Can't restart ipod classic.

When I plugged my iPod classic into my Mac this morning to update my newest songs, it said "Battery very low." I suppose that could be, but it would be unusual. I'm pretty religious about keeping my iPods charged.
It's been charging for a couple of hours now, but still won't restart. I can hear the drive spinning up and down ...the Apple logo flashing on for a few seconds, then goes away.
I've tried rebooting a couple of times, but I can't tell if it's actually rebooting, or just spinning off and on like it's been doing while it's charging.
I don't know what to try next.

Hi b.lindstrom,
If you are seeing the Red X on your iPod, then try putting your iPod into Disk Mode and then restore it within iTunes. If that does not work, then you will need to setup service on your iPod. The article below will have more information to help you out.

while updating ipod touch 4 i got an error message now stuck with apple symbol and empty bar. can i restart ipod?

    - What was the error message?
    - Try closing iTunes and then disconnect the iPod from the computer. Then reconnect the iPod.  If the iPod shows in iTunes then you can try again.  However, You should try to resolve the error message first.
    - If iTunes does not see the iPod try reetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - I recommend that you come back with the what the error message said and the condition of the iPod and if it is visible in iTunes.

how can I reset Ipod classic when error message 439 shows?

The easiest solution and apparently the only approved solution via Apple (although a pain if you haven't backed up your device) to restore the phone if you can't figure out the passcode. It will erase everything but if you have a fairly recent backup then you will be fine...you may only lose anything that was added after the last backup. You can also try searching the Apple Support pages and forum to see if there is another solution. Ultimately, it's a plus to a certain degree that there is no easy way to change the passcode....if someone "found" it and wanted to try to get in to it....but it's a pain when it's a situation like yours.

  • Can't restore iPod Classic - Error 1439

I tried plugging in my iPod one day to put new songs on my iPod, but it was freezing my computer and I had to restart my computer. When I restarted my computer, suddenly my iPod was reading 'Plug to computer to restore'. Which is strange itself, because my iPod was fine prior to me plugging it in to the computer. So that's what I did, but my iTunes was having trouble restoring my iPod, and it wouldn't work. So I decided to try it on my laptop (I have iTunes on it too), but now I'm getting the 'Cannot restore, error 1439'. I've tried unplugging and replugging. I've tried rebooting computer. I've tried it on different computers. I've tried changing the port. I've updated iTunes to iTunes 9. I've tried every resolution that iTunes gave in support. Nothing seems to work.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get it to restore? If not, anyone know another way I can restore my iPod without iTunes use?
PS. I have a Windows XP

Here's the Apple Support doc for that error:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1372
Which at a guess suggests it a communnication issue. I'm pretty sure there will be a new build of iTunes out on Monday which might help if the problems originate with the particular build of iTunes (although it works fine for me). It would be worth trying to check out your device on a friend's computer who is not having problems to try to exclude either the iPod, the cable, or the PC as the most likely source of trouble.
    *iPod Diagnostics*
You might also want to run some diagnostics on the iPod just to make sure the problems don't originate there. Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    *Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    *Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.

  • Can't access iPod classic 160GB in Windows and iTunes

    Hello,
after connecting my iPod classic 160GB to computer with Windows Vista I can see it in My Computer but can't access it. In iTunes 10 it not appear and every access via My Computer takes many time. After disconecting iPod is restarting by itself...
But iPod itself is working - a little laggy, but working. One thing changes: about 80GB free space disappear and iPod tells me that only 153KB is free...
I suppose disk failure - how can I access it and repair?

Everything that was on your classic should also have been in your library, and that backed up to another drive. If you manually managed the device, and it was the only location holding your media, and it has become corrupted, there really isn't much hope. See Corrupt iPod classic. There may be a slim chance to recover media stored on it via disc mode if is isn't stored elsewhere, but if it won't mount, or has been reformatted, then the moment has probably passed.

  • Finder can see my iPod Classic, but iTunes can't

When I connect my iPod classic (80GB) to my Mac, it shows up in Finder with an iPod icon, and iTunes launches, but it never shows up in iTunes. There are no error messages, it just doesn't show up.
I've tried restarting my Mac, reinstalling iTunes, refreshing my iPod (hold on/off, hold down menu/select until you see apple logo) several times. I have the newest version of iTunes and my OS is up to date.
Occasionally, it just shows up as a drive in Finder, w/out the iPod icon. But, most of the time, the icon is there and iTunes opens.
How can I restore my iPod if I can't connect to iTunes? I don't know what to do.
    Thanks.

Update - I was able to restore my iPod using my Windows XP machine and now my Mac sees it in iTunes.

  • Continuosly restarting ipod classic

I'm on my second 160GB iPod classic - the first went back with exactly the same issue.
I loaded about 90GB of music on this second one and about 20GB of video. It worked fine yesterday - i was able to play a random set of playlists and the video without any issues. This was synched without album art - which i thought may have been the first one's problem.
    I selectively synch using playlists.
Last night I topped it up with another 10GB or so of video and more music, taking it up to just 7GB showing as free when the synch had finished.
Having disconnected it normally, the main menu came back ok. Clicking on music though caused it to freeze. I reset it through menu-select - and now its continuously restarting. It doesn't get as far as the main meniu being on display, just the Apple logo.
This is the same issue I had with the first one.
I can't find any way to reset it. And the diagnostic mode isn't accessible either.
Any ideas? Is there a way of hard resetting it? note that it doesn't show up in itunes - given its continuously restarting.

I am experiencing this problem as well. I'm getting pretty sick of my iPod. I've already had to reload all my music onto it twice because it's all been mysteriously erased. For $300 for an 80gb Classic you'd think they could make a product that actually works. If this cannot be fixed and Apple does not make this up to me they have lost yet another customer as a result of their shoddy products.
Currently my 80gb is cycling through the reset process, never getting past the Apple logo. Cannot access disk mode, diagnostic mode or anything. It loads the apple screen, then the screen goes black and i hear it make a clicking noise. It does not respond if i plug it into a computer. This happened after I docked it with a new Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere speaker dock. What can be done about this? Do I need to return it to where I bought it? Should I try to return it to Apple? I hope someone from Apple notices this discussion.

  • Windows Vista can't recognize Ipod Classic

I bought an Ipod of a guy yesterday. It's a classic. I did a lot so bare with me here.
It doesnt show up in Itunes.
When I turn off the ipod and turn it back on.
it says the device driver can't be installed and is unrecognized.
I'm installing Windows Servce Pack 2 as we speak in hope that an updated driver is in there.
Someone told me Ipod classics don't work with windows 7 period.
    Someone help me!
Is the updated driver in a service pack?
    Or what?
I just want to listen to music!
I uninstalled and reinstalled Itunes multiple times.
I don't want to keep doing it because it takes forever.
Do I have to download a older version of itunes?
    What do I do?!?!?

Do this 5Rs first and tell me what you see on the iPod Screen, after charging the iPod and  Reset
    To do a Hard Reset
Charge your Ipod for at least 2 hours
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the Red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about10 secs till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.
Here is the Apple support Article on the 5Rs

  • Can't access IPod Classic when charging

    Hi All...
I have 30GB Ipod classic. When I plug it into the computr to charge (USB), I see a flashing red circle with line thru it in the middle fo the screen with message Do Not Disconnect.
While it is charging I cannot clear this fromthe screen and listen to the stuff on the Ipod. Is there something wrong or is this by (very very very bad) design?
How can I listen to the Ipod while it is charging?
I tried to eject the device from systray icon, but when I do that, it stops charging?
    Help please.
    Thanks in advance.

This is because the iPod is being synced to the computer, which means that it is being updated and the information on it is being changed. While that is happening you cannot do anything with the iPod. Once it has finished syncing, (when the message *iPod sync is complete - OK to disconnect* displays in the top of the iTunes window) you can click on the *Eject iPod* button which you will find in the bottom right hand of the *iTunes summary screen* (not the systray icon) and which will "disconnect it" from iTunes but allow it to continue charging. You can then listen to it while it is still plugged in and charging.

No, nothing wrong with it or the design. It is syncing as well as charging. If you try to "use" the iPod while it's being updated that would confuse it!
I tried to eject the device from systray icon, but when I do that, it stops charging?
That is not the correct (or best) method of disconnecting the iPod. As I stated above, you should use the *Eject iPod* iPod button.
By the way, there is no such model as a 30GB Classic, perhaps yours is a 5th generation or photo iPod? See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61688 for information on identifying your iPod model.

  • Can't Eject iPod Classic in iTunes 10

After syncing my 160G iPod Classic with iTunes 10, I could not eject the iPod Classic in iTunes 10. It says the iPod is being used by another Application (when there is NONE except iTunes 10). I had to quit iTunes 10, and eject the iPod Classic via Finder Window. There were a couple of times where I had to perform OPTION-APPLE-ESC before I could eject the iPod Classic. Is there something wrong with this version of iTunes - anybody having same problem? Or could it be my PPC iBook G4? <Don't think so.>
With all the complaints I've read about iTunes 10 (yah, the icon does look horrible, Steve, despite what you may say - it looks soooooo 'bland'), I suspect it's the latest-but-no-longer-greatest software, iTunes 10.
    Any suggestions/assistance is greatly appreciated.
Else, I may go back to the earlier version, where I had no problems at all.
    Much thanks in advance.
    Regards.

I'm having a similar problem ... nothing but problems with iTunes 10
In my case, my iPod nano is showing up as a device in Finder and even when I eject it from iTunes it remains in the Finder for some time. When I reconnect the nano then iTunes starts playing music, but the nano does not appear in iTunes (although it shows up again in Finder.)
I have to restart iTunes for the nano to show up again. Disk use is not enabled. I've also had problems with the nano occasionally showing up with the incorrect info (image etc.) in the Summary window.
I had none of these problems until I upgraded to iTunes 10 (other than it showing up in the Finder.)
I suspect it will not be easy to go back to iTunes 10 because iTunes 10 upgraded the iTunes Library (as far as I remember.)

  • Can't restore iPod classic 60GB video.  Cannot Allocate Memory - Disk Utility

Sorry if this has been asked before but I've been searching the boards and am yet to find a result.
I have an old iPod classic 60GB (video) which has a dodgy HDD.  It was clicking and in a constant sad face/charging loop.  I've managed to get it display "Please restore iPod" message and it is now being recognised by my macbook.  I've tried to restore it via iTunes but when I try that I get an error message tht says "The iPod could not be restores because it is busy".
I've tried toformat the iPod using Disk Utility too but i get an error:
Disk Erase failed with the error:
POSIX reports: The operation couldn’t be completed. Cannot allocate memory
The oddest thing is that under disk utility my iPod drive is showing up as a 2TB drive:
All I'm realy trying to do is restore the iPod so I can try to recover some of the tracks using Disk Drill.  Can anybody help?

See if you can find a window based PC and try to do a Restore there.

  • Can't register IPOD Classic

Everyone, this sounds really easy. I had a nano previously and it was easy. I just plug it in and the screen comes up and it charges and syncs. Well, I lost it and my wife got me an Ipod Classic. I'm doing the same thing, I plug it in, but no screen comes up. I put in a cd and ask the comp to import it using Itunes, to get my screen. It then shows my device.
Now I need to register it. When the register screen comes up in the itunes window, it's so big that I can only read the left half of the screen. You have the scroll lever on the side to go up and down but you don't have one going left and right. I also dragged the screen to the left, and put my cursor on the right edge of the itunes screen until it shows the left right arrow. It can move left, which shortens the page but it can't move any further to the right.
I've hit the enlarge window and nothing. I hit the views, and nothing. I can only read half of the page and can't register my IPOD.
Last thing, I don't see any special code for the IPOD classic, will I need one?

    Hi, kiki-just sorted our problem.
Go into Control Panel, Display and settings and increase the size of the pixel settings -worked for me-regards,
