Can't repair disk permissions, System Updates wont install

Hi there,
I wondered, why any system update wont install on my MacBook Pro with Leopard 10.5.5. So I tried to repair disk permissions which causes an error that calls something like "there is an error in quitting the process" (sorry ... have only the german version, so this is nearly what it says).
Repairing the permissions from a Leopard DVD ends up the same way.
Repairing the harddisk works fine.
Updating the 10.5.5 Combo Update quits with an error that says "The Installation package couldn't install some of the files in "/". Contact the Manufacturer."
Any ideas what this could be ? Thought it startet a couple of days ago with the installation of a new Java Version, but I'm not sure if this causes any problems.
Thanks for any suggestions

ok,
I've found this in the logfiles:
Started verify/repair permissions on disk disk0s2 Macintosh HD
Error -9972: The underlying task reported failure on exit
Finished verify/repair permissions on disk disk0s2 Macintosh HD
Error detected while verifying/repairing permissions on disk0s2 Macintosh HD: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)
Repairing the keychains worked fine but didn't solve the problem at all.

  • How can I repair disk permissions

How can I repair disk permissions on a non boot drive? I have a SSD as my boot disk and a HD as a storage drive. The permissions are not correct on th HD and in disk util the option for fixing the permissions is ghosted out. I really would hate to do this one folder at a time.
    Thanks

    FYI, BB
Below is a quote from Apple describing what Disk Permissions deals with.
If you still need assistance, please describe what problem/issue you are trying to solve.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452
"Many things you install in Mac OS X are installed from package files (whose filename extension is ".pkg"). Each time something is installed from a package file, a "Bill of Materials" file (whose filename extension is ".bom") is stored in the package's receipt file, which is kept in  /Library/Receipts/ in Mac OS X v10.5 and earlier. These files don't take up much disk space and you shouldn't put them in the Trash. Each of those ".bom" files contains a list of the files installed by that package, and the proper permissions for each file.
Does Disk Utility check permissions on all files?
Files that aren't installed as part of an Apple-originated installer package are not listed in a receipt and therefore are not checked. For example, if you install an application using a non-Apple installer application, or by copying it from a disk image, network volume, or other disk instead of installing it via Installer, a receipt file isn't created."
Is this what you want to "fix"?

  • Can't repair disk permissions or run Mac Software update application

I tried repairing the disk permissions and received the following error message:
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
Got the same error message when verifying the disk permissions. The verify disk option also failed.
Whenever I run this application to check for updates, it just bounces in the dock and disappears. Then I get this error box that says "The application Software Update quit unexpectedly". It then gives me 3 options to "ignore, report, and relaunch".
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks for the fast reply. I was able to run the disk utility using the disk. But I got the same errors when I booted back up and tried to run the "repair disk permissions". Plus the "Software Update" program still crashed.

  • Can't repair disk permissions

I just bought a new Mac Mini (2.0 GHz Core Duo w/2 GB of RAM and 320 GB HD) and migrated all of my files over to it from my Time Machine Backup. Over the past two days my two external hard drives have developed permission problems. Yesterday, I booted my computer and my Time Machine backup drive (Western Digital 1 GB) had a small lock on the desktop icon and my permissions were all messed up. I had two versions of my account with "custom" permissions and "Staff" and "Everyone" also with "custom" permissions. I couldn't fix it, so I formatted the drive and now it is working.
Today my other external drive (don't remember maker, 500GB) is doing the same thing (lock on icon, et al), but I don't want to erase it. I tried going to Disk Utility and the verify and repair disk permissions buttons are greyed out. Now, I can't get to my iTunes content on that drive.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    - Paul

Called Apple Support three times with less than lousy results. My Mac Mini crashed on my first call and it took three Leopard installs before I got back to where I was to begin with.
However, none of the technicians would touch Terminal to fix this issue, but I had found instructions all over the Web. So, I ran some of the commands in Terminal and magically I could fix my permissions on the external HD. I am now repairing permissions on my Macintosh HD and hopefully that will be the end of it.
    Phew!

Looking at that lot, no further help is required - The messages are just information. Provided you get the "Permissions Repair Complete" you've nothing to worry about.
You do not need to routinely repair permissions; it's harmless, but wasted time.
As a diagnostic tool it can be useful for some problems, but 99% of problems encountered have nothing to do with disc permissions.
It's also worth pointing out that this procedure only looks at permissions on system files and applications which have an installer receipt package in the System Library.
It does not solve problems with permissions on user data files.

  • How can i repair disk permissions i know i altered?

sigh... this is the second time i've fudged my wife's MacBook.
i downloaded some music on my MBP. i then gave her the same files via USB (then again later via Bonjour). the files work on my MBP and on my iPod Touch no problem. her MacBook received the files into her inbox no problem. but in iTunes, trying to add the files into her Library, an error comes up saying roughly 'you do not have sufficient access to preform this action'. a few google searches later, i figured it was a permissions problem in the file folders.
command-I over her Music Folder, change privileges to "Read and Write" for 'My Wife', 'Admin', and 'Everyone'. click the gears icon below that, and 'Apply to Enclosed Items'. restart.
didn't work. so i thought to myself: hmmm, maybe its a folder im not thinking to check. if i just changed those permissions across the board, it'll work then! i'm so smart.
command-I over her disc icon on the desktop, change privileges to "read and Write" for 'My Wife', 'Admin', and 'Everyone'. click the gears icon below that, and 'Apply to Enclosed Items'. restart.

ok, so i troubleshoot on the forums here. after quite a few reads, i land on:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
follow steps for safe boot, no luck.
follow steps for resetting PRAM, nuthin.
follow steps for Disk Utility, and i find there were quite a few Permissions that were changed (duh).
the Repair Permissions finishes and most of the log says the 'Permissions were modified and will not be Repaired'. i know i can ignore most of the SUID files that won't be repaired, but there a re a handful of files that im sure are causing the problem. is there another step i can take here? can i rewrite the permissions for the problem files in the terminal?
or am i barking up the wrong tree here entirely?
Archive and install is my next step, but i want that to be my last resort, if only because she's gonna kill me. the last time i "fixed" her MacBook, it ran me $280 for the file recovery service. we're in a recession people, i don't wanna blow another $280.

that was not clever. you now have to do an archive and install. and in the future NEVER EVER and I mean under ANY conditions use "apply to enclosed items" on ANY system created folders and your startup drive. that includes among other things your home directory, your Music folder, your desktop folder, etc. Use it ONLY on folders you make yourself. you should never change permissions on system files period. the reason you shouldn't do it on system created folders in your home directory like the Music folder is that such folders often have hidden ACLs and using "apply to enclosed items" will propagate those ACLs to everything inside. in particular, the Music folder has "everyone deny delete" ACLs and if you use "apply to enclosed items" on it you'll have to enter your admin password any time you need to delete move or rename anything in that folder.
    restart.

  • Can't repair disk permissions on sparsebundle

I have a 2TB Time Capsule that I've used for months without issue. I back up 2 machines to it (my wife's MacBook Pro and my iMac). Recently, when it backs up, I've noticed that it's sometimes backing up more than it should (i.e., I only added a few small files, yet the backup is indicating that several GB are being backed up). Conversely, other times I've added several video files that are upwards of 2 or 3 GB collectively, and the backup says that it's only backing up 300 MB worth of files. My exclusions are fine and accurate. I recently went into Time Machine and found that several recent additions are not there in my most recent backup. I've erased the Time Capsule a few times recently and did full restores overnight, but the problem keeps occurring. Today, I added my wife's sparsebundle file to Disk Utility and it repaired fine. When I add my sparesebundle to Disk Utility, the color wheel appears and then Disk Utility stops responding. Is this a hardware issue? I'm believing it is since I've erased the disk several times, but I welcome ideas that will prevent me from having to purchase a new backup disk . Thanks for listening!!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
You can't repair permissions on a Time Capsule, because it doesn't have OSX installed on it, and you can only repair permissions on files that were installed by OSX or Apple apps.

See #A2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for a couple of apps that will show exactly what's getting backed-up.

See #D5 in the same place, for some possible reasons and fixes. It sounds like you may have the problem detailed in red.
Today, I added my wife's sparsebundle file to Disk Utility and it repaired fine. When I add my sparesebundle to Disk Utility, the color wheel appears and then Disk Utility stops responding.
I assume you mean you dragged it into Disk Utility's sidebar? If so, do you mean the sparse bundle never mounts, and you can't select it, or it hangs after you click +*Repair Disk?+*
Oddly enough, the names of some things can cause problems with Time Machine backups over a network. See #C9 in Troubleshooting.

  • Can't repair disk/Won't boot from install disk

Apologies in advance for how not-tech savvy I am.
I was trying to create a partition using bootcamp but the partition failed and it told me to repair disk using disk utility.
When I try to boot from the install dvd by holding down C the computer just gets stuck in a loop. It turns on, chimes, makes a whurring noise and then restarts again. I can select the install disk by holding down the option key but it does the same thing. If I try to safe boot it comes up with a flashing folder and a question mark.
(Also, the install disk I'm using is not the one that came with this computer, but a OS X 10.5.4 that came with our iMac. Don't know if that would make a difference?)
I downloaded the techtool deluxe that comes with applecare, and it says there's a problem with the volume structure, but when I try to repair using techtool it says the disk cannot be repaired and only gives me the option to start over.

You would have to be booting from either a newer version retail OS X 10 install DVD
than whatever your computer shipped with, or that original specific disc set it first had.
No other computer's model/build specific restore-install disc set can do this job, since
it would not be correct and can't boot the computer. The wrong software set is on it.
There may be some way to attempt to boot into Single User mode and try fsck...

There are odd instances where users have applied incorrect use of Boot Camp
to install a Windows version in their Mac, and in so doing, erased or damaged
the OS X partition on their computer's hard disk drive. This is why it is a great
idea to perform maintenance and also keep a complete bootable OS X clone
on an externally enclosed hard disk drive, of the Mac's system & apps.
If you had a current version of DiskWarrior on its own disc media, that may be
able to help fix or restore some file system issues in a hard disk drive.
Perhaps there is more you can do, but frankly if I wanted Windows, there are
tons of old PCs out there awaiting recycle from which to choose. (Not 4 me!)
    Good luck & happy computing!

Have you used FontBook to disable some of your fonts? If, in the process, you disable a font the system that an Apple app needs, those apps will not launch but third-party ones will. I suffered this on my desktop machine. I allowed FontBook to "resolve duplicates" and it disabled off some fonts that it shouldn't have. Took a week to figure out what happened.
If you have played with FontBook, you may wish to review this excellent font management article:

  • Cannot, View or Repair Disk Permissions with disk utility,

    Hey,
I can't repair disk permissions using Disk Utility.
I can only repair them using the boot disk and I'm just worried that something somewhere is corrupted or gone irky (Technical computer term).
    Thanks.

Installed Lion on my 27" iMac (mid 2010) and everyday since it shuts down after start up.
Called Apple they said repair permissions, after safe boot. Thats works but only for the next restart.
When I shutdown and start up the next day I have to go thru the same process.
    Anybody else have this problem?

  • Repair disk permissions "greyed out"

We have a G5 with 2 internal hard drives that we use as a server. I can run "repair disk permissions" on one drive, but on the other the choices for repair or verify disk permissions is greyed out. Why is this and how can I repair the permissions on the one drive?

    2 possibilities come to mind.
    (1) The disk in question does not have Mac OS X installed on it (required for permission repair).
    (2) The disk in question does not have suitable files in the /Library/Receipts folder (such a folder doesn't exist, I guess, if OS X isn't there - see (1)).

  • Safe to verify and repair disk permissions with SSD?

Is it safe to verify and repair disk permissions with an SSD installed?

    Thanks.
Its just strange, as soon as I repair all my permissions, if I verify them again straight away, there are some that already need re-repairing

  • Constantly having to repair disk permissions after hanging system

From the time I purchased this I've had ongoing issues with the java, flash, OS updates causing the computer to hang forever. Sometimes I end up having to press the off button because Command Q and Command/Option/Escape won't allow a force quit even after a 20 minute wait. I don't know enough about what's going on behind the boot up to know what's wrong. Here is a copy of my console log and this is exactly what they look like each time after I have gone in and done a disk verify, (says it's okay) and then repair disk permissions. I've had to boot to safe mode 3 times today and repair permissions due to this issue. There is nothing plugged into the computer except the power cord. The OS is up to date per Software Update and the only 3rd party software installed is SKYPE ...

Which MacBook model? Did it come with OSX 10.6 or did you upgrade it?

  • You May Want to Repair Disk Permissions After Printer Updates Today

It's been pretty automatic for quite a while--install printer updates and then repair disk permissions.  Most of the time, the permissions errors aren't critical and everything still works; however, many people like to keep their boot disk permissions fixed.
After installing "HewlettPackardPrinterDrivers2.7.2" and "BrotherPrinterDrivers2.7" today I again repaired permissions.  The errors weren't critical, but I can't remember seeing more of them than I did today.  Make sure and scroll the list of errors because if you don't have scroll bars showing all the time, it doesn't look like there is much in the way of errors.  When I didn't see a scroll bar, I assumed there were only a few errors--wrong.
My installation was on a Lion system.  And, Disk Utility did fix them all.  None were there when I repaired permissions a second time.
    Just an FYI.
