Can't resize partition after upgrading to Yosemite (using SSD drive)
I upgraded to 10.10 and using SSD drive now. When I was using OS X 10.8.5, I could freely resize partition but not anymore. I guess because of the SSD drive and the new version of OS X, and Logical Volume Group could be involved. I don't want to waste 80 GB of SSD drive so really looking for a solution now. Thanks in advance.
Yes, that's exactly what I did. I had to go back to my old snow leopard install DVD, use the disk utility on that to repartition the drive. I made 2 partitions, installed Snow Leopard on one, used that to install Yosemite on the other partition and trashed the snow leopard install.
I haven't yet tried the Yosemite USB install method which would have probably been faster as I could have avoided installing SL.

Can't open Finder after Upgrade to Yosemite 10.10
After the Upgrade to Yosemite 10.10 on my MacBook Pro with Retina Display i can't open the Finder and it says it's not reacting. The bar on top when i'm at the Desktop is also gone.
Can somebody help me ?I had this exact same issue, and I was just able to fix it (at least for now). I'm not an expert by any means, so I can't tell you why my solution worked, but if you follow it and it helps, then great.
First, you'll have to restart your computer and open in Safe Mode. Restart the computer and as soon as you hear the startup noise, press and hold the Shift key. Release it when you see the Apple icon. It will take a little longer to start up.
Then download and install the free software called OnyX.
Once installed, open OnyX and click on the Verifying tab, then click on the Preferences tab. Run the Check button at the bottom. If it tells you that you have any damaged files, double click them on the list, one at a time, and then delete those files.
Then I clicked the Scripts tab, and Executed all three scripts.
Finally, under the Cleaning tab, I clicked on System and executed everything except "CUPS jobs".
I then restarted my computer like it suggested (without opening Safe Mode) and everything was back to normal!
Hope this helps.

Can't watch Netflix after upgrading to Yosemite
I have a MacBook Air, with 4gb, and 2.3 gHz. After I upgraded to Yosemite Netflix stopped working. It gives me an error saying that the "external monitor" is not HD compliant. Have anyone encountered this problem? Have you found a solution?
Thanks. While I did not get your error message, I was also not able to view netflix after a Yosemite upgrade (mac mini late 2009). Deleting and reinstalling silverlight fixed it for me.
Good luck. -
Can not get mail after upgrading to yosemite
I upgraded to yosemite and now get a message when i try to open my mail, that my mail is damaged?
Do a backup.
Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail. Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

Keyboard Short Cuts Buggy After Upgrade Too Yosemite Using Intuos 4
I upgraded my Mac to Yosemite. I am using Photoshop CS6 and Wacom Intuos 4.
Now keyboard shortcuts are buggy or don't work at all. For example brush sizes almost never changes using the right and left bracket keys. Zoom (Z Key) won't work unless I tap on the window once or twice when another tool is selected. A lot of times I have to tap the window once or twice to get shortcuts to work like S-save or W- close window.
Anyone know if this is a Yosemite/Photoshop issue or a Yosemite/Intuos issue? I tossed my Photoshop Prefs and that didn't fix the issue. Any other suggestions?
On a side note after the upgrade to Yosemite I lost my Intuos preference panel in System Preferences and cannot access or change Pen prefs anymore.
Thxs in advance.
Edit: Found the answer in another post.
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1629891
http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-menus-turn-white-mac.htmlThe provided links above take care of the keyboard shortcut issues. As far as Wacom missing prefs this is the information I received from tech support. I haven't actually tried this yet. I don't want to wipe out my current prefs unless I need to change something.
Thank you for contacting Wacom Customer Care. We would need to perform a clean driver install on your computer. Please make sure that you are uninstalling the previous driver in your computer prior to reinstalling a new driver as this would create corrupted driver files.
Also, please unplug the tablet from the computer before starting these instructions. Please follow these steps:
Open your Applications folder and locate any Tablet or Wacom Tablet folders you have Use the Utility in each of these folders and click ‘Remove’ under ‘Tablet Software’
Once the software is removed, restart the computer
Once this is complete, download and install the latest 6.3.10 driver from:
http://cdn.wacom.com/u/productsupport/drivers/mac/professional/WacomTablet_6.3.10w2.dmg
As always, make sure your tablet is connected directly to your computer. Avoid using USB hubs, keyboard/monitor ports, or docking stations with the tablets, as they can cause inconsistent behavior. Also, please make sure that you are connecting the USB cable directly to the USB port at the back of your computer. -
Can't boot from Ubuntu partition after upgrading to Yosemite
When i go to Disk Utility the Ubuntu partition appears as it always have, i had installed since Mavericks refind to boot from any partition. Now refind doesn't work and the alt/option key doesn't work either. Does anyone know a way to fix this?
A extensive report already written is in the Ubuntu stacks as
Dual boot Linux and Yosemite
Basically you need to follow http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/yosemite.html
wherein it explains that Yosemite is using a new LVM bootup from within the Recovery Partitions 10.10.
This messes up REFIT/REFIND tools which have previously installed Partition 1.S
See my current Table below , wherein << are my comments
Current GPT partition table:
# Start LBA End LBA Type
1 40 409639 EFI System (FAT) << old preferred site for REFIT/REFIND tools
2 409640 154061023 Mac OS X HFS+ << main Mac partition
3 154061024 155330559 Mac OS X Boot << Recovery 10.10 , installed by Yosemite update, used to start MAC boot. BUT is not shown by Disk Utility, to prevent its naive deletion which would kill the MAC boot.
4 155330560 156598271 Mac OS X HFS+ << old Recovery 10.9, simply retained
5 157869786 228772129 Unknown << My Ubuntu partition
6 228772130 236765969 Linux Swap << which was shortened by 200 MB to make room for 7)
7 236765970 236974814 Mac OS X HFS+ << installation site of REFIND. Though 4) could have been used, there is a possibility that Apple might have future plans for this small 4) partition.
With 7) created (see detail below), my REFIND install command under MAC, within Downloads/refind-bin-0.8.3/ was:
sudo ./install.sh --alldrivers --ownhfs /dev/disk0s7
There was still required the edit if refind.conf.sample specified in Yosemite.html, which I named refind.conf.edit1
This was copied with:
sudo cp refind.conf.edit1 /Volumes/macefi/System/Library/CoreServices/refind.conf
macefi is my name for the MAC /dev/disk0s7 mount point, equivalent to /dev/sda7 under Linux
CAREFULLY do read Yosemite.html, as the instructions here are too terse by themselves!!!!
There are 2 routes to boot Ubuntu, and then creat 7) with GPARTED
a) If you can access the GRUB shell under an old REFIT/REFIND installation, partitions will be shown by:
grub> ls
Presence of a Linux file system can be confirmed by a command like:
grub> ls (hd0,gpt5)/
Output of
grub > ls (hd0,gpt5)/boot/grub/
should include a grub.cfg file. Then you can boot as usual with
grub > configfile (hd0,gpt5)/boot/grub/grub.cfg
After boot up, start GPARTED
b) Alternatively boot with the Ubuntu install disk, and choose the Demo option
Open a text console, and get admin proviledge with:
$ sudo su
# gparted
Using GPARTED, unmount if necessary any terminal SWAP partition, such as my 6) above
Then shrink the SWAP partition end by a trivial 200 MB,
Create a HFS+ partition in like my 7) for a coming REFIND installation
Note, that a file /etc/fstab contains a SWAP partition specification, which should be edited for automated SWAP start.
# sudo blkid /dev/sda7
will report the SWAP space specs LONG uuid code. This can be copied into memory by dragging the mouse over the uuid
Then SHIFT-CONTROL-C will copy it into memory. Start an edit with:
$ sudo nano /etc/fstab
delete the old swap uuid, and paste in the replacement with
SHIFT-CONTROl-V
and swap should mount upon reboot, or with:
$ sudo swapon -a
Check with:
$ free
which should report none-zero swap space. -
Can't resize partition after deleting old one
I was having issues with my Lion installation, so I added a new partition, installed from scratch and then rebooted and checked it worked before deleting the original partition.
However now I have deleted it I am just left with my smallish system partition and one that says free space, there it no divider to resize them, and I can't go back to 1 partition without it wiping my system, how can I merge my partition and the free space one to get back to a single partition?Yes, that's exactly what I did. I had to go back to my old snow leopard install DVD, use the disk utility on that to repartition the drive. I made 2 partitions, installed Snow Leopard on one, used that to install Yosemite on the other partition and trashed the snow leopard install.

Can't access IPhoto after upgrade to Yosemite
I just upgraded from Snow Leopard to Yosemite and can't access iPhoto. I've tried to install the upgrade, but it just sits there saying Installing, but nothing is working. Tried the IPhoto Upgrader without success. It says that it was not necessary for me to use the upgrader. Help! I need access to all of my pics!
Use Launchpad to cancel the download and try again.

I can't update iPhoto after upgrading to Yosemite.
When I attempt to update iPhoto I get the message, "Unable to update with this Apple ID" "This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled."
I did not purchase iPhoto via the App Store, it was installed on my iMac when I purchased it. How can I get iPHoot working again? This error message will appear erraneously, if you skipped the update to Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5.1 and went straight from an earlier MacS X version to Yosemite, without first updating to iPhoto 9,5.1 and associating it to your AppleID.
Try first to buy iPhoto with your AppleID, as Kappy suggested. Delete iPhoto from Applications, but don't empty the Trash, then go to the main page of the App Store and search for iPhoto. If you are lucky, it will show as free and you can buy it directly.
If it is not showing as free, there is no help but contacting the App Store Support: Ask for a redemption code. You will need to provide a prove of purchase for your mac with iPhoto preinstalled.

Time Machine can't complete backups after upgrading to Yosemite
I use Time Machine to backup my 500GB MacBook Pro and a 500GB external HD to a 1TB Time Capsule (the laptop and external HD are no where near full). It worked fine until I upgraded my computer to Yosemite. Now I'm get an error message, "Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “Time Capsule'. The backup disk needs 425.12 GB for the backup but only 134.74 GB are available. Select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files."
How do I get Time Machine working again (without having to exclude files, of course)? Is there a better way then just wiping out the content of the Time Capsule ad backing up from scratch? Thanks!Hi there The Zach,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps for Time Machine backup issues found in the article below.

Time Machine backup on external drive no longer working after upgrade to Yosemite
Can anyone explain why, after upgrade to Yosemite, Time Machine is no loger working? Backup on external drive stops few seconds after it has started. What can I do?
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Try running a DVD Lens Cleaner disc through it, a little bit of dust or dirt is all it takes to throw them out and it might just be co-incidental with the upgrade. -

I just updated my Macbook (2010) to Yosemite, and it's become very slow. After searching through this community, I downloaded and run EtreCheck, but don't understand what the report means. Please could you help me with what I should do to improve my computer's speed, aside from upgrading my RAM? Thank you so much.

You have had good information here. I will not repeat that here.
I would like to add:
you have incompatible software: start in SafeMode, read Woodmeister and see if it is free of issues.
Akamai is crap software needed or not, Huawei the same.
It is very possible that the keygenerator you used for generating a key for some softwares has infected your mac.
The non-regular software with the false key(s) are not compatible probably or generate malware. Luckily you can not update them automatically because the keygenerator blocked the software for contacting the developer... I propose to consider getting rid of those softwares by really good uninstalling.
You have a beautiful mac, don't degenerate it with crapped software. There are alternatives for expensive software, for example Adobe Photoshop has a free alternative (with a less beautiful interface) in GIMP. And so on.

After upgrading to Yosemite I have lost iPhoto. It has a cross through it in Finder, but I clicked on it and I was directed to download the latest version from the App store, but it is not available in the Australian store. Can anyone please help? I am not an advanced user and I would like my photos back, having had no idea I would lose iPhoto in the upgrade!
Thanks petermac87...but for some reason, the only purchases showing are OS. So assuming iPhoto is in Mountain Lion, I was hoping to look under Hidden Items there as you suggested, but there is no option for that. Only option is to download Mountain Lion again, not iPhoto specifically. Any ideas welcome!
