Can't reset PRAM - Horizontal lines on Display

I've been having some erratic behavior on my iMac, possibly since the last software update. I'm seeing some horizontal lines on the displays intermittently in a seemingly random fashion. I wanted to try resetting the PRAM and I tried holding Command + Option + P + R down while booting the machine multiple times and it won't reset. Any suggesting? Is there an alternative method or resetting the PRAM on on Intel Mac. I have a wired Apple keyboard.

Just to verify your attempt at resetting the P-RAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US
Do you hear the boot chime or does it just boot up normally even though you are holding down the keys? It is possible that the keyboard is not being activated immediately by the hardware controller. There have been some reports of this happening with the new Aluminum keyboards. If you have an older Apple USB keyboard that you could borrow just long enough to reset the P-RAM that should work. Otherwise you might try resetting the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543?viewlocale=en_US

  • Screen Distortion (Horizontal lines) Across Display

For quite some time now my Macbook display has had horizontal lines along the right side of it. These lines go from the very top to the bottom and are about an inch or two in width. Sometimes goes away when i have a Pages document open. But is constantly there otherwise.
I have attached a link to a picture to better show the problem.

If you have already had a case number with Apple for this issue and it is not resolved, you ought to be able to have it serviced. Call AppleCare and reference the old case number, and explain that the first fix did not fix the problem, and because you brought this to Apple's attention before your warranty expired, they should still do the repair for free.
You can test for whether it is faulty RAM by pulling out one stick at a time and testing whether the lines persist.
    Good luck!

  • PowerBook Will Not Wake from Sleep - Horizontal Lines on Display

I have a new PowerBook that I purchased last December. When my computer goes into sleep mode, it will not wake up unless I do a hard poweroff by holding in the power key for 5 seconds. When it tries to wake from sleep all I see is my mouse cursor on a black screen or the spinning beach ball. I'm also having problems with graphic applications such as Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator where I'm using lines that are only 1 pixel in length. The lines disappear when I drag them across the screen as though I'm missing a whole row of pixels or half of the line is fainter. I also notice very fine horizontal lines throughout my display. My older PowerBook does not have these lines nor this wake from sleep problem.

Contact tech support, it will need to be sent in for repair, and as long as your hardware warranty is good or you have APP the repair will cost nothing. unfortunatly this is basically your only option, unless resetting NVRAM takes care of it. to do that turn off com. hold down option, apple(2 key's left of space bar)and o, f, then turn on while holding those down. when firmware opens up type in reset-nvram, press enter then type in reset-all(include the dash in both)
this will reboot com. if this does not take care of it a repair is needed.

  • Macbook w/ whole slew of problems...Won't Start Up, Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk, Horizontal Lines on Screen, Etc.

I purchased my Macbook in the summer of 2011 and before it went berserk it was running Mavericks. 3 years later, it's finally seemed to have run its course.
It won't start up normally and it won't start up on safe boot. Attempting to use disk utility to repair the disk only gives me the message: "Disk utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible." There are also horizontal lines across the start screen (before it inevitably shuts down) and the screen looks very faintly purple-ish/off-colored.
This actually didn't come out of the blue. On Monday, my macbook suddenly froze, went white, and beeped three beeps repeatedly. I restarted it and backed up all my important work files and set up an appointment at the genius bar for Friday once work ended. It remained buggy during this process with the beeps returning an occasionally a blue screen popping up.
Unfortunately, there wasn't enough space to back up my important photos and by the time I returned on the next day with an external hard drive to store them on, my macbook would no longer turn on.
Is there anything I can do to bring my macbook back to life? Ideally I'd like for it to last one more year before I graduate college. Is it still salvageable, and if so, is it worth salvaging?

I hate to spread gloom, but that computer has serious problems. The only people who can diagnose the problem(s) are technicians. I would take it back to the Apple store for further testing.

  • Can I reset PRAM or NVRAM in a MacPro?

    Hi all,
I'm on my second MacPro - Apple changed out the last one because of fan & bluetooth issues - and since the latest 10.4.8 update my fan is a bit louder than before so I thought I'd try the above as it worked on G5 machines. I know this has EFI or something wich is different to the G5s so any ideas?
Also, where is the SMU reset button; is it the one in the RAM bay above the higher board or is there another?
I'd like to add, this machine is giving a constant Airport connection of 3mb - 4mb + [on a 4.5mb link] whereas my previous one was lucky to give me 500k so it looks like the wires are being connected properly now?
Thanks in advance to all :0)
    B

Yes you can reset PRAM and NVRAM…
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
… in a Mac Pro just like any other Mac.
As for the SMC reset button. Apparently it's placed…
"Press the SMC_RST switch that is located slightly below and to the right of the row of diagnostic LEDs. Use a non-metallic, non-conductive object, such as a wooden pencil."

    thanks all.

Try a SMC reset and see if it will charge.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
You may want to check the info below before, then after the SMC reset.
You can click on the Apple logo in the menu bar holding the option key and click on system information, select power in the left side bar  under the Battery Info and check the battery condition and if it is charging, and other stats. Then pull the charger and see what it says.

  • Herringbone lines, and vertical and horizontal lines on display which dims

I have an iMac G5 purchased in 2005, six months later under the extension program for the video and power issues, Apple installed a new motherboard and a new power pack. Up to now, everything has been okay.
This morning I turned on my computer and saw the same herringbone lines, vertical lines, horizontal lines on the display which went from dark to light in color. I waited for a while, and a message said to restart my computer which I did.
Because of the previous problems, I am wondering if the motherboard or power pack is going out again. After the start up, my computer was okay for the rest of the day. I took some photos and a video of it to show what is happening to the display, any suggestions.

Thanks Scott for the quick reply. Knowing what happened five years ago with the display, I figured that this was the same issue. It is just a matter of time. I quickly backed up my system to another hard drive and wanted to confirm in the discussion group that my G5 was on it's last gasp.
Since I would be lost without my computer, I just put in an order for the new iMac 27" quad core i5 computer. Now I will have to make monthly payments again, but I think that I will have a much faster, and better computer especially with the Intel processor.
Thanks for your reply, and I hope that my new computer will last longer than five years. My track record was five years for my lime green iMac G3, and now five years for my iMac G5.
    Thanks again,

  • Horizontal Lines Across Display

Hello Everyone. I just recently purchased an iPod Nano 8GB Green Engraved and I love it. The only thing that bothers me is that when the brightness level is at 45% and up the display has Horizontal lines dancing across the display. It does NOT hinder the viewing of the iPod and I am extremely sensitive so many people might probably notice it. I am wondering if anybody else experiences this issue and if this is left alone, will there be any future problems with it? I don't want to replace it as it was engraved. Thank You very much for your help!

Hello Deggie. Thank You very much for the help. I think I will just leave it alone, because as I said it does not hinder the use of the product and also I am very sensitive to things like that, so I am probably one of the very few who would notice it.
    Thank You Deggie

  • No Video, Can't Reset PRAM, boot sound/led light/fans all okay - logic brd?

    Hello All,
I'm trying to find out what's wrong with my G5 Tower. When I push the power button on, the led lights up as usual. The fans spin, hard drives/optical drives spin, everything appears normal. However, I get no video. I've tried reseating the video card, disconnecting power for 10 mins, and reseting the pmu on the logicboard.
I believe the problem is either the logicboard or the video card. I tried resetting the PRAM multiple times, but it doesn't work. It's as if I'm not holding down the buttons on the keyboard, or the keyboard is not responding. I've tried a couple different keyboards.
Does this seem like a logicboard thing since I can't reset the PRAM?
Any help or suggestions very welcome!
    Thanks!

Hello Again! Check the voltage of the battery to see if it's 3.6 volts. A weak battery can keep it from starting. I have seen video cards go bad. Have you tried an alternate (if one) slot for the video card? Tom

  • How can I create a horizontal line under a line of text?

    Hi,
    I have FM 12.0.3.424.
Does anyone know how to create a horizontal line under heading text that is the width of the page?  Similar to creating a border but without the top and sides.
    Is it even possible?
    thank you in advance!

Use the "Frame Below" attribute in the Advanced tab of the Paragraph Designer for your heading tag to use a named Reference Frame from your Reference page. If you're using the default templates for your documents, you could try the Single Line selection (or make your own).

  • Satellite A205-s4577 - horizontal lines on display

    I have Satellite a 205-s4577.
There are white horizontal lines on the screen as soon as i start it... it hangs at any point n these lines come up.
Also sometimes it is black background n white box.or simply black.,.
I've contacted customer care and updated drivers but no avail..
It runs on safe and bios mode..
This problem is very frequent when i use ac power supply..
But it runs properly on battery only at first start it hangs,,then works properly
One tech-service centre said motherboard is gone, without seein it jus by description of problem ..
Plz suggest some solution..m in dire need of help

Well, I assume this appears also on external monitor too
    Did you check this?
    Please do this
If the same symptoms would be visible at the external monitor then its GPU related problem I mean the graphic card could be affected and because GPU is a part of the motherboard, then whole motherboard needs to be replaced so the tech service guy could be right

  • IPOD NANO 7G BLACK HORIZONTAL LINES ON DISPLAY

I bought an ipod nano 7g thru amazon in february 2013 and a few days ago some random horizontal black lines appear on the display; I live in Venezuela and the device is still with warranty; what should I do?
    Serial No.: DCYKK5A8F0GR
    Model: MD479LL
    Regards,
    JS

I have the same issue. The programs that cause it on my end are Mail and some of the Adobe products. I'm hoping it's not the video card. Of course, I'm having another issue with the monitor (30") not waking on a cold boot. An Archive and Install did NOT solve the issue, so if it's software related then it's most likely a conflict with software or it's imbedded within the User files.

  • Can't reset PRAM on 2008 8-Core Mac Pro

My Mac Pro has been behaving weirdly for a while, and since it's been years, I figured I'd zap its PRAM. But it doesn't work.
I have an Apple wired keyboard, connected directly to the Mac Pro (no USB hub). But when I restart the Mac holding down cmd-opt-P-R, it's ignored -- it goes straight to the desktop as usual. No cycling of boot-up and no multiple chimes.
    Any ideas why?
(Yes, definitely command and not control. I'm a Mac vet.)

Hi JAso, no worries. glad to help. Yes try and crank up your MP 2008 on another file system with OSX on it. Keep that OSX pure.. no unneeded apps.. duct the basic OS and any S?W updates / maintenance - repair the disk permissions and reboot of the new OSX.. - make user/pwd  jaso .. etc.. be as quick and lean as you need. Keep as maintenance starter
What to look for from restart of new FS ( memory stuck  / FW disk etc):
spritely start up and login.. just like out of the box
fast login to new clean user/
restart it a few times to resolve any "struth that fast!" anomalies...
What to do next if the former is true...:
well it's likely your MP's h/w is healthy and as reliable as ever and..
main file system is a bit buggered and can USUALLY be corrected... (but not always)
the OSX OR the localised goodies in ~/ that you use and a bit crook (r.s.), stale, plotted, bloated and possibly corrupt.
Else.. hmm the MP might need some surgery. The main file system's storage hardware (Macintish HD et al) might be slightly crook.
Anyway all of the is and the really cool things you can do to fix the S/W structures to make you mc kick along is easy to do.
AND.. read this with vigour and enthusiasm..
contrary to many of the sheepish and parroted posts in these forums there is usually NO NEED TO REINSTALL the OS. to fix these slowdown things!
use available tools  to perform basic clean up and some surgery
one or two commercial ISV software.apps you MIGHT optionally purchase to perform filesystem tune ups beyond what OSX offers.
Anyway mate.. see if you can sort out a small OSX standalone system on an external spinning disk .. preferably SATA, eSATA, FW800 .. rear of that .
Oh and is you have a spare FW MAC,, fire up the MP2008 in TARGET MODE (hold 'T' key at startup), slip in a FW 800  cable between each and off you go.. You can checkout the MP's file systems from other Mac.
More Opinion: ALSo Recovery Partition if you have it. Often there's can be unavailable or as corrupt.
THere's tonnes of ways to check this out...WITHOUT whacking th existing OS... thats a subsequent resort.
Post your results for others to see.
