    Steve

You might want to back up the disk as soon as possible, do the repair, then back it up again. First time will have the issues that Disk Utility can't fix, however, you'll have the data saved.  Then, once you get things repaired, make a new backup, and go from there.
If you're going to use a hard drive directly connected to your iMac for backup, this is what I mentioned earlier: http://twelvesouth.com/products/backpack/ Great way to use space behind the iMac without adding something else to the desk top. You can buy it through Apple online/stores or Amazon, and there are probably other sources too.
For external hard drives, I like those sold by OWC at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/ as many of them use Oxford chip sets, wihch work well with macs (I've used several for years with no issues). Most pre-packaged drive/cases have a 3 year warranty, although you can buy a case and add your own hard drive. I like Western Digital Scorpio Blacks that have a 5 year warranty.

  • How can I repair disk permissions

How can I repair disk permissions on a non boot drive? I have a SSD as my boot disk and a HD as a storage drive. The permissions are not correct on th HD and in disk util the option for fixing the permissions is ghosted out. I really would hate to do this one folder at a time.
    Thanks

    FYI, BB
Below is a quote from Apple describing what Disk Permissions deals with.
If you still need assistance, please describe what problem/issue you are trying to solve.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452
"Many things you install in Mac OS X are installed from package files (whose filename extension is ".pkg"). Each time something is installed from a package file, a "Bill of Materials" file (whose filename extension is ".bom") is stored in the package's receipt file, which is kept in  /Library/Receipts/ in Mac OS X v10.5 and earlier. These files don't take up much disk space and you shouldn't put them in the Trash. Each of those ".bom" files contains a list of the files installed by that package, and the proper permissions for each file.
Does Disk Utility check permissions on all files?
Files that aren't installed as part of an Apple-originated installer package are not listed in a receipt and therefore are not checked. For example, if you install an application using a non-Apple installer application, or by copying it from a disk image, network volume, or other disk instead of installing it via Installer, a receipt file isn't created."
Is this what you want to "fix"?

  • DiskWarrior and Disk Utility can't repair volume after 10.4.6 upgrade

I appreciate any advice on the following problem:
After installing the 10.4.6 update On April 4 (which installed just fine), I did my usual post-installation system maintenance including repairing permissions, running CRON scripts and cleaning the caches. I got a strange Apple Script error that flashed on and off the screen (too quickly for me to document) while I was cleaning the caches, then the process finished. Then when I used DiskWarrior as part of my usual maintenance, it "stuck" while saying that the process was slowed because of a disk error. I waited for an hour, and it never completed. I then restarted using the OS install disk, called up Disk Utility and selected Repair Disk. This is what I got:
    Verifying volume "Macintosh HD"
    Checking HFS Plus volume
    Checking Extreme Overflow file
    Checking Catalog file
Invalid node structure (in red font)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired (in red font)
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (in bold red font)
    1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair (in bold red font)
I cannot repair this problem using either DiskWarrior or the OS installer disk with Disk Utility. In addition, I was unable to archive & install the system while using the OS install disk! I have tried repairing permissions and using DiskWarrior and the OS Installer disk again with no success.
I am able to work on my Mac, but things seem slower and I get occasional oddball errors that make no sense. A few times, applications have quit unexpectedly when they weren't before.
Am I going to have to initialize the hard drive and reload everything?
    Many thanks!

    Mac G5 (dual 2GHz)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I had a similar experience after installing 10.4.6.
The messages I got in Disk Repair were:
    Checking Catalog file.
    Illegal name (in red)
    Illegal name (in red)
Keys out of order (in red)
The volume Rich's HD could not be repaired. (red)
Error: the underlying task reported failure on exit. (In red)
After a long time on the phone with Apple, we decided to reinitialize the hard drive. I have reinstalled the OS and am in the laborious process of restoring my user files and non-Apple applications. What a hassle! And I am not even sure all will be restored to proper functionality.
Don't know if either yours or my disk failure are related to 10.4.6 but Apple better watch closely for user feedback. These are potentially disastrous problems for users if they have not backed up.

  • Macbook Pro not booting after update. ''Disk Utility can't repair disk''. Help needed!

I have recently updated my macbook pro as I had some pending software updates. I left it to do the job over night and the next day I noticed it was not letting me sign in to my account session as usual.
I restarted the computer and ever since then when I boot it, it just shows the apple grey screen with a bar that loads to about a 3rd and then it turns off again. I have contacted apple but they were unable to help me with this.
So far I have tried to:
    1. Re-install OS X 10.8 - but it says the disk is locked or OS X cannot be installed on Recovery HD.
    2. Verify and Repair the disk and I errors but it cannot fix them. Some are:
                   'invalid leaf count''
                   ''missing thread record''
''incorrect number of file hard links''
                   ''overlapped extent allocation''
and it finally says ''the volume Macintosh HD cannot be repaired'' Error: ''Disk Utility can't repair this disk.. disk, and restore your backed up files.
I would like to know a way to back up my files so that i can completely restore the disk without any data loss as I havent backed up for a while!
If anyone has any solution to this issue it would be much appreciated!

    I just ran the Disk Utility, and cannot very disk. It gives me an error message;
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
and when I run the repair, this is the message:
The volume GERRARD could not be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
    Repair attempted on 1 volume
1 volume could not be repaired
Prior to running Disk Utility, I have already tried DiskWarrior, and could not repair my disk. Anyway I can fix this problem??? Formatting the disk would be my last option (though I am unsure if it will fix the problem). Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Meanwhile, I will continue to back up my file, and delete unused data and try to run it again.
Thank you all very much for any input.
    Cheers,
    Matt

  • Mac os x mavericks can't repair disk

thats at least what i get when i restart the computer then it tells me to back up as much of the disk as possible and reformat the disk as soon as possible. uh.......................................... do i look like an apple IT whiz to you? i'm not okay? i'm just your average user of a mac which uses mavericks 10.9.2 which just wants to get things done and repairing time machiene is one of them. then after i clicked on the red i on the disk it said the disk was read-only and i THOUGHT that was the only problem until i clicked on it just now and now it says:"time machiene cannot complete the backup to "my disk"." so i have to deal with two problems now? or just one? i'm very confused now. if you are very mac-technical and can help me out please reply to me but explain everything to me in layman's terms. i don't understand jargon.

when i tried to repair time machiene this is what i got from disk utility: "disk utility can't repair this disk. back up as much of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files." you're talking to the average computer user here not the tech whiz. a little help would be nice here just as long as you tell me what to do in layman's terms.
