Can't restore to factory settings due to encrypted Mac HD

II've really messed up. A few weeks ago I encrypted my Mac HD and received a long 24 figure passcode, which I still have. Yesterday, I was having issues with my Mac (Mountain Lion) and I went to restore to factory settings. I have no T-MOBILE back up and put all my files on and external HD.
the the issue I have is that in Disk Utility my Mac HDR is now untitled and I can't do anything with it. I can't turn off the encryption either because the long password and my usual password won't work. When I try to erase the now untitled HDR it says "are you sure you want to erase the partition "untitled" and create an encrypted partition? i do this but nothing really happens except for the HD now becomes "Encrypted Partition".
iif I try to reinstall the Mac OS X I eventually just get to a grey "stop sign" screen. I've really messed up here and I think its due to me having encrypted the drive. I've resorred to factory settings once before when I thought I was selling my Mac and there were no issues. Please help as I have to get on with my MA.

Hey,
Im a little bit confused about your posting. You wrote that you tried Ubuntu but have you installed Ubuntu and deleted Vista or was it just a Ubuntu live disk?
The Toshiba HDD recovery function is described here:
http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD9102IR0000R01.htm
But one point more: The HDD recovery works only with preinstalled Windows version from Toshiba so if you have installed another OS or did an upgrade, this option doesnt work anymore.
And youre right: The notebook doesnt come with Toshiba recovery disk because you have to create this disk yourself using Toshiba recovery media creator that is preinstalled. This tool will create a bootable disk with an image of factory settings that can be restored every time in contrast to HDD recovery that only works with original installed OS.
To cut a long story short, just order a recovery disk from Toshiba and install it. Then you have factory settings back :)

  • Can I restore to factory settings in my iMac without compromising iTunes or iPhoto?

I recently purchased a new iMac, but it seems to be running slower than it should. I fear this is from the transfer it completed from my old macbook. Can I restore factory settings and erase all the unnecessary stuff without erasing the items in my iTunes library or iPhoto library? Please advise. Gracias.

Putting it back to factory settings means erasing the hard drive. Your iMac did not come from the factory with your music or photos on it, right?
Move those libraries (the iTunes library is in your Music folder, the iPhoto library is in the Pictures folder, unless you moved either one previously) to an external hard drive. Then erase the internal hard drive and reinstll the system. Reconnect the external hard drive. Launch iPhoto while holding down the option key on your keyboard. When it asks where to find the library, point it to the library on the external hard drive. Do the same thing with iTunes.
    Best of luck.

  • Macbook Pro from 2011. Can I restore to factory settings without disk?

Hello I think I downloaded a virus on my mac. I dont have time machine so the only option I think I have is to restore my macbook but I dont think my macbook was baught with Lion. What are my options? P.s. My Model Identifier:
    MacBookPro8,1

Hello I think I downloaded a virus on my mac.
Before you waste time restoring your computer to factory settings, what makes you believe you have a virus? Although Macs are not invulnerable, malware on the Mac is quite rare and most of it can't make it past the built-in defenses in Mac OS X. So, it's very unlikely that you have malware. Post a clear, concise description of the problems you're having.
Also, if you don't have backups, that needs to be your absolute top priority. Without backups, it's just a matter of time before all your data is irrevocably destroyed.

  • How can I restore to factory settings and wipe harddrive?

I am selling my macbookpro 2.16GHz 120GB Duo Core online and I want to be sure that any information cannot be reclaimed from the hard drive. So far I have transfered my files to an external HD and erased all files on the laptop through the trash can application, including emptying the trash. I then inserted the original install disk which I believe returned the computer to factory settings because once it is turned on it begins with the welcome/ set up screens. But I really just want to be sure that I have erased everything and that nothing can be rebuilt from the hard drive. Should I have done something else to "deep clean" it?

Boot from your OS installer disk. The one that came with the MBP. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select the hard drive and then select Erase. You have several choices for the erase procedure so select the one you prefer. The more passes you select the longer the procedure will take. Then install the OS. After the last reboot when Mac Setup Assistant begins to run quit it and direct the Mac to shut down. The next time it's booted (by your new buyer) it will run again and they will have the opportunity to set it up from brand new.

  • I forgot my passcode, the power button is stuck (phone is on), so how can I restore to factory settings?

My 4s is locked out because we forgot the passcode.  I can't restore it from iTunes backup since I can't turn it off because the power button doesn't work.  If I treat it as a stolen phone and erase via Find My iPhone, will I need that power button to work in order to get it up and going again after restoring?

The phone is pretty much disabled if either button doesn't work.

  • Can you restore to factory settings?

I purchased a Mac Mini a few months just to see what Apple was all about. Well, as soon as I find out what Apple is going to do with the PowerBook I am going to order one. My question is this, when I sell the Mini can I reset it just as I got it? If so will it take all of my personal info off and still keep the programs that were loaded?
    Thanks for any help!

Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

My question is this, when I sell the Mini can I reset it just as I got it?
If so will it take all of my personal info off and still keep the programs
    that were loaded?
    Yes.
To restore the Mini to factory state, you need to reformat the hard drive using Disk Utility with the original install package that shipped with the Mini which is included on install disc #1.
If you want to erase the files so that they cannot be recovered, you can select security options to write zeros over the disk space. To make it more difficult to recover the files on the disk, you can specify doing this once, seven times, or 35 times.
In Disk Utility, select the disk you want to erase and click Erase.
Specify a volume format (For OS X it should be HFS+ or extended with Journaling enabled.)
Click Security Options and select the option you want to use. Click OK.
    Click Erase.
Then re-install the OS and all software included with the install package that shipped with the Mini. When the computer reboots after the install has finished, don't proceed with the setup assistant and shut down the computer.

  • My phone had to be replaced.  I backed up to the cloud and when I got home I thought it would upload to my phone, but it didn't.  I restored to previous backup on computer and now that's wrong.  Can I restore to factory settings/restore to my cloud?

Is back up and sync the same thing?

Is back up and sync the same thing?
No. Syncing transfers iTunes content to your devices. Backing up stores all data (minus iTunes content) that you have on your phone, and can be loaded onto a different device or reloaded onto an existing device.
Go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Let the device power down and back up. Go through the setup screen and DO NOT select restore from iTunes backup. Instead, choose iCloud backup, sign in with your Apple ID and select the correct backup.

  • Can I restore to factory settings from within windows?

    I have an NB205-330 with Windows 7.
I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix and Grub became my bootloader. Having 2 OS's wasn't as fun as I thought it would be so I'd like to return to just having windows. If I delete the Ubuntu partition Grub still tries to load at startup but nothing happens. So I reinstalled Ubuntu and I can choose which OS to load again. Holding 0 at startup doesn't work, my recovery partitions still show up as healthy, though the recovery media creator says "cannot open target partition" when I start it up. I don't have a big enough USB drive to try and create a system recovery disk so I decided to see if I could create an application recovery disk and that seemed worked fine, so maybe I would be able to create a system recovery disk?
Do I have any options except: 1) buying a bigger USB and see if I can create a recovery disk 2) ordering a recovery dvd

    mini notebook NB205-N330BL
    mini notebook NB205-N330BN
    Maybe one of those minis.
Your problem is that the master boot record (the very first sector on the hard disk) now contains the GRUB loader. The BIOS branches directly to that. You need to replace it with Microsoft's MBR. Follow these instructions.
Turn the computer on and immediately press and hold the F8 key.
On the Advanced Boot Options menu, choose Repair Your Computer.
When you reach the System Recovery Options menu, choose Command Prompt.
Enter this to replace the MBR.

  • Appletv recognizes my wireless network but won't connect to the internet. can't restore to factory settings

appletv won't connect to the internet, but recognizes my wireless network. ip address starts with 169.. somethings not right. never had a problem with appletv and home sharing until the update that required a change in my apple id

An IP address starting with 169 indicates you are not properly connected to your network. Try restarting your router and try to connect again. if the problem persists you may be suffering from interference.

  • TS1717 restoring default factory settings without itunes as both may have malware

How can I restoring default factory settings without itunes on my ipod 1 and ipod 3rd generation, as both may have malware aswell as 3 laptops, 2 mobile, TV snd BluRay Browser.
any advice will be greatly appreciated.
have tried to disinfect with Kaspersky products but the malware just overwrites everything that is put into the p.c. so I need to use just the pad itself, that is, of course, if it allows me access.
theres nothing like a ipad scorned, ask my weary eyes. cheers

yep, unfortunately can't reset without the passcode either.
With regards to doing a restore, do you mean:
    open itunes on my computer
click on my device on the left
    go to the device summary
    click restore
it then asks if i want to back up before i restore (to which i say no)
then it asks me if i'm sure I want to restore to factory settings and that all of me media and data will be erased and replaced with the newest version ( to which I say yes)
then it takes about 90 mins to do this but when I look at my phone, everything is exactly the same.
Am I missing something? Obviously I'm technologically challenged, but I HAVE to get to the bottom of this!

  • AirPort Extreme extends my network and has worked well for three months. Now it can no longer extend the network and flashes Amber. I have restored to factory settings moved it closer to time capsule and rebooted the system without luck

i have a blinking Amber on my extreme now and it cannot extend the network.  It was working fine and nothing has changed. I have restored to factory settings moved it to another room and rebooted the system without luck. Any suggestions

    What OS are you running?
Please give me a screenshot of the current AE setup..
I strongly recommend if you have issues.. take control of all the variables. Apple routers have too much auto..
Here is a list that I use for setups when using Yosemite.. but it relates to any OS.
You will need to factory reset again to get going.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite or whatever you are using.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
    eg AEgen5 for basestation.
Use AE24ghz and AE5ghz for wireless on each band, with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for router but if the AE is bridged you can have trouble.. Try using the static IP method or control it via the main router dhcp reservations.
    4. Check your share name on the computer/s is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Set up the extend to the Express using 2.4ghz and then see how good or bad the connection is.. this is better in the old v5 utility but if you hover your mouse over where it shows connection an extra chunk of info comes up.
I have specifically used 5ghz to make the extend.. because by testing it works better.. but do not be fooled.. this good connection is poor.. the RSSI.. which is difference signal .. at -79dbm is down the bottom of the stable.. and it drops out on a daily basis.. you want to see that signal around -60dbm at min.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.

  • I need to erase the contents of my phone and restore to factory settings. Does anybody know how to save your texts so you don't lose them?  Can I back those up to iCloud?  My phone was very likely hacked (Apple's advice was to call the police!)

"I need to erase the contents of my phone and restore to factory settings. Does anybody know how to save your texts so you don't lose them?  Can I back those up to iCloud?  My phone was very likely hacked (Apple's advice was to call the police!)"
That was all I could put in the initial "box."  Then it brought me to this page with instructions on how to write a good sentence.
    Proceeding ...
After going back and forth between Apple, AT&T and the police (all telling me to go to the other two) I took AT&Ts suggestion and got a new number. One tech warned against doing a backup, especially on my Mac, saying if my phone had been hacked then whatever bug was there would then invade my computer. But nobody knows how to determine if the phone has been hacked or a virus was planted there. Unfortunately I know who would have reason to do such a thing and all I can say is that he is at the top technologically and could easily do it. Almost impossible to prove, however.
So I need to preserve my text messages and my emails as well. I backed up my photos to that Microsoft product (One-Drive) and it froze (Surprise, Surprise) with four short videos to go, and no way of stopping that (when I tried it crashed repeatedly) so I'm in crisis mode here.
    Help ...
    Running 8.0 on 5S
    Thanks!

Betty I don't know if you fixed your hacking problem but I feel your pain. I've seen some strange things going on between my iMac and my iPhone and Apple has told me the same thing, call the police which I have done. The hackers have stole 500.00 out of my checking account have access to every internet account I use and no matter how often I change the password their right back on the account. I closed my FB account 3 times only to have someone reopen it. Right now I've got a link in my reading list (Safari) that if I click on it, it allows me to log onto my FB account anonymously.
I've seen a green folder come out of no where while I was trying to delete my passwords out of keychain when that green folder was put into the key chain I was immediately locked out. I than went into system preferences to try to make changes to my security settings, when I clicked on the icon it wouldn't open. I've seen log files of automator receiving commands and sending out my personal information thats on my computer.
I have a legitamate program called iExplorer that allows you to look at the contents of your iPhone back ups and saw a transaction someone made at the Apple store for some full length movies, some albums, ibooks and other apps but when I called the iTunes store and they said none of those items were showing up on my account. If their not on my account how can they be on my iPhone 6? One day someone was using my gmail account and unknowingly used google maps to search for an Italian restaurant, than a Mexican restaurant than a coffee shop and their search showed up on my iPhone but I didn't have my gmail account installed on my iPhone 6. Using my computer I logged onto my gmail account and looked at the maps history and sure enough there were the searches when I'd hover my curser over the link it gave me the longitude and latitude of the where the hacker was when he was using google maps. I know whoever reads this thinks Im crazy but I've documented everything and can prove the things that I have mentioned in this post actually happened.
One day I had my laptop (pc) and my iMac next to each other as I was using both. when I clicked on airport it showed that my laptop and my iMac had made a connection and were actually communicating with each other. I know I didn't do it I don't know how. The iMac was logged into my iCloud account while my laptop wasn't. I have formatted my iPhone at least a dozen times, Apple and an Apple retailer have formatted my hard drive not to mention the numerous times I have formatted it but the hackers keep getting on my devices. Im formatting my lap top at this very second because during the course of the night I left the ethernet cable plugged into it and they locked me out of my c: drive, and configured the system so I can't download any updates from Microsoft, overtime I type in www.microsoft.com it changes to ww38.microsoft.com which takes me to a blank page. I right clicked on the page I was redirected to and read the java script and couldn't believe that someone had actually configured Internet Explorer to redirect me to a blank page when I tried to go to Microsoft. Apples answer to all this is there was nothing wrong with my iPhone or my iMac and if I thought there was a problem to call the police which I have done.
Theres no doubt the hackers are reading this while I type it or will read it and I simply don't care anymore. I no longer email anyone, don't use my iCloud account and have taken precautions to protect my credit but if I ever find out who has invaded my privacy to this extreme the police are going to want to talk to me because Im going to hurt them like they've never been hurt before

  • I've added to ios6 to my new ipod touch with no problems. I'm trying to now restore the factory settings but the screen is frozen with an itunes sign and lead pointing towards it. The ipod won't even switch off. Can anyone help as it's driving me crazy

I've added ios6 to my new ipod but tried then to restore the factory settings. It won't extract any settings and the itunes then tells me that the server cannot be reached or is unavailable. I've been trying all day. Now the ipod has a itunes sign and a computer lead pointing towards it on the screen and this is frozen. It won't switch off or do anything else. Any ideas as this is now driving me crazy.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
