Can't rotate a single layer

Hi, I've selected part of a photo and copied it to a new layer. I want to rotate just the layer but not the background it came from but when I attempt to rotate, both the layer and the background rotate (even though only the layer is selected). Can any kind sould tell me what I'm doing wrong. Thanks

Click image, rotate, layer, then either free rotate layer, or layer 90° left, or layer 90° right.

How can I design a single layer board in Ultiboard?

The students I work with design some very simple boards and we want to make them single layer, mainly because we etch them ourselves. Is it possible to set-up Ultiboard to route on a single layer?

Ultiboard always has at least two layers, but you can turn off routing for individual layers. You will then get DRC errors for any copper on the "off" layers.
Open the design
Click Options > PCB Properties and select the Copper layers tab
In the Allow routing box, change the layer name Copper Bottom, and click Properties
In the Copper Layers Properties dialog, uncheck Routing. It should look like the image below

My video needs to go on a SD DVD single layer-it is 1h 51m long-the only way I can make is fit is encode H. 264-not ideal-I am using the Share option in FCP-native media was shot 980x720...any other way to do this??

To play on DVD Players, it has to be MPEG2.
It's under 2 hours; I'm surprised it won't fit. If not, get Compressor and lower the bit rate to fit.
The native resolution was 980X720…you mean 960?
It will all be resized to 720X480, which is DVD standard.

Can't Burn DL DVD's, but single layer working okay

I am running into longer video projects and need DL burn capability. I can burn single layer fine, but DL fails.
Also tried using Toast Titanium (8.0.5) and it DL burn attempts fail - saying there is not enough room on the discs. ... I have been inserting DL discs.
This smells like an OS problem, but need help!
In addition to software noted below, I upgraded the original DVD burner to a Pioneer DVD -RW DVR-112D, under Disc Burning it shows:

I have a '08 MacBook 2.4 using Toast9 and cannot burn a DL DVD, I have no problem with a SingleLayer DVD. I've tried all the brands and it's the same all the time. Anyone here have a solution. AppleCare and the AppleStore are clueless. I've found many have this problem.

Multiple shapes on a single layer with different line-weights & colour fills

I'm just beginning with photoshop CS6 and I'm struggling with something in a project that should be simple
I need to draw a circle within a circle within a circle within a circle etc etc.
I need to give the circle lines different weights and colours and I need to change the colour of the fills between the lines.
Imagine if you will a diagram of the Earth's cross-section. That's roughly what I'm going for.
I don't want each circle on a different layer though, it would be way too hectic.
I can't figure out how to change the properties of one shape in the layer without changing all the others.
It's super frustrating.
Can anyone explain how to do this?

A shape is a vector path that defines the shape. The fill of that shape fills the entire layer and the vector mask asks like a cutter so you only see what is inside that mask. Since a single layer can have only a single color what you ask can not be done.
What you can do, when you are satisifed with the circles is to merge the layers into a single layer, then that layer will consist of only pixels and can then have multiple colors defining it. But do that as your final step, as once it is done, it is more difficult to edit it.
What is better is to group the shape layers to hide them or convert them into a smart object. It will look like a single layer, but at any time in the future including after closing the file, you double click on the thumbnail of that layer and view the individual layers to edit them.
There will come a time when you wish you could easily change a color to stroke thickness, even a year layer. Thats where the shape layers really shine. As they are non-destructive.

PSE 10 Can't edit read-only layer groups (a.k.a. I just want to make a custom DVD menu in Elements)

A little background: I wanted to make a custom menu so I opened a copy of one of the canned menu.PSD files in PS Elements 10. It opened up with all layers and their sublayers showing. So far, so good. I did a bunch of editting and had my menu just about right, saved it and burned a DVD with it. I saw some corrections that I needed to make so I opened the same .PSD file and it showed all the main layers (with the folder icon) but not the attached layers.
I double-clicked to open these layers and got:
"You are attempting to open a group, which is not supported in Photoshop Elements. The layers in this group will be simplified into a single layer. Simplify the layers? Yes No."
I was just editing these things the day before yesterday. All I've done since then is register my software online. I have seen it stated in this forum that "Elements doesn't support layer group/sets" but it was referring to an earlier version I'm guessing.
Question 1: Is this still true of PSE 10?
Question 2: If so, how was I editing them the other day?

If you haven't uninstalled premiere elements then it should work, but there are a few things that will not work when editing the dvd templates:
(it only works on certain dvd templates and only on a machine with premiere elements installed)
*If you change the document dimensions either larger or smaller. (not the size of the elements in the template but the overall size such as using
Image>Resize>Image Size or Canvas Size)
*If you delete any of the layer groups
*Changing the name of the document

What is the best Compressor settings for burning a 2 hour DVD on single layer disc?

I have a 2 hour (120 minutes) project timeline which I want to encode in compressor to fit on a single layer DVD.
Do I need to change the Bit Rate to make it fit on a single layer?
Or can someone post the settings or link to where I can find the best settings?

Getting Separate Movable Text Elements In a Single Layer?

Is there any way to have more than one text placement inside of a single layer, but be able to maintain and move each of those separately from the others?   From what I have seen, each new Text item gets its own new layer.   If I want to document an image with seven points of reference, it's absolutely crazy that I have to maintain seven layers, each with an integer 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7.   What would be much more maintainable is to create ONE layer and name it "MAP-NUMBERS" and then have seven integers placed into that one layer.   I would then want to be able to move - say - "2" around separately from "4".   Then making all of the numbers appear or disappear becomes as easy as hiding or showing one layer.
Is there a way to do this with any version of Photoshop?

That's what I have done in my example of a group shot of 42 persons, and I was glad to use separate layers for that purpose.
Why would I want the names of seven people in seven different layers?   I mean - honestly - no one has that requirement. It only makes maintenance of the layers very difficult.
The reason is that having layers is not the goal, it's the means of having full control over distinct objects : size, color, location, font, layer style... For instance, I was able to slightly change the size and location of my indexing numbers, which would have been impossible with already simplified bitmaps. The autoselect feature enabled me to automatically select the layer of the object. As a matter of fact, I did not have the concept of layers in mind when selecting and moving indexes. As for maintenance, I always have full control and I feel the result is logical, detailed but not difficult.
Yes, what is powerful is generally complex, and the layers panel is not simple in that case. Note that with a vector software, you'll have to deal with many items in an object list : I can understand that it may be more convenient for you.

One hour 25 minutes won't fit on a single layer

Hey People,
Using Toast 7, I get the error that 1:25 min. won't fit on a single layer Verbatim. ???
It is an export from FCE with lots of editing if that makes a difference.
iDVD is not much use; it spits out blank disks during multiplexing stage but pretends to keep burning,
a common problem I know but I have never been able to fix it.

How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
• Disable Screen and Energy saver
• IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down
• Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
• Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
• Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
• NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
Encoding
• I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used
• I use Verbatim
• I use DVD-R
Burn speed set
• I set down this to x4 (or x1)
iDVD BUG
• One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
Use of Chapters
• I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
• NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
• No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
Material used to build movie
• video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this e.g. .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
• audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
• photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Trash iDVD pref. file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.

May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

Is it possible to compress a disk image to fit on a single layer DVDR

I have created a disk image from one of my iDVD projects and its about 5.7Gb. I was wondering if there is a free program out there to compress the disk image so I can fit it on a single layer DVD-/+R? Thanks in advance for the help!

I don't know much about free software but Roxio Toast has a Fit to DVD option I often use for this same purpose that works rather well.
Also, after searching google, I did find this one link which may help you. I've never used it myself so I'm not completely sure of how well it will work but it may help you.

Gerber file for single layer board

I have made a single layer board PCB in ultiboard. (on copper top)
On making PCB, project explorer shows copper bottom & related botom layers. I thouht I can remove these layers in final gerber generation.
But on final step, we can unselect the copper bottom layer option. So fro my single layer board, ultiboard generated gerbers as if its double side board.
How to make settings in ultiboard for this?

Hi there,
In the Gerber properties window, you can only check the Copper Top layer and leave other settings as default when you export this Single layer board.
Another way is when you design this Single layer board in the beginning, you can set only one layer at first.
Click Options => PCB Properties and then select the Copper layers tab

DL DVD to single layer DVD

Is it possible to copy a DVD DL to two single layer DVDs (to install Leopard onto a non-DL optical drive)?

There are utilities that can compress video DVDs, but it won't matter in this case. Even if you did what you are trying to accomplish, the OS Installer doesn't 'know' that the data is split onto two disks, and therefore won't be able to complete the install.

Trying to make single layer disk image AFTER making dual layer image

Hi all
I wonder if you can help me.
I just made a dual-layer DVD image from a project and it created a 7GB file. Now I'd like to try a single-layer disk image at 4.7GB, something I did with an earlier version of this project, resulting in a watchable disk on a smaller TV.
Having made the 7GB image, Encore won't let me make the 4.7GB version but I don't understand why.

I simply imported my PPro sequences, built my menus and created the disk image for a dual-layer disk. Whatever source format that involves, that was the one I've used. How can I find out?

I know I can just make only one layer visible and then save as e.g. PNG. But my question is - do I have to make all other layers invisibile in order to save only my one single layer as image? Or is there a way to save only a single layer (or a few at once) without hiding the rest of them?

What does export mean in your mind. Remember Photoshop is a document editor not a file editor it only save files from documents, There is a way to toggle off visible layers but the one you Alt click on visibility icon. Perhaps the scriptlistiner can shed some light on that, Photoshop will still have to process all layers and you need to toggle the visibility the second time. It sounded to me that you want to do something like Export Layers to Files that is why I suggested that you look at how Adobe programmers addressed the subject.

What is the setting in Compressor to fit in a DVD5 (single layer)6 hours of video?
No matter the quality in video or audio, just it has to be the same frame rate than the original 29.97 fps.
I've tried different settings but as mpg2 (2mbp) just allow me about 4 hours with AC3 audio, and as MPG1 fits the amount of time I need, but Toast recompress it.

The video material is to review and correct script translations (Korean-spanish audio dubbing) that's why I don't need the most quality i cant get. I need random access to the material that's why I can't use a VHS in LP mode.
And in Fact I use a very handy external DVD recorder and yes it allows more than 6 hours in a DVD+R. But I stopped doing this workflow because You have to be checking the transfer because sometimes the Final Cut drops frames in playback.(I screwed 4 hours of work when it recorded about an hour of a single frame dropped in my lunchtime)
But I wonder if there is a workaround with compressor to do this task, i think not.
Cleaner allowed me to do the mpg2 at the data rate i Needed. And finish the task with Toast
