Can't restore from older backups

MacBook Air failed after upgrade to 10.5.4. Reinstalled from original Leopard Mac OS X DVD with the intention of doing full restore from Time Capsule backup immediately prior to update.
Time Capsule doesn't recognise backups prior to the Leopard reinstallation. Since I used the wrong install disc (standard Leopard rather than MacBook Air version) I can't use Remote Disk and my SuperDrive appears to go unrecognised, so I can't use the "Restore" option from the installation DVD. I can see the backups in the Finder on the Time Capsule disc, I just can't get to them...

Can you run Migration Assistant and restore from your Time Capsule backup that way?

  • Can I restore from older backup?

My cousin had an "application not responding" problem with Address Book on her Mac. She quit out and when she opened it again all her contacts were gone. She had already plugged in her iPhone and it synced the empty address book to her iPhone erasing everything.
By the time she called me, she had already gone into address book too many times and her AddressBook.data.previous was empty.
So, is there away she can use whatever is in her Application Support/Mobilesync/Backup folder to restore stuff from yesterday to her iPhone, which she could then sync back to the computer?
    Thanks.

    Hi!

  • Can you restore from a backup that was made on a previous version of iOS?

    Hello.
I had an iPhone 3GS unning whatever the latest proper version of iOS currently is at the time of writing (4.3.5, is it?) but on Saturday I was on a rather drunken night out and I lost my phone.
    Silly me.
But I was out of contract and the new iPhone (4S or 5 or whatever) is going to be announced on Tuesday next week (just been confirmed by Apple today) so I'm just going to make do with an old, spare Nokia until the new iPhone is available in the UK.
Once the new iPhone launches I will buy it, plug it into iTunes and just restore from backup and I'm back in business.
Except for one thing... The new iPhone will have iOS 5 installed and my last backup before I lost my 3GS was done on iOS 4.3.5.
Is this going to be a problem or can you restore from a backup made with an older version of the OS?
I've never done it before so I don't know.
    J

You "should" have no problem doing that. I say should, because you can't restore a backup made with a higher iOS on a device running a lower iOS, I.E. - you can't restore a backup made from a device running, let's say iOS 4.3.5 on a device running iOS 4.2.10. However, iOS 5.0 will present many new features and since it has not been released, I have no way of stating with certainty that doing as you plan will not present any problems. Past history indicates it won't, but we'll have to wait & see.

  • My phone is stuck in recovery mode, and iTunes will only let me restore to factory settings.  My question: Can I restore from iTunes backup after restoring to factory settings?

I attempted to update to iOS 8 and now my phone is stuck in recovery mode, and iTunes will only let me restore to factory settings.  My question: Can I restore from iTunes backup after restoring to factory settings?

    Hi, kformagg
I would say yes. I once had the same problem (iPhone 5, IOS 7) and first restored to factory settings and after that from iCloud backup.
    It worked very well.

  • How do I restore from older backups on iCloud

How do I restore from older backups on iCloud?

Go to Settings>General>Reset, tap Erase All Content and Settings (which will erase the phone), then go through the setup screens on the phone and when given the option, choose Restore from iCloud backup.  Sign into your iCloud account, agree to the terms and conditions and you will then be asked what backup you want to restore from.  (Apple states that it maintains your three most recent backups.)

  • Iphone 4 went into recovery mode when trying to restore, only option available now is to "restore and update" however this will not work, how can you restore from a backup once in recovery mode and only option is "restore and upgrade"? Please help!

iPhone 4 went into recovery mode when trying to restore it. Now the only option iTunes allows is for "restore & upgrade", it is not offer an option to restore from a backup, says that must first do the upgrade, when attempting to do the upgrade the iPhone won't accept it.
How can I restore from a back up in recovery mode when the only option is "restore and upgrade"?
    Please help.

You don't you must restore your phone first and then you will have the option to restore from your backup.

  • HT1766 Restoring from older backup

Can I restore my iPad to an older backup? I hooked up my iPad to restore it to the last backup, but it auto synced and created a new backup. If I go into Edit/Preferences/Devices I see a list of backups. Can I delete the current backup and restore to the previous?

Right click on the name of your iPad in the Devices list of the iTunes app on your computer and choose Restore from Backup. You should then be able to choose which backup to use.

  • Can not restore from a backup in Time Capture

I reinstalled my computer because some reason. The automatic time machine was always run on this Mac, and I am sure it did a backup just ten minuets before I started to install.  However, I found that I am not able to restore from backup. I can see the computer name but there is a short phase "No Volumes found in this Backup".
I also tried to open the backup file by Finder from anther Mac, but I failed with a notice "Some resource not available".
How could I do to save my data and files???

  • Time Machine doesn't want to restore from older backups

Hi I really am disappointed,I have a Transcend 500GB Hard drive and I have periodically been making backups from my Macbook Pro 13inch,when I tried to restore a file in Time Machine it either didn't respond or I could not move the slider to a different date.I then tried to do a system restore from one of my dates in Time Machine with my Mac OS install CD.It did the backup restore but then told me I had to shut down my Mac,I did but each time it would only come back to that message.I had to do a clean install,But now it seems I have lost all my backups all I want is some files and ma iTunes library. Can anyone help!!!Greatly appreciated.

Were you using your Snow Leopard Install disc? A Leopard disc can't successfully restore a Snow Leopard backup. If that's what you did, just do it over, with the Snow Leopard disc -- it should be fine.
I had to do a clean install,But now it seems I have lost all my backups all I want is some files and ma iTunes library. Can anyone help!!!Greatly appreciated.
If using the Snow Leopard disc doesn't work, repair your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If you haven't done any backups since reloading, don't.
Then see if your backups are there. (You may need to use the +*Browse ...+* option, per #E2 in Troubleshooting.) If so, and if you haven't done any backups since reloading, you may be able to use +Migration Assistant+ to recover your apps, users, data, etc. See the pink box in #19 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for details.

  • Itunes restoring from older backup

so about 3 days ago my mother threw my phone into a pitcher of water and the buttons, speakers, and microphone went out. so before it actually completly dies on me, i wanted to back it up one last time and restore it to see maybe if some of the issues would go away since i need it to last until the iphone 5s comes out. so i backed it up (2 times actually for good measure) and restored it. after restoring it i went to put all my stuff back on it. except the back up i need is not on there. instead it gives me the option to restore from backups it did when i plugged it in to restore my back ups ( basically they're blank back ups since nothing is on them).
but when i go into preferences the back up i need is there, but it has a lock on it and it doesnt show up when i click restore from back up.
i need to use the one from yesterday at 4:58 due to the fact it has all my photos on it (12gb to be exact) and also app data.
is there any way i can use the one that is locked or be able to find my old back ups on my computer? (backed up about every 3-5 days)

  • IPhone app (shapewriter) is corrupted. App's no longer in the Store. How can I restore from my backup?

An iPhone app that I love has become corrupted. This app is no longer available in the Store. Can I restore the app from my phone backup? How? Anything to watch out for?
Shapewriter was purchased by Nuance. As most Dragon users will tell you, Nuance treats its customers badly; apparently it does the same to companies it buys. Soon after they bought Shapewriter, they took it down from the store. Rumor has it that they just bought it as a weapon in some patent battle. Sad: it's a really cool app.

No app on the iPod is required.
    - If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected, on a computer browser go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up or conbtinue to show off-line.
    - You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have the iPod play a sound via iCloud.
    iCloud: Erase your device
    iCloud: Use Lost Mode
    - If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
    - Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
    - There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it unless you had iOS 7 on the device. With iOS 7, one has to enter the Apple ID and password to restore the device.

  • Can you restore from last backup, instead of restore from factory settings?

To make this short, my phone is having a few problems. They have been happening ever since my last sync. Is it possible to restore from the last backup, or do I need to do a complete restore? And if the latter, what will be missing after the restore- can I just restore and then put all my music/contacts/video/apps back on? Will I lose any content, such as pictures I have taken on the phone, text messages, calendar events? Is that not what the backup is for?
I believe this is a simple enough question to answer, so thank you in advance!

When restoring an iPhone with iTunes, there are 2 options. From your iPhone's backup, which is the default selection, or as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.
Your iPhone's backup includes data such as most iPhone settings, email account settings, contact info, SMS messages, notes, recent calls, call favorites, photos in your iPhone's camera roll, and 3rd party app settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app. All other data transferred to your iPhone from your computer via the iTunes sync process should remain on your computer.
Photos in your iPhone's camera roll should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.
Contact info and calendar events is designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer. Not a good idea to depend on your iPhone's backup alone for this data and the same for photos in your iPhone's camera roll since your iPhone's backup includes other data.
When restoring, your iPhone will be erased and the firmware will be reinstalled. After the firmware is installed, you will be prompted to restore from your iPhone's backup, which is the default selection. This must be followed by a sync with iTunes to transfer your selected iTunes content including 3rd party apps, and any photos from your computer.
If there is a problem with your iPhone's backup or with the data included with the backup, restoring your iPhone from the backup will also restore the problem.

  • Can I restore from iCloud backup to another device?

My iPod touch 4G logic board snapped in half after soldering it. If I buy a new iPod touch 4G or repalce the logic board can I restore all my purchases to that device or to that new logic board?
Do you also know where can I purchase a 4th generation logic board for a cheap price? My friend is planning on buying me a logic board of ebay for a cheap price, but there's no guarantee that he'll get it because he's up against a bot. Hopefully it isn't a bot.

    - Yes you can restore you replacement iPod from the iCloud backup of the old i{Pod.  Just restore via wifi from the backup and all the iTunes purchases and spme other stuff will be retored to the replacement iPod. You will have to reenter passwords and other keychain items since those are only restored to the same device.
    - That is how I set up my new iPhone 4S. I restored it at the Apple store via wifi from my 4G iPod touch. No problems.
    - I know of no good places for replacement parts.
