Where:  /Volumes/NO NAME/.Trashes/501
It would be useful to tell us more about "NO NAME". Is it an ext'l drive? A camera? A thumb drive or SD card? An MP3 player? How is it formatted? Was it used with Win or some other non-Mac device?
If it's an ext'l drive, it might be wise to verify it first with Disk Utility, just in case this strange name actually indicates directory corruption. If it's a camera or MP3 player, it might be better to attempt to remove it with the device's own file management facility.
As Mark Jalbert says, in the end—and depending on the file system—, it might come down to deleting it by its inode number, which is tricky; it might be easier to back up whatever files need backing up, and then reformatting it. It depends on what "NO NAME" is.

Can I remove files from my computer without removing them from iCloud?

Reason I'm asking: I did move a folder over, and then went to iCloud.com, and looked in that folder, and it said it was empty. Thanks
When you move a folder to iCloud Drive, it will upload the contents of this folder to iCloud Drive, but it may take a long tome, even for small items. You may see progress bars, while the contents is uploading.  And the folder may look empty, until it will be updated from iCloud.  For example - shortly after adding the folder "neueBilder" to iCloud Drive.

  • How can I remove files from the startup disk

I am getting a screen when I am trying to quit saying   the "MAC OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory"  by closing the windows and removing files from the startup disk will help.
    How do I do this?

That error message is misleading. Your problem is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory.
That can happen for two reasons:
You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
In the Activity Monitor application, select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the  Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The process named "Safari Web Content" renders web pages for Safari and other applications. It uses a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider it a prime suspect.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • How can I remove files that do not contain the number 1 or ~1?

I had to convert many .avi files.  The new names all contain ~1.  Those files I want to keep and remove the originals.  There are scripts to remove files with a numeral such as 1.  I need one to remove all files without the 1 or ~1.
I tried using a script that removed older files, but the new files seemed to have the same created dates and modified dates so that will just delete all the files.

Thanks for your input.  I want to keep the files with a 1 or ~1 as it happens and delete the rest.  I have written some scripts.  I think I could write a script to delete all files with a 1, but of course that is not what I want.  I guess
I need a script to delete all files except if they contain a 1.  I haven't used a forum since way back in the PC mag days.
Whoops..........I just realized exactly what you were telling me and used your suggestion.  I guess I was trying to do more work than I needed.  I searched for all files with a 1 in the folder and then moved them to a different folder.  Then
I deleted the rest.  Job done.  Thanks for the help.

Behaves like Read only, doesn't unmount, fails to back up at like 75-99% in Migration Assistant, can't repair in Disk U, has a mysterious "Lock file" of 166 b. • Failed download from iStore (Madonna - Ray of Light) - can't remove file

Can anyone tell me how to remove a file that won't delete from my downloads, or my purchases. System gave an error that there was a problem while downloading. If I go to 'buy' the file again will apple charge me or will it realize I have already purchased it?
    TIA if anyone can help.
    thx
    saluso

The first thing to try is to quit iTunes (force-quit it if necessary) and then look under the iTunes Store menu for the "Check for purchases" command and run that. You should be able to restart the download, and with luck it will complete successfully.
If not, follow the instructions on this web page for contacting the iTunes Music Store.
    Good luck.

  • Can I remove files from "images removed from" dir?

I have some duplicate files on my iMac, including some large videos in a "images removed from xxxxxxx" directory. Can I safely delete these?

Yes, you can delete this additional "images removed from ...." vault, if you do not need this backup of older videos. It contains all photos/videos, that have been backed up in your vault, and have been removed, because they are no longer in your Aperture library. remove this vault only, if you do not want to keep this videos or have other backups of them.
See Frank Caggiano's answer here:  Re: Folder labeled "Images Removed from Aperture Vault #1"
But I am puzzled: Why are these vaults on your iMac? Are they on your system drive or on a second internal drive? Vaults are best kept on a drive different from the drive where the library is kept. Otherwise they will be of no use, if the drive should fail and needs to be restored.

  • Can't remove "~" File in Macintosh HD Folder

I restored my system using Time Machine from two different backups, the second of which took about 20 hours to restore a mere 40GB, which was unbelievable frankly, because of problems I've been getting and now, in the Macintosh HD folder, there is a file being created, about 640KB in size, that I can't delete. Every time I delete it, it's recreated a few seconds later. I have no idea why it's being created or how to get rid of it, but it's getting on my nerves quite a lot. Can anyone help me? When I go to delete it and have to type in my password, I'm told that it's for com.apple.desktopservices, if that's any help.

    from Apple doc;
If there are several locked files in the Trash, you can unlock them all at the same time at the command line. Follow these steps:
    1. Open Terminal. It's located in /Applications/Utilities.

Type: chflags -R nouchg
Note: Type one space (not pictured) after nouchg in the line above, so that it ends in "nouchg ". Do not press Return yet.

    2. Double-click the Trash icon in the Dock to reveal the contents of the Trash. If necessary, arrange the Finder window so that a portion of the Terminal window is still visible.
    3. Press the Command-A key combination to select all files in the Trash.
    4. Drag the files from the Trash to the Terminal window.
Note: This automatically enters the pathname for each file. This eliminates the need to individually empty multiple Trash directories, particularly when multiple disks or volumes are present.

    5. Press Return. No special text message will be shown indicating that the command was successful.
    6. Empty the Trash.
If the Trash does not empty or if you see a message in Terminal that says "usage: chflags [-R [-H | -L | -P]] flags file..." you most likely did not type the text in step 2 as indicated or did not leave a space. Repeat the steps if this happens.

  • Can't remove file from Sidebar

For some reason on the bottom part of my Finder's Sidebar (where, say, Home and Desktop are), there's a Photoshop document I created. If I click once on it, it opens. It doesn't show up in Sidebar Preferences, either.
Any ideas how to get rid of it? I saved it somewhere else, so it's okay to delete it.
I figured it out (I'd delete this post if I could). I guess I dragged the document onto the Sidebar. I just dragged it into the Trash, and now it's gone. I guess this is good for adding aliases to the Sidebar or something.
    Thanks,
    Allan

To remove any item from the Finder's sidebar simply drag it out of the sidebar, and it will "poof" away. See the following from Mac Help in the Finder's Help menu:

How does one remove temporary files from Safari?  A friend logged on to her Facebook account using my iMac running Mac OSX 10.7.5 and Safari 6.1.6.  Now I can't remove her e-mail address from my computer.  When I open Facebook her address shows in the user button.  I do not have a Facebook account.  It was suggested to me that I try clearing temporary files from Safari but I can't find anything that tells me how to do this.  Are temporary files the same as the cache?  It also was suggested that I try clearing Safari cache.  How do I do that?

Check Safari/Preferences/Passwords to see if the Facebook account is there. If so, select it and remove it. If you are still having problems, Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. If that doesn't work, Safari/Reset Safari.

  • Is there any way I can view / remove pictures from Camera Roll on the iPhone, on a Mac, without actually importing the files?

Is there any way I can view / remove pictures from Camera Roll on the iPhone, on a Mac, without actually importing the files? I just want to view / delete files without importing them.
For instance I have 1200 photos on my iPhone Camera Roll. Some of these are shots, that I've taken multiple times, some good, some bad. I just want to clean up my Camera Roll, but going through the pictures on the iPhone's small screen is tedious. I'd much rather look at the camera roll's photo's on my Mac, and then decide which files I'd like to keep, and which to delete.
I don't want to import the files, as when I import the files, and delete them from Camera Roll, now the Photo's are not on my phone, and the only way to get them back on my Phone is to Import them back in using iTunes, and then they go into the Picture Library and not the Camera Roll.
In the same way as I can view Pics from my digital camera's SD card on a Mac without having to actually copy them to my computer, is there any app out there that will let me view my iPhone pics without importing them.

    The short answer is yes.
Connect your iPhone to your computer.
    Open Image Capture application.
Click on the 4 little squares at bottom to view them as photos, not a list.
Select the photos them click the No Entry icon at bottom to delete.
