Can't rename files on new drive

I copied all of my data on a secondary drive to a new drive and installed it but it is requiring a password to do anything to the files?

Select the volume icon in the Finder and open the Info window. Click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and enter your administrator password when prompted. Check the box at the bottom marked

  • Can't open files from iCloud Drive on Mac

    Hi,
Can't open file from iCloud Drive on my MacBook Air (OS X 10.10.1).
I created new file (in Numbers for example). Then Numbers->File->Open->iCloud Drive->my_file.numbers and it says "Can't open file my_file.numbers".
I can preview the file by pressing Space, but openning from application and double-click on it doesn't work.
Files that were created earlear also not opened.
Does anybody know how to solve this problem? thanks.

    Using smtp.mail.me.com - also tried smtp.me.com
    SSL yes
    port 587
    SMTP Authentification Yes
Security SLS/TLS - also tried STARTTLS
User full **@me.com email address - also tried user name without @me.com
I have spoken to apple support this afternoon and we tried the variations shown above.
Support told me to wait for a day and try again!
After the iCloud authentication problem last night I changed all my passwords I wonder if there is an SMTP problem at me.com perhaps not reading the updated passwords?
I'll try and use the old passwords later.

  • Can't rename files on an external harddrive,

I import my pictures into Lightroom using the following format YYYYMMDD - XXXX.  For example, a picture with a file number 2113 taken on Dec 16th, 2011 would be ranamed 20111216 - 2113.  I import them to my computer first and then move them to an external hard drive when the storage on my computer gets tight.  For a while, I accidently was adding a space to the front of my file name, so it would import as " 20111216 - 2113" instead of "20111216 - 2113"  notice the space at the beginning file name.   This space was maintained when the file lived on my computer, but it was removed when I moved the lightroom folder to my external hard drive.   As a result, all of the files that are on the external hard drive show up as "missing or deleted."  Light room thinks there should be a space in the front, but none of the files on the hard drive do.  I have to locate each and every file by hand, and the "find nearby photos" check box doesn't help, because all the files are missing the space.   Is there a way to batch rename files in lightroom, even when the file is missing?  I need to change all the names in my catalogue to take out the space at the front so I can then easily locate the files on my external hard drive.   Can someone help me out?  There has to be a better, faster, easier way to do this other than individually locating each and every file on my external hard drive.
    Thanks for your help,
    matt

Lightroom can't rename files while they're missing.  If you batch rename the files on the external hard drive, to include the space again, LR should find them and then you can rename them within LR to remove the space again.

  • Cannot rename files, folders and drives

tried to GRAB the error message, and it's hanged when I tried to save the image.....
There are problems on rename files, folders and drives, also have problem to delete things....
    what can I do.....!!!!

Ok, finally i just reboot the machine and it is fine now.
I guess there are some bugs related to the user permissions...
Indeed, I encountered a few bugs and they were fixed by rebooting the machine.
More details: I am using a early 2008 version mac pro with mountain lion and upgrade os to mavericks last nite.
At first, it cannot connect to my wifi network, it kept asking me to enter password for my network but kept saying it s failed. After trial to fix it by a few methods which were failed, i gave up and reboot, and vala~ It worked again..
Then i tried to rename my system drive as it was named "mountain lion", and i just want to rename it to "mavericks", error popped out, and i found that i cant rename folders or files, or put them in trash.... Again, it worked again after reboot!!!!
Guys, for those who wannna upgrade to mavericks now, better wait for a few more weeks till some update come up n fix those issues....

  • How can I rename files without creating a duplicate?

How can I rename files without creating a duplicate?  And secondly, for some reason I can no longer save pdf files [i.e., bank statements] where I want - the Save As function is gone?

In many new cases, Save As is now called Duplicate in ML. It uses the same command-S keystroke. Older apps still have Save As. When you do a Duplicate operation, you will create an UNTITLED document. You have to save that duplicated document to complete the process.
So in 10.6.x, you would do ...
    * Save As ...
    * Give the file a new name + Chose the location for the file
    * Click the Save button
Now in 10.8.x, you do ...
    * Duplicate ...
    * Save ...
    * Give the file a name + Chose the location for the file
    * Click the Save button
As baltwo mentioned, you have to search the Preferences of your browser to determine what is has set for the default Download folder.

  • Can't copy files to new 2TB TC

I recently setup a new 2TB TC to replace an existing Airport Extreme.  My wireless network appears to be working properly.  The TC is visible in Finder as a shared device on my MacBook Pro; however, it won't allow me to copy files to it. File sharing is enabled, but I keep getting a message that "Modifying my TC requires an administrator name password.  It asks me to click "Authenticate," but no such option appears.  Help!

Click on the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading in the Finder
Look to the right for a folder named "Data" (unless you have renamed the drive)
Double Click on Data to mount the Time Capsule drive on the desktop
The first time that you do this, you may be asked for the Time Capsule device password
Once the icon is mounted on the desktop, you can drag/drop files onto the icon, or double click the Data icon and drag/drop files into the open window representing the drive

  • Moving files to new drives but keep same drive letter

I need to fix a few things with the drives on my SQL server and was wondering if the following is a valid solution. The two main things are putting the files on drives formatted with 64k blocks (was the default of 4k before and I will be changing to 64k)
    and adjust the SCSI ids.
I did a quick test and it seems to work but I’m not sure if there’s any hidden surprises waiting for me.
In a nutshell, this is the procedure I was planning:
    - Stop all SQL services
    - Add new drives with temporary drive letters
    - Use the following command to copy the data over for each drive (folders are the default names created when SQL was installed): robocopy “S:\Program Files” “X:\Program Files” /COPYALL /DCOPY:T /E
    - offline old drives
    - Rename new drives to the old drive letters
    - Reboot the server
Is there anything I’m missing or is that a valid option? Does SQL somehow mark drives in a special way or can my migration be that simple?
    Thanks

What you described will work fine.  I have done it that way many times.

I don't think there is a way to specify how to open a file of
    NO type.
    Why not rename them?

  • Can't rename file with Applescript

    Hi,
I'm a programmer but I'm new to Automator and Applescript. I am trying to rename pdf files based on a specific line of its content but I don't succeed. I created a service that exports the text from the pdf to a file. Then I use applescript to read that specific line from the file, then another applescript to rename the pdf to that string. Every step works except the rename part. When I tell Finder to rename the file it stops with the error: "The operation can't be completed because there is already an item with that name." This is not true, but I keep getting this error message no matter which file I try it with.
The odd thing is that if I set varName to some constant like
set varName to "METEOR CEE Kft..pdf"
it works like a charm. So I figured maybe
item 1 of input & ".pdf" = "METEOR CEE Kft..pdf"
is false. But that is not the case, I tested it in the script and they are equal.
    What am I missing?

I think that the problem is that there is a lot of invisible characters in the text file when Automator extracts a PDF to plain text (open the file in a text editor and turn on "view invisible characters", or use cat -e in Terminal)
I've gotten around this is the past by extracting to a RTF and then using textutil to convert to txt
    Try this Automator Workflow:
    The bash script is:
textutil -convert txt "$1"              # Convert from RTF to TXT
         n=$( sed -n '9 p' "${1%.*}.txt" )         # extract line 9 fron text file
         mv "${1%.*}.pdf" "${1%/*}/$n.pdf"     # Rename file
         rm "$1" "${1%.*}.txt"                         # Clean-up RTF and TXT files

  • Can't transfer files to external drive

After the latest upgrades I now can't transfer files to my external drive. I have done it many times before with Arch and now it says I don't have permissions to create it.
what is needed to get it working again?

    stefanwilkens wrote:
is this external drive NTFS and are you using GNOME by any chance?
The volume manager now mounts with the ntfs kernel module by default, which doesn't support writing to NTFS. a fix is available in the wiki:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gno … me_Manager
If not, we'll need more information. What filesystem is the drive, what DE / WM are you using, kernel version, etc.
I've used this Seagate external drive many times with many distros and even Windows and haven't had any trouble until today. I don't even know if its ntfs or not. I didn't matter before.
does this mean that I will have trouble with other distros that use Gnome 2.28? Why would they do this? I've backed up the files I need to a cd and I may just use another distro instead. Arch is nice but not that nice if I have to reconfigure things that worked previously.
Will the new Ubuntu 9.10 do the same thing since it has Gnome 2.28?
I just had another crash because of the new upgrades. Too bad. Arch is not any better than many other distros, from my experiences. I see it breaks just like Fedora and others.

  • How can I rename files when importing?

Is there a way to rename files when importing them? Every method I've tried retains the original file name the camera assigns (e.g. DSC_0001). I'd like the ability to rename the files automatically either with a date or event name with sequential numbering following.
    Thanks!

First you will have to upload from the camera to a folder on the Desktop where you can batch rename them before importing into iPhoto. That's a safer workflow IMO because you can make sure the photos are safely on the hard drive before starting any other operation.

  • Upgrading stock hard drive: how to copy lion and files to new drive

Per above, I'm planning to replace my stock 5400rpm drive with a new Western Digital Scorpio Black drive this evening.  I want to transfer all my files, folders, and applications from the old drive to the new one.
I have an external drive, which has my Time Machine backup.  Can I use that backup to just restore everything after physically installing the new WD? Mor is there a better way?

I would get an enclosure in which to place your old drive. Then boot from the external drive, partition and format the new drive then clone the old drive to the new one:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Clone Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue button.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new drive. Source means the external old drive.

  • Can't copy file to network drive as "The operation can't be completed because the [Filename] is in use

Following upgrade to Yosemite I now can't copy files from iMac to my network HDD in external media center. I have iMac connected by wi-fi to airport extreme and media center connected to airport extreme by cable. I can see the HDD as a network drive on my iMac and can initiate the copy but right when copy process is finished I see "The operation can’t be completed because the [Filename] is in use". I am trying to copy different media files downloaded from internet which are not used by any program and stored on my hard drive. I actually can copy small files of 1mb and it works but anything above 20mb is halted. I can also move/copy/delete the file on iMac. Cant understand the nature of the problem. I tried to format external HDD as EXT2/EXT3/NTFS but same outcome.
OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 | iMac late 2009 | Apple Airport Extreme | Dune HD Base 3D mediacenter

Have you tried a restart or logging out/in?
    Some more ideas.
