Can't reset new ipod classic

I've just bought a brand new ipod classic 160Gb and managed to get it to sync with iTunes and download all my music. However after I disconnected it from my pc the Apple logo screen appeared. I then tried to reset it by pressing the centre button and menu as I've done many times before with my old ipod classic 80Gb. All this does is get the Apple logo to reappear but it never gets to a point where the start menu appears.
I've used this reference to put the ipod into disk mode http://http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363 and then was able to access the hard disk in Windows and see that there were files on the ipod. I left it attached to the pc until it was fully charged. Afterwards when I managed to exit disk mode the problem hadn't been solved.
Is there anything I could do in disk mode to resolve what is going wrong? The article above doesn't say anything about what you do once you are in disk mode.

Hey basilfaulty,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Looks like the iPod does not start up past the Apple logo. This article explains what you can do after you have tried Disk Mode.
iPod only shows an Apple logo and doesn't start up
