Can't restore: ipod busy?

Hello,
when I turn on the ipod it says: Use iTunes to restore and so I plug my ipod to the iTunes and iTunes asks to restore, so I accept, put in my password and all, but as soon as it starts to restore I get the error message from iTunes that my ipod is 'busy' and can't proceed to restoring it. Then it goes on a loop. Once I quit iTunes, it tells me I have inserted a disk my computer cannot read... I have tried all the R's in the help menu, I have tried it on other computers, I have checked if it was on 'hold', I have tried pretty much everything I can think of or read. I just got it 2 weeks ago from a friend, it's a used ipod nano first generation, software 1.3.1. My computer says there are no updates for iTunes, but I can't get to the ipod updates as it keeps on asking me to restore...

Sorry if this has been asked before but I've been searching the boards and am yet to find a result.
I have an old iPod classic 60GB (video) which has a dodgy HDD. It was clicking and in a constant sad face/charging loop. I've managed to get it display "Please restore iPod" message and it is now being recognised by my macbook. I've tried to restore it via iTunes but when I try that I get an error message tht says "The iPod could not be restores because it is busy".
I've tried toformat the iPod using Disk Utility too but i get an error:

The oddest thing is that under disk utility my iPod drive is showing up as a 2TB drive:

Can't Restore Ipod...error message

I presume I need to restore my 5th gen Ipod as I can't sync it with itunes. However I also can't restore it.
I get a 1418 error message, also had a -50 error message too.
It has worked once since i got it, i synced it with a mates computer. But I can't get it to sync with my new comp at all.
This is very frustrating as i've not been albe to use it at all. Its just a pretty external hard drive at the mo!
I take it formatting it with windows would be a very bad idea?

Can't restore iPod in Windows XP

Hey everybody,
I just had my iPod replaced and now have a newly restored monochrome iPod c/w in front of me. It came with instructions stating that it had been formatted for Mac, and that I would need to use the updater to get it ready for my PC.
So, despite all the crap I have heard about iTunes 5.0 I downloaded it along with the latest updater. Both installs went fine.
According to the instructions included I was to install the updater, run it, plug in my iPod, then click RESTORE when the software detected the iPod and bolded the RESTORE button.
All this happens just as the instructions say but after I click RESTORE a message appears saying, "Can't lock iPod. Please check if any other applications are using iPod and try again."
Obviously I am not so stupid as to run iTunes when I do this and I don't know what else could be using my iPod...any one know how to get around this?
P.S. The iPod is currently mounted as a removable USB mass storage device in Windows. Could this be part of the problem (is MicroCrap Windows XP Pro using my iPod in the background)?

Not that it matters but after a couple of reboots/unplug-replug sessions I got passed that error and now it just says "Firmware update failure. Disk write error." which seems to be what everyone else is getting with the latest software from Apple...***?!?!?

If the iPod is recognized by the computer whilst in disk mode, you can try changing the drive letter by going to Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Disk Manager with the iPod attached and right clicking on your iPod and choosing Reassign. Make it a much higher letter, like I:
Note this can happen when your boot drive is not C:, or when you have a network drive that conflicts with the iPod assignment, or when you have other portable storage devices that are sometimes attached. It's always safe to move the iPod well away from the lower drive letters.
Do also try other ports, preferrably those on the rear.

Can't restore iPod and the music I had has disappeared

My iPod 20 Go wasn't functioning very well, it often played fragments of songs and often skipped songs. And now all the music I had on my iPod has disappeared, iTunes doesn't reconise the iPod and I can't restore it. The iPod seems to be working correctly but the music is not there. In explorer I can see my iPod which seems to be working correctly, I can even open the disc manually and I found that the music that was there hasn't been deleted even if the iPod's settings say that all the 20Go are still free.
What should I do?

You could try a format of the iPod in Windows. A full format does a check and remap of bad sectors on the iPod hard drive, and you would need to restore the iPod as normal (using the iPod updater) afterward. This can also work when the iPod is recognized by the computer, but not by the updater.
First, put the iPod into forced disk mode.
See: How to put the iPod into disk mode.
On your PC, go "my computer" and right click on the iPod, then choose "format". Ensure the settings are at "default" and that "quick format" is not checked. Now select "format". It will take a while, but when that's finished, restore the iPod using the updater.
If you need to, reset the iPod to exit disk mode.
You can also check the iPod's hard drive for errors using Windows ScanDisk.
Put the iPod into disk mode as previously mentioned. Go to "my computer" and right click on the iPod then select "properties", then "tools". Select the option to scan the disk for any errors.
To exit forced disk mode, reset the iPod.

I FOUND OUT HOW TO FIX IT:

2) Uninstall iTunes completely
- After uninstalling, make sure that the following directories are erased:

C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Application Data\Apple

3) One other thing that I did, which I don't know if it helped. Was cleared my registry from previous iTunes installations, by
a. clicking start....run
b. typing 'regedit'
c. searching for strings that had "iTunes" in them and removing the ones under the folder "SOFTWARE" and NOT ANY OTHERS.

4) Empty Recycling Bin to get rid of everything
5) Re-install the latest versions of iTunes available at www.apple.com
6) Click File-->Import and then selecting your exported Library File (XML)
this will re-import all your settings and album ratings and ID3 tags
7) THEN VAIOLA! This fixed my error -48

Can't Restore iPod 3G

After transferring some songs to the iPod I noticed that it was making a clicking sound as if the drive was spinning up and trying to engage but not able to (clicking) then spinning back up again and clicking and repeating indefinitely. I could not restore via iTunes. Got a message saying:
"iPod could not be restored. Unknow error (1429)."
Even the Disk Utility could not recognize the drive.
Any ideas?

From all the experience I received from this forum, I believe that the Apple's geniuses would not do anything other than to Restore the iPod back to the factory setting. If they can't get the iPod mounted with their computer, then they will describe it as a hard drive problem.
The iPod with folder with exclamation icon = the iPod OS get corrupted and not able to boot up the iPod
The Sad iPod icon = some problem with the hard drive, likely the head of the hard drive get stuck at the certain point or some bad sectors on the HD. It can be solved as the ordinary HD, the key is to get the iPod mounted and allow you to do the format (not Restore).

For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”

A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"

You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case.
