Can't reload backup files. Sparse bundle won't open

When my AirBook crashed I took it to the Apple Store.  There the contents of the hard drive were backed up to an external drive, and the AirBook sent for repairs.  During the repair process the OS was updated to Snow Leopard (I don't remember what the prior OS was).  Now, when I try to use Time Machine to restore the files from the external drive I find a disk image named dudley.sparsebundle (dudley is my middle name).  But when I double-click it, I get a message that the disk image can't be opened because "no mountable file systems" were found.  I've tried the repair disk and verify disk utility without success.  Can anyone help?

There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup; 10.7 or later), from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup; 10.7.2 or later), or from your installation disc (C key at startup; 10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.

3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

Can I remove backuped files/folders from Azure Backup storage without un-registor the servers ?
I want to remove some backuped files/folders to compact Azure Backup Storage and to save the cost of Azure Backup.
Scenario 1: remove tempolary files from Azure Backup Storage.
Scenario 2: remove no-recovery files from Azure Backup Storage.
Scenario 3: move the files from backup target folder to other storage's folder.
Now, To remove backup files/folder from Azure Backup storage, I seems to need un-register the servers, and register the server.

Thank you Giri, for quick reply.
I want to save the Azure Backup storage cost, now.
I don't want to pay the Azure Backup storage cost for no-restore-need files until the backup point gets aged.
and I don't want to remove / re-backup the restore need files by un-register/register operation.

  • Can't get free space after deleting a file-sparse bundle disk image

I have a 150 GB Sparse bundle Disk image with a 256 AES enc. I just deleted about 30 GB worth of tv shows to free up some space but the Disk Image is still the same size with no more free space on the virtual disk either. I know that with Filevault the user has to log out in order to recover free disk space but how does this work with a normal Sparse disk image? Thanks in advance!

IIRC, sparse images only grow as things are added, but do not shrink. Create a new one, mount the original, transfer your stuff from the original into the new one, and delete the original one.

  • How to access a TimeMachine Backup (non sparse bundle)

I have a TM backup on a QNAP device. What I see is a folder with the computer name. The next level is a folder bands and two files - Info.plist and Info.backup.
Neither TimeMachine nor the Migration Tool recognizes the backup. The backuped computer was accidently erased.
I'm desperately looking for a solution!

That IS a sparse bundle disk image.
The data (including the normal directory structure)  is spread over a huge number of 8 MB "band" files.
See the pink box in How Time Machine works its Magic for details.   It shows one on a Time Capsule;  the setup is the same on a NAS like your QNAP, but of course some of the names will be different.
As noted there, if you can mount and open the disk image inside the sparse bundle, you'll see your backups, as in the green box in the same link.
But if it's damaged, double-clicking it won't open it -- instead (after a few moments) you'll get an error message --  no recognizable file system, or unavailable, or the like.  I don't think there are any data recovery tools that can examine the bands and extract data files from them.

  • Can't find files - and now won't open

    Hello,
I removed some files from my computer, that iDVD is looking for from a previous project. Now, it won't open.
Is there anything I can do short of removing the program and reinstalling it?
Is there a way to tell iDVD & iMOVIE to open up and NOT look for the last project?
    Any help appreciated!
    Jeremy

Is there a way to tell iDVD & iMOVIE to open up and NOT look for the last project?
    Yes. Delete their preference files.
    Close both iMovie and iDVD.
Go to Home~Library~Preferences and delete the files called
    com.apple.imovie.plist
    com.apple.idvd.plist
They will be recreated next time you open the applications, but won't (can't!) remember what was your last project!

  • Can't restore backup files.

Not long ago my mbp HD broke and I had to change it. Now I am trying to restore some backup files from it but it seems that I have no permission to access those files therefore I cannot restore them. Is there a way I can access those files again?
NOTE: I have already tried to do cmd+i and convert the sharing options in read and write but didn't work.

More info following some more testing. It looks like it's actually worse than I thought. It appears as if iPhoto only transfers ONE copy of each photo from the DVD, NOT both the Original and Modified. Most of the time, it takes the Modified version. In the case of RAW photos, there will ALWAYS be a .jpg "processed" version of the Original RAW file in the "Modified" folder, so this is the one it always takes. In the case of .jpg files, it depends on whether you actually made any changes to the photo. If it is right out of the camera, there will be no version in Modified, and iPhoto will transfer the one in Originals. In all other cases, it takes the versions from Modified.
ALL the files are transfered to the Originals folder in your destination library, even though many of them were in Modifieds on the DVD.
The big downside of all this is that for ALL photos, JPG and RAW, you don't get the Original recovered. It stays on the DVD. This is a real bummer. Because of this, you cannot "reprocess RAW", or "Revert to Original", or tweak any previous adjustments and/or effects. It treats the "old" modified as if it were a fresh "original", with no changes.
iPhoto Library Manager is not much help. For RAWs ILM seems to prefer to transfer Originals, which at least preserves your RAWs, but you lose any mods.
There does NOT appear to be any way to transfer Modified AND Originals off the DVD within iPhoto...
This seems like a bug to me, though casual users would probably not recognize this as a pretty serious problem.
Perhaps there is some option/ secret keystroke, preference setting, etc. that can get it to work? Anybody out there have any suggestions?

  • Why does macbook air list 30 gigs of "backup" in storage and I can't find "backup" files?

I am trying to clear off my hard drive to take my 13 inch air (125 gb harddrive) and the "storage" dialog box says that more than 30 gigs of my HD is taken up by "backup."  What does this mean?  I can't find any files marked "backup."

  • Can't recover backup files off of external hard drive. HELP!!! :(

Recently I had to restore my laptop to its factory settings. Before doing this I made a backup on my "2TB WD My Book Essential External Hard Drive", using a suggested back up program simply titled "Back Up Files". The file it made on it is called "MINWINPC" and it has 2 folders in it that are titled "backup Files 2011-12-08-042146" and "Backup Files 2011-12-08-051659". The second one is the only one with anything in it an application titled "Backup.1.exe".
here are the details of "Backup.1.exe":
    File description: RestoreWiz Application
    Type: Application
    File version: 8.0.92.0
    Product name: RestorWiz
    Product version: 8.0.92.0
Copyright: Solft Thinks Copyright (C) 2008
    Size: 2.93 MB
    Date modified: 12/8/2011 5:17AM
WhenIi click on the "Backup.1" application it opens up recovery manager. It asks me what files I want to restore and where I want to restore my backup.
I choose OS( C: ). It then tells me the location my files will be restored to, C:\System Recovery files.
Then it starts scanning for files to restore. This lasts a minute or 2 before an error message pops up.
    "Runtime error! program: G:\MINWINPC\backup.1.exe
This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual .
Please contact the application's support team for more information."
I click ok to have another message from Microsoft windows pop up that says
"RestoreWiz Application has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? I would really like to get my backed up files back onto my computer

  • Word documents located in a sparse bundle will not open after update to Lion

I have several files of Word documents created by Office for Mac 2008. These files are located in two different sparse bundles for security. One sparse bundle is the original. The second sparse bundle is a larger maximum size that I copied the original Word documents into.  My plan was to delete the original after I confirmed that the second larger one worked.   After updating to Lion, I also uninstalled Office for Mac 2008, and installed Office for Mac 2011.  Now when I try to open these Word documents, I get a message saying that Word cannot not open these documents because they may be in use or may have unacceptable symbols in the file name.  If I control click on the documents, I can see the document in Preview but still cannot open in Word.  In addition, I am able to open Word documents that are on my desktop. I tried moving my folders out of the sparse bundles by copying them to the desktop but this did not work either.
Help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

ok i created a hello world app to try a nail down this issue.
i created the app with version 1.0.0
uploaded it to my server on the net.
hit the web address from my phone, downloaded and installed
then changed the version number to 1.0.1
    uploaded this apk
    downloaded and installed to phone
app would then open for sec then close
only fixable by clearing application cache.
I can't believe the answer to this problem is not available by googling it.
has no one else encountered this?
please help, i am scared to release any updates to my programs - massive influx of email from mad users who can not open there apps.

It sounds like Peter has it hand, but some possibilities are Preflight and SING; you can try disabling them both. What OS?
    What version of InDesign? 6.0.6?

Download a fresh copy of Firefox ( http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html ) and do a reinstall of Firefox on top of the current version.
If that still causes the same problem then do a clean reinstall and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.<br />
    Don't remove personal data when uninstalling.<br />
It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
