Can't remove standard shared folders

Hello,
i'm using a MacBook Late 2007 since it came out in 2007. I updated to Lion through the AppStore, but a lot of different bugs moved me to wipe my disk and to freshly install OSX 10.7.2 Lion from online source.
Today i tried to disable the sharing of the standard public folders of each user account (I have 3 user accounts: admin, my girlfriend and me). I am logged in as User (me), go to system preferences, sharing, file sharing. Click the lock symbol, login as admin. Than i click the minus symbol, but nothing happens.
Next thing i tried: I went to the shared folders directly, marked them and pressed CMD+i. The information window popped up. A little blue check mark tells me, that the folder is shared. I click on this check mark, but nothing happens. The check mark is not going away.
I can add new folders to shared folders and remove them. But i can not remove the three standard public folders. Why? In 10.6.8 i did not have this problems.
Now, i disabled the filesharing completely. Does anybody has a similar problem since Lion or a solution for this problem?
Thank you in advance.

Here a possible solution: http://forums.appleinsider.com/showpost.php?s=3b80bad0740427705a356d119369449a&p =1925315&postcount=4
It seems that he is using a third party software to acces further sharing options.

Thank you Giri, for quick reply.
I want to save the Azure Backup storage cost, now.
I don't want to pay the Azure Backup storage cost for no-restore-need files until the backup point gets aged.
and I don't want to remove / re-backup the restore need files by un-register/register operation.

    Hey Matt...
When I select it, it's blank.. nothing's in there... I think I first saw that when I used my laptop @ a hotel I had to connect through a ethernet cable and there was a bunch of networks... but now I am back in my office and just connecting to my wirless connection called "rhino's" (thats' the name of my company)
So I'm not sure why the "All" is there.. and when I click on it, it doesn't show any network...
Hope its not too confusing mate.
    Thanks,

  • Can I set new shared folders to inherit permissions from the parent folder?

Am running file sharing on an OS 10.9.5 machine.  This is not an OS-X Server.
9 users connect to this machine.  They create folders and store files on it.  All the users who connect are in a group which has read and write permissions on the volume in which they store files.  But when they create new folders, the permissions on the new folder is 755.  I have changed the umask to 002 and this works for users who might create a folder locally but does not work for network connected users.  All users are AFP and, if it matters, are on 10.8.5.  The OS versions are held back for good reason.
Is there a way to enable Inherited Permissions for new network created folders on the standard client OS?
If not, can I do so on the server OS?  I have several older OS-X Server machines where this is a possibility.
(Sorry if this is a duplicate but most posts like this seem to concern locally created files and folders and not network shared folders.)

It can be done more easily with OS X Server, but you can do it anyway if you're familiar with the shell. See the section headed "ACL MANIPULATION OPTIONS" in the chmod(1) man page.

  • Upgraded 2 macs to Mavericks, can no longer access shared folders/files.

So I upgraded my Macbook Pro, and Mac Mini to Mavericks today, and previously when they were both on mountain lion I could access the shared folders/files and screen share with absolutely no issue whatsoever.
But upon updating to Mavericks today it all broke.
Both computers were running the OS X Server software on Mountain Lion, and I went ahead and purchased/installed the new edition of server that came out today.
I can see the other mac under the "Shared" option in Finder's sidebar, but when I try to open the other mac it says connection failed and offers to "connect as"
As I usually do, I connect as and it asks for the login credentials. I put in the same credentials as before, 150% sure they're right, in the text boxes that I used before, but it won't allow me to connect to the mac.
I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they're the right credentials.
I thought it may have been just a wonky permissions error so I unshared the folders and reshared using the same permissions that had worked before.
I've been working on it for about 3 hours now so any help would be appreciated.

I upgraded my two machines - now when I access files on the "shared" storage array (a thunderbolt, pegasus array) across the network (ethernet) if I modify the file (for instance, a jpg) and then go to save I get a "you don't have permissions to etc...." and then when I just close the file without saving - it disappears from my file server permanently! even if I go to the machine hooked up to the array the file is "gone" - unbelievable. I have updated permissions where I can, deleted and added the sharing for users, tried SMB and AFP, and even downgraded the "sharing" machine back to OSX 10.8 where it was working fine but the client machine still is doing this where it can connect, see all the files, but as soon as I modify a file I get the warning and bam, it's gone forever....
Wow - this is a doozy. I don't have a fix but WARNING - watch out as you are working on this problem that your files are being vanished permanently.

  • HT204022 Can't remove photos or folders downloded from my computer

Can't remove photos or folder on my iPhone 5 IOS7: Created (2) separate photo folders and downloaded from my computer (on iPhone the folder label has (downloded from my coputer) next to folder name. These photos were first copied from photostream (on my computer) to separate folder on my computer and then downloaded to these folders on iPhone 5 IOS7. These are thae only folder on devise that can not be moved or deleted.....HELP, this has consumed storage memory I would like to have back.

Any folders synced to your phone have to be removed by syncing them off.  Deselect these folders on the Photos tab of your iTunes sync settings, then click Apply at the bottom to sync and they will be removed.
If you no longer have these folders on your computer you can create an empty folder and sync that to your phone to remove them.

  • Removing Unwanted Shared Folders

    Hi,
I have seen a bunch of posts re: how ^_- emails tend to create "ghost" mailboxes in the cyrus "Shared Folders" directory and the corresponding solution with frontline and the bug in cyrus that allows this to happen.
My question is regarding how do you delete these folders once they are made??
I have gone into var/spool/imap and deleted them physically (rm -r ^_-*)
I have tried to delete them using cyradm, however I get "Permission denied"
I try changing ACL permissions through CHOWN and get i/o Errors!
So my question is how does one actually get rid of these nonsensical ghost folders?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks - Rohin

    Ok,
Apparently the easy workaround is as follows :-
Download the SirAdmin utility which allows you to run a GUI application that has same functionality as cyrus admin
log into server using your admin username and password
re: the i/o errors, I chose the ghost mailboxes and reconstructed them all using the reconstruct button in siradmin (click on mailbox and then reconstruct)
Only after reconstructing I was then able to add the ACL for my admin with all privileges (only after reconstruct - before I was getting no permissions! very strange)
after you add ACL to give you all privileges you can then easily delete the ghost mailboxes!
Siradmin is a neat little app! =)- Rohin

  • Can not remove users home folders from TM exclude list.

    Hi
    MBP mid 2012 10.9.3.
Been away from my TM for some time. So adjusted exclusions I have in place for regular backups. For some reason I can not remove the users home folder exclusion. I have reset TM by removing the plist. Everything reset apart from the exclusions. Any Ideas?
    Cheers.

Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a file named "com.apple.TimeMachine.plist" selected. Move the file to the Trash.
    Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost
A folder named "ByHost" should open. Inside that folder, there may be a file with a long name beginning "com.apple.TimeMachine." If the file exists, move it to the Trash.
    Restart the computer and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • My MagicBox Imp media player can't see my shared folders

I have a wireless MagicBox Imp internet radio and media player. The radio works fine but I've never succeeded in getting it to find my iTunes folder (or any other folders) although it can see my computer. File sharing is turned on, windows sharing is also on and I'm pretty sure I've followed other instructions – it says in Directory Access to enable SMB/CIFS, then click 'configure' then enter a workgroup name (I've entered 'workgroup' as I've read that is the default but I don't know if I'm supposed to put something else instead). That's about the extent of the help for Mac in their manual (incidentally, MagicBox appear to have gone out of business so I can't contact them for help). iTunes prefs is set to share library.
I've always been a bit unsure about networks so don't know enough to try other things. Am I missing something obvious? I've also got it to look for our Mac Mini running OS X 10.5 but it won't see that one at all! We use Airport Extreme.

Hi BDAqua, apologies for not replying sooner. Re your 'techreviews' link, I'm glad it's not just me being dense!
I finally managed to get hold of tech support at MagicBox who have said that due to a quirk with Macs, the best thing is to... "make a separate account with a name such as 'music' that has access to your files, once this is set up restart the computer and log on with your normal user name then try accessing from the IMP." I've done this but still no joy.
The thing that confounds me is that in the set-up instructions it says to enable SMB/CIFS in Directory Access, click configure and enter a workgroup name and click apply. I haven't a clue what the workgroup name is (where will I find this info?) but have put in 'workgroup' as I have read that this is default. 'Apply' is greyed out when I do it so I assume it hasn't changed. In their 'troubleshooting' section it says " The PC with the media content may not have the same workgroup as the server managing the network. The easiest solution is to change the PC workgroup name to the same as that being supported by the server". I'm not sure what this means.
To make things more difficult, I've noticed that sometimes when I 'scan for PCs' on the MagicBox, sometimes it doesn't even find my Mac at all, even though Airport shows full strength.
I'm going to pursue this with their support department but I suspect that they don't know much about Macs. However, if you have any further suggestions, I'd really appreciate your help. Many thanks.

  • Can't remove distiller fonts folders...long time for opening distiller...xp

We have distiller 9.0 in workflow and in font location option is 1000000 font folders. I cant remove it from list and distiller need long tine to open. I try to manualy remove files *.lst (AdobeFnt108.lst....) from \\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\Distiller 9\Cache but after distiller open he remake this files. How I can fix this?

I don't think you can. As I recall, Distiller loads all of the fonts recognized by the system and then any more that have been given separately to Distiller. In the past, the answer was to remove some of the system fonts. Your number sounds very excessive and probably few folks would use more than a handful. Thus they are just wasting your system resources anyway. A lot of the time, such fonts are added by various graphics packages and cause the problem. You may not like my solution and you may want to wait until someone else makes a suggestion more to your pleasure, if possible.

  • Other Macs Can't Connect To My Shared Folders...

I have 3 macbook pros in my house, all running 10.5.4 Leopard, and only one has this problem and I don't know why:
The other 2 computers can see my computer under "Shared" in the Finder, and clicking on it connects the computers successfully as "guests", but they can't see any of my shared folders. It is just empty. I am sharing my Public folder, and I have tried sharing other folders as well, but nothing will show up no matter what I try.
I can see the shared files on other computers fine, but no one can see my computers shared folders even though they can connect to my computer.
    Thanks for any help...

Yes... I should add I have file sharing turned on with both AFP and SMB enabled. I also have the Firewall set to allow all incoming connections.
When the other computer connects to mine, in sharing settings, it shows one connected user connected, but that user can't see any folders on the computer no matter what I share.

  • I can not access any more shared folders on windows 7 other pc on my homegroup

    Hello every one.
I had my home group network working fine over  wi-fi connection, (laptop with win 8.1 and laptop with win7) till few days ago I had to format and re install the win 8.1 using recovery disk from toshiba. Since then, although I have setup again the home
group as it was before, I can access the shared folders on win8.1  from win 7 but not the other way around. So when I try to access the shared folders on win 7, on my win 8.1 I receive the message:  WINDOWS CAN NOT ACCESS \\WIN 7\\SHARED FOLDER.
Notice that when I open the network folder on win 8.1, my win 7 pc is visible, I click on it, I can see all my shared folders and the above message appears when I click on them.
Apparently some settings have changed on laptop win 8.1
Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Where is the Shared folders in itunes

When I want to copy files from my iphone, I can't find she shared folders in itunes

    That's because it doesn't exist.
If you're trying to copy documents created by and save in apps on the phone, go to the apps tab and click on the specific app toward the bottom of the page. If it supports file sync, It will be there and any documents that can be copied from the device will be there.

  • How can I subscribe to shared mail folder

    Hello,
I have added shared IMAP folder to my account on the mail server, but still can't see it on my MAC mail.
I can't see any shared folders to subscribtion list to subscribe to unlike having the same account on thunderbird-windows which I am able to see it perfectly.
How can I see the shared IMAP folder on MAC mail client too?
    Thanks.

The only hardware that's preventing me from upgrading to 10.8 "Mountain Lion" would be the fact that a Mid-2007 Mac mini doesn't have a separate graphics card...
...as all other hardware-components ar similar to the iMac Mid 2007... :
    - at least 2GB of PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM RAM
    - a 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo "Merom" processor
    - a WiFi-N compatible AirPort-card (I've upgraded the one in my Mac mini to an Atheros AR-9280...)
    - OSX 10.6.8 or later installed (I have OSX 10.7.5)
    - iPhoto 9.4
...so the only spec I not meeting hardware-wise is the fact that my Mac mini has a GMA950 shared graphics card...
but surely... that can not be the reason I can't subscribe to a Photo Stream...
why would that have anything to do with eachother ???!!!
[ I've even seen claims of tricked OSX 10.8 installers for the Mid-2007 Mac mini, so if that's my only option... ]
