Can't restore backup from AT&T iPhone to Verizon iPhone

I have an AT&T iPhone 3Gs and a new Verizon iPhone 4 (different phone numbers). I want to transfer everything from my old phone to my new one, but I haven't been able to restore a backup from one device to the other. The techniques documented in Apple Support article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109 did not work for me.
When I first connected the new phone to iTunes to actviate it, I was not given the option to restore from backup as documented in the article. The new phone was activated and then synced, so it picked up apps etc from my old phone, but not the data and settings that can only be restored from a backup.
I tried using the Restore from Backup menu item, but the only backup on the list is the one from the new phone, not the old one (the phones have different names in iTunes). I even tried this with both phones connected to iTunes at the same time, but no luck.
I also tried using iTunes to restore the new phone to its original settings. After I did that, I was given the option to restore from a backup, but once again only the new phone's backup was available on the list.
I'm guessing this is happening because the two phones are from different carriers, but restoring form a backup doesn't overwrite the firmware, so I would think it it's technically possible to move everything from the AT&T phone to the Verizon phone. The support article does say that the instructions are for transferring data to a new phone from the same carrier. but it doesn't explicitly say this can't be done when moving to a new carrier.
I'll eventually be able to get my new phone configured like my new one, but I was hoping I could do this in one shot. Is there some other option for doing this that I'm overlooking?

When I sync photos in iTunes, using the iPhoto option, it won't copy pictures from my phone to iPhoto, it just copies imported photos from the iPhoto library to my phone.
Correct - as designed and intended. iTunes does not handle the import of photos from any digital camera including from the iPhone's Camera Roll. When there are photos/videos in your iPhone's Camera Roll, your iPhone is also detected as a digital camera when connected to your computer.
The only imported photos I have are some that I previously imported from my phone, at which point they were converted from the iPhone format to whatever format iPhoto uses.
What?
iPhoto does not convert ANYTHING when importing photos from a digital camera including when importing photos from the iPhone's Camera Roll. There is not an iPhone format for photos and a iPhoto format for photos. Photos captured by the iPhone are in JPEG format, which is not changed by iPhoto when being imported from the iPhone's Camera Roll. iPhoto supports a number of common/open formats and doesn't change the format of anything. iPhoto is a photo viewer and management application.
I don't want those pictures back on my phone, I want my phone's pictures in iPhoto (actually, I just want them on the new phone).
You don't want the photos that are in your previous iPhone's Camera Roll on your new iPhone? OK. The photos in iPhoto on your Mac that you selected to be transferred to your previous iPhone can be selected to be transferred to your new iPhone under the Photos tab for your new iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. If you want the photos that are in the Camera Roll on your previous iPhone available on your new iPhone, you must import these photos from your previous iPhone's Camera Roll with iPhoto. You can then transfer these photos from iPhoto to your iPhone via the iTunes sync/transfer process. This will be the ONLY way you will get these photos available on your new iPhone since you are unable to transfer the backup for your previous iPhone to your new iPhone.
I can use iPhoto to import everything from my old phone, and then sync my new phone from iPhoto, but the images will get converted twice, from iPhone to computer format on the import, and from computer to iPhone format on the sync. If that's a lossless conversion, I guess that's okay, but I was hoping for something more direct.
Wrong. There is no conversion by iPhoto when importing photos from a digital camera including when importing photos from the iPhone's Camera Roll. When transferring photos from iPhoto on your computer via the iTunes sync/transfer process which is selected under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, the photos are optimized for viewing on your iPhone as part of the iTunes sync/transfer process, which cannot be turned off or changed.
And you don't want these photos optimized for viewing on your iPhone why?
It seems iTunes photo sync is only intended to transfer photos from your computer to your mobile device, not the other way around.
Correct, by design and intention.

  • Can I restore backup from another mac with time machine?

I would like to restore files from a TM backup from another Mac - is this possible? Thanks.

I'm not sure I know how to help. I use OS X Server's Time Machine services from a Mac Mini to do my back ups to a drive connected to that server. I have the same user account on one MBP Retina that does not do back ups as another MBP Retina that DOES back ups. However, I can't even open the sparse bundle from the one that doesn't do back ups of the one that does (if that makes sense).
You might try and see if this link helps. This guy was the TM guru around here. He might have addressed a solution to what you're trying to do.

    Hi beckiewinter!
I have some information for you that may help you understand your iPhone's Activation Lock more thoroughly:
iCloud: Find My iPhone Activation Lock in iOS 7
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5818
So in order to update your iPhone, you may need to turn off Find My iPhone. This can be done through the iCloud settings, and more information on those settings can be found right here:

  • IPhone 6 photo and video retrieval after restoring backup from my old iPhone 5 unit

    Hi,
I was so excited to use my new iPhone 6 and started taking photos and videos with it. Not to mention that the photos and videos were of my all-time favorite artist during his much-awaited concert . When I got home, I forgot to download all the media files first to my desktop before performing "restore backup" via iTunes so all my old iPhone 5 settings could be duplicated in my new iPhone. Now, I can only access the photos/videos taken from my iPhone 5 in my iPhone 6. Not sure if I could still retrieve the new photos/videos taken recently using my iPhone 6 when they seem to have been overwritten by my old iPhone files. Please help.
    Thanks!

Correction: the message that iTunes hangs at for hours on end was "Waiting for changes to be applied".

  • When I turn on my new iPhone 5s, I have to select a language and county and then my only options are to restore backup from iTunes or restore from iCloud.  I have already restored form iTunes, so what am I doing wrong?

When I try to turn on my new iPhone 5s, the ONLY options it gives me is to either backup from the iCloud or restore backup from iTunes.  I have already restored the backup from iTunes, so I don't know why it keeps telling me to restore the backup.  And why won't it give me any other options?  I can't text, call, etc.  My phone will do NOTHING.
    Any suggestions?

It seems you restored from a blank back up if it is still asking you to choose one of those options. Set it up as new then manually restore from back up with iTunes on your computer and be sure to check the date of the back up an which phone the back up is from.

    Which password?
If you mean the passcode to your iPhone, here's the solution:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212
If you mean the encryption password to your backup on your computer:
Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

  • Even though iOS cannot restore backups of newer devices, can it restore data from an older device using 7.1.2 to a newer device using iOS8

    Hi ,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you cannot use your Wi-Fi after the latest update to your iPhone 4s. I know you have already done some great troubleshooting by restoring with iTunes but the Wi-Fi becomes unavailable very quickly after you set it up. Go ahead and set up the iPhone so you can get into the Setting and then follow the steps provided in the attached article.
iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1559
         Resolution
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
    Restart your iOS device.
Make sure that airplane mode is off by tapping Settings > Airplane Mode.
Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
Make sure that your device is using the latest software. To do so, connect your device to your computer and check for updates in iTunes.
If you complete all of these steps and still are not able to access the Wi-Fi, it may be necessary to follow the link at the bottom of the page and contact Apple Support.
    Have a great day,
    -Joe

  • I am setting up my Iphone 6 but keep getting an error message "cannot restore backup from Icloud...I backed up my old Iphone 5 just yesterday...Any suggestions?

During setup of Iphone 6 I keep getting error message "cannot restore backup" from Icloud.  I backed up my old Iphone 5 yesterday.  Is it because of different operating systems? Please help. Thanks!

Does your iPhone 5 IOS is later than iPhone 6 IOS?
If true, you need to update your iPhone 6 before you can restore from your backup.
If not, is iPhone 6 connected to power supply?

Yes, if you're restoring from iCloud.  No, if restoring from iTunes.

Yes, if that new data hasn't been backed up yet.

  • How do I prevent icloud from overwriting my contacts when doing a restore backup from PC to iphone?

My icloud contact list is screwed up. I have my contact list in my PC backup. I've removed icloud from iphone AND changed apple ID and icloud ID, yet when I attempt to restore backup from PC to iphone, my correct contact list shows up momentarily, then reverts to the screwed up icloud contact list.
I understand that my PC backup is set to connect to icloud; however, one would think by removing the email address associated with apple or icloud that it would not be able to connect to icloud when I do a restore backup from PC to iphone. Yet each time I find icloud connected via my old email address after attempting the restore.
How do I fix this? This seems like an icloud bug, since it connects via my old email/ID.

The problem may be that the iphone is immediately syncing with icloud and losing the newly restored data.  You might turn off your router.  Once restored, turn off icloud on the device, turn on the router, then turn on the iphone.
(I'm going by memory on this, and that hasn't been too reliable lately.)
