Can't run NMCAP on Server 2012 R2 - "This app can't run on your PC"

Hi all,
For some reason it would appear Microsoft have blocked NMCAP running on Windows 2012 R2 and 8.1 in the last week or so.
When running NMCAP at the command line I get "This app can't run on your PC"
Does anyone know how to get around this?
Thanks,
Daniel

Hi Paul,
It seems to work on my Windows 8.1 machines as well, but nmcap won't won't run on any of our Server 2012 R2 machines now, it just gets blocked by SmartScreen.  I can run Network Monitor ok.
It means I can't do things like this: nmcap.exe /network * /capture /file C:\nmcap\%computername%.chn:150M /TerminateWhen /KeyPress x
Very odd!

  • Open an program install on Server 2012 as a app with remote desktop

I have a SQL app loaded on Server 2012. The app runs fine when logged into remote desktop on the server.   The app loads to c:\Program Files (x86)\MSC\MCS.exe.  Remote desktop will not recognize that path to open the .exe file. I
have tried the following path c:\"Program Files (x86)"\MSC\MCS.exe and still will not see the path string and load up.  I am using the same path in the folder path as well.  I have done hundreds of theses on previous versions but this one
will not work.  Is there a trick on server 2012?

I tried every form of the path with the %.  No luck.
I found that I cannot put a simple .bat file in the temp directory and use the c:\temp\test.bat path and folder c:\temp and get the batch file to run.

  • Password Complexity problems on fresh install of Server 2012 R2, This has not been answered before....

    Hello all,
I have a problem that I can't find the solution to. I have found others with the same problem but the answers provided to them were not the exact situation I am in currently. Please read all the text and see if you can answer this...
I downloaded a copy of Windows Server 2012 R2. I am installing it on a stand alone PRE OWNED server which is a Dell R900 quad quad core server with 16gb ram and 500gb drive. The drive has been initialized and configured perfectly and windows server has been
    loaded.
Upon the start of it, the screen appears that tells you to change your password for the admin account. Upon putting ANY (and I do mean ANY) password in there regardless of the complexity, the machine comes back with ..." The password you typed does
not meet the password complexity requirements set by the administrator for your network or group. Get the requirements from your administrator, and then type a new password."
I have tried new drives with no luck, I have tried everything that one can try on this (except the right thing of course). My guess is that the machine retained some crazy complex password file and stored it in an EEprom on board. If this was a factory fresh
machine, I would guess that this wouldn't be an issue as there was no file created yet that the machine is running it's scripted denial from. So... Does anyone have the exact method for eradicating this file or changing the domain controller or file that
controls this complexity problem WITHOUT HAVING TO LOG INTO THE MACHINE since as I said, you can't log into it. I even tried to go in through Linux to find the password in the SAM and since it's a new copy of windows, and there is no passwords in there, it
couldn't find the file since the admin acct wasn't set up yet (but that domain controller is working it's butt off and keeping me out I tell ya! lol)
Any help would be appreciated more than you know! ...Scott

    Hello Phillip,
Thanks for the reply! Yes, the drive was put in the machine with no other drives (500gb SAS) and installed/initialized without incident. The DVD was put in the DVD drive and the OS was installed on the machine. As the machine starts up again after
install (reboots) the text comes up that says that you have to change the password on the administrator account due to this being the first install of the OS. I put in a password, and then put it in again, then get the statement about the password being entered
doesn't meet the complexity level set on the domain controller and to contact the admin of the network. I then looked up what that was referring to and used a series of passwords that should have worked as they matched the exact complexity that windows stated
in their tech knowledge base. Such as ... P@ssw0rd and another like Pass\/\/0rd!! as well as quite a few others with various names and symbols. Each time meeting or exceeding the 8 chars with upper and lower case with symbols
present. Each and every time that complexity statement in yellow comes up.
I tried changing and initializing 2 more disks and downloading another copy of windows server 2012 R2 and tried it all again. Still the exact same thing. I have never seen anything like this before. I have installed windows server 2003 and 2008 in the past
many times without errors like this but this one really has me beat as to what is wrong.
I read a tidbit on a way to go to DOS and take some files from the DVD and copy them to certain locations on the drive the OS is installed on. That is supposed to write over the files that provide the complexity issues but where ever I saw it, they didn't
go into detail as to what exactly to do. I know others have had the same problem in the past but every answer I can see either doesn't address the question or provides the wrong answer altogether.
That's why I am posting here in a last ditch effort to save this project since the same exact problem is happening when I tried to install windows server 2008 R2 as well. I thought I may be able to just go with 2008 and get that running without the issue
but when I wipe the drives completely, and reinstall onto the drive the 2008 version, the exact same thing comes up.
If you have a solution, I would love to hear it! Thanks again...Scott

  • Server 2012 R2 - Remote Apps (RDWeb) and Self Signed Certificates!

Hi all! I have been playing around with VM's on Microsoft Azure just to try and have some Windows Services facing externally that I can play around with and test.
I have spun up a Windows Server 2012 R2 Server and installed Remote Desktop Services on it. I am looking to publish some remote apps and ideally I am looking to get it to work externally.
The Server has been given an IP address which is fine, i have gone to my domain and actually setup cloud.mydomain.co.uk and DNS for this is pointing to the IP address of the server. This is all working and functioning!
Basically if I go onto my server and connect to the RDweb section and login, i can see my remote apps, i can download the laucher and open them, all works great! :)
If however, I go to https://cloud.mydomain.co.uk/RDWeb it asks me to login, I can then see my remote apps but when I click on them I get a certificate stating that the computer cannot verify the identity of the RD Gateway.
What am i missing....what do I need to do to get this to work?
If there is some sort of tutorial on how to set this up, fully, from start to finish then that would be great. Otherwise any advice on this would be muchly appreciated!!
    Thanks! :)

#2 sounds like we would need 2 Essentials servers and we will not have that.
We currently have Server 2008 R2 and have 2012 Standard licenses that are not yet used.
We have much more than 75 users total, but 75 is more than the number of users that will probably take advantage of using RD Gateway any time soon.  It will probably take time to catch on.
If RD Gateway usage was to get super popular and more than 75 users were depending on access to it, then we could financially justify paying to buy all the CALs needed to run RD Gateway without Essentials.  Right now, they are skeptical that it will
be worth spending much money on this and don't want to invest a lot  of money up front.
My understanding is that if we have 75 or fewer users using RD Gateway then we need to by no CALs, just apply a Server Standard Edition License to the server, but if we had 76, we would need to turn off Essentials and buy 76 new CALs.
Or would we need to add 50 CALs to the 25 that automatically come with Essentials?
Also does "turning off" Essentials mean we would have to reinstall and redeploy the RDG or is it just a matter of enabling the RD license server and adding purchased CALs?
No, when you buy essentials you get the right to create 25 users that access the server, when you create the 26th user you will need to have 26 CAL and RDS CAL.

  • SQL Server Compact 3.5 Merge Replication With SQL Server 2012 - Causing IIS App Pool to Crash

Hi, I may be the only person in the world doing this but I wanted to give this information to anyone else who may follow this path in the future, and hopefully avoid a headache, or at least a paid support call to Microsoft.
My original scenario was we had a SQL Server 2008 Server using Merge Replication through and IIS (web server) to several Windows Mobile 6 devices.  This has worked fairly well for a few years.
Recently we upgraded our SQL server to version 2012 SP 1.  After moving the database over to the new server, and re-setting the merge replication stuff, we couldn't get merge replication to work on the Windows Mobile 6 handheld devices.  The replication
would appear to start, and then we would get a message saying that the device could not get to the web site.  The message on the handheld device was this:
"The IIS service is not available."
After doing some more research, we found that the start of the replication process was causing the Thread Pool that was running the SQLCESA35.dll to crash.
The SQLCESALOG.txt file had this information:
    Date Time == SQLCESA Version ==> 3.5.8088.0
Date Time Hr=80004005 ERR:Couldn't find existing RSCB 1
After 2 days of trying to figure out the issue on our own, we gave in and called for paid Microsoft support.  They eventually found a known issue where a cumulative update was able to fix the problem.
We installed the update on the IIS server and everything ran smoothly again.
FIX: Merge replication fails when you use SQL Server Compact to perform a merge replication that synchronizes changes with a publisher in SQL Server 2012

  • Event ID: 1280 Server 2012 RDS - web app fail on second session host

    Hello there
    Topography
    SBS 2011 (domain controller)
    Two VM’s:
VM1 – All RDS rolls: RD Gateway , Connection broker, Licensing and RD access installed and acting as a session host with an active collection for RD web apps. A CA trusted certificate is installed.
VM2 – Session host with a second collection for RD web apps
    Problem
I have a single app installed on both session hosts (the apps require their own servers). Both appear on the RDWeb site available for use.  I can run the app hosted on VM1 no problem, but when I try to open the second app hosted on VM2 I get
    two issues:
    An error is returned
“Your computer can’t connect to the remote computer because the Remote Desktop Gateway server address and the certificate subject name do not match. Contact your network administrator for assistance".
When viewing the certificate, it actually shows the CA cert installed on the
SBS server for RWW, not the cert on VM1. This has me puzzled
Secondly on VM 2, I get
Event ID: 1280 Warning Microsoft Windows TerminalServcies-session broker client
Remote Desktop Services failed to join the Connection Broker on server sever-vm1.local.
Error: Current async message was dropped by async dispatcher, because there is a new message which will override the current one.
When I run the app internally it seems to load but then disappears.
Some further config info if it is relevant:
I have port 4043 (443 used) as the only port directed to the gateway
Am I missing something simple? DNS? Port forwarding issue on the router?  Its my first deployment of this nature with RDS 2012
    Regards
    MIS5000

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Firstly please check the RDP version you are using. I suggest you to update to RDP 8.1 for better feature and functionality. Now other thing verify that you have the RD Gateway certificate name matches the external FQDN of the RD Gateway Server. Also please
check that certificate is added under local computer\personal store and must be signed by trusted root authority.
Please check below article for more detail.

In regards to resolve other issue (Event ID 1280), identify and fix any connectivity problems between the RD Session Host server and the RD Connection Broker by doing the following:
    • Check network connectivity to the RD Connection Broker.
    • Start the Remote Desktop Connection Broker service.
    • Add the RD Session Host server to the Session Broker Computers group.
    More information.

  • How can I make one computer server at Home for access of SQL Server 2012/2008

    Hi All,
Sorry for this basic question but I am zero in networking. I will be very grateful if someone guides what should I do to make one of my home PC as server. Scenario is as follows:
I want to give training to few students about SQL SERVER T-SQL.
I have one Laptop using SQL Server 2012 having Windows 7 Pro(Laptop Master-want to make this server). I have other laptop running Windows 7 pro and got SQL SERVER 2008. My students have mix of laptops including Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows
    8. All students have SQL SERVER 2008 installed and working.
Q1: I actually want to make Laptop Master(explained in above paragraph) as server and want other laptops to access that master server in home network. I will install sample exercise database on server and students will be writing queries to access
    data.
Q2: can I secure sample database from students who can copy sample database from server?
Q3: can students run queries remotely sitting their home?
    Thanks in advance.
    Kind Regards
    A K
    Adnan

    Hi itsadnan,
According to your description, if you want to make your Laptop as Server, and your student can log in your SQL Server 2012 instance, you need to ensure that your computer and student’s computers are the same domain, and you enable TCP/IP, name pipes protocol
in SQL Server Configuration Manager, your SQL Server 2012 instance is allowed to connect remotely and your student install SQL Server Manager Studio 2012 as client tool in their computer, and you create the related login name for your students. For more information,
    see:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/walzenbach/archive/2010/04/14/how-to-enable-remote-connections-in-sql-server-2008.aspx
According to your requirement, in actual, since your students install SQL Server 2008 on their computer, you totally can ask your student to install the sample exercise database in their SQL Server. For example, there are many resource about sample database
in Website, which is helpful for student to learn database technology, such as
AdventureWorks databases for SQL Server 2008. From SQL Server Management Studio, they can attach an AdventureWorks database, then write queries to access data.
Since you have SQL Server 2008 in your other laptop, you can create the sample exercise database, and student can install this database via backup and restore, then write queries to access data and send to you for checking if it is right.
Note:  Due to backwards compatibility, The students could not restore SQL Server 2012 database in their SQL Server 2008 instance.

  • Server 2012 r2 live migration fails with hardware error

Hello all, we just upgraded one of our hyper v hosts from server 2012 to server 2012 r2; previously we had live replication setup between it and another box on the network which was also running server 2012. After installing server 2012 r2 when a live migration
is attempted we get the message:
"The virtual machine cannot be moved to the destination computer. The hardware on the destination computer is not compatible with the hardware requirements of this virtual machine. Virtual machine migration failed at migration source."
The servers in question are both dell, currently we have a poweredge r910 running server 2012 and a poweredge r900 running server 2012 r2. The section under processor for "migrate to a physical computer using a different processor" is already checked
and this same vm was successfully being live replicated before the upgrade to server 2012 r2. What would have changed around hardware requirements?
We are migrating from server 2012 on the poweredge r910 to server 2012 r2 on the poweredge r900. Also When I say this was an upgrade, we did a full re install and wiped out the installation of server 2012 and installed server 2012 r2, this was not an upgrade
    installation.

The only cause I’ve seen so far is virtual switches being named differently. I do remember that one of our VMs didn’t move, but we simply bypassed this problem, using one-time backup (VeeamZIP, more specifically).
If it’s one-time operation you can use the same procedure for the VMs in question -> backup and restore them at new server.
    Kind regards, Leonardo.

  • Server 2012 not visable in AD after IP change

Running a single server 2012 in this environment so it hosts everything such as AD, DHCP, DNS etc.
I changed the network IP scope due to VPN issues for users who connect from home networks using the same IP range.  During the IP range change I changed the servers own static IP addresses, reconfigured DHCP scope and reservations and the DNS server.
Everything in the network is working properly expect that this single server does not show up for clients looking in their Network list of computers.
I've missed something in the process but not sure what that something is. Any ideas how to get the server to reappear?
    Thanks

Under the "Everything in the network is working properly" heading, I presume this means dns resolution is functional, users are being authenticated, able to release/renew ip addresses, etc.  I hear you saying it's just the browsing issue.
Network Discovery in my experience is based on broadcast traffic and therefore less reliable than, for example, the DNS table.  So there are a few angles here.
-It's conceivable that through time and a refreshing of the caches both on the networking equipment and at the clients that this will pick back up for you.
-You might consider refreshing or rebooting the router so that it repopulates it's tables and the aforementioned cache can be ruled out.
-I suggest picking a client to test from.  Restart and see if it picks back up. a difference. Map a drive or browse the UNC path of a share from the Run line and see if the server then populates.
These are just some suggestions to get you started. Let me know what shakes out, as there are certainly many more things to try based on what you're seeing.  Hope this helps.

  • Server 2012 and sql server 2008...

I have both running on the same machine, but the ASP pages running on the IIS reaches out through the network returning to the source machine to touch the database.
I cant remember how to set the IIS to reach the database on the same machine.....
    Any ideas guys?

In addition to previous responses you can configure the connection string in your application instead of the user that execute the application (which is what Lydia's solution is doing). In this case you can check this list of connection string and find the
    one that fit your need
    https://www.connectionstrings.com/sql-server-2008/
    https://www.connectionstrings.com/sql-server-2012/
Using this option you can use any existing user that already have the right permissions in order to connect to the database.
    * This is not recommendation to use this option on any other option, but another option that you should think about. This option have several great advantages but same with the option to control throw the user that execute the application.

  • Finalizing SQL Server 2012 SP2 update

    Hi,
I just successfully upgraded SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition from SP1 CU8 to SP2.
Here is the actual portrait I have in my control panel (Installed programs + version):
Version changed after SP2 update (through Windows Update):
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB                          11.2.5058.0
            Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Transact-SQL ScriptDom              11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Transact-SQL Compiler Service    11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client                                11.2.5058.0
            Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Policies
    11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Setup (English)                            11.2.5058.0
Microsoft VSS Writer for SQL Server 2012                              11.2.5058.0
Microsoft System CLR Types for SQL Server 2012                  11.2.5058.0
SQL Server Browser for SQL Server 2012                               11.2.5058.0
Version changed only after installing corresponding Features Pack component:
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 T-SQL Language Service              11.2.5058.0
SQL Server Report Builder 3 for SQL Server 2012                  11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Management Objects                   11.2.5058.0
          Version did not change:
Microsoft SQL Server System CLR Types                                10.51.2500.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Data-Tier App Framework            11.1.2902.0
    My questions:
    1. Am I missing any components update or is my actual SP2 setup OK?
    2. Even if I tried to install DACFramework SP2 Feature pack by running corresponding installer, it told me that I had an higher version...  Does any of you have a different version number for this component?
    3. I actually have SSDT for VS2010 installed.  The corresponding versions I actually have are the following:
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools 2010
    10.3.31009.2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - enu
    10.3.31009.2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools Build Utilities - enu             10.3.31009.2
Should I consider upgrading any component so they work with SQL 2012 SP2 properly?  If so, could someone provide me the corresponding download/webpage links?
    4. Finally, should I upgrade to CU2 which is actually available. Among other problems, I notice that it should fix an index rebuild problem.  Any other major issues it targets?  Is there any easy way I can test if I should install this update or
    not?
    Thanks for helping.

    Hi again,
I knew I was at SP2 level now.  My request is more about the Features Pack components as well as the CU2 which is actually out:
1- Features Pack components that I couldn't update:
Microsoft SQL Server System CLR Types                                10.51.2500.0
    --> presume was for VS2008
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Data-Tier App Framework            11.1.2902.0       --> is this the real last version?
2- SQL Server Data Tools vs Visual Studio 2010 SP1 + SQL Server 2012 SP2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools 2010
    10.3.31009.2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - enu
    10.3.31009.2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools Build Utilities - enu             10.3.31009.2
Do I have the last versions possible (VS2010) or should I update something?
    3- SQL Server 2012 SP2 CU2
What simple test can I do in order to verify if I really need to install this patch or not?
    Thanks for helping!

    Hi Scripting guys,
    I have a simple question:
    - I want to manage my Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 DHCP server via Powershell: Simple via DHCP Powershell Module
    - Now i want to manage it via a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 machine, i upgraded Powershell 2.0 to Powershell 4.0, but when i load the module i cannot find it
-So i copied the DHCP Module files from Windows Server 2012 and load it in my Windows Server 2008 R2, i got a Namespace error.
The question: Is it possible to run Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2 modules on Windows Server 2008 R2 ?
    Thanks

The question: Is it possible to run Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2 modules on Windows Server 2008 R2 ?

    Regards, Samir Farhat Infrastructure Consultant
Until MS has created an RSAT for Win 7 that works with Server 2012 (R2), this is still impossible.  (Win 2008 R2 runs on the same core as Win 7).
However, since your server now has PSv4, you can try
Powershell Remoting and see if it will work with your 2012 R2 Server.

  • Unable to edit Default Domain policy on Server 2012 R2 domain controller

    Hello,
I recently built a Server 2012 R2 domain controller and added it to my domain.  When trying to edit the default domain policy I get the following error:
I can make edits to other GPO objects.  All the other domain controllers are Server 2008 and are able to edit that GPO.  The issue is on the Server 2012 box only.  I've checked the delegated permissions, I'm a domain admin, and have opened
GPMC as administrator.  Does anyone know what I'm missing?  Thank you for your time.
    Tino

    Hi Tino,
    >>Could that be the problem?
I don't think so, for we can still use FRS to replicate Sysvol. However, it is recommended that we use DFSR to replicate Sysvol if our domain
function level is Windows Server 2008 or above.
Besides, we can follow the suggestions from the following thread to check out which replication mechanism we are using.
    DFS-R on 2008 R2 by default?
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/8f2042d3-193d-4414-b9da-cbcedc6a4c32/dfsr-on-2008-r2-by-default?forum=winserverDS
If the Sysvol is replicated by FRS mechanism, as I suggested in the last reply, we can do a non-authoritative restore for the Sysvol on the new Windows
Server 2012. This will restore the Sysvol from a healthy DC.
To perform a nonauthoritative restore, stop the FRS service, configure the BurFlags registry key, and then restart the FRS service. To do so:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type cmd and then press ENTER.

  • Applying recommend settings from "microsoft security compliance manager 3.0.60.0" to a standalone Server using LocalGPO.wsf on Server 2012 R2

    Hello
Can someone please help me with the following question.
I have a standalone Server and need to apply settings from SCM, I can see how to do this following the instructions in the following article
    http://windowsitpro.com/security/q-how-can-i-apply-security-baseline-i-defined-through-microsoft-security-compliance-manager
The problem is  the LocalGPO.wsf that ships with the above version of SCM does not run on Server 2012 R2 (only Server 2012)
    my question is,
is there a later version of LocalGPO.wsf I can use that works on Server 2012 R2 ?
    Thanks

  • Activating/changing Multipoint server 2012 from evaluation to licensed

    Hi
Could you please help in how to activate or change the Windows Multipoint server 2012 from evaluation to licensed one?
Below URL is for Windows server 2012, is this the same steps i need to follow?
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj574204.aspx
    Thanks for your help!!

    Upgrade means
moving from your existing operating system release to a more recent release, while staying on the same hardware. For example, if your server is running Windows Server 2012, you can upgrade it to Windows Server 2012 R2. You can upgrade from an evaluation version
of the operating system to a retail version, from an older retail version to a newer version, or, in some cases, from a volume-licensed edition of the operating system to an ordinary retail edition.
