Can't restore TextEdit. OS X won't allow it.

I had to restore my whole iMac (OS 10.9.3, intel) from Time Machine backup and now TextEdit.app is corrupted and cannot be restored. (Don't know what broke system. Virus scan says it is clean.)
I tried to individually restore TextEdit from Time Machine but a dialog box says "'TextEdit.app' can't be modified or deleted because it's required by OS X."
Interestingly, TextEdit worked fine just the day before but, according to Time Machine, it has been broken since January. I tried to restore it from the January backup, but the same dialog box pops up telling me it can't be done.

You really don't need to run virus software on your Mac.
Are you sure you actually entered Time Machine to do the Restore?
If this fails, boot into the Recovery drive. Hold down Command R when restarting. Select Reinstall OSX.

You want to restore the app data, not the app itself. You still have the app, or at least that's the way that I interpret your post. Do you backup with iCloud or iTunes? If you do, you can try restoring the backup in order to recover the recipes, assuming that the recipes are in the backup.

Those menu bar commands are disabled when you do not have a device (your shuffle) selected in iTunes.
If the iTunes sidebar (along left side of iTunes) is hidden, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar. In the sidebar, your shuffle should be listed under DEVICES. Click on it there to select it. Now, those commands under the File menu should be accessible.
However, once you have the shuffle selected, many of those "device-related" commands in the menu bar are also on the iTunes window. For example, there is a Sync button at the low-right corner of the window, which does the same thing as the command in the menu bar.

I would never recommend tinyumbrella. I've had to respond to hundreds of posts from people who used it and found the it trashed the network database on their computer.
If you can't recover using approved methods rather than hacking your phone (which is what tinyumbrella does) then you've probably got a hardware problem.
So what should you do? First, connect it to a charger for 15 minutes. If it doesn't recognize the charger try a different one and a different cable. Then hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time until an Apple logo appears. Hold up to 1 minute. If nothing happens your phone really is broken, either a broken connector or a bad battery.

Of course, if you have already tried tinyumbrella this won't work until you repair the damage to your network database on your computer. But we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Can anyone tell me WHY Oracle won't allow sub-queries in outer joins?

I've recently been tasked with converting a series of InterBase dbs to Oracle.
Many of the queries in the InterBase dbs use sub-queries in outer joins. Oracle won't countenance this (01799 - a column may not be outer-joined to a subquery).
I can get around it using functions but WHY won't Oracle allow this?
SQL Server allows it, InterBase allows it (I don't know about ANSI SQL) but it seems to be a common enough technique...
I'm just curious (and also a little frustrated!).

Just bought Quicktime Pro, can't load into V10, but won't allow me to install V7 with V10 Present.

OK I video'd my bands latest gig on the weekends using I-Movie, but when played back on I-movie, the video / Audio are over 10 seconds out of sync. Common Problem apparently, however on Quicktime it runs smoothly, so I was told I need to edit it in Quicktime Pro. Easier said that done. Quicktime Pro is only available for V7, I have V10 installed, and it will not allow me to install V7 when V10 is installed. Already paid for the rego, so not Freaking impressed with Apple having such a F..d up system in place where they do not keep the Pro version up to date with the free version. What do I do?

Can you convert a pdf that won't allow text to be highlighted so you can do highlighting?

I have Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard. My monthly bank statement comes as a pdf. I would like to be able to highlight parts of it such as check and deposit amounts but, although the highlighting toolbar is available, when I select a tool such as the cross-out text tool and try to highlight an item, nothing happens. Is there a way to convert this apparently uneditable type of pdf to one that will allow highlighting?

You need an app that will perform that function. There are many apps that will do this, the most powerful being Adobe's Acrobat Pro, it's not inexpensive however that is what it is designed to do. If you want to just do some light annotations Preview (which you already have) will do this, however if you want to edit every aspect Acrobat Pro is tough to beat.
I would recommend using the Mac App store to begin shopping, you will probably find some middle ground app that will do what you need.

I really appreciate any help and advice I can get.
First my iphone won't allow me to drag music over to it. I'm old school and I like to drag specific tracks over to my iphone. iTunes won't let me do that. I have tried creating a new playlist and syncing again but still I can't do that. Any help or ideas?
Also, I keep getting the message that "x number of items could not be synced. See iTunes for more information". What does this mean???? I read some where that clearing the photo cache can help. One problem, I CAN'T FIND THIS PHOTO CACHE!!!!! Where is this thing. I read that you need to click "go" on the iTunes menu. My menu doesn't say go. What's going on? How to i find the iphone photo cache and get rid of that annoying message?!?

I Have seen people report this issue when they try to sync their devices but in never seen it when trying to restore an unresponsive iPad. I would sguggest trying recovery mode now.

Try rebooting it (hold home and power together for 15-20 seconds). If the display doesn't come back to life, you're out of luck. You're supposed to back it up before it fails. It's too late to do so after the fact.
