Can't Restore iCal and Thunderbird from Time Machine

I erased my hard drive and installed Leopard. I have been using Time Machine to backup to an external drive. I am having problems restoring certain things, like iCal and my email address list in Thunderbird. I get a message regarding "architecture".  I had the install disc for Leopard, so I believe that is what I was using before. The iCal app, as well as other apps, have a "ban" symbol (circle with a diagonal line) on them. Does this mean I was using Tiger before, instead of Leopard?  Help me please.  I erased my hard drive because I upgraded to Snow Leopard, then couldn't open some important documents and don't have the money right now to upgrade the software those docs were in.  Now I can't access other things I could before.  Someone please help!

Hi
I actually have a similar problem. Upgraded to a clean Lion from Snow Leopard and then my thought was to use the migration assistant to move data from my Time Machine backup on my Time Capsule. I can see folders in Finder, but when I try to open files it says that I dont have the right permissions. It seems that I cant change permissions, I do not se my "user" in info, it shows "system" instead.
And if I open Time Machine in Lion and select my backup then I can see my older dates in the right hand list, but they are "greyed" out so I cant select them, I guess that this is due to permissions?
anyone who can help us?

  • How can I restore Parental Control Settings from Time Machine Backup?

I was trying to adjust one of the parental controlled accounts for my child.  I disabled parental controls, rebooted, and re-enabled it.  Now all the settings that I had setup before are gone.  How can I restore Parental Control Settings from Time Machine Backup?

    Hi ...
I've found a solution to my problem.
Time Machine locates extenal HDD backups differently depending if they were done via a network or via a USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt connection.
My initial backup was done via a direct Thunderbolt connection. I ran into the above issue b/c the second time when I tried looking for the backup file the HDD was conencted to my iMac and I was accessing it via a network conenction.
I simply connected the drive directly to my MacBook pro and ... voila. I was able to see the backup, select the iPhoto library and begin the restore.
    Hope this helps.

  • Problem in restore software and files from time machine to new hard disc

hello, recently im just change my macbook's hard disc, and i can't open any of my software and also the finder is keep no responding after i restore my files and software from time machine. Got any solution about it?

I see. Don't do that. I do not believe using Migration Assistant is a valid method of accomplishing what you intend.
Furthermore, unless you are using the "Enter Time Machine" feature, you really shouldn't pick and choose what you want to copy from a Time Machine backup... "no user serviceable parts inside". You can certainly find and individual files and folders in the Finder, but you will run into the permissions problems you describle. I would not attempt to circumvent those protections.
As I understand Time Machine, you must either restore a volume from a Time Machine backup, thereby erasing the volume first, or restore individual files and folders by using "Enter Time Machine" when the backup has already been properly designated for the source.
Since your replacement hard disk - the source, now - is technically new, the latter is not an option. It's as if you were trying to restore to a different computer. This can't be done.

  • How can I restore a deleted calendar from time machine

I accidentally deleted one of my calendars.  How can I restore it from time machine?

I'm not sure why it didn't work.  I deleted the old Calendar folder and then replaced it with a Time Machine version of the same folder from the previous day.  Then I opened iCal and there was still nothing there.
The reason I just deleted Calendar folder and it's sub-folders and tried to start from scratch is because I could tell which sub-folder was for any one specific calendar since the sub-folder names were in some sort of code.

  • Can I restore Yosemite Public beta from Time Machine with Mavericks bootable recovery drive

I had Yosemite beta running on an SSD in my Mac Book Pro. This drive has failed and is no longer recognized. I do have a Time Machine backup of this drive. When I restored it to a new SSD it would not boot.(formatted to MAC OS Extended (Journaled) with a single GUID partition)  I do not have a Yosemite recovery drive. My question is, can I boot to the SSD using the Mavericks recovery USB drive and do a full restore of my Yosemite drive from Time Machine? I am unable to re-download the Yosemite beta as my code has already been redeemed.

Yes, this did work. I booted to the Mavericks recovery drive and pulled the backup off of Time Capsule and resolved the issue.

  • Can I restore events with titles from time machine?

I need to restore 2 events back into iphoto. I am using time machine as my backup. When I restore the event it imports the photos from that event back into iphoto but puts them into an "untitled event".
Is there a way to restore events including the title of the event or do I have to go by memory on what all the events were titled?
It would seem that there would be a way to do this. My concern is if I ever have to restore a large number of events from time machine it would be nearly impossible to remember what each event is titled.
    Thank you in advance

    Thomas:
No, you can't do it that way. There is another way but is rather involved and time consuming and will require the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. Here's how:
1 - restore the entire library with the events you want and keep the current one.
2 - rename the restored library to iPhoto Library Restored.
3 - rename the original library back to just iPhoto Library.
4 - open your current library and then close.
5 - open iPLM and get both libraries loaded in the left hand pane.
6 - copy the event from the restored library to the operation library like this.
That will keep your keywords, titles and comments and Event title intact.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Can I restore OD user data from Time Machine

    Hi,
I accidentally deleted some users from Open Directory Master, can I restore these from Time Machine?
    Where are OD files stored?
    Thanks!!

The OD is a database, you can't simply restore records to it from TimeMachine, nor any other backup which makes a block copy of it. All these types of backups will restore the whole database or nothing. It's a good idea to always every now and then export a list of data (users, groups, etc) from the database and store that separately on another backup media. The exported data is usually xml and can be edited if you wanna grab/edit a particular user (or any other data contained in the xml file).

  • Can I restore a lost note from Time Machine?

I had a note "document" on my macbook air that dissappeared.  I have been regularly backing this mac
up with Time Machine and figured that I should be able to find an old copy, but I can't figure out
how to search Time Machine for notes.   Any suggestions?

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes
Right-click or control-click the line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Restore the selected item from the most recent backup that predates the unwanted changes.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • How can I restore just one application from Time Machine?

Can someone please walk me through step by step on how to restore just one application. Thank you. Jean

Before you restore an application from a Time Machine backup it would be wiser to remove the current installed copy then reinstall from the application's original distribution medium - download, CD/DVD, etc. The reason for this is that Time Machine backs up every hour. By now the bad version of this application is now backed up to your Time Machine backup drive. Restoring from the backup won't resolve your problem.
First, uninstall the old program. If the program came with an uninstaller then use it. If not then start by deleting the application from the Applications folder. Then locate all the support files associated with the application and remove them, too. Look for these in:
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Applications Support
Applications may come with a separate uninstaller program that could also be in your Applications folder. Some applications may install other files in other locations on your computer. If you tell us what the application is we may be able to provide additional help.
You may find more information here: The XLab FAQs. Read the FAQ on uninstalling software.

  • How can I restore an old backup from Time Machine to my iPhone 5?

I have the iPhone 5 that I had previously transferred my apps and other data to from my iPhone 4. Due to poor battery life, I had to restore the iPhone 5 as a new phone. This helped battery life but now I habve lost my text messages, App data and photos. I use Time Machine on my Mac so whayt do I need to do to get the data back on my phone. I'd like to do this without restoring the phone but rather syncing it with data recovered from Time Machine. I don't want to screw up the battery life again.

  • I'd like to do a fresh install on a macbook air running 10.9.4 and manually restore programs and files from time machine.  How would I go about doing this?

In the past I've always just run a full backup from time machine, but my computer is just getting way too full and its performance is a little sluggish.   If there's any way to to just reinstall all the programs without user files, and then manually restore user files on an as needed basis, that would be ideal.
Also, should I just reinstall mavericks using the command + R function?
Any help would be appreciated.   Thanks.

Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Can not restore address book card from Time Machine

I have a contact that disappeared from address book, I don't think I deleted it, but it is gone.
I open Address book, open time machine, an address book window appears in TM and I type in Default (the missing card) and scroll back in time to where it appears (before the magic deletion). I select the card and push restore, TM scrolls forward in time, the finder re-appears with an address book window from time machine showing the contact. This window fades and the 'real time' address book window appears, it now has default in the search field, but the card has not been restored.
Any ideas on what is going wrong or how to correct it?
    TIA.

    Hi,
instead, why don't you try replacing the folder- Home Folder/Library/Application Support/Address Book.

  • How can I restore an iPhoto library from Time Machine (ML) - when I TM doesn't see the backup??

    Hi,
I recently did a Time Machine backup of my MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion) onto an external HDD. Around the time of the last backup, my system was behaving funny so I decided to rebuild the OS X.
Because the last TM backup was of a system that as mentioned, was somewhat 'unstable', and I only had a few backups available (didn't have TM running too long beforehand) - I decided not to use TM to 'restore' my system. I just did  a clean install of ML and planned on pulling files over manually. I'd done this before and it worked a treat.
This time ran into a snag. The backup disk TM used was an external HDD which I wanted to upgrade (suffice to say it works fine). So, I needed to move the backup.backupdb directory to my other HDD. The copy seemed to work fine ... so far so good.
I installed the new ML OS on my MacBook Pro and that was fine too. I was able to pull most of my files over by going into the TM backup and copying what I needed.
BUT, for some reason, this didn't work for the iPhoto library?
Alas, I found that you need to do a 'restore' iPhoto library file from whithin TM. So I fired up TM and noticed that it didn't recognise the old backup file located on the HDD. I.e. when I turned on TM, pointed it to the external HDD (where I copied the previous backup to), it started a fresh backup.
So ... my question is - "How do I restore the iPhoto library if I can't get to it from TM?"
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help! The last 15 years of photos are stored in this library!
