My daughter's ipod touch wasn't operating correctly - apps wouldn't update, locked up, etc. I attempted to back up and restore, but it won't let me restore, instead citing "unknown error 18", but it's now locked in a half-restored state and I can't do anything with it.

Welcome to the Support Communities! I'm not sure from your post what steps you have tried, but it sounds like you may need to use recovery mode to address the issue with your unresponsive iPod touch.

Ran updates on my MacBook Pro. Right now you can't without a computer. Once you get to a computer you can restore it using DFU mode.

You should probably disable the autosync functionality first by going to Edit -> Preferences, clicking the Devices tab, and enabilng the prevent iPods,iPhones, and iPads from automatically syncing option.
Next, authorize the new computer with your iTunes Account. In iTunes, choose Store -> Authorize This Computer and enter in the correct credentials.
If possible, either copy a backup file from your old computer to your new one or create a new backup of your iPod in iTunes before letting it sync. To do this, right->click on your iPod Touch from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and choose Backup. You might also want to take a look at this article to see what it all included in the backup.

The "device may need service" means a hardware problem. In that case make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

Can't Restore..."Unknown Error"

Been unable to use my ipod touch 16gb for the past 3 days. It will not restore in iTunes and gives an unknown error 6 after expanding the restore software.
Took it to the local apple store (twice now) they were able to restore it, but upon trying to load my music she crashed and needed restore again. Apple store suggested the restore file might be corrupted.
This is on a Windows XP box. How do I make iTunes re-download the restore software fresh?
I'm very close to returning this unit for exchange/refund (got a few days left on my return policy from theon-line vendor (JR.com)).
Any help appreciated.

After no progress getting a more stable ipod touch, I finally convinced my local apple store to exchange it for a new unit (took 3 visits to the uber geek!). The new unit work flawlessly and I imediately noticed the touch screen was way more responsive than the original week 38 unit I had. Been using the new one for ~2 weeks now...no issues at all. No unresponsive letters on the keyboard, no whacky controls being pressed at random.
However, tonight I just tried to install the latest firmware upgrade 1.1.2 and now it is failing the restore step with an unknown error (6)!! Done several attempts and still no progress...deleted the downloaded update file from my WinXP hard drive (C:\Documents and Settings\MyUsername\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates) and am now awaiting the fresh dowload once more.
When this situation happened on my old unit, the only way I succeeded was to login using a new user account, launch iTune and perform the update. Somehow that worked. Might need to repeat it tonight if the next download won't take.

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.
