Can't repair/partitionate reboot disc.

So a month ago or something the power went out and my computer broke in some way, something with the reboot disc not working.
So i called apple support and they helped me install OS X on an extern hard drive. My computer has been working fine, but i have to start it up from the hard drive every time. It's pretty annoying to have this thing laying around all the time.
So I wanted to repair the disc and have stuff normal again, but i can't repair the disc, and i can't partitionate it. So honestly I really don't know what to do.
Can you please help me? I'd really appreaciate it. Thanks.

I have just bought DiskWarrior 4 online and installed. It seems not helping much. It found out some errors but can't be repaired. But these are just some other safe file names, it seems not dealing with the errors found in the Mac's Disk Utility
Or i haven't explored the possible usage of DiskWarroir? I can't rebuild the directory as DW is in the same HD and OS is running in the same HD as well...

  • Can I repair a bad disc?

I needed to reboot my macbook pro (mbp) but couldn't, due to it hanging. I got around the problem by partioning the disc 6.8G and 86G. I loaded osx onto the larger of the two and it worked with no problem. I find now that when I try to erase the smaller disc the mbp crashes. How can I repair this disc? I need to because boot camp wont load multple partions.

    Hi, bLowry,
I would be tempted to erase all the partitions and then run the hardware diagnostics tool on the install disk by booting from that disk. If it detects no problems, you could then begin the install process by booting from the install disk but jump into the disk repair utility at the first menued screen. If you find even a hint of problem that cannot be repaired, I would send you Mac in for a replacement. If not, I would try a clean install, and start over with BootCamp.
I am using Parallel's Workstation to run Win XP within OSX. It's very cheap and it works extremely well. The only issue is getting some peripherals to work, and it does not support 3d video, so it's not good for gaming. It requires no extra partition, can be deleted by dropping one file in the garbage. It comes with a "compressor", so my whole install is just one file that is slightly over 4GB. It even has a shared clipboard function. I love it (well, I would like to try some PC games, admittedly . . .). When Leopard comes out, I will try BootCamp and compare.
Best wishes on your repair (if you have to use your warranty coverage, i can attest that Apple is great and fast. I got a new logic board installed and returned in 5 days, and a battery in 2 days via DHL Express.

  • IPOD won't connect to ITunes.  Mac OS Can't repair the disc and Partition Failed.  Help!!

    Hello,
I am distraught because my IPod Classic won't connect to ITunes.  My Mac won't even recognize it after a few seconds, and I have to keep resetting for the Mac to recognize it.  Mac OS can't repair the disk, and said to reformat.  I tried to partition, but that failed with the error message: couldn't unmount disc.  I don't mind losing all the files, and am really just hoping that it will work again.  I have virtually zero technical knowledge, and thought I might reach out to see if any savvy users know a trick or two that I might try.
    Thanks for all your help,
    Mary Louise

  • Why can't Mac OSx repair My Passport disc?

I keep getting error message that MacOS x can't repair disc My Passport.  I don't know how to back it up either.

You need to provide more information such as the complete error message from Disk Utility. If Disk Utility said you should immediately backup your data, then you need to connect another external drive to the computer then clone the Passport drive to the added external drive. If Disk Utility is unable to accomplish that, then you will lose the data on the drive, and you will need to re-partition and reformat the Passport.

  • Install disc can't repair volume

My Blackbook just ground to a halt this afternoon. I had to hold power button to turn it off. When I restarted it, I got a gray "no" sign (like the ghostbuster logo) where the apple should be.
So I booted to the Snow Leopard install disk to repair my boot disk. The name of the volume came up and I tried to repair it and it stopped half way through and said it can not repair the volume. It said to backup as many files possible, reformat and restore backed-up files.
How do I get to those. How can I back them up if I can't boot, or even go into Target Mode on my iMac? Is there something better than the Install disk to try and repair it?
If I choose to re-install SL will it leave my user account info intact?
Is there any hope? Is this an issue an Apple Store GB might be able to help with?
    Thanks

How can I back them up if I can't boot...
Connect an external hard drive (FireWire or USB) that has sufficient free space to hold at least one copy of the contents of your Macintosh HD.
Start from your Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6 Install DVD. (Insert the disc, then restart and hold the C key.)
Select your language. Do not start an installation.
Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Select the disk you wish to back up (your source disk, such as Macintosh HD) in the source pane on the left.
Click "Verify Disk" to check the hard disk for issues. If an issue is found, click "Repair Disk" to repair.
Click the "New Image" button in the toolbar.
Give your image a useful name such as "04-15-2009 Macintosh HD backup". A date in the name makes it easy to tell when the backup was made.

  • Can't repair Macintosh HD - incorrect number of file hard links

    Hi,
Under Maverick, my computer started to become slow.  I see the spinning wheel frequently.  I upgraded to Yosemite telling myself that the new OS X installation process would clean anything not working properly under Maverick.  However, my computer is still slow.
I tried to verify the Macintosh HD using disk utility and an error prompted me to repair my hard drive because of an error.
My Yosemite is in French : Nombre de liens physiques du fichier incorrect.
I think it would translate to incorrect number of file hard links.
When rebooting using Command - R and verifying my Macintosh HD with the disk utility, it found no error and consequently, the repair function did not help.
When rebooting and running disk utility, I still have the incorrect number of file hard links error.  I have a MacBook Pro 2012
    1.  Is the error incorrect number of file hard links causing my computer to be slow?  What is this error?
    2.  What should I do to correct this if the disk utility does not find an error when rebooting using command - R?
    3.  I have back-up using time machine, but I'm unsure that I should be restoring these back-up : not sure exactly when the error started and if I restaure a back-up "pre-error", would it correct the error?
    Thanks for your help

Thank you for the reply! I can't remember what it said after the repair except for the big green letters telling me that the volume appears to be working. I just ran a verify from the install disc again and the message read " the volume appears to be working ok". After that I ran another verify from the hard drive and got the incorrect # of file hard links, volume header needs minor repair, the volume HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired, Error this disc needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disc and use disc utility to repair this disc.
The computer seems to be running great, I am fully backed up but not sure how concerned I should be.

  • How can I repair the Volume?

My IMac G5,(late model '04) was not working as expected. I verified the permissions, and a few were repaired. The problem continued, then I verified the disk(Tiger).
The process returned a message box with the following text: "First Aid Failed. Disk utility stopped because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit".
There are 2 message indicating the "Volume bit map needs minor repair" and "the 1HFS volume checked needs repair"
The clickable button that should be pressed to perform this repair is grayed out and non functional.

Yes, you cannot repair the Disk while booted from the same one.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
In the future... you do not want to Repair Permissions or do any writing the the HD if it needs repair.

  • Lost reboot discs and admin password not known

    Hi
back using my daughter old mac i have no reboot discs available
for some downloads like windowsmediaplayer systez asks for administrator name and password
while name is there (the first admin from which we bought the pc) password is missing and reseller close out business
is there a way to get password from the system and be able to edit
any tips are welcome and would be helpful

There is a way to "reset" admin passwords in the OS X, by using the retail (or as shipped disc set)
installer disc and chosing from the options in the menu bar, from the booted OSX installer.
If you do not have the retail or computer-specific bootable installer disc for the system in the computer
you would need to get one and use that. There are further instructions and ideas available online in
this Support section which is searchable, and maybe also under the OSX-version threads.
Hopefully you will be able to find someone who has but no longer needs a retail OSX 10.2.x installer
disc set; and you can use that to handle this matter. You can also use the installer's disk utility to
repair the disk and other tech tasks, so with each OS X, it is very handy and probably necessary
to have the boot installer disc for the OSX in the machine, and include it with the later sale or trade-up.

My Macbook pro has the message on a black screen need the reboot disc then press any key to continue. Any Ideas, because I have no discs.I am running Lion OS

Was this a dark gray screen that appeared with the message to restart the computer in five different languages? If so that's a kernel panic. It would help if you can post the panic log: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic. Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics.

After getting the dreaded gray/blue screen, I tried to run disk repair on the internal disk. I got an error message saying "Disk Utility can't repair this disk and restore your backed-up files. The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely." What do I do now? This is an iMac and I'm running 10.6.8.

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it. See below for how to clone a drive.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
You may be able to backup your data if you have an erased external drive you can use. Before you do the above but after you have opened Disk Utility you can try to clone your drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Now this will only work if the drive is accessible and can be cloned by Disk Utility. Otherwise, you would need to access your drive from another Mac that you can connect via Firewire - Target Disk Mode.

  • Error disk utility can't repair this disk...disk and restore your backed-up files

I have been working on a project using an external hard disk. I used my Macbook Pro (2010)  to create this project and files (about 31 GB). Now I am trying to open the disk on my iMac (2014) and it doesn't show up. I can see the HDD when I use disk utility but get this message when I try to repair/restore the disc:
"error disk utility can't repair this disk...disk and restore your backed-up files"
The funny thing is that the disk works absolutely fine with my Macbook Pro. What am I missing?
    Imac :OSX 10.9.4 , 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 Gb Ram.

    Nico,
    Did you find a way?
This just happened to me too.
