Can't run windows CDs on my Macbook?

I' thought part of the whole deal with the new intel processors was that we wouldn't need to purchase or run virtualpc in order to use windows cds.
I'm trying to run my Kaplan GRE prep cd. When I insert the disc, it doesn't automatically run. So I licked on the disc icon on my desktop and there are bunch of folders with various pdf's. When I click on the gresetup.exe or autorun.inf I'm told to select an appopriate application. But of course, none of my options from my application list work.
This may be an incredibly remedial query, but if someone out there could take a moment to help me, I'd be so so grateful!

Ok, I clicked the icon. I didn't lick it...
PS - according to the support faqs, I can use bootcamp but need to purchase windows? Is this the only way?

  • Can I run Windows 8.1 using VirtualBox on my Macbook?

The system requirements for Windows 8.1 says that it needs "Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver".  Can I run Windows 8.1 using VirtualBox on my Macbook? It's a late 2009 model with an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB graphics card & 2 GB of RAM. (Do I need more RAM?)
    Thanks!

While I can't answer to the BootCamp specification, I can state the use of Windows and Mac OS X in the MacBook will invite a need to upgrade the RAM; likely to the max it can use. Matching RAM of quality specs so the system will work. The specs are important, as details are everything.
You'd likely use Boot Camp to make a partition on the internal HDD, but then the overall capacity for Mac OS X could be compromised. When you remove a partition, you'd use BootCamp again, or you'd have to erase content in order to restore to original capacity. Disk Utility generally has a harder time with a BootCamp partition.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • HT1899 Can I install and run Windows XP on my MacBook Pro 13in. OS X 10.7.5?  If so, where can I buy it?

I'm planning to use my macbook pro to record music, but some of the programs I will be using are only compatible with Windows.  I was told that it was possible to install & run windows XP onto my macbook pro by using Bootcamp.  I just don't know how fullproof or problematic this might be, or if it has even been successfully attempted yet.  Please help!
    Thx, K

You can use XP with 10.7.x by installing XP when the Mac is operating from OS X 10.6.8. It can then be up graded to 10.7.x. Below I have reproduced the "Hatter " method instructions that I have used successfully. If your MBP cannot boot from and install 10.6.8 then it is a no go situation.
    Upgrade 10.6.8 to 10.7 or 10.8
Use a maintenance utility like Yasu or Cocktail to prepare existing internal Mac OSX  HDD.
Clone the internal Mac partition to an external HDD with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
Restart from the cloned external HDD and select it as the startup volume via System Preferences / Startup Disk.
Install 10.7 or 10.8 on the cloned external HDD replacing 10.6.8 or 10.7.x.
Install 10.7.x or 10.8.x updates on the external HDD
Restart the updated 10.7.x or 10.8.x  external HDD and test and adjust the preferences if needed.
When satisfied, clone only  the 10.7.x or 10.8.x  external HDD back to the existing internal Mac HDD replacing 10.6.8 or 10.7.x  but don't include the recovery partition.
The Boot Camp partition will not be altered as to drive id which appeared to cause problems for a few people.
The recovery partition will be on the ext HDD and can be used for trouble shooting. A more convenient way to have the recovery/reinstallation environment is to create a Lion install USB thumb drive.

Not without using a VM. XP is no longer supported in Boot Camp or on newer Apple computers.

  • How can i install windows games in my macbook pro

I m a game lover but since i've macbook pro,i haven't played any game on my macbook...so guys please tell me how can i install windows games to my macbook pro.

As eww said, that computer isn't specifically made for gaming. To get advanced graphics in a game, your computer needs what is called a "discrete" graphics processor, or GPU. This means a seperate chip that processes graphics. In Apple laptops, these are only found in the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro. It is not common to find these in laptops in general that are not expensive and high-end. What you have in yours is an "on-board" or "integrated" GPU. This means that graphics processing is done by a small portion of your main processor (the Intel i5 board). This takes away a portion of primary prossessing and dedicates it to graphics. This works perfectly find in most scenarios, but video rendering, gaming, and 3-D graphics tend to suffer. Most high-end, modern games require discrete GPUs to run at full quality these days.
As far as running Windows 7 and Mac OS both, yes you absolutely can. If you install Windows 7 via Bootcamp (this would require you to have a Windows 7 CD), when you turn on your computer it will default to opening up in Mac OS. But if you hold down the Option key (bottom of the keyboard next to the Command button) while the computer is booting up, it will ask you if you want to open Windows or Mac OS.

  • How do I run Windows software on my MacBook Pro with OS X Mavericks

How do I run Windows software on my MacBook Pro with OS X Mavericks? I want to run a TurboTax program to amend an old tax return. Program is not available for OSX.

    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows 7 or Windows 8.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. A more recent comparison of Parallels, VM Fusion, and Virtual Box is found at Virtualization Benchmarks- Parallels 10 vs. Fusion 7 vs. VirtualBox. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard and later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Mid-2009 MBP, 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory, NVIDIA GeForce 9600 512 MB can't run Windows 8?

    I  have a 17"  mid-2009 MacBook Pro with a 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M
GT 512MB.  Recently upgraded to OS X MAvericks 10.9.4.  I wish to run 3DS MAx Design using Boot CAmp.
The Boot Camp Assistant, downloading the Windows installers says my system can only run Windows 7.  [The newly-opened Windows 8.1 disc is right here.]  Can this be right?  Might you please identify the weak point?  Should I upgrade?  Is the memory the reason?  Is the assistant wrong?  What should I do.
Using 3ds max, would it be wise to upgrade the memory in any case.  When the correct Windows softyware is determined and installed,  how large should I set the partition.  Thank you for helping me.

Thanks, Kappy.  Please, I'd read those system requirements before; I still don't understand where my system falls short.  Both 7 and 8 stipulate a 1GHz processor.  Graphics card I don't know the difference.  So it's memory- I have insufficient accesible memory?  If my purpose is to manipulate highly featured images, should I upgrade memory in any case.  Does it make much difference whether it's 7 or 8?  Some places I know my footing.  Here, not.  Step by step.  Thanks!

  • Can i run windows in the background?

    hi there
i have recently purchased a macbook pro 13" and i know that it is possible to split the hard disk to be able to install windows OS, but i was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to leave windows running in the background and switch back to OSX?
the reason i want to try and do this is because i have a USB device for my fish tank that monitors several peramitors and uploads them to an online account so i can see what is going on in my fish tank, however it needs a local piece of software for it to be able to do this and at the minute this is only available for windows hence my question, im hoping i can get around it by spliting my mac in this way but it needs to be able to run in the background as a parralel system.
    any help would be great.

    Hey,
You can buy Virtual Machine apps such as VMware Fusion and Parallels Desktop for Mac and these will let you run Windows as a Virtual Machine (on top of Mac OS X). You can then run Windows programs as well as Mac ones.
If you need any more help, please ask
    Connor

  • With Mac OS 10.6.7 can I run windows XP?

I want to use Boot Camp to slipt my hard Drive so that I can run windows, but the only widows disks I own are XP and Vista but I have heard that with the OS 10.6.7 I can't run windows XP, which is what I really want.
So is it possible to use Boot Camp to run Windows XP with Mac OS 10.6.7?
btw I dont know if it matters but I have a Mac book Pro 13in with Core i7, 4GB memory, and 500GB hard Drive.

MacBook Pro 2011 now only supports and supplies drivers etc for Windows 7, not XP.
Probably due to all the changes needed to support Sandy Bridge processors, SATA3 and ThunderBolt.
if you have 2010 then yes.
And don't rule out using a VM - not good for games but can be for non-intensive apps.
And you probably want Windows 7 64-bit to use 4GB or more (and your MBP takes 8GB RAM, 16GB for 2011).
PS: This is regarding MacBook Pro, totally different from "Mac Pro"

  • Can you put windows on a new macbook pro

can you  put windows on a new macbook pro ? yes or no, which notebook can i put windows on if not the macbook pro?

WIndows 7 is the only Windows OS supported by the new Macs.
You usually use Boot Camp Assistant to partition the drive and install the Windows product on the Mac.
This creates a system where you boot into Mac OSX OR Windows.
    see more at http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
There are programs such as Parallels or VMWare Fusion that can create a Virtual Machine within Mac OSX - giving you access to both Operating Systems at once. You may get slight performance issues as you would be essentially running two Operating Systems at once.

According to the specs for your HP Pavilion a450n Desktop Computer, this model use an Intel Pentium 4 and is almost 10 years old. Please run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant or  Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant to see if your computer is compatible with Windows 8 / 8.1
I tend to think your computer doesn't support some of the needed technologies to run Windows 8 / 8.1

  • On the mac mini 2011 how can I run windows 7 without the optical drive, On the mac mini 2011 how can I run windows 7 without the optical drive

On the mac mini 2011 how can I run windows 7pm bootcamp without an optical drive.  I watch lots of football on sop cast and other such windows based programmes but can't work out how to do it.

Actually Windows can be installed and booted from an external drive if the drive is connected eSATA (external SATA), since the drive is treated as if it's an internal HDD. I used the same method previously to dual-boot from 2 different HDD instead of partitioning.
Most PC motherboards come with them as standard so it's pretty much plug and play but I don't recall seeing a recent Mac with eSATA connectivity though, so that might not be an option for you.
