Can't rename newly created Folders

I updated to Tiger 10.4.9. Now I cannot rename any folders, new or existing. If I do "Get Info," the screen goes blank then returns to regular without changes to the folder.

Gordon,
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like your problem may be either a Finder or Contextual Menu issue.
Before you try anything else, Repair Disk Permissions.
If it is a Finder issue, it may be helpful to find the com.apple.finder.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Drag it to your Desktop, log out/in or restart and check for normal finder behavior.
If it is a Contextual Menu problem, can you identify any corrupted or incompatible third party files in the following folders:?
Macintosh HD/System/Library/Contextual Menu Items
Macintosh HD/Library/Contextual Menu Items
Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Contextual Menu Items
If so, you may be able to uninstall/reinstall the associated application.
Consider temporary sequential manual removal/isolation of the suspect file to verify CM functionality and finder stability

  • Why do newly created folders have random creation dates? This is on a Seagate GoFlex USB drive.

Why do newly created folders have random creation dates? This is on a Seagate GoFlex USB drive. Is there a fix? It appears to work fine in the internal drive.

So your hard drive is setup for a PC using NTFS and you have the NTFS-3G driver installed (I wonder which version of the driver). I know many users have reported problems with file transfer speeds being slower on a Mac, but this is understandable due to the 3rd party driver you have to use to access the drive.
There are other higher performance drivers available for a price, like Tuxera but their site shows they haven't updated their drivers since late in 2010. They do say that they are 64 bit drivers but they want about $37 for it. They maintain a support site that has quite a bit on info about NTFS-3G issues.
I assume you've got a freeware or open-source version of the driver from Seagate. It's probably OK for occasional use to access the NTFS drive, but not the way you want to use a drive all the time on MacOS.
Fat32 is compatible with both OS's, but there are some restrictions like not being able to use video files larger than 4GB (actually 1byte smaller than 4GB) and the 2TB partition size limit. Both HFS+ and NTFS have advantages due to the way the OS's can optimize transfer speeds and reliability, but a drive that's plugged into many machines is always going to have compromises until we get native support for NTFS (possible in the future because it's already been tested), or the Windows side supports HFS+ (probably not going to happen). There are programs/drivers on both sides that can accomplish this compatibility, but not native solutions at this time.
Using 3rd party drivers could mean problems with some drives that don't work well or completely break with a system update in the future. Apple doesn't seem to try to break compatibility features, but they do control the transfer protocols and optimize the OS for reliability. Flash drives are mostly formatted with Fat32 and they seem to work well for data transfer with just about any OS.
For me, I've chosen to use a NetGear ReadyNAS NV+  in an Xraid configuration for local storage and Time Machine support, and Dropbox for some files that I can easily transfer to Mac, PC, or Linux by just using a web browser, and I quit installing proprietary drivers to any computer, Mac or PC. I've also got a couple of the USB Fat32 laptop drives (250 to 320 GB) laying around for large file transfers if needed.
Sorry, I got a long way from your original Folder Creation Date issue.

  • Cannot save in newly created folders

When I connect to the SMB server thing, for some reason, I cannot save to newly created folders that my co-workers make. With I right click on the folder that my co-worker created, it says "You have custom access". And I cannot save my Indesign files in that folder. But when I create a folder, everyone is able to save in that folder. When others create a folder, they are able to save in it as well, except for me. This has never been an issue before until recently.
Do I have permission issues? I ran Disk Utility to fix my permissions but no success. Help please. I just want to save my Indesign files to the server for everyone to access.
The server we are using is the Mac Mini Snow Leopard server thing.
    Thanx!

have you tried shutting down your mac, restarting and trying again with a newly created folder. do you have the same issue then?

  • Hi  I can't seem to create folders to save emails in.  I have added a new mailbox, but it doesn't show up on the left of the screen.  What am I doing wrong??  Thanks

HI.  I can't seem to create folders to save emails in.  I have added (several!) new mail boxes, but they do not appear in the menu on the left of the screen.  How can I access/view them?  Many thanks

Well, just to confirm the process, open Mail and click on the word "Mailbox" up at the top pf the screen in the menu bar.  Then click on "New Mailbox" in the list.  In the window that opens, enter the name you want for this new mailbox.  The new Mailbox will be located over in the left hand column under the heading there, "On My Mac".  If you cannot see the mailbox there, then it is "hidden" under "On My Mac". You will need to hover your mouse cursor over the phrase "On My Mac" and just to the right the word "Show" will faintly appear.  Click on "Show" and your Mailboxes under "On My Mac" will appear.

  • Adobe reader 10.3 for iPad. I don't get the options to rename files, create folders, etc.

PDF files downloaded from safari have weird names. I use open in, adobe reader, documents, click edit, click wrench icon. I get only the option to delete. I want to rename the file and organize it in folders. I don't see any option to create folders. Pls help.

What kind of iOS device are you using? If you know, what version of iOS?
If you have a very old device, it may not have all the options available.

  • Netstorage WebDav - Can only see and create folders

    Hello,
I am attempting to map a Netstorage drive using WebDav from Windows 7 32bit or 64bit or Windows 8.1 64 bit. I have read other posts where people have had problems, but I think my problem is a bit different. After mapping the drive, I am only able to see folders and create folders. Creating other files results in error 65535. Copying files to a folder, from by harddrive, results in "Can't read file from the source file or disk".
I have another customer, with almost the same setup. Both Netstorage v. 2.0, same Apache version aswell. And it works in their environment.
If I log in via the webinterface, everything works file. It is only when I map it in Windows. Some say this is a bug in Windows and I have installed all the updates Microsoft has released regarding WebDav. Again, it works in one environment, but no the other.
It looks like rights of the user, but since it does work over the webinterface, it can't be.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jacob.

  • Can't rename new untitled folders

I've never run into this problem that i can remember. I just went to create a new folder in my "applications" folder for a new browser I downloaded, and all of a sudden, i no longer "have sufficient access priviledges" to change the folder's name, and if i go to put a new folder or anything else into the Apps folder, I now have to "authenticate" with my password. What is this crap? I've never had to problems like this with my Applications folder before, so what happened?
Anyone else run into this? Not even repairing permissions or zapping the PRAM several times clear this up.

Glad you found a solution. Running the disk utility and verifying permissions doesn't work in most of the posts I've read about the topic.
Corrupted drives are just one of those features that Apple continues to use. I go through external terabyte drives like toilet paper (or diamonds depending on your income level) archiving projects. I just had a drive I was working with earlier today suddenly stop allowing my to create folders etc. I've had it happen about 5 times or more now on various OSx versions with various brands of hard drives. Seems to happen somewhat randomly but could have to do with other devices being plugged into your system at the same time and Mac can't handle it- corrupts the drive (today I plugged a camera into my computer via USB). The only solution I've found is to copy the data, reformat the drive, and copy the data back onto the drive. I appreciate user's optimistic view of Apple computers. It makes me want to believe that some of the other things that suck in life are actually amazing opportunities- and sometimes they are.

  • Can't rename or delete folders because thumbs.db is accessed / locked

    Hy techguys!
I have a problem deleteing or renaming folders on a network share.
When I look at the opened files on the Server I noticed that the Thumbs.db in the folder is opened by a user.
But the User have already closed the folder.
If i disconnect the Session on the Server the folder can be renamed or deleted.
The other way is to wait and the Session will close automatically. This lasts between minutes to houres?
Anyone an Idea why the connection to the thumbs.db were not closed?

  • Newly created folders won't open???????? OSX 10.9.2 , firefox 29.0.1

I organized my imported bookmarks from Safari (MacBook) in FireFox 29.0.1 (MacBook). I created a few new folders and sub-folders in the Library view (Firefox/Bookmarks/Show All Bookmarks/Library). Later when I tried opening the newly added folder(s) from the Menu Bar "Bookmarks" tab they would not open (Expand)?
I could still access and open them from (Firefox/Bookmarks/Show All Bookmarks/Library), but not from the top Menue Bar "Bookmarks" tab?
I have clean installed Firefox and the problem is still not resolved?
If anyone has had this problem or has a fix for it your help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Newly created folders give "staff" read-only permission

When I create a new folder in my home directory it has the following permissions:
    Me: Read & Write
    staff: Read only
    everyone: No Access
Other (non-admin) accounts seem to belong to staff and thus have read access to any non-standard folders in my main (admin) home directory.
    1) How can I change the staff permissions on these folders (Finder gives me an error)? Is this only possible using sudo chmod?
    2) How can I change the default permissions to stop giving default access to all users through the staff group?
    Thx,
    Chris

to any non-standard folders in my main (admin) home directory.
The easiest solution is just not to keep confidential folders that you create yourself at the top level of Home. You could instead create a single enclosing folder to hold that all that extra material, call it, say, "My Other Stuff", and put it in your Documents folder where it would be protected from all other users. You could then create descriptive subfolders within in it, which would also be protected.
If you still instead want to alter the permissions of folders that you create yourself and you don't want to use Terminal, take a look at [BatChmod|http://www.macchampion.com/arbysoft/BatchMod/Welcome.html].

  • Can't Rename or Move Folders in LightRoom 2

    Hi,
    I moved from LR 1.4 to 2.
Now I can't move or rename folders in the Library Module. Can you help?
Also, I still have LR 1.4 on my computer. Is this unsafe?
Is it safe to use 2.1 Beta?
I've already lost files because I didn't know you shouldn't run Time Machine with LR.
    Thanks for any help.
    Best,
    Mitchell

The method for renaming of folders in Lr2.x was changed from that found in Lr1.x.
Right click on folder to activate the context menu - you should rename is on the menu list.
There is no harm in leaving Lr 1.4 on your computer, but you should note that it cannot open Lr2.x catalogs.
Lr 2.1 is more stable that 2.0, so upgrading would be a good move.

  • Simple Question: Can I rename old backup folders?

I've gone through a couple MacBooks (changed MAC addresses and such), so I have about 3 different "computers" in the Backups.backupdb folder. Two of the three folders are no longer "live" backup databases, and are effectively only around because I still want the data. I'd like to rename the folders to something more distinct when I'm "browsing other Time Machine backups". Can I simply change the name of the folder, or do I need to update some plist-files somewhere as well?

Do NOT ever modify or change anything in the TM backup directory. You will probably lose everything if you do.
    1. If you want to "rename" an old backup, run TM and in the TM window which is the only proper way to access TM files, find the old backup and restore it to your computer. This is the file you can rename.
    2. Now, you can rename it and let it become backed up again with the new name.
    3. Finally, once you are assured it is backed up again, then using the TM interface, you can safely delete the old backup.
For these operations you use the Action gear in the TM finder window.

  • How can I rename my Bookmark folders?

I am using Firefox V 25.0.1 on my Mac with OS X V 10.8.5. I used to be able to rename folders, but have been unable to do so. I have no "Bookmarks Manager" or anything identified as a "Library." I have no "Manage my folder" menu tab or "Properties" tab and I am unable to highlight the folder name to rename it. I see nothing under the "filled-in star" in the sidebar. Any way I can rename a sub-folder?

Here is the easiest way. Right click the bookmark (on the taskbar) then click properties. In the small window that will pop-up, you will see the current name in blue highlight - so change it to whatever short name you want it to be - then save. All done!!
