Can't restore OS9 to TiBook from original discs

Newcomer here. I'm stymied. I got a new MacBook so now I want to reinstall the original software to my old TiBook (Gigabit Ethernet 667) so I can get back in Classic mode. I have all the original discs.
It accepts the OSX disc but not the two restore discs, nor the 9.2.1 bootable.
If I try to install from them I get the "no system 9 folder" message and/or "error code 1012". If I try to boot from them it gets about 1/5 along the progress bar then hangs. I've also tried from external drives.
I reformatted and clean installed the OS10.1 (Mac OS Extended) with OS9 drivers checked. I've run hardware checks...everything's fine.
I've scoured this forum and found similar problems but no solution.
I had it running on Tiger...never should have upgraded!
Is it at all possible that the discs are incompatible or corrupt?
Any ideas?
Been at this for days!

Hi, nightshade48 -
Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
If I try to install from them I get the "no system 9 folder" message and/or "error code 1012".
The installer for OS 9 (OS 9.2.1) for that machine will run only when the machine is booted to OS 9; it can not run directly in OSX, nor usably in Classic.
According to Apple KBase Article #HT1835 - Mac OS 8, 9: Compatibility With Macs, the PowerBook G4 (GE) model can not use a retail (white label, gold 9) OS 9.2.1 Install CD (the version of OS 9.2.1 that came with it is model-specific).
Since there is no retail OS 9.2.2 Install CD, the only option left for an installation of OS 9 is to use the original Software Install disk for OS 9.2.1 that came with the machine. This disk would probably have a blue or blue-gray label, and state the model (PowerBook G4) on the label.
Sometimes it helps to reset the PRAM before attempting to boot to an original disk.
If all you need to use OS 9 for is as Classic, and not as a bootable OS, then there is another way to get it on there - copy a working OS 9.1 or later (OS 9.2.x is best) System Folder from another machine. This copied System Folder should work fine as Classic, but you would not be able to boot the machine to it.
When doing this it is best to use as a source machine a model which is OS 9 bootable, so that you get as complete a copy as you can (machines which are not OS 9 bootable but which can use Classic have an abridged, special-purpose install of OS 9).

    See Erasing disks securely
Start up from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and select the disk and click erase - to securely erase data click Security Options and Erase Free Space which will entirely wipe your disk, overwriting it with zeros so that no data is recoverable.

  • Can't restore my blackberry z10 from the backup file

    Hi,
I did total backup of my BB z10 with BB link. After the backup was completed, I wipe my BB z10 totally. Then I connected it to the link once again (After the wiping process completed) And suddenly I  can't restore my BB z10 from the previous .bbb file. It only restarted back and turned off. I tried to extract with numeruous program, but they don't support .bbb from BB z10.  Does anyone know the solution??
I really need to extract the phone contact files.

The Backup is encrypted so you will have no luck extracting anything with other programs. If your device itself was encrypted prior to the wipe, would it help if you re-encrypted it using the original password?

  • Restoring OS9.1 Applications from USB  mobile drive

QUESTION: How can I restore OS9.1 applications for use in OS X Classic mode that were backed up to a USB mobile drive.
I installed OS X10.2.8 on a PowerPC G3 running OS9.1. I had to erase the disc to partition the hard drive for the OS X installation. Prior to erasing hard drive, I copied all the OS9.1 system and application files to a USB mobile drive.
The OS X installation appears to be successful. However, after I copied the OS9.1 system and applications back to the hard drive partition, I could neither boot up in OS9.1 nor use the applications.
To resolve the OS9.1 bootup issue, I re-installed OS9.1 and can boot up in classic , or independently of OS X. However, I cannot start my old applications. Is there some way to have system recognize my old OS9.1 system and applications so that I can just boot up directly from those files. Any method that would allow copy of files to partitioned disc without re-installing everything is appreciated.

Not all OS 9 applications can be transported by simply copying the application. If there are support files installed elsewhere (in the System Folder, for example) then you will need to install all the support files required for the application to work.
You may find it's easier to simply reinstall the applications from the application discs.
Note that I'm assuming the applications are compatible with Classic. Not all old Mac OS applications will work in Classic.

  • How can I restore my sons itouch to original settings without doing the restore through iTunes? He can't remember his passcode and when I try to restore through iTunes it never completes the update/restore without timing out?!?!

HOw can I restore my sons itouch to original settings without going through iTunes restore? When I plug into iTunes it will never complete the update/restore without timing out? He can't remember his password. I can't get my iTunes to update to the newest level either without timing out. Please help!

The thread title differs from the original post, sorry for the confusion.  I read password instead of passcode.
The only way past a passcode lock is by entering the passcode.  Refer to HT1212 iOS: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen:
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup).
If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present.
As for timing out during the restore...
If there isn't any antivirus or firewalls in the way, I would try restoring from a different user account or even a different computer.  If still unable to restore without timing out, I would try a different network.

  • How can I restore a single image from an aperture time machine backup, do I have to restore the entire library? that does not make sense

I hope there has been found a more efficiant solution for this,  how can I restore a single image from an aperture time machine backup, I really hope I don't have to restore the entire library? that does not make sense
    any suggestions?

Did you try browsing your backups in the Finder ?  That is, do not go and "Enter Time Machine".  Instead, navigate to your Time Machine backup via Finder and then manually go to the time period (by folder name) you are looking for ... when you find your Aperture library you can then "Show Package Contents" and find the Master you are looking for.

Restoring from an older iOS to a newer iOS version is fine.  It's going the other way that would be a problem.
You do need a late version of iTunes on your computer to be able to work with the new iPhone.  The current iTunes version is 11.1.3.  If your iTunes is old, download the latest from

To restore non-purchased music on the iTunes Store to iTunes from the iPod, you need a third-party application as Senuti > http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/ You can use others, but this has worked perfectly for me

    Hi,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when trying to open CS2.

  • Do I need startup discs to upgrade hardware on MacBook Pro or can I restore the hard drive from from a Time Machine backup?

do I need startup discs to upgrade hardware on MacBook Pro or can I restore the hard drive from from a Time Machine backup?

Ok, well go and grab a small 2.5" hard drive enclosure so you can put the new drive in & temporarily use it like an external hard drive.
Download Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper and make a bootable clone of your current HDD on the new HDD.
Once that's done you can test the clone by booting from it. To do this hold Optioni while booting to select the external (new) drive. If everything looks ok, you can go ahead and swap over the HDD's.
    So much easier.

  • How can I restore Parental Control Settings from Time Machine Backup?

I was trying to adjust one of the parental controlled accounts for my child.  I disabled parental controls, rebooted, and re-enabled it.  Now all the settings that I had setup before are gone.  How can I restore Parental Control Settings from Time Machine Backup?

    Hi ...
I've found a solution to my problem.
Time Machine locates extenal HDD backups differently depending if they were done via a network or via a USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt connection.
My initial backup was done via a direct Thunderbolt connection. I ran into the above issue b/c the second time when I tried looking for the backup file the HDD was conencted to my iMac and I was accessing it via a network conenction.
I simply connected the drive directly to my MacBook pro and ... voila. I was able to see the backup, select the iPhoto library and begin the restore.
    Hope this helps.
BTW - I found this out by reading the 'blue box' selection on this page: http://pondini.org/TM/E2.html
    (Thanks goes to Pondini!)
