Can't restore backup with disk utility: "Operaton not permitted"

OK, my imac 2.8 alum hard drive broke down. i backed it up before it failed, and have been using the firewire drive i backed up to as the startup with my second mac (a mini) for the last week.
Now trying to restore the backup back to the imac with the new drive. the backup is 210gb, the new partition is 250gb.
But the disk utility has been giving me this error:
2009-04-08 01:09:38 -0700: Copying
2009-04-08 01:28:13 -0700: could not copy /Volumes/Blank Slate/bin/.BC.7setUX; Operation not permitted
2009-04-08 01:28:13 -0700: Bom copy exited with error 1
2009-04-08 01:28:13 -0700:
2009-04-08 01:28:13 -0700: Could not restore - Operation not permitted
2009-04-08 01:28:14 -0700: Could not restore - Operation not permitted
2009-04-08 01:28:15 -0700:
Any thoughts?

It means that Disk Utility is choking on the hidden file .BC.7setUX buried in /bin. That file doesn't exist on my machine. Launch the Terminal app, type in this command, hit the return key, and quit the Terminal app;
*rm /bin/.BC.7setUX*
Now, try restoring again.

  • Restore image with Disk Utility

In Lion I miss the checkbox in the restore section of Disk Utility to NOT erase the volume I want my image to restore to. In Snow Leopard I was able to uncheck this box and Disk Utility then did a file restore instead of a block copy. The result was a completely defragmented volume. Is there an option to get a similar result in Lion?
    Thanks!

If you need to defragment your drive, then the safest and fastest way to do so is:
    1. Get an empty external hard drive and clone your internal drive to the external one.
    2. Boot from the external hard drive.
    3. Erase the internal hard drive.
    4. Restore the external clone to the internal hard drive.
Clone the internal drive to the external drive
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    After startup do the following:
    Erase internal hard drive
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your internal hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.  Do not quit Disk Utility.
Restore the clone to the internal hard drive
    1. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    3. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the internal hard drive. Source means the external startup drive.
Note that the Source and Destination drives are swapped for this last procedure.
Alternatives to the above are using one various defragmentation utilities such as iDefragment or Drive Genius. But these utilities have to move data around on the drive resulting in slower times plus the greater risk of file corruption or disk directory corruption. The above method gives the same result - a fully defragmented drive plus a backup to boot.

  • How can I completely restore my mac when I haven't made a backup and my hard drive can't be repaired with Disk Utility?

If I use FireWire target disk mode to copy the entire hard drive to another external drive can I then erase the damaged hard drive, reinstall Lion with it's handy recovery function and copy everything back as it was?
I have an iMac (using Time Machine) which contains much of what is on the damaged MacBook Pro but the laptop has music and photos that only exist there... So can I restore the laptop from the iMac's Time Machine backups?
Just wanted some advice before I take the plunge...
    Thanks,

Maybe.  But you'd be better off to make a "bootable clone," via CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper, or the Restore tab of Disk Utility.  Then you can start up from the clone (hold the Option key while starting and select it from the display you'll get after a few moments), and make sure everything's there (at least as well as on your internal HD).
I'd then strongly recommend also making a second backup, on a separate HD, "just in case" something goes wrong with the first one before you get this fixed.  That doesn't happen often, but it does happen.
But . . . are you sure you have to erase the HD?  If it's directory damage, you may be able to fix it.  See #6 in Using Disk Utility, start with the yellow box there.

Yes, you can do that, by erasing the internal HD, installing OSX, then using Setup Assistant when it first starts up, to set it up just like the iMac.  See Using Setup Assistant on Lion.
But try to fix the problem first;  if that doesn't work, try the "clone" method.  If it works, you won't lose the stuff on the MBP.
I guess I don't need to remind you, once this is sorted out, to make regular backups of the MBP, do I?

  • Can't restore DV7 with disks purchased from HP

HP Pavilion dv7-4173us Entertainment Notebook PC, Windows 7 Home
This spring I had an internal kernel error and sent my pavilion back to have it fixed.  When I got it back it worked but I couldn't use the online help as it wouldn't connect.  Recently I got the Fedex Virus on it I downloaded Malwarebytes and got that cleared up but got a bad update from Microsoft so I restored it to a previous time.  It's still fubar in that I cannot access my documents or anything else like that.  I want to restore it with the disks I got from HP but they don't work. I've tried starting the computer with the first disk in and it wirred a bit but only came up asking if I wanted to open it to look at the files.  I'm at a loss as to what to do now.  Quite frankly, I'm considering using a sledge hammer on it and just chalking it up as a dud.  Anyone know how to actually get this thing to work?  The disk just says to insert it and follow the onscreen directions which have yet to appear.  Thanks.

    Hi,
I would try wiping the Hard Drive first and then reinstalling the Operating System.
Download and install Killdisk on the link below - ( this application will write zeros to the entire drive ).
    http://software.lsoft.net/KillDiskSuiteFree-Setup.exe
Download and install ImgBurn on the link below.
    http://download.cnet.com/ImgBurn/3000-2646_4-10847481.html
Go to the Kill Disk application you have installed in All Programs, open the main folder, then select Bootable Disk creators and from that select Bootable DOS CD Creator which will burn the bootable ISO to a blank CD.
During the next process do not worry about any warnings as your Recovery DVDs will reformat the HDD.
Insert this CD in to your PC that is unable to load Operating System properly. Shut the notebook down, then start it again to boot from the Killdisk CD and follow the on screen instructions for Kill Disk.
A brief description of the process is here Killdisk.
Use this to wipe the whole of the Hard Drive, highlight (80h) and press f10 ( you will also have to type a confirmation and hit enter ) - ( this will make sure you include all partitions and then start the process - this may take a couple of hours! ).
When the process is complete, remove the Killdisk CD and try the installation again.

  • My Firewire drive isnt mounting - can be seen in the disk utility but not mounting.

I have an older MicroNet 500GB Harddrive that has always been picky about what cables it uses. I used it not that long ago to download a mass amout of files to transfer from one computer to another and it mounted no problem. My iMac is newer bought it last year and has the 800 FW port and the Mirconet has a 400 FW and 2 800 FW ports.
I have tried multiple cables 800 to 800, 400 to 800, etc. I can see the drive in my Disk Utility and have run the first aid protocols to no avail. It refuses to mount to my computers...
Any one have any advice before I spend $200-300 to extract the data at Best Buy.
Thanks so much for any advice.

Was the external hard drive connected to a Mac or PC, when you transferred the large amount of files to it?  I'm wondering if it has a corrupted directory, and needs a third-party product like DiskWarrior (which is better than Disk First Aid) to straighten it out.  It's possible that the FireWire bridge board in the external case is bad (which could explain its hypersensitivity to cables used).  I wouldn't pay $200-$300 for data retrieval, before exhausting less expensive options, assuming that the drive's warranty has expired.  Examine the case to see how it's held together - often the cover sleeve is secured to the rear plate with small screws that can be removed.  Sometimes, one screw is covered with warranty-void tape, which can be peeled back/off.  If it's a plastic case, you may run into problems.  Some plastic cases have hidden snap latches, that require a special tool to release without breaking them.  If you can remove the case's cover, you can access the bare drive.  Remove its mounting screws (either on the side or bottom of the drive) and disconnect the data and power cables.  With the drive removed, you can use an adapter like this one, which will adapt the IDE or SATA interface of the drive (whichever it has) for connection to a USB 2 port on your computer.  This is a generic piece of hardware - you don't need to buy one marketed for use with Macs.  If the drive doesn't have a mechanical and/or electronic problem, it should mount on the desktop.

  • Can't restore backup with old Apple ID

    Hi.
I have changed the email address I use for my Apple ID, its the same account, but a different email is used as the user name.  Everything has appeared to be working fine.for some time, including the automated backups to iCloud.
I then got a new iPhone and thought I could just restore the iCloud backups and all would be fine, but when I tried I was prompted to enter the password for my old email address as a Apple ID.
How do I fix things so the old Apple ID isn't there and I only have to enter my password for the email address for the Apple ID as it is now.
How do I ensure the backups I have of my iPhone are going to work if I ever need em.
I ended up having to backup to and restore from iTunes for my new iPhone, the iCloud backup seems useless.
    Thanks
    Dave

    HI Ross,
Go to Manage your Apple ID and change the current Apple ID back to the old email address (do not verify it - this is only temporary. Do not change your password)
Once you have changed it to the old ID, use your current password to proceed
Once you have completed what you are trying to do, change your Apple ID back to the new ID
    Cheers,

  • Music Server Can't See External Drive Formatted for WIN with Disk Utility.

Is there any reason an external drive formatted for WIN (MS-DOS(FAT)/FAT32 or NTFS w/ NTFS-3G/MacFUSE) with Disk Utility would not work for intended purpose? I have a music server (Bryston BDP-1) that uses an attached USB drive for storage/playback of music and can only read FAT32 or NTFS formatted drives. I've tried both and neither is readable by the BDP-1, yet I have no problem reading/writing to the supplied 2GB Thumb Drive (FAT32), as well as another 2GB Thumb Drive (FAT32). Get Info shows; "FAT32" for all drives formatted as such.
Note: From what I'm told the BDP-1 uses a scaled down version of Linux for it's OS. Isn't that UNIX? Shouldn't it be compatible (Read/Write) with other platforms (i.e, Mac)? Bryston says the reason they use it because it's Open-Source. Does Linux only work FAT32 or NTFS?
I do have Fusion/XP, also access to WIN PC's, but I just hate to use it when I shouldn't have to. It makes no sense why the drive can't be read by the BDP-1 when formatted for WIN under OS X.
And there was one other issue, after the third try to format fro WIN the external drive suddenly began making faint clicking sounds instead of a spinning drive sound only when plugged into BDP-1 USB port. But it works fine when connected to iMac FW.
    HW Specs:
    Drive: G-Drive Mobile USB/FW 750GB

    Exchanged drive. Works now.

  • Using Automator with Disk Utility

I'm new to using Automator. I want to create a work flow with Disk Utility but is doesnt appear in the applications list. How do I make Disk Utility work with Automator?

If a program doesn't appear in the list, that means that Apple hasn't written actions for it yet.
You can still use Automator with Disk Utillity, but you will need to use Applescript and the 'Run Applesript' action to operate Disk Utillity.
Unfortuately the 'how' is beyond my knowledge, and the scope of this post.

  • Disk Utility is not working for me.

I have had a nightmare trying to install a Boot Camp partition on my brand new 27" iMac with 3TB Fusion Drive and running 10.8.4.
When trying to use Boot Camp Assistant, it would start the partition, then not finish.  I quit BCA, tried repairing both the partition and the disk, that didn't help either.  So I went into Disk Utility to create a new partition with no file system on it, assuming I could just use Boot Camp Assistant to format it when the partition was created.  It would start, but not finish.  I tried Repairing the disk and the partition, neither helped.
So I booted with CMD+R, launched Disk Utility, and tried to create a 500GB empty partition.  It started and just never quit, so I CMD+Q, got out of it, went back to Disk Utility, I found that I now have a 1.22TB empty partition and a 1.78TB Mac Partition.  This is probably my own fault, I should have just let it run, but after 20 minutes, it wasn't moving.
I figured that would work okay, so I tried installing with BCA, but found it's looking for an HFS+ partition to resize and wouldn't work with an empty partition, so I figured I'd just format the empty partition as HFS+ and install with BCA.  Unfortunately, I can't get Disk Utility to format the partition.  I select the empty space, it puts a white block on it like normal titled Untitled 2, I select Mac OS Extended (Journaled), hit apply, something flashes very briefly over the "capacity" line, and then nothing happens.  Hit revert and it shows up with the Macintosh HD partition and the empty partition.  No matter what format I choose, nothing happens.  If I try to exit, it tells me that changes have not been saved.
I'm trying to just extend the Mac partition, but the resizing option is not available.  I can't drag it to cover the Free Space partition, I can't type in the Size to resize it by number, I can't do anything.  I've tried to repair the disk and the partition, nothing happens.  I can't reclaim the space no matter what I do.
At this point, all I want to do is recover the entire space of the hard drive for Mac OS.  I'll try again with Boot Camp Assistant after Apple works the kinks out.
    Any help would be appreciated.

The Boot Camp Assistant in 10.8.4 should be able to partition your 3TB+ drive so you can have Windows. If Disk Utility is not working then your disk is corrupt. Backup all your data using Time Machine. Erase the volume and restore from Time Machine backup. You can use the ‘OS X Recovery Disk Assistant’ (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433). Open Recovery Disk Assistant and follow the on screen instructions to create a Recovery HD on the external drive. When the Recovery Disk Assistant completes, the partition will not be visible in the Finder. To access the external Recovery HD, connect the drive, then restart the computer and hold the Option key. Select Recovery HD from the Startup Manager. You would need to re-install Mountain Lion up to 10.8.4.  Then ran Boot Camp Assistant and then install Windows.   Once you have confirmed that Windows is running then open up Migration Assistant (in the utilities folder) and migrate your Time Machine backup back on to the hard drive.

  • Can Time Capsule hard drive be accessed with Disk Utility? I'm having issues...

How does one mount , inspect , verify , and possibly repair a Time Capsule hard drive  with Disk Utility ?
My 500Gb 1st gen Time Capsule  ( used wireless with Airport)  has quit backing up new data . ( iMac Core2Duo, Snow Leopard) .  TC  says it needs 238 Gb of available space, but only has 35 Gb available. So it quit doing new  incremental backup altogether. It's almost like it wants to start over.
Airport connection seems good.  Time Capsule seems healthy enough ( for being 3.5 years old) .  I really dont want to lose the data on the existing backup.
What is the nature of this glitch ?

I'm sorry , LaP , but " Time Capsule become too full " is not the cause of my problem .
In fact, I just got done pruning the iMac system hard drive a little  to free up some  10 Gb of new space , yet created only maybe 1-2 Gb of new data to archive. The TC had been doing regular daily backups without issue and Time Machine  was showing me stuff from about ten days back.
The TC informed me it needed 235 Gb of space but only had 34 Gb available. That 235 Gb needed is totally in error.  My problem more resembles corrupt hard disk directories . Maybe Permissions ?  which is why I asked about using Disk Utility.
Yes, I do need a newer larger TC, but pigs don't fly and money does not grow on trees to make tha happen. The backup I have now is fine and should work if I need to restore anything in the forseeable. New data will not be archived, alas.

  • Since you can no longer backup to disk, how to restore from external drive without losing all ratings and playlists

since you can no longer backup to disk, how to restore from external drive without losing all ratings and playlists?

My own opinion is that you should install the later appropriate version of Silverkeeper. That said, I would in fact recommend if you can wait a few days for an answer, that you email the La Cie Silverkeeper backup team via the email link on the site at http://www.lacie.com/silverkeeper/
They are careful to say they are not officially providing a backup service, but when I emailed them with a query regarding usage about a year ago after downloading Silverkeeper for myself, I got a reply within a couple of days that cleared up my question.

  • Cant restore my macbook with Disk utility and my .dmg image

My macbook would not boot anymore. Stuck on gray screen with apple logo, spinning wheel and a loading bar for a while after shutting off.
I was able to get to Disk Utility in the recovery mode and, after a while, was able to make an image of my filesin an attempt to back them up.
The .dmg was put on an external and i checked it on my imac, i could open the .dmg file and browse all my files from my macbook, so those are safe!
After that i tried to wipe the SSD of my macbook and put the image back but that didn't work, also some resource is busy errors.
After trying this a few times without succes i figured i'd try to do a clean install. This worked.
My macbook air is working again but if Iuse Disk Utility in the recovery now and try and restore my image (.dmg file) it gives me Restore Failure; An error (-16) occured (resource busy) as well. I also tried to copy the dmg onto my macbook and run disc utility when booted into OSX. I open up the back up .dmg with Disk utility, then i go to my macbooks partition (Macontiosh HD) and use that as a destination and drag the mounted image as the source as shown on the image below. Am I doing something wrong here?
Doing this i get an error as well: (-119,930,878) Resource busy as you can see.
What can i do to get my image back on my macbook? Any 3rd party software?
I considered just transferring the files after opening the .dmg file but this works only for documents and not for programs and settings of the default apps.
I've looked all over the Internet and it seems more people have had this error but then with making the image, they also suggest unmounting the destination disk before trying to restore but my destination is Macintosh HD, i cant really unmount that can i?
    Thanks in advance!

To make a clone, in the future you need to use a program like superduper or carbon copy cloner.
Either program makes an identical clone while preserving certain system files and marking/indicating to OS X that the clone is bootable.
Using Disk Utility to make a DMG was a good idea, but this will not yield a bootable image.
If Disk Utility could do a 1:1 copy of everything, then people would be using it to rip/duplicate DVDs.
But Disk Utility does not (it leaves out certain invisible/system files), hence it cannot duplicate/clone a hard drive or DVD.

  • Can you use the "Restore" function in Disk Utility to clone MacBook Pro HDD and make a bootable copy?

I'm cloning my MacBook Pro's HDD to a SSD and didn't really want to install another app (SuperDuper, CCC), can I just use the Restore function in Disk Utility app to clone it and make a bootable copy on my SSD?
    Thank you for the help!

    Yes.
Clone Yosemite, Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

I created a partition on my iMac drive. I have trashed the files that were in the partition but I can not trash the icon. I tried with Disk Utility. Any ideas?

If I understand correctly,  the partition will still be on the disk and therefore mounted on the desktop. You would need to remove that partition to remove the icon.
Be careful if you try this, don't upset the main Macintosh HD partition or you may lose the OS and your files.
And always have a full tested backup of your system before modifing disk partitions.
