Can't Restore Mini

I've had my mini for about 2 years now and have never had a problem until the drive that had my music on it crashed and I lost all my music.
Now that it's fixed, I just downloaded iTunes 7.2. It took a while, but I was able to get to the Summary and activate the Restore. But I get a message that says: "The iPod 'IPOD' cannot be restored because it contains files that are in use by another application."
I've search the forums back to the beginning of the year, but didn't see this problem.
I've reset my mini several times. When I plug it back in, most times the following information appears:
Name: IPOD
Capacity: N/A
Software Version: N/A
Serial #: N/A
Format: Windows
and sometimes when I reset, I get the following:
Name: IPOD
Capacity: N/A
Software Version: 1.4.1
Serial #: It lists my serial number
Format: Windows
The name that should show up is my name - Betsy. It's always been like that.
Also, when I plug in, I get a removable drive (E:) under my computer, so I'm assuming it's in disk mode, but I can't get it out. When I right click on E: it just freezes up.
Can someone help me with this so I can get it working.

To be honest with you, I really don't know the tech. issue behind this 1418 error. But I did face this problem with a 4G iPod which was previously formatted on a PC.
It can only be solved by resetting the restore process, it could be some bugs either on the existing iPod software on the iPod, drives or iTunes on the computer.
The way that I solve it -
Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
d. You may also need to switch around the UBS port on your computer

  • Can't restore mini-with a twist

My daughter's mini suddenly and spontaneously switched formats from Mac to Windows. I have no idea how as we only have Apple products in the house. I've read through the various posts about how to restore the iPod but nothing works. When hooked up to her iMac it shows up in the device pane but when I hit the restore button it says no iPod was detected and please plug one in. I tried erasing the drive in Disc Utility but was unable to as it was "unable to unmount the disc". I should mention that this was a refurb unit provided to us by the Apple Store for a Mini that died and was just out of warranty. Any thoughts or help appreciated.
    Thanks, Jim

    Hi Jim,
It sounds like iTunes cannot sucessfully connect to your iPod, because it is an issue with your iPod itself.
You could try forcing your iPod into disk mode, following the instructions here:
    Putting iPod into disk mode
With the iPod in disk mode, try connecting it to your computer for a restore. If you still get that "iPod not detected" message in iTunes, then try the disk repair/format in Disk Utilities.

can i restore my contacts that i have lost since setting up icloud?
I can only see my husbands contact list and not mine. Can I restore mine?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
You can only restore them from a backup. This has occurred because you are sharing an iCloud account. ideally you should each have your own iCloud account, that way you can each manage your own mail, contacts, calendars, documents etc and avoid unintentional deletions and unwanted editing. If there is information you wish to share between you, this can be done with a secondary account.
Having separate iCloud accounts, doesn't mean you have to have separate iTunes accounts, so whilst you keep your personal data separate, you can continue to share music, apps, books, TV shows, movies etc.

  • My mac mini is running very slow all of a sudden, how can i restore it's speed?

my mac mini is running very slow all of a sudden, how can i restore it's speed?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running a program at the instance of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There is no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear in the Terminal window. If you don't see that line within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

my newphew mistype my password many type,
now need to restore but i can't restore,
it's has an error code 3002

This is what the error is all about
Errors 3000-3999 (3004, 3013, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the update server (gs.apple.com) on ports 80 or 443.
Update to the latest version of iTunes.
Verify the computer's date and time are accurate.
Check that your security or firewall software is not interfering with ports 80 or 443, or with the server gs.apple.com.
Follow Troubleshooting security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
An entry in your hosts file may be redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see "Unable to contact the iOS software update server gs.apple.com" above).
Internet proxy settings can cause this issue. If you are using a proxy, try without using one.
Test restoring while connected to a known-good network.

  • Can't restore my mini!

I accidentally unplugged my mini before ejecting it (thought it was my mouse cord...whoops!), and it erased all the songs and info. No big deal, since I can reset, restore, update...whatever. Only problem is, I have done all of that, and when I go to restore it, it won't let me install the updater on the iPod itself, only on my HD. It says that there is not enough free space??? But there is nothing on it! The iPod shows up on my desktop, but not in iTunes (I get the error message that it cannot read the contents, and "please use the iPod updater to restore your iPod to its factory settings").
Is there any way to reformat it, or anything? I'm pretty clueless about this stuff, but I can follow directions, so anything would be helpful!

"it won't let me install the updater on the iPod itself, only on my HD"
You install the Updater on the hard drive not on the iPod. You'll get instructions and a link to a video tutorial on restoring in this article: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings

My MBP has gone for repair. "Everything" was backed up via Time Machine on external HD.
Can I attach that ext. HD to a different computer (MacMini) and access/restore the data on MBP which has gone for repair?

you can use Migration assistant to import all of the user data and apps from the TM backup to the mini. you can also restore individual files/folders. control-clock on TM in the dock and choose "browse other TM disks". this will let you restore individual items. what you shouldn't do as baltwo mentioned is do a full system restore from TM which would wipe your mini and restore the copy of the backed up MBP system onto it. that's bound to give you trouble.

    This is typical Mavericks.
Was the old backup taken from Mavericks install?
Did you already start TM from the new install and thus totally foul up and corrupt your old backup?
You will need to try migrate assistant.. and if that fails you will need to manually pull your files from the old backup if you can still access them.

In order to reliably save the info and be able to restore at a later date, you would need to use his AppleID.
Switch to it on iTunes, back the iPad up and confirm the backup exists (Preferences / Devices), then switch to yours, wipe the iPad and start afresh. Will also wipe his apps, as they are tied to the AppleID as well.

TSNA - My system crashed 1/2 way through opening up Parallels.  I use Parallels for Quicken & Quickbooks only.  My system locked up & I had to power down to get any response on the screen.  When it started back up I got a screen that said Restore from Time Machine, Safe Startup (or some such words) and one other choice.  NONE of which would do anything. - No response to any clicking, entering, up down etc.  I called over my Apple friend and he could not get it going,.  Ended up having to Reload O/S from the startup disks and reformat my hard drive.  Reformatted because I wanted to get rid of Parallels which has painfully slowed down my entire system.  I never keep it open unless I am working with Quickbooks or Quicken.  Therefore I had decided to start using Boot Camp anyway.  So I would have had to reformat my hard drive to do that regardless of this freeze up of my system.
This whole thing has taken days to get my documents off Time Capsule.  Time Machine would then not restore to my "new" or reformatted hard drive, so all the files on the Time Capsule were hidden.  Total nightmare !
