Can't Retrieve or Send Mail

Well, this one's got me scratching my head and very frustrated.
All of a sudden, I cannot send or retrieve mail. When mail attempts to connect to the server, it just spins the clock and eventually times out. This is happening on all 3 accounts I have set up, 2 different POPs and a .mac. I have perused the discussions here and tried many of the suggestions to no avail. The last thing I tried was deleting the mail library folder and the plist file, forcing mail to start as if new. Even after doing that and setting up an account it cannot connect to the server. I ran the connection doctor and it found nothing wrong.
I have tried several other things as well, including running disc repair (no issues), reparing permissions, and even updating from 10.6 to 10.7 via the combo download.
My machine is on a small network, and all of the other machines are not experiencing any problems with mail, so I don't think it is a connection issue. In addition, I am able to retrieve my mail on the web with no problem.
One other odd thing I have noticed is that I am unable to connect to some web sites. In fact I am typing this on another workstation because I could not log in on Apple's site to post. Don't know if the problems are related or not.
Hopefully I'm missing something here. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks - Gary

Dave,
Took your suggestion and went to the network configurations panel this morning. There were three configurations turned on, Built-in Etherenet 1, Built-in Ethernet 2 and Firewire. Built-in 1 was the active connection and was at the top of the list. I turned off the other two, and then repaired permissions and restarted. There was no change. The mail would still not connect, and I could surf the web, but I could not log in to Apple's site to respond here.
So I decided to try switching to the Built-in Ethernet 2. I changed the ntework configuration, repaired permissions, shutdown the computer, moved the network cable to the ethernet 2 port and restarted. Success! Everything is working again. The mail connects normally and I'm logged into Apple as I type.
The weird part is that this machine has been operating for 5 or 6 months with no issues plugged into ethernet port 1. I didn't even realize that it had 2 ethernet ports on it till this morning. I'm surmising that maybe the ethernet 1 card is failing. I don't know what else to think since it is obviously not software related.
I'm sure glad that this machine does have 2 ports, and that switching solved the problem. If there was only one port, I could imagine chasing this issue to the point of reformatting and reinstalling thinking it was software related only to still find that it did not work....
The only issue I still have is after moving the mail folders around my existing messages say they have not been downloaded yet. I know I read some threads about that on here somewhere, so I'm sure I can fix it.
Anyway, thanks Dave for pointing me in a direction that allowed me to stumble on a fix!

Spent at least 40 min talking to apple support, to sort it out. luckly not at my cost. After trying lots of things and speaking to a higher grade support person I was given a temp password which did the trick. I then was able to reset that with my own password.
The impression i got was no one knowns  what the problem is and resetting the password at the apple end works. Not sure if you would be able to self fix.

  • I set up an apple ID with an invalid e-mail address, how can I change it because I can't retrieve the e-mail to complete the account process

I set up an Apple ID with an invalid e-mail address, how can I change the e-mail address without completing the process of creating the ID cause I can't retrieve the e-mail to complete the process.

Try changing the email address using https://appleid.apple.com/
If you can't change it with that site, you'll have to create a new account.

  • Can receive, but cant send mail

Any ideas? I can receive but cant send mail. It says..
The SMTP server “mailhost.zen.co.uk” rejected the password for user
    Have mail version 4.4
    Many thanks

    Hi,
I would double check your settings and port numbers.
Incoming Mail (pop3) server mailhost.zen.co.uk and port for Incoming mail (POP3) is 995
Outgoing Mail (smtp) server mailhost.zen.co.uk and port for Outgoing mail (SMTP) is 587

Also make sure under SMTP that the outgoing server requires as secure connection (SSL) box is checked as well as the incoming POP3 (SSL) box.
Can you say if this is a recent issue or one that has been there since setup?

  • Can't retrieve my yahoo mail using I phone 4.

Need help, I can't receive my yahoo mail from I phone 4. It was working fine up until last night when I updated the phone with the latest update. I have the same problem from I pad 2, so it's not the phone. The strange thing is I have another yahoo mail account stored. That works fine, so does the hotmail account.
I can send no problem just can't recieve. I can see it trying to download but it stops.
    Any help is appreiated
    Vass

Yahoo mail on iDevices has been a problem now for several weeks if not longer.
There may be a specific message in your inbox that is causing a problem for the phone. Try clearing out your inbox from a computer and see if it starts flowing again. If that doesn't work by deleting and re-adding the account to the phone.  If that doesn't do the trick, I'm afraid you're in the same boat with a lot of other Yahoo mail users at the moment. Consider switching e-mail providers to one with a clue.

  • Am traveling; can receive but not send Mail

We just came to Peru, and have an apartment here with a wireless connection in it, provided by a cable company. I use Verizon as my server, sending and receiving mail with the Mail program. I've traveled to several countries and have never had any trouble sending or receiving mail. But I can't send mail here, and wonder if I need to put something different in the outgoing mail settings of Mail. Or do you think this has something to do with my having installed Snow Leopard? Don't know much about this, but would appreciate some help.
    Thanks!

have an apartment here with a wireless connection in it, provided by a cable company.
You may want to set your email to send using that company's outgoing mail server - to get the connection info you need, contact them for the details, ask the neighbor next door or the computer shop across the street and/or check on the internet using Google to see what others may have to say about the same situation in your location.
As an example, if the local service provider name is 'PeruISP', you would search Google for:
Peru ISP outgoing email setting (or) Peru ISP sending email
    ....you get the idea.
The point is that Verizon clearly isn't working there for you, so you need to know the correct outgoing email server name etc. before you can get your email going again.
    Good luck in any case.

  • TS3276 How can i retrieve my yahoo mail on my computer?

I am not receiving my yahoo email........on my mac air but am on my Iphone.....How can I start getting my mail again?

    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library/Preferences/Mail/v2. Enter Time Machine with that folder selected and see if you can find a Sent folder.

My ipad3 retina display running on ios6 suddenly can't receive or send email anymore. I was trying to open pdf attachment in my email and got blank screen. Restart email and reboot my ipad, email still didn't come back. Anybody have the same problem?

It sounds as if you need to speak to your university's IT department to get instructions for properly connecting your Mac to their LAN and getting email service. It is some security protocol that you are not able to properly engage I think.

  • Can't receive or send mail: Password rejected

    Hi there.
Every time I try and open Mail, I get asked to enter my password for account ".mac account" and told the .mac server "mail.mac.com" has rejected the password for user xxx. I'm asked to re-enter the password. This has happened before when the server is having problems but usually rights itself within a few hours (Re-entering the password never makes any difference.) This time however it's been 5 days, and although I can access my mail at mobileme it's a real pain.
Does anyone have any suggestions about what I can do to get my mail back?
    Many thanks

Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

I have kept getting some sort of messages about my apple id or icloud being disabled or something like that.  My mail @me.com doesn't work, I can't send messages, Safari and Chrome won't let me do anything.  First I thought it was just the Chrome.  So I deleted it and then went to the app store to re-load it.  I don't know what to do.  I'm "old and moldly" so I'm not technically "savy".  How can I fix this????

    Satya.

You're mishandling the responses. You terminate if you don't get an "Ok" string, but that's not how success is defined - you should get a 200 code back, typically with an "OK" (not caps) message.
It doesn't help that you're ignoring all of the server output after each command, so you never find out if anything goes wrong.
You're also reinventing a wheel. The JavaMail API exists for this: http://java.sun.com/products/javamail/

  • Just did a Firmware Update and can't receive or send mail

I just did a firmware update as recommended by Apple:
    2008-04-13 18:30:24 -0400: Installed "Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update" (1.0)
    2008-04-13 18:30:32 -0400: Installed "iMac EFI Firmware Update" (1.3)
I had restarted my iMac and noticed that my Mail 3.2 will no longer connect to my mail servers and send or receive mail.
My internet connection is fine when using my browser. I closed and restarted "Mail" and this didn't help and even restarted my computer but that didn't help either.
Anyone else that just did this update have a similar issue? Anyone know of a fix? I don't think I can undo the Firmware update now, so what do I do?
    Thanks

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.
Delete and re-add the email accounts.
