Can't restore Windows 7 file backup in Windows 8.1

Hi There,
This seems to be quite a stupid issue to have but here we go...  before installing Windows 8.1 onto my laptop I took a backup of my user files using the Windows 7 backup tool which created me an array of zip files, with a catlog file and a MediaID.bin...
all normal.
I then performed a fresh install of Windows 8.1, deleting the existing Windows 7 partitions.
Having completed the install I'm finding it impossible to restore my Windows 7 backup...  I can't even find a function which allows me to browse to a backup location to try and restore!?
The Windows 7 File Recovery tool isn't there any more, and for all intents and purposes "Recovery" doesn't seem to do anything useful... I don't want to restore a system image, just some files.
Can anyone help with my probable stupidity??  I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.

Well I'm extracting the new backup set and guess what WinRAR 5.01 took care of the long filename problem, with a full video shortly. The long filenames was windowsold. The metro apps have very long names.
To all admins/MS employees after watching the next video, I'm asking for shadow
Darkken to stop repeatedly telling us this does not work when in fact this does.
You really can't read.
Long filenames aren't the issue here. They never were, and I pointed that out several times.
Large files that get split across the set are the problem. As in some files are being split into multiple smaller files pieces that simply extracting and overwriting each other doesn't work.
Seriously, I give up. You simply do not hear people, you're too concerned with phantom issues that no one but you has brought up, and you don't take the time to actually pay any attention to what people are saying.
The article YOU posted even mentions these files, and advises people to ruin them and make them useless.
My problem was long filenames, anyways I have fully extracted and completed the backup set using winzip. For larger files I use this method.

Re: How to use Windows 7 file recovery in windows 8.1?
Windows 8.1 no longer has Windows Backup, because it has been replaced by the File History feature. In Windows 8, you could still access the Windows 7 backup/restore utilities, but these have been removed in Windows 8.1.
When you create a backup using Windows Backup, you should use the Restore Files wizard to restore the files. If you can't use the Restore Files wizard (for example, when you're using a computer that’s not running Windows Vista or Windows 7), you can manually
extract files from a backup by following these steps:
1.       Open the location where your backup is saved.
The files in your backup are saved as zip files.
Right-click the backup file (a file with the Windows Backup icon and the name of your computer), and then click Open.
To manually extract files that are larger than 200 MBs
If a file is larger than 200 MBs, it will be split into multiple zip files. You will need to extract and then combine these files following these steps:
1.       Open the location where your backup is saved.
Find the zip files that contain the file you want to extract. For example, if you're trying to extract a video file named BirthdayParty, you would find the zip files that contain files with that name.
Create a folder on your desktop to extract the files to.
Since the files all have the same name, you'll need to rename them as you extract them.
Extract the first file into the folder you created on your desktop and then rename the file.
Repeat this step until you have extracted all of the files, making sure that you name them similarly. For example, if you have four files for the BirthdayParty video, name them BirthdayParty1, BirthdayParty2, BirthdayParty3, and BirthdayParty4.
Open the Command Prompt window by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type Command Prompt, and then, in the list of results, click Command Prompt.
Type the following command: copy /b filename*.file_extension new_filename.file_extension
For example, copy /b BirthdayParty*.avi BirthdayPartyAll.avi
WINZIP OR WINRAR WILL WORK FOR YOU, IF NEEDED TO BE. VHD FILE WILL WORK FOR YOU IF YOU CREATED THE IMAGE. I HAVE NO PROBLEM RESTOREING 10 GIG ISO SPLIT INTO 5 FILES. I HAVE EVERY IMPORTANT FILE I
HAD IN WINDOWS 7 NOW TO USE WITH WIN8.1
Stop telling people this does not work. IT does. I do suggest anyone getting ready to install windows 8.1 to make a VHD file. You'll have less work to do. This method is for emergencys only. As  the person
asking the question asked. I supplied the answer for him/her to get the files back

  • I backed up my bookmarks to an external drive, rebuilt my system, and now when I try to restore from that file, I get "unsupported file type" How can I restore from this file?

I backed up my bookmarks to an external drive, rebuilt my system, and now when I try to restore from that file, I get "unsupported file type" How can I restore from this file?

Make sure that the backup file with the bookmarks has the correct file extension: .html for a HTML backup and .json for a JSON backup.<br />
You can check that via the right-click context menu of that file and open the Properties.<br />
If you are not sure about the file type then you can open the file in Firefox via "File > Open File"<br />
A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup as a web page with clickable links.<br />
    A JSON backup starts with: {"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":<br />
An HTML backup starts with: <nowiki><!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1></nowiki>
You may need to add quotes ("") around the name to rename the file to the correct file extension.

Anyone knows what password the system required ?
I have input the old phone password and apple ID password , but did not work.

The password would be whatever you set it to be.
It sounds like you chose to password protect your backup.  You would need to remember the password in order to use the backup.

Unless you'd signed up to iTunes Match then they won't be in the Cloud, only music purchased from iTunes (if you are in a country where music can be re-downloaded) will be there. Have you not still got it on your computer and/or on a backup which you can use to sync it back to the iPad ?

How to restore from a backup
To restore information from a backup, use one of the following methods after connecting your iOS device to the computer with which you normally sync:
Right-click (or Control-click) the device and choose Restore from Backup
If you have a new phone, you can connect to iTunes and it will prompt to restore from your backup

As @wjosten says. Note, however, that it is important to NOT sync the phone after resetting it. A Sync will overwrite the backup that you want to restore.

  • Can I restore a memeo auto backup created in Vista on a time capsule onto a Macbook pro?

I have a pc running vista sp2 and using Memeo auto backup software but backed it up to a TimeCapsule (we also have an iMac and a Macbook Pro in the house). The pc has now developed an HDD error and I'm thinking of replacing it with a MacBook Pro but I need to recover or restore all the files (.docx; .xls and winmail files plus loads of .jpgs) to the new MacBook Pro. Does anyone know if I can do this? I'd rather not have to buy another windows based pc. I've checked on Memeo's web site and support areas but can't seem to find an answer. Thanks.

I've never personally done this, but I'm qute sure you can.  After all, this would be one method of migrating from the MacBook to the MacBook Air (with the assistance of Migration Assistant).

  • Can I restore the prior File print command functionality for Google maps?

Printing Google Maps, recently the file command on Firefox only prints the map and not the directions also. The map and directions both used to print. I am aware that there is the print link near the map, this prints a much larger map and causes trouble with our ISA server. This link requires full access to the Google.com site. We have restricted access to the maps.google.com for employee productivy reasons. My question is can I restore the prior printing functionality? The printing works fine with I.E.

It's either that or finding other software for your scanning needs. For example, Image Capture comes with OS X, VueScan 9.2.09, ExactScan Pro 2.24.
Alternatively, partition your hard drive and install Snow Leopard on another volume.
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive. Use the Snow Leopard installer DVD to install Snow Leopard on your new volume.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

  • Can you restore only the files that have recently changed with Time Machine?

    Greetings,
Before i ask my question,  i'll give a bit of background as to my issue.
I was editing my $PATH within the ~/.bash_profile file and accidently overwrote my $PATH. So now simple terminal commands such as open or 'ls' no longer work. In order to edit the file, I need to change the defaults to allow me to see hidden files, but I can't do that because the defaults command stopped working after I screwed up the $PATH. Also, I used the echo commadn to verify that the previous $PATH no longer exists. The environment variable now just points to an empty folder I accidently set it to in TextEdit.
So, I have Time Machine running, and it backs up to a Time Capsule. I have the hourly backups that I can restore to, but when I start the restore, it crawled up towards 200,000 files before I finally decided that wasn't right and decided to post a question (it's still "preparing to copy"). I had to select the OS X Volume to restore from my one hour old backup, since I can't restore the folder the bash_profile exists within (it is hidden) or so I assumed.\
Now my question, it seems that Time Machine is doing a full restore of every file in the backup and not just the files it incrementally changed between its hourly backups. Why does it do this? My restore process should have just been a couple of minutes, restoring a couple hundred or so files at most. Restoring several hundred thousand files seems stupid when the I select a backup that is one hour old. Is there anyway to set it up so I can restore incrementally?
    Thanks,
    Johnathon.

A quick note, I performed the restore from within the Time Machine while booted into OS X; the restore did not take place in the special bootup tool available. Why it does not provide an option to simply restore the files changed over the last hour is mind boggling to me

You are making this way too complicated. In Terminal, choose Shell > New Command…. In the text box that opens, enter bash --noprofile . A Terminal window will open that does not use your .bash_profile, so the bad $PATH will not be an issue. Now you can remove, move, or edit .bash_profile.

  • How can I restore Windows 7 to Bootcamp partition - not reformat the entire hard drive?

    Hello Apple (Mac) Community,
I originally posted this question over on answers.microsoft, but no help was forthcoming. Hope someone can help me with a problem that's (almost) making me nuts! I teach graphics to college students. In brief: I run Windows 7 Pro 64 on a Mac Pro tower, along with Snow Leopard (OSX). Windows is loaded on one partition of a 1TB drive. The other partition is a Mac backup. The Mac OS is on a different drive. Everything was going swimmingly with both OS, until recently. Unfortunately, the drive with Windows showed problems and I determined that the HD was either toast or needed a total reformat. My Mac data was all backed-up. Now I wanted to backup Windows so I can easily get back to the relatively happy point of my Windows 7 experience (drivers loaded, dual monitors all working, etc.). I did some online searching and the recommendation was to create a "system image" of the existing Windows 7 install by attaching an external drive, formatting that to NTFS and selecting "backup to image" in Windows. I did that and also took the opportunity to "create a backup disc" on a DVD. (Windows recommended). Next I rebooted back to Mac OS and completely reformatted the problem 1TB disc to a single partition, zero all data, just to see if it would actually reformat. It all worked! So far, so good. Next I used Bootcamp to create two partitions, one for Windows. I then restarted using the Win7 Pro (64) install disc, reformatted the Bootcamp disk to NTFS (as required) and installed Windows 7. After all that is completed and all working, I next try to use the restore from image function while booted in Windows. I'm instructed to restart from the Win install disc, which I do. Here's where things get difficult. When I try to choose restore from image, at that point the installer asks which drives to I want to exclude... but does not show partitions, only full HDs. I do not want to reformat the entire 1TB drive. I only want Windows on the 120gb Bootcamp partition (which is already formatted for Windows BTW). I spent a lot of time online reading through articles with users having the same frustration.
So here (at long last) is my question: How can I either restore Windows just to a Bootcamp partition... using "Windows System Image" or if that can't be done... can I somehow import all of the settings, etc. from the "image" (image is on external HD) into a fresh Win 7 install? So far the "backup disc" also seems useless. I can't even boot to Windows from it. BTW Apple folks: the only response on the MS side was that some "expert" simply posted links on how to install Windows and restore... not helpful with my particular problem of restoring to a partition.
Any help would be appreciated! Hopefully some help that even a Mac user / new Windows user could understand would be better! Thanks!

WinClone 3 is OS X and saves Windows image it makes for restore - that should work but you will have to try and you would need to make a new image unless it also works with a native Windows system restore image. It is now supported and has come a long way.

Paragon Clone OS works and does disk-to-disk clone just like CCC you end up with two bootable drives. But does not work with your setup. It would let you clone and move your Windows install to an SSD or another disk drive though and be bootable.
During its clone process it checks for errors which is very helpful and lets you know - something CCC and others should adopt more of.

I wish for our/my sake you had re-read and rewritten the long 'story' and broken it into a brief list of facts we needed.
    OS X
    Windows
Backup (though external is much safer) and you want bootable OS X clones as well as TimeMachine
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
There are a number of things to do like chkdsk and others as well as Windows DVD to do automatic system repairs and find out why.
AppleHFS - the abilty to mount and read HFS volumes can be notorious.
I would rearrange and redo your storage setup and how you use the 4-5 internal hard drive bays.

  • Can't restore latest Time Machine backup after drive replacement- only the very first.

My 13" Macbook Pro running 10.8.5 had a bad hard drive which had to be replaced. After the new drive was put in I tried to restore everything to the new drive with Time Machine but could only restore the first backup I ever did after getting the computer, which was over a year ago.  I can drag and drop files but I would rather have all my preferences and bookmarks etc.  How do I restore the latest backup which was only about a week ago?  Thank you.

Not yet; I'm not sure if Migration Assistant is quite right. Since I posted the question I ran across this youtube video
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYUem-QfYBs
which suggests that I need to start up from a bootable external disc in order to restore a Time Machine backup to the same computer that the backup came from when the drive is replaced.  The video actually seems to describe my issue exactly.  The only confusing thing is I don't know why I would have been able to restore the very first Time Machine backup if I need to boot from an external disc.  More investigation needed.

  • Can't restore latest time machine backup

I have just had my the hard drive in my macbook pro replaced and am trying to restore from a time machine backup.  I back up regularly (about once a week) to an external hard drive, but the most recent option for backup is October... help!
I can see a backup from yesterday if I navigate the hard drive in finder, but it won't show me this option in the restore from time machine backup prompt.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It looks like you want to have the whole backup restored. In this case, instead of using the Time Machine app and restoring files individually, you need to use Migration Assistant (in /Applications/Utilities).
If you do not have anything you need on your new MacBook Pro's hard drive, there's even a cleaner way of restoring the backup. Hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting up to start up into OS X Recover, select the option to restore a Time Machine backup and follow its steps. The backup you select will be restored and your Mac will be the same as before replacing the hard drive

  • Can't restore from Time Machine backup error message

My hard drive on my Macbook failed a few days ago. Just makes a clanking noise and won't boot up etc... I installed a new drive, formatted it, and selected restore from Time Machine backup from the installer screen. It started restoring from my backup I had on an external drive and everything was fine untill it got about 6% done then get a message that says "An error occured when restoring from the backup" It is pretty non descriptive. It also says please restart your system and try again or something to that effect. I tried again, same problem.  When I try to copy files over manually I eventually gets some error that says there is a problem with a file and it will quit. Any ideas on how to get my data? I can see all my files on there, but can't get them. My backup disc is just used for backup on this one machine nothing else, so it shouldn't have a problem. Help!

Good to hear MA is doing something!
