of stuff which means nothin to me but contained within this text is this "an error occurred while extracting files from the package " lexmark_laserdrivers.pkg". Underlying error=(error domain=BOMcopierfatalerror code=28....(loads more text after this..)
    Any help would be appreciated!!
    Thanks

    Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
    If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
    Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Can I back up computer with time machine on lion then reinstall snow leopard and restore from backup safely

    Can I back up computer with time machine on lion then reinstall snow leopard and restore from backup safely?

    If your machine came with Snow Leopard or earlier and you have your install disks, yes, you can reinstall SL. However, you will need to erase the entire hard drive so you will lose all your files. Also note that there are some apps (such as Mail) which can't be downgraded "automatically" such as with a restore from Time Machine. Here is some info on TM:

  • I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and foolishly upgraded to Yosemite.  Is it possible to go back in time with Time Machine and reinstall Snow Leopard.  Then upgrade to Lion or Mavericks?  Any other ideas on how I can exit Yosemite?

    I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and foolishly upgraded to Yosemite. Now have numerous problems.  Is it possible to go back in time with Time Machine and reinstall Snow Leopard?  Then upgrade to Lion or Mavericks?  Any other ideas on how I can exit Yosemite?

    Once you get yourself back to Snow Leopard, if you still want to upgrade somewhat, I would suggest the following:
    1. Get an external hard drive that you can use for experiments with new OS versions. You could partition it into 2 or 3 partitions. You could then clone your existing Snow Leopard system to one partition using Carbon Copy Cloner (well worth $40) or SuperDuper ($25).
    2. Buy OS X Mountain Lion for $20, through the Apple online store (I don't think it's available through the App Store). Apple has decided to make it very difficult for anyone to get Mavericks unless they have already downloaded it.
    You will receive two e-mails from Apple, one containing a PDF with a redemption code, and one with the password you will need to unlock the PDF. Using the code, you will download Mountain Lion from the App Store, where it will appear among your Purchased items.
    After ML finishes downloading, its installer app will launch itself. When you see this launch screen, QUIT the install app immediately! Go to your applications folder, find the Install OS X Mountain Lion app, and copy it to a safe location outside of your Applications folder. Keeping one or more copies will allow you to reinstall without unnecessary aggravation if you later need or want to do that. At this point, you can re-launch the Installer in the Applications folder and let it run. You can install it on a clean partition on your external HD, or you can allow it to upgrade the Snow Leopard clone you created on your external drive, or you can do both. This should allow you to test how everything works for as long as you like.
    3. If you left yourself a free partition on your test drive, try a clean install of Yosemite and set everything up from scratch (do not migrate anything). This will allow you to see whether your problems with it were related to something in your Snow Leopard system.

    Hi;
    how can i redownload snow leopard after reinstalling an old version of leopard from disks
    I have a mobileme account and an icloud account

    If you have Leopard installed, you can't download anything to get to Snow Leopard.
    In order to do that you must have a Snow Leopard DVD.

  • Can I delete maverick and reinstall snow leopard?

    Can I delete os maverick on MacBook Pro  and reinstall snow leopard?

    Yes you can. But in doing so you will need to wipe out the complete drive so you should first manually backup your user files to an external drive. That is copy all your personal files over to an external drive and not with Time Machine.

    Things have really changed.  I can't understand how Apple could release the Lion OS as buggy as it is ?  It's like reliving the nightmare of my PC days and the Microsoft crap !  Do I have to wipe the hardrive before reinstalling Snow Leopard ?  The amazing thing is that when I installed Snow Leopard not a hitch, ever !    My trust in Apple is gone and believe me I will think twice before doing anymore OS upgrades, **** I can go back to the PC for a lot less money.
