Can't run on battery power....

I had a lot of problems with my MBP which Apple diagnosed as a logic board issue. I just picked up my computer after having the logic board replaced. I haven't used it long enough to see if the freezing, etc. has been eliminated, but one problem remains.
I was unable to run off battery power for more than 20 minutes. It would eventually just go black and I'd have to shut down. I'd start back up and it'd have 80%+ battery life left. Apple checked this issue and put other working batteries in and the problem still existed, so it wasn't a battery issue.
This problem remains even with the new logic board.
Does anybody know what this could be?

  • HDX 18T-1200CTO can not run on battery power alone, but runs on AC fine

I recently acquired a HP HDX X18T-1200 CTO, with 2.53GHz P8700 processor and 8GB memory. Everything appears to run fine as long as it is on AC power. As soon as I remove the power cable it will go into the power on reset, and will continue loop on power reset cycle.
I tried to remove the two hard drives but that won't change the situation.
I tried to boot up the PC using CDROM and it behaved the same way. Runs fine with AC, but immediately go to reset once the AC adapter power cord is removed.
BIOS Memory diagnostic and hard drive diagnostic test ran fine.
BIOS is upgraded from F.31 to F.34 (no change in behavior).
    Thanks for helping!

Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that you are having trouble with power when running on your battery. I am happy to assist you with this. Since the unit runs well with the AC power connected,  you have to check and be sure the battery is charging correctly, or if there is perhaps a bad or intermittent contact for the battery. Check through these pages and see if anything is applicable. Also make note of any error messages, LED flash patterns, that sort of thing. Let me know what you see.

  • How can i use an external screen on mountain lion when i'm running on battery power?

    Hey all:
I just upgraded from snow leopard to Mountain Lion, and i use external screen, keyboard and mouse all the time....
On Mountain Lion it's perfect when the power adaptor is connected as soon as you close the LID your external screen becomes the primary screeen and it's fully functional desktop (no mirroring or extension screen)
But the problem is when i'm in battery power, in snow leopard i used to close my lid my mac goes to sleep then i wake it up using the mouse and immediately open the LID so it doesn't go to sleep again and now i'm running on battery power with a primary external screen.
Any idea how to use an external screen on mountain lion while i'm on battery power? (i know i can use mirroring but i want just 1 primary screen and the laptop screen would be turned off )
    Thanks for the help.....

You can't with the lid closed, that's one of the rules for clamshell mode.

  • PB 1400cs won't run on battery power

I've got a 1400cs, purchased second-hand, and it seems to have a problem running on batteries. Even with a new battery, it doesn't want to run on battery power. `Runs fine on AC power, though!
What could cause this? What are my options for inexpensive repair on this problem?

    Keith,
I also have a 1400 with the original battery which will not even run the 'book for a second when I unplug the power adapter, but I don't use the 'book anymore. Surprisingly, the battery level gauge in the menu bar is all red and the Control Strip shows a fully charged battery.
In the menu bar, at least with the OS 8.6 I am running, the red vertical bar or cylinder is a capacity gauge; when all red, the battery is full; as power is consumed, the red starts dropping down and the top is filling with blue. Your gauge indicates a fully charged battery.
The only time you see the lightning bolt is when the battery is charging and you will see it in the menu bar and the Control Strip.
You know the power adapter is connected by the presence of the plug in the Control Strip.
The bars in the Control Strip are all gray when the battery is fully charged and all white when empty.
Remove all power and take a look in the battery bay with a flashlight; gently touch each pin with the eraser-end of a pencil and see if any of the pins is loose or possibly set back beyond the others.
According to Apple service guides, if you have performed the resets and have a known-good battery and power adapter, the only fix is a logic board.
Do you have a 45w power adapter and have you tried another power adapter? You can use the PB1400 or 3400 or any G3 or clamshell iBook adapters.

  • Caution: Your computer is currently running on battery power.......

    HP G72-227wm Notebook PC
    WIN 7
    Pentium Dual Core CPU
    64 bit OS.
Had HD failure, could'nt perform recovery. Contacted HP and ordered Recovery Disc.
Disc arrived today, Bought a new HD as well as a Battery.
Put new HD and Battery in the computer as well as Disk 1 of the recovery disc set.
Computer starts, brought up loading windows, recovery manager came up, then........
Caution: Your computer is currently running on battery power. This process requires the computer to be plugged into AC power. Plug your computer into AC power. and then click OK to continue.
Of course the computer is plugged in, I have switched the power outlet 3 times. When the AC power is unplugged there is no light next to the AC port. AC power in port, White light then orange.
HP tech says thats because its CHARGING the battery.
****side note- after being on the charger the light is now constant white. Assuming the new battery is now completly charged.****
I have tried the following sequences with the tech:
Unplug>take battery out>plug the computer in with Disc 1 from the recovery set>restart> Same Caution:
Unplug>take battery out>hold battery power button for 40 seconds>re-insert the battery>plug the computer in with Disc 1 from the recovery set>restart>Same Caution:
After a considerable amount of time on the phone the tech says that my computer is obsolete and no longer serviceable by HP and advised taking it to a local computer shop.
This was not an issue before the HD failure. I hope someone can assist.
    Thanks

    Hi @mbaysfpd ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue of the HP G72-227WM Notebook giving you the error message your computer needs to connected to the AC adapter.
Could it be possible that when you replaced the HDD you accidentally loosened the connector inside the notebook to the Ac adapter?
Is it loose or wiggles? It could need to be soldered again.
You could look at this post it might have something in it that might help.

  • Macbook can't run on battery

A few months back, i dropped my macbook. This has been a problem ever since.
Basically, it has to be run on a power cord, i can live with it - but i'd rather get it fixed. I'm wondering what this drop did damage to on the macbook. There's a tiny dent in the top left corner, but there doesn't seem to be anything visible to the battery area? Could the problem be anything other than the battery?
I can run it off the battery for about 2 minutes, then everything just switches off.

"Could the problem be anything other than the battery?"
It could be anything. Maybe something broke loose. No one here can give you an exact answer unless they personally take your computer apart & examine it.
Take your MBP to your local Apple Store or an AASP as they will have the proper tools to diagnosis the problem.

  • Laptop refuses to run on battery power alone

I have a 17'' 2006 model Macbook Pro that I bought off eBay in August of 2008 that has worked fine up until today; as of a few hours ago, it does not run solely on battery power, and will automatically shut down when the power cord is removed. The battery shows a full charge and had a 3:00 charge when i used it sans power cord a few days ago. The previous owner claims to have replaced the battery shortly before selling me the computer.
Is this a battery issue or something else?
I'm pretty sure the model number of my computer is MA611LL/A.

When was the last time you calibrated your computer? Calibrating your computer's battery for best performance
To check for a bad battery, go to Apple/About This Mac/More Info
In the System Profiler window, select the Power entry & look for Health Information.
If next to Condition it says "Check Battery" then your battery is probably on the fritz.
MacBook and MacBook Pro Battery Update 1.2 MBP must have been purchased between February 2006 and April 2007.
To check which model Macbook Pro you have, go to Apple/About this Mac. Note the info next to "Processor"

  • Time Capsule backup with MacBook running on battery power.

Will time machine back up to time capsule without AC power being connected to the computer? So far I can't find an option that will let me backup just using battery power. One of TC big selling points was so laptop users could backup without wires. That is the reasons I got time capsule was so I could wirelessly backup my MacBook, but it seems I still need to have a wire connected to the computer. So if you need to have the power cord what is the big deal of a wireless backup? I have searched the topics and no one seems to have even hinted at this question.

That's strange, it allows me to back up manually. What's the charge level of your battery when you requested the backup? Could be a safeguard to prevent failed backups if the battery level's too low...
And for your original post, I'm sorry but I have to disagree. While you are still technically wired to the power outlet, you don't have to be wired to your Time Capsule or an external hard drive. You can, for example, be in your living room next to an outlet and be backing up to your drive in your computer room. Much more convenient IMO.

  • DV4 Battery Issue - Battery Charges; But Laptop Won't Run From Battery Power

    Greetings,
I have a DV4, and let me tell you - I am so over this laptop. I have had it for over a year, and in that time, the backlight went out 6 months into owning it, the battery died just after the one year mark, and the webcam has been broken since I sent this computer back to HP to have the backlight issue resolved. I will never buy a new HP ever again.
Now, the battery I have replaced in my laptop charges - but, when I unplug the laptop from the wall, the battery power does NOT switch over. I have had this battery a total of two weeks - it was working fine until last night.  Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Hi, SoCal Cal. Take a good hard look at your battery contacts: both the ones on the battery itself and the "prongs" in the PB case that engage with the slotlike contacts on the battery. Are any of them significantly darkened/tarnished? Is there any debris or fluff on or in them? Clean out any foreign matter, then insert and remove the battery at least a dozen times in succession to see whether doing so will wear away any tarnish that may be impairing the necessary electrical connections. There's not really any easy, better way to clean the contacts, at least not the ones in the slots on the batttery itself. Then test again.
It sounds to me as though not all of the battery contacts are making good contact — though some of them obviously are, at least some of the time. Perhaps "working" the contacts this way will improve matters.
I really don't know what's going on with your machine; these are just shots in the dark.

  • When running on battery power, my MBP shuts down after 30 mins..please help

this has been happening for the last two weeks; whenever i run my MBP on battery, it goes blank/shuts down after about 30 mins...would start back on, but shut down even before the login screen comes! i checked the battery display under the laptop-it showed 3 green lights!! TIA!! i bought my MBP off the apple website last september!

With your symptoms, most likely, yes. If you have a 17" MBP, you are out of spec (based on Apple's specification of 80% health for 300 cycles). If you have a 15" MBP, you're in spec (84% health), but your symptoms indicate a problem (i.e. a defective battery). So, contact AppleCare!
You can't calibrate now. I asked because if a battery goes too long (150-220 cycles) without calibration, the "sudden loss of power" can result.
    Hope this helps...
Graham, that's why I inquired about calibration, but with the OP's cycle count, that's not the issue. Also, FYI the "battery condition" information is part of System Profiler with Leopard; the OP lists Tiger, and did post all the information available under Tiger.

  • Satellite L635 freezes up when running on battery power

    Hi,
I've bought a Toshiba satellite L635 yesterday, and whenever I try to work on it for more than 5 minutes, the entire computer freezes up nad remains stuck.
After I turn it off and on again and run in safe mode, it works just fine.
When the computer is plugged in to the AC power, it works fine too.
I've tried to recover the OS and settings, but it still freezes up after about 5 minutes of work.
I've also tried to kill all the unnecessary processes, but it still freezed up on me.
    I will appreciate your help,
    Eli.

Hi,, The problem is on Power menagement, the system tries to extend battery life by reducing performance, so go to: ControlPanel > Power Options > Change Plan settings from here click -Change Advanced power Settings- then in - Processor Power Management - increase % of - Minimum Processor State in both Battery and Plugged in modes. I increased them to 15% and its helped to forget this problem. Also dont forget to update your BIOS from toshiba support, version of 2.2 availible. Wish this will help you

  • High CPU usage when running on battery power

    Hi all,
Since a a few weeks, my MBP mod A1278 with the i5 CPU, is extremely slow when not plugged in.
The Activity Monitor shows that a kernel_task is consuming 274% CPU and is using 64 threads.
As soon as I hookup the power adapter,  the kernel_task activity falls back to around 3% and everything is all good.
Anyone with a solution? Should I replace the battery?
BTW I completely reinstalled the MBP and I have a clean system.
    Thanks.
    Patries,

Click Apple icon on the Menubar.
From the dropdown click About This Mac.
    Click More Info.
From the popup window select System Report and click Power on the side bar.
It will show the health of the battery.
    Proceed from there.
    Best.

  • Hizzing / bad sound when running from battery power (Ups)?:

Why is my computer (Imac) emitting a hizzing sound when running from the UPS (battery)? I am testing a offline UPS type: POWERWARE Eaton Protection Station UPS 500VA 250W. My Imac is suppose to use max 200 watts of electrity (Imac 24 inch. intel 2.8 Ghz, 4 GB memory). When running from AC there is no sound. When testing (pulling out the cord on the UPS the Imac starts emitting a disturbing hizz / sound)???

I solved it my self. It was OK (no buzz and fuzz) when it was plugged in (when the electicity line was down once and I was running on the UPS battery).....

  • Why won't my MacBook run on battery power when it is charged?

I love my 2009 MacBook but whenever I use it I have to have it plugged into the wall and if it ever comes slightly unplugged the laptop shuts off at that instant.  I have checked the charge on the battery from the battery and my laptop says that it is charged to 96 percent.

Your battery is 2 years old? Can you post the number of charge cycles and the other info in System Profiler (if you're on 10.6, it may be a bit different - I'm on 10.7.2 - but go to the apple, then About this Mac, then More Info. Then post the battery information (health and cycle count).
