Can't remove files off of old MBPro hard drive.

Behaves like Read only, doesn't unmount, fails to back up at like 75-99% in Migration Assistant, can't repair in Disk U, has a mysterious "Lock file" of 166 b. Can see and open all files in Windows but can't move or transfer them to my new Mac.  I can view all files in Mac but it takes forever.  Only main directories load...
Can't move anything off of the hard drive to anywhere.
Can't boot of the hard drive.
trying to move files from 2011? '13 Mac Book Pro 250 GB hard drive
to new '13 macbook air
THROW A HOMIE A BONE.

one error: Can't unmount.
Once every blue moon I'll get some code, but that's it.
Update:
So I booted my Air in win7, started selecting files in the MBPHDD, and clicking properties, and then un-checking read-only. Windows 7 will ask to apply to all subfolders, etc. and then tell me 'permeters are incorrect,' and I clicked ignore.  Five minutes of loading later...I am able to transfer this file <1.2 mb/s to another drive or inside my comp.
Still too slow....

  • How can I transfer files from an old PC hard drive to my Mac?

I have an old PC from which I removed the hard drive.  It is an old WD 40 circa 2001.  I would like to transfer all my old documents and pictures to my IMAC.  I obtained a USB Universal drive adapter from OWC, but I can't get my IMAC to recognize the drive.  Can anyone help me.

    angelpup wrote:
It just doesn't recognize the drive.  Will the first solution you provided work?  The drive has been physically removed from the PC.
It should work with your Mac.  If you have access to a PC, plug it in and see if it can be read, and if so just copy the files to a flash drive to transfer to your Mac (Better than spending your day trying to get your Mac to read it for a 1 time transfer of files)
The problem could very well be that the adaptor you got from OWC is defective.

  • Is there a way to access my iTunes Library, which is stored on a (PC) External Hard Drive, on a MacBook Air (through an Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter), without transferring the music files off of the external hard drive?

Is there a way to access my iTunes Library, which is stored on a (PC) External Hard Drive, on a MacBook Air (through an Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter), without transferring the music files off of the external hard drive?
In other words, because the MacBook Air only has 120 gbs of hard drive space & my old hard drive, from a Lenovo, has 500 gbs of hard drive space (and I have over 120 gbs of music), I’m looking to manage my iTunes music from the external hard drive permanently. Upon attempting to access the iTunes library held on the external hard drive the following message comes up: “The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file”.  Is there a way to get around this?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much!

You will have to engage a split library which means you will have to start answering questions on this forum because you will need to learn a lot about how iTunes works in order not that have a big mess at the end of it all.  It also won't be easy when the time comes to relocate it all to different drives.
You can go to advanced preferences and turn off organize media and copy to items to media folder when adding items to library.  Next read about how to selectively consolidate items to the external drive.

Remember that when you start iTunes without the external drive turned on iTunes will present you with a bunch of broken links.  If you have automatic downloads enabled with iCloud you may have to turn that off to prevent iTunes from repopulating your drive trying to deal with those "missing" tracks.
If you add tracks in bunches to iTunes and want them to go to different media folders you will need to either add them by holding down the option key while dragging if the desired media folder is not the one set in preferences, or by changing the media folder in preferences.  Changing media folder preferences only applies to new files added, not old ones.
Okay, I am going to stop typing because you might just reply to me, "Oh, okay, forget it," and I don't need the exercise.

  • Help Transferring data off of old iMac hard drive onto new Imac

Hello, I have two iMac's in my home office.  My 6 year old iMac recently had the logic board die; so as opposed to putting $500 dollars into an old iMac I just removed the hard drive.  I now would like to pull all the data off this hard drive and upload it to my other iMac.  What type of cable/program do I need to do this?
    Thanks for any insight!

One option would be a hard drive enclosure case. It would also allow you to continue to use the old drive for backups etc. One example of such a case which includes a usb cable to connect to the new computer: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0VN-0003-000H1
The same source has a number of others: http://www.newegg.com/Hard-Drive-Enclosures/SubCategory/ID-92
After the old drive is in the enclosure and connected, you can simply move files from the old drive or you could use OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks

  • I can get my files to download to my hard drive.  I hit the download button and nothing happens

I Can't get my file to download to my hard drive.  I hit the download button and nothing happens

Audiobooks are not part of icloud.  You only get one download.
You need to copy the audiobook to the computer with which you normally sync and sync it to your iphone

  • Remove windows Installation from Old WD hard drive and Install Fresh Copy on the New One.

Hi Community! I just bought a new WD Blue 1 TB hard drive, my old hard drive is WD Blue caviar 500 GB, running on Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit.
There are two things I wish to do: 1. Firstly, if it's possible, I would like to copy some videos, images, music etc. from my OLD Drive to the new one.
Please note that, I don't have an external disk to do it, I know that would've been less complicated, but that's not an option at this point. 2. Secondly, once that is done, if possible, I want to remove windows 7 installation from my old hard drive, re-partition it to make it just the storage drive, and finally install
fresh copy of windows 7- 64 bit to the new Hard drive.
Please note that, my old Hard drive is installed on windows 7- 32 bit and now I want to install a fresh copy of Windows 7-64bit instead of 32bit, because I am upgrading my
    configuration with better ones.
I am adding 4 GB corsair vengeance ram to my 2 GB corsair ram, so that is 6 GB in total.
I am adding 1 TB hard disk to my 500 GB Hard disk, so that is 1500 GB.
Both my processor and mother board supports 64 bit.
Intel® Pentium® Processor G2020 (3M Cache, 2.90 GHz) And this Mother board - "Biostar H61MGV3"I know that you could clone the partition and migrate the installation from one hard drive to another using the Acronis True Image WD Edition Software, but I don't want that.
In simple words, say I have a dos computer, I installed my 1TB WD hard drive, installed a fresh copy of windows 7-64bit. So my computer is up and running. Now, I have another hard
drive which I wish to use, that is 500GB WD, but it has Windows 7-32 bit installed in it.
So what I want to do is, make this old hard drive a complete 500 gb storage device and remove the windows installation from it, without loosing music, videos, etc. and then lastly
copying the music and other media to the new hard drive, and formatting it completely.
I am perhaps making this very complicated, I know you would have better easier solution for this.
I am frustrated, your help would be appreciated, thanks a lot. Sincerely, Abe

Since you don't want to clone the drive (I agree with you), you can just swap drives and install Windows on the new drive. Windows won't complain that you are installing on a different drive because it only cares if you change more than one piece of hardware at a time. The problem will arise when you copy the files from the old drive because you cannot just connect it via SATA. That would confuse Windows, as both installations were run on that hardware. You need to mount it in an external dock via USB 2.0/3.0 which will isolate the details of the OS. After you copy all necessary files, you can use WDC Lifeguard to write zeros to the entire disk and then create a new partition. After that you can mount it via SATA because it will be a new drive. Do NOT be in a hurry to wipe the drive however, as you don't want to forget something.

  • Can't find files after restore onto new hard drive

    Hi,
I just installed a larger hard drive.  I saved a disk image to an external drive, made a recovery disk, booted off the recovery disk, and restored the saved disk image.   Then I took the new unallocated space, formatted it, and created a mounted volume in a folder on the C: drive (My Documents).  I moved everything under My Documents to this new mounted volume.  In other words: C:\My Documents is now a mounted volume, not actually in the C: partition.
The trouble is, the files are there but in many instances they aren't findable.  It seems like there are caches of directory structures in various places that have to be rebuilt, or there are virtual pathnames (e.g. C:\Users\myusername\Documents) that have to be reset.  For example, I have a spreadsheet with references to values in other spreadsheets.  It can't find these anymore, even though the pathnames ought to be the same.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?
    Thanks very much.
    - bill.

I have only played with XP for sure on changing the location of the my documents folder. It usually involves right clicking on it and going to properties and changing it. Sounds like you may need to copy things around, and then, edit the location on the my documents folder. I am not really sure what your situation is.

  • Tying to locate address .vcf files on my old iMac hard drive.

I have taken out my old hard drive on my old 2004 iMac and made it an External Hard Drive. I did this because the power unit in it died. I bought a new iMac about a week ago and love it. I now need to extract my old addresses from the old hard drive. Does anyone know where I could find them? Where does Mac usual default file them? I can't find them anywhere, and I have tried using spotlight to find them and I have tried using the import feature but it asks to locate the fil(s) and I can't seem to locate them. I know I didn't put them in a special place, I just need to locate where my old computer filed them.
    ANy help would be appreciated!

    No problem

    1) For some reason this happens once in a while with FAT32 enabled external harddrives. I have no idea why this happens but it most easily solved by reformatting the drive. First make sure you've copied everything from the external drive to your internal harddrive. You've done this earlier so I assume you know how to do this.
Now the reformatting part. Open Finder and go to Applications. Look for the folder called "Utilities". Click on it. In it you find a program called "Disk Utility". Click on it. Now look for the external drive. You probably see two entries for the disk. Click on the one that contains the name of the drive NOT the one that describes the disk (Like for example 320.07 GB Samsung S2 Portable Media).
Now you see four tabs in the righthand part of the window. They're called "First Aid", "Erase", "RAID" and "Restore". Click on "Erase". This opens the tab with (amongst others) a dropdownbox (Format) and a textbox (Name) . In the dropdownbox select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Take note! This selection disables usage of the drive with Windows PC's. If your goal is to share the drive with Windows PC's select the MS-DOS FAT option.
Enter a label for the drive in the textbox Name. Now click on the button "Erase". This will format the drive.
Now when it's done you can copy back all the items you've copied to your internal harddrive earlier.
    2) Opening two windows like Explorer on Windows is opening two Finder windows on the Mac. Simply click on the background. In the menubar you items like 'Finder", "File", "Edit", "View", et cetera. Click on "File" and "New Finder Window". Do this two times. Alternatively you can click on the background and press CMD-N two times.
    3) You can right click on the trackpad. This however depends on if you've enabled the feature in System Preferences. In the topmenubar click on the Apple icon and select "System Preferences". Now look for Trackpad in Hardware. Click on it. You see three tabs with the names "Point & Click", "Scroll & Zoom" and "More Gestures". Select "Point & Click" and look for "Secondary Click'. Make sure it is checked and make sure it has written "Click or tap with two fingers" written beneath "Secondary Click". When you're done exit System Preferences. Now select the background and tap with two fingers on the trackpad. This should open the contextuel menu with options like "New Folder", "Get Info" et cetera.

  • How can I transfer files from my macbook pro hard drive to another target drive

The hard drive on my Macbook is corrupted and so I am trying back up files from the hard drive on my Macbook to a target disc so that I can wipe the hard drive on my Macbook and re-install the system software. I am only able to access the Macbook via disc utilities using the start up system DVD. Is there a way of accessing the files while I'm in disc utilities so that I can transfer to the target disc?

Some MacBooks have Firewire, while others do not.  See this tip:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2502
If both of yours have Firewire, you can use the Target Disk mode described at the end of the tip.  Otherwise, you'll need to pull the hard drive out of the machine that it is in, and put it in a 2.5" hard drive case that supports the ports that are on the other machine.
Note, if you can't read the data on the other machine, using a data recovery tool to a hard drive at least as large with no data on it is recommended.  This tip explains how to do data recovery:

  • Can't transfer files from a mac external hard drive to a windows hard drive

Today I went to a friends house to try and take some of his music from his external hard drive. So we plugged his mac converted hard drive into my computer, which is operating on windows 7, and my computer could not read that anything was there. So we plugged in my windows converted into his Macbook Pro, and his computer was able to read it, but for some reason, we could not transfer files from his hard drive to mine.
I was just wondering if I am doing something wrong, or if it could be because I am using a hard drive that I bought in China, and any information would be great.

NTFS is readable in Mac OS, but can't be written to.
HFS+ is not readable in Windows, though Apple now has a (somewhat problematic and buggy at times) service to allow Windows on mac to read HFS+ to make it easier and more convenient.
There are drivers (free and commercial) to add the ability to read and write to each.

  • LR3 can't find files after copying my previous hard drive to a new Lacie Thunderbolt drive

I transferred my LR3 files from my WD hard drive to my new Lacie Thunderbolt drive and now I can only get the preview and it says the file is missing.  Is there a setting I need to change that I am not aware of?

You have moved your image files outside of Lr (via your OS) and now Lr has lost the connection to your images. This happens every time you move images outside of Lr. Lr stores in its catalog - among all the other things - also the location of your images, and if the location stored in the catalog is different than the situation onyour hard drive you get the "missing" file message. "Missing" means that Lr does not "know" where your images are.
You have to point Lr to the location of your image files to fix the broken link.
In the Grid View (left side) in the folders panel you should see question marks in front of the folder names. That is Lr's indication that the link to the folders is broken.
Go to the top-most folder in the hierarchy of the folders that show the question mark and right-click it (click with the right-hand button of you rmouse). Select <Find missing folder> in the fly-out menu, navigate to the coresponding folder on your LaCie and click on it. Lr will then also find the sub-folders under that folder on idt own - provided that you have not changed the folder names or the folder structure.
If you have done that you have to "point" Lr to each folder individually with the procedure described above.
BTW you will also get the "missing" message when you open Lr but your external drive is not switched on.

  • How can I delete files from iTunes AND my hard drive? It used to be very obvious in iTunes but I no longer see that option.

I used to easily be able to delete songs from my hard drive and library through iTunes but I no longer see that option. Is there a way to do that or a workaround of some kind?

Are these songs in the iTunes media folder shown in iTunes prefs > Advanced?
Only songs in this location will be deleted from the HD when delting from iTunes.
    Also, iTunes prefs > Advanced.
    Click Reset Warnings.
If you are deleting from a playlist, it will only delete from that playlist.
Hold Shift and press Delete to remove from the playlist and from the library.

  • Can't access files on Formatted SeaGate external hard drive

I have a SeaGate Free Agent Go external hard drive.  I reformatted it to be Mac compatible when I bought it to back up my old mac book a few years ago.  When trying to access the iPhoto library it says it's on a locked volume and to try again when I have read/write access. I went to disk utility and repaired disk permissions on my computer and checked to see the format of the external hard drive (Mac OS Extended). Any help on how to access these pictures??

There isn't an option for :ignore ownership on this volume". This is what my get info page looks like:
It looks to me like I need to change access for everyone but am unable to do so. Like I said in my previous post I formatted the drive to my old computer (which not working anymore) so I'm not sure how to get around this.
